String theory on AdS3 × S3 × T4 with one unit (k = 1) of NS-NS flux is considered in the hybrid formalism of Berkovits, Vafa & Witten (BVW). Using the free field realisation of the world-sheet theory at k = 1, we identify explicitly the BRST cohomology classes corresponding to some of the low-lying states of the dual CFT. In particular, we do this for the N = 4 superconformal generators of the symmetric orbifold theory, and we confirm these identifications by showing that the worldsheet correlators reproduce the expected dual CFT answer. We revisit $$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ deformations of d = 2 theories with fermions with a view toward the quantization. As a simple illustration, we compute the deformed Dirac bracket for a Majorana doublet and confirm the known eigenvalue flows perturbatively. We mostly consider those $$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ theories that can be reconstructed from string-like theories upon integrating out the worldsheet metric. After a quick overview of how this works when we add NSR-like or GS-like fermions, we obtain a known non-supersymmetric $$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ deformation of a $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (1, 1) theory from the latter, based on the Noether energy-momentum. This world- sheet reconstruction implies that the latter is actually a supersymmetric subsector of a d = 3 GS-like model, implying hidden supercharges, which we do construct explicitly. This brings us to ask about different $$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ deformations, such as manifestly supersymmetric $$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ and also more generally via the symmetric energy-momentum. We show that, for theories with fermions, such choices often lead us to doubling of degrees of freedom, with potential unitarity issues. We show that the extra sector develops a divergent gap in the “small deformation” limit and decouples in the infrared, although it remains uncertain in what sense these can be considered a deformation.

In this paper, we explore the open string amplitude's dual role as a space-time S-matrix and a 1D CFT correlation function. We pursue this correspondence in two directions. First, beginning with a general disk integrand dressed with a Koba-Nielsen factor, we demonstrate that exchange symmetry for the factorization residue of the amplitude forces the integrand to be expandable on SL(2,R) conformal blocks. Furthermore, positivity constraints associated with unitarity imply the SL(2,R) blocks must come in linear combinations for which the Virasoro block emerges at the "kink" in the space of solutions. In other words, Virasoro symmetry arises at the boundary of consistent factorization. Next, we consider the low energy EFT description, where unitarity manifests as the EFThedron in which the couplings must live. The existence of a worldsheet description implies, through the Koba-Nielsen factor, monodromy relations which impose algebraic identities amongst the EFT couplings. We demonstrate at finite derivative order that the intersection of the "monodromy plane" and the EFThedron carves out a tiny island for the couplings, which continues to shrink as the derivative order is increased. At the eighth derivative order, on a three-dimensional monodromy plane, the intersection fixes the width of this island to around 1.5$\%$ (of $\zeta(3)$) and 0.2$\%$ (of $\zeta(5)$) with respect to the super string answer. This leads us to conjecture that the four-point open superstring amplitude can be completely determined by the geometry of the intersection of the monodromy plane and the EFThedron., Comment: 13 figures

Canonical forms of positive geometries play an important role in revealing hidden structures of scattering amplitudes, from amplituhedra to associahedra. In this paper, we introduce "stringy canonical forms", which provide a natural definition and extension of canonical forms for general polytopes, deformed by a parameter $\alpha'$. They are defined by real or complex integrals regulated with polynomials with exponents, and are meromorphic functions of the exponents, sharing various properties of string amplitudes. As $\alpha' \to 0$, they reduce to the usual canonical form of a polytope given by the Minkowski sum of the Newton polytopes of the regulating polynomials, or equivalently the volume of the dual of this polytope, naturally determined by tropical functions. At finite $\alpha'$, they have simple poles corresponding to the facets of the polytope, with the residue on the pole given by the stringy canonical form of the facet. There is the remarkable connection between the $\alpha' \to 0$ limit of tree-level string amplitudes, and scattering equations that appear when studying the $\alpha' \to \infty$ limit. We show that there is a simple conceptual understanding of this phenomenon for any stringy canonical form: the saddle-point equations provide a diffeomorphism from the integration domain to the interior of the polytope, and thus the canonical form can be obtained as a pushforward via summing over saddle points. When the stringy canonical form is applied to the ABHY associahedron in kinematic space, it produces the usual Koba-Nielsen string integral, giving a direct path from particle to string amplitudes without an a priori reference to the string worldsheet. We derive how to incorporate topological features of Riemann surfaces in string amplitudes by insertions of bi-local operators called handle operators. The resulting formalism is exact and globally well-defined in moduli space. After a detailed and pedagogical discussion of Riemann surfaces, complex structure deformations, global vs local aspects, boundary terms, an explicit choice of gluing-compatible and global (modulo U(1)) coordinates (termed `holomorphic normal coordinates'), finite changes in normal ordering, and factorisation of the path integral measure, we construct these handle operators explicitly. Adopting an offshell local coherent vertex operator basis for the latter, and gauge fixing invariance under Weyl transformations using holomorphic normal coordinates (developed by Polchinski), is particularly efficient. All loop amplitudes are gauge-invariant (BRST-exact terms decouple up to boundary terms in moduli space), and reparametrisation invariance is manifest, for arbitrary worldsheet curvature and topology (subject to the Euler number constraint). We study the worldsheet scattering theory of the η deformation of the AdS5 × S5 superstring corresponding to the purely fermionic Dynkin diagram. This theory is a Weyl-invariant integrable deformation of the AdS5 × S5 superstring, with trigonometric quantum-deformed symmetry. We compute the two-body worldsheet S matrix of this string in the light-cone gauge at tree level to quadratic order in fermions. The result factorizes into two elementary blocks, and solves the classical Yang-Baxter equation. We also determine the corresponding exact factorized S matrix, and show that its perturbative expansion matches our tree-level results, once we correctly identify the deformed light-cone symmetry algebra of the string. In this paper, the open string is quantized in a time-dependent black hole background. By time-dependent black hole, one means a Vaydia geometry in the adiabatic approximation, which in [Formula: see text] dimensions is a BTZ black hole with a time-dependent mass. The worldsheet two-point function is derived and it is shown to have the same type of singularity as the flat space one. However, the equal times two-point function depends on the particular Cauchy surface where the worldsheet fields are defined. Finite temperature effects are incorporated through the Liouville–von Neumann approach to nonequilibrium thermodynamics.

The T T ¯ $$ T\overline{T} $$ deformation of a 2 dimensional field theory living on a curved space- time is equivalent to coupling the undeformed field theory to 2 dimensional ‘ghost-free’ massive gravity. We derive the equivalence classically, and using a path integral formulation of the random geometries proposal, which mirrors the holographic bulk cutoff picture. We emphasize the role of the massive gravity Stückelberg fields which describe the diffeomorphism between the two metrics. For a general field theory, the dynamics of the Stückelberg fields is non-trivial, however for a CFT it trivializes and becomes equivalent to an additional pair of target space dimensions with associated curved target space geometry and dynamical worldsheet metric. That is, the T T ¯ $$ T\overline{T} $$ deformation of a CFT on curved spacetime is equivalent to a non-critical string theory in Polyakov form, with a non-zero B-field. We give a direct proof of the equivalence classically without relying on gauge fixing, and determine the explicit form for the classical Hamiltonian of the T T ¯ $$ T\overline{T} $$ deformation of an arbitrary CFT on a curved spacetime. When the QFT action is a sum of a CFT plus an operator of fixed scaling dimension, as for example in the sine-Gordon model, the equivalence to a non-critical theory string holds with a modified target space metric and modified B-field. Finally we give a stochastic path integral formulation for the general T T ¯ + J T ¯ + T J ¯ $$ T\overline{T}+J\overline{T}+T\overline{J} $$ deformation of a general QFT, and show that it reproduces a recent path integral proposal in the literature.

BPS Wilson loops in supersymmetric gauge theories have been the subjects of active research since they are often amenable to exact computation. So far most of the studies have focused on loops that do not intersect. In this paper, we derive exact results for intersecting 1/8 BPS Wilson loops in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, using a combination of supersymmetric localization and the loop equation in 2d gauge theory. The result is given by a novel matrix-model-like representation which couples multiple contour integrals and a Gaussian matrix model. We evaluate the integral at large N, and make contact with the string worldsheet description at strong coupling. As an application of our results, we compute exactly a small-angle limit (and more generally near-BPS limits) of the cross anomalous dimension which governs the UV divergence of intersecting Wilson lines. The same quantity describes the soft anomalous dimension of scattering amplitudes of W-bosons in the Coulomb branch., 45 pages; v2 references added

We continue our study of the worldsheet theory of superstrings on AdS3 × S3 × 𝕋4 in the tensionless limit [1]. We consider the theory on higher genus surfaces. We give evidence that the worldsheet correlators localise on certain worldsheets that cover the boundary of AdS3 holomorphically. This simplifies the string moduli space integral dramatically to a finite sum. This property shows that the higher genus corrections of the string worldsheet reproduce the structure of the 1/N corrections in the dual symmetric orbifold CFT Sym N (𝕋4).

The classical spectral curve for the worldsheet theory of the AdS_5 x S^5 lambda superstring is constructed. The lambda string is interpreted as a regularized, non-abelian T dual of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring with respect to full PSU(2,2|4) symmetry. The form of the curve is identified as the semi-classical limit of a set of Bethe ansatz equations for an XXZ type spin chain for the supergroup PSU(2,2|4) in contrast to the string in AdS_5 x S^5 which is XXX type., 45 pages, numerous improvements, version accepted for publication

We present superstring Lagrangians with manifest T-duality. The Lagrangian version of the section conditions are necessary to make Lagrangians to be general coordinate invariant. We show the general solution of section conditions. The D-dimensional left and right moving currents are the 2D-dimensional chiral current which causes the chiral boson problem. We solve the problem by adding the unphysical 2D-dimensional anti-selfdual current with the selfduality constraints. The Lagrange multipliers of the selfduality constraints play the role of the worldsheet zweibein allowing the Weyl invariant and Lorentz symmetric worldsheet. In this work we study the topological rings of two dimensional (2,2) and (0,2) hybrid models. In particular, we use localization to derive a formula for the correlators in both cases, focusing on the B- and B/2-twists. Although our methods apply to a vast range of hybrid CFTs, we focus on hybrid models suitable for compactifications of the heterotic string. In this case, our formula provides unnormalized Yukawa couplings of the spacetime superpotential. We apply our techniques to hybrid phases of linear models, and we find complete agreement with known results in other phases. We also obtain a prediction for a certain class of correlators involving twisted operators in (2,2) Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds. For (0,2) theories, our argument does not rely on the existence of a (2,2) locus. Previous attempts to determine the worldsheet origin of the pure spinor formalism were not completely successful, but introduced important concepts that seem to be connected to its fundamental structure, e.g., emergent supersymmetry and the role of reparametrization symmetry. In this work, a new proposal towards the underlying gauge theory of the pure spinor superstring is presented, based on an extension of Berkovits' twistor-like constraint. The gauge algebra is analyzed in detail and worldsheet reparametrization is shown to be a redundant symmetry. The master action is built with a careful account of the intrinsic gauge symmetries associated with the pure spinor constraint and a consistent gauge fixing is performed. The $O(d,d)$ invariant worldsheet theory for bosonic string theory with $d$ abelian isometries is employed to compute the beta functions and Weyl anomaly at one-loop. We show that vanishing of the Weyl anomaly coefficients implies the equations of motion of the Maharana-Schwarz action. We give a self-contained introduction into the required techniques, including beta functions, the Weyl anomaly for two-dimensional sigma models and the background field method. We consider various integrable two-parameter deformations of the AdS3 × S3 × T4 superstring with quantum group symmetry. Working on the string worldsheet in light-cone gauge and to quadratic order in fermions, we obtain their common massive tree-level two-body S matrix, which matches the expansion of the conjectured exact q-deformed S matrix. We then analyze the behavior of the exact S matrix under mirror transformation — a double Wick rotation on the worldsheet — and find that it satisfies a mirror duality relation analogous to the distinguished q-deformed AdS5 × S5 S matrix in the one parameter deformation limit. Nonrelativistic string theory is a self-contained corner of string theory, with its string spectrum enjoying a Galilean-invariant dispersion relation. This theory is unitary and ultraviolet complete, and can be studied from first principles. In these notes, we focus on the bosonic closed string sector. In curved spacetime, nonrelativistic string theory is defined by a renormalizable quantum nonlinear sigma model in background fields, following certain symmetry principles that disallow any deformation towards relativistic string theory. We review previous proposals of such symmetry principles and propose a modified version that might be useful for supersymmetrizations. The appropriate target-space geometry determined by these local spacetime symmetries is string Newton-Cartan geometry. This geometry is equipped with a two-dimensional foliation structure that is restricted by torsional constraints. Breaking the symmetries that give rise to such torsional constraints in the target space will in general generate quantum corrections to a marginal deformation in the worldsheet quantum field theory. We revisit the computation of string worldsheet correlators on Euclidean $\text{AdS}_3$ with pure NS-NS background. We compute correlation functions with insertions of spectrally flowed operators. We explicitly solve all the known constraints of the model and for the first time conjecture a closed formula for three-point functions with arbitrary amount of spectral flow. We explain the relation of our results with previous computations in the literature and derive the fusion rules of the model. Recent lattice results strongly support the Axionic String Ansatz (ASA) for quantum numbers of glueballs in 3D Yang-Mills theory. The ASA treats glueballs as closed bosonic strings. The corresponding worldsheet theory is a deformation of the minimal Nambu-Goto theory. In order to understand better the ASA strings and as a first step towards a perturbative calculation of the glueball mass splittings we compare the ASA spectrum to the closed effective string theory. Namely, we model glueballs as excitations around the folded rotating rod solution with a large angular momentum $J$. The resulting spectrum agrees with the ASA in the regime of validity of the effective theory, i.e., in the vicinity of the leading Regge trajectory. In particular, closed effective string theory correctly predicts that only glueballs of even spin $J$ show up at the leading Regge trajectory. This paper describes the motion of a classical Nambu-Goto string in three-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime in terms of two `celestial' fields on the worldsheet. The fields correspond to retarded and advanced boundary times at which null rays emanating from the string reach the boundary. Pure spinor formalism implies that supergravity equations in space-time are equivalent to the requirement that the worldsheet sigma-model satisfies certain properties. Here we point out that one of these properties has a particularly transparent geometrical interpretation. Namely, there exists an odd nilpotent vector field on some singular supermanifold, naturally associated to space-time. All supergravity fields are encoded in this vector field, as coefficients in its normal form. A solvable current-current deformation of the worldsheet theory of strings on AdS3 has been recently conjectured to be dual to an irrelevant deformation of the spacetime orbifold CFT, commonly referred to as single-trace $$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ . These deformations give rise to a family of bulk geometries which realize a non-trivial flow towards the UV. For a particular sign of this deformation, the corresponding three-dimensional geometry approaches AdS3 in the interior, but has a curvature singularity at finite radius, beyond which there are closed timelike curves. It has been suggested that this singularity is due to the presence of “negative branes,” which are exotic objects that generically change the metric signature. We propose an alternative UV-completion for geometries displaying a similar singular behavior by cutting and gluing to a regular background which approaches a linear dilaton vacuum in the UV. In the S-dual picture, a singularity resolution mechanism known as the enhançon induces this transition by the formation of a shell of D5-branes at a fixed radial position near the singularity. The solutions involving negative branes gain a new interpretation in this context.

The worldsheet string theory dual to free 4d N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory was recently proposed in [1]. It is described by a free field sigma model on the twistor space of AdS5 × S5, and is a direct generalisation of the corresponding model for tensionless string theory on AdS3 × S3. As in the case of AdS3, the worldsheet theory contains spectrally flowed representations. We proposed in [1] that in each such sector only a finite set of generalised zero modes (‘wedge modes’) are physical. Here we show that after imposing the appropriate residual gauge conditions, this worldsheet description reproduces precisely the spectrum of the planar gauge theory. Specifically, the states in the sector with w units of spectral flow match with single trace operators built out of w super Yang-Mills fields (‘letters’). Using the ambitwistor string, we compute tree-level celestial amplitudes for biadjoint scalars, Yang-Mills and gravity to all multiplicities. They are presented in compact CHY-like formulas with operator-valued scattering equations and numerators acting on a generalized hypergeometric function. With these we extend the celestial double copy to tree-level amplitudes with arbitrary number of external states. We also show how color-kinematics duality is implemented in celestial amplitudes and its interpretation in terms of a generalized twisted cohomology theory.

Recently an exact worldsheet description of strings propagating in certain black hole microstate geometries was constructed in terms of null-gauged WZW models. In this paper we consider a family of such coset models, in which the currents being gauged are specified by a set of parameters that a priori take arbitrary values. We show that consistency of the spectrum of the worldsheet CFT implies a set of quantisation conditions and parity restrictions on the gauging parameters. We also derive these constraints from an independent geometrical analysis of smoothness, absence of horizons and absence of closed timelike curves. This allows us to prove that the complete set of consistent backgrounds in this class of models is precisely the general family of (NS5-decoupled) non-BPS solutions known as the JMaRT solutions, together with their various (BPS and non-BPS) limits. We clarify several aspects of these backgrounds by expressing their six-dimensional solutions explicitly in terms of five non-negative integers and a single length-scale. Finally we study non-trivial two-charge limits, and exhibit a novel set of non-BPS supergravity solutions describing bound states of NS5 branes carrying momentum charge., 43 pages, v3: typos corrected

We reconsider some older constructions of T-duality, based on automorphisms of the worldsheet operator algebra, in a modern context. It has been long known that at special points in the moduli space of torus compactifications, the target space gauge symmetry may be enhanced. Away from such points the symmetry is broken and T-duality may be understood as a residual discrete gauge symmetry that survives this breaking. Drawing on work on connections over the space of string backgrounds, we discuss how to generalise this framework for T-duality to geometric and non-geometric backgrounds that are not full solutions of string theory, but may play an important role in exact backgrounds. Along the way we find an interesting algebraic structure and discuss its relationship with doubled geometry. We comment on non-isometric T-duality in this context., Comment: 40+8 pages. We put forward a two-dimensional nonlinear sigma model that couples (bosonic) matter fields to topological Horava gravity on a nonrelativistic worldsheet. In the target space, this sigma model describes classical strings propagating in a curved spacetime background, whose geometry is described by two distinct metric fields. We evaluate the renormalization group flows of this sigma model on a flat worldsheet and derive a set of beta-functionals for the bimetric fields. Imposing worldsheet Weyl invariance at the quantum level, we uncover a set of gravitational field equations that dictate the dynamics of the bimetric fields in the target space, where a unique massless spin-two excitation emerges. When the bimetric fields become identical, the sigma model gains an emergent Lorentz symmetry. We explore the notion of isometries in non-Riemannian geometries. Such geometries include and generalise the backgrounds of non-relativistic string theory, and they can be naturally described using the formalism of double field theory. Adopting this approach, we first solve the corresponding Killing equations for constant flat non-Riemannian backgrounds and show that they admit an infinite-dimensional algebra of isometries which includes a particular type of supertranslations. These symmetries correspond to known worldsheet Noether symmetries of the Gomis-Ooguri non-relativistic string, which we now interpret as isometries of its non-Riemannian doubled background. We further consider the extension to supersymmetric double field theory and show that the corresponding Killing spinors can depend arbitrarily on the non-Riemannian directions, leading to "supersupersymmetries" that square to supertranslations., Comment: 31+5 pages, v2: minor changes

Superstring/M-theory compactified on compact Ricci flat manifolds have recently been conjectured to exhibit instabilities whenever the metrics do not have special holonomy. We use worldsheet conformal field theory to investigate instabilities of Type II superstring theories on compact, Ricci flat, spin 3-manifolds including a worldsheet description of their spin structures. The instabilities are signalled by the appearance of stringy tachyons at small radius and a negative (1-loop) vacuum energy density at large radius. We study D-branes in the extended geometry appearing in exceptional field theory (or exceptional generalised geometry). Starting from the exceptional sigma model (an $E_{d(d)}$ covariant worldsheet action with extra target space coordinates), we define open string boundary conditions. We write down Neumann and Dirichlet projectors compatible with the preservation of half-maximal supersymmetry by the brane (building on previous work on the definition of generalised orientifold quotients in exceptional field theory). At small AdS radius, the superstring on $AdS_5\times S^5$ was conjectured by Maldacena to be equivalent to ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills at small `t Hooft coupling where thickened Feynman diagrams can be used to compute scattering amplitudes. It was previously shown that the pure spinor worldsheet action of the $AdS_5\times S^5$ superstring can be expressed as the sum of a BRST-trivial term and a `B-term' which is antisymmetric in worldsheet derivatives. Using the explicit form of the pure spinor vertex operators, it will be argued here that the free super-Yang-Mills Feynman diagrams are described by the BRST-trivial term where the thickened propagators are the regions of the string worldsheet near the AdS boundary and the holes are the regions near the AdS horizon. Evidence will then be presented that the antisymmetric B-term generates the super-Yang-Mills vertex so that, at small radius and arbitrary genus, the superstring amplitudes correctly reproduce the super-Yang-Mills Feynman diagram expansion., Comment: 17 pages with 2 figures. We propose a novel Kaluza-Klein scheme which assumes the internal space to be maximally non-Riemannian, meaning that no Riemannian metric can be defined for any subspace. Its description is only possible through Double Field Theory but not within supergravity. We spell out the corresponding Scherk-Schwarz twistable Kaluza--Klein ansatz, and point out that the internal space prevents rigidly any graviscalar moduli. Plugging the same ansatz into higher-dimensional pure Double Field Theory and also to a known doubled-yet-gauged string action, we recover heterotic supergravity as well as heterotic worldsheet action. In this way, we show that 1) supergravity and Yang-Mills theory can be unified into higher-dimensional pure Double Field Theory, free of moduli, and 2) heterotic string theory may have a higher-dimensional non-Riemannian origin., v1) 5 pages v2) minor change, 6 pages. We study $$ \frac{1}{2} $$ 1 2 -BPS vortex-strings in four dimensional $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 supersymmetric quiver theories with gauge group SU(N) n × U(1). The matter content of the quiver can be represented by what we call a tetris diagram, which simplifies the analysis of the Higgs vacua and the corresponding strings. We classify the vacua of these theories in the presence of a Fayet-Iliopoulos term, and study strings above fully-Higgsed vacua. The strings are studied using classical zero modes analysis, supersymmetric localization and, in some cases, also S-duality. We analyze the conditions for bulk-string decoupling at low energies. When the conditions are satisfied, the low energy theory living on the string’s worldsheet is some 2d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (2, 2) supersymmetric non-linear sigma model. We analyze the conditions for weak→weak 2d-4d map of parameters, and identify the worldsheet theory in all the cases where the map is weak→weak. For some SU(2) quivers, S-duality can be used to map weakly coupled worldsheet theories to strongly coupled ones. In these cases, we are able to identify the worldsheet theories also when the 2d-4d map of parameters is weak→strong.

The classical and quantum worldsheet theory describing nonrelativistic open string theory in an arbitrary nonrelativistic open and closed string background is constructed. We show that the low energy dynamics of open strings ending on n coincident D-branes in flat spacetime is described by a Galilean invariant U(n) Yang-Mills theory. We also study nonrelativistic open string excitations with winding number and demonstrate that their dynamics can be encoded into a local gauge theory in one higher dimension. By demanding conformal invariance of the boundary couplings, the nonlinear equations of motion that govern the consistent open string backgrounds coupled to an arbitrary closed background (described by a string Newton-Cartan geometry, Kalb-Ramond, and dilaton field) are derived and shown to emerge from a Galilean invariant Dirac-Born-Infeld type action., Comment: 41 pages

We show that the Newman-Janis shift property of the exact Kerr solution can be interpreted in terms of a worldsheet effective action. This holds both in gravity, and for the single-copy $\sqrt{\text{Kerr}}$ solution in electrodynamics. At the level of equations of motion, we show that the Newman-Janis shift holds also for the leading interactions of the Kerr black hole. The classical motion of a Nambu-Goto string in AdS$_3$ spacetime is governed by the generalized sinh-Gordon equation. It can locally be reduced to the sinh-Gordon (shG), cosh-Gordon (chG), or Liouville equation, depending on the value of the scalar curvature of the induced metric. In this paper, I examine solutions that contain both shG-type and chG-type regions. The boundary between these regions moves with the speed of light. I show that near such boundaries (generalized) solitons can be classically pair-produced. The solitons move subluminally (superluminally) in the shG (chG) region on the worldsheet, and they correspond to cusps on the string. A direct energy cascade is observed at the moment of pair-creation. For the calculations, I use an exact discretization of the equation of motion. The solutions are segmented strings. In this discrete system, pair-production leads to a complete evaporation of the shG region. The final state is a gas of cusps in a chG environment. In this paper we prove the equivalence among (i) the weakly coupled worldsheet string theory described by the coset sigma model $$ \frac{\mathrm{SL}{\left(2,\mathrm{\mathbb{R}}\right)}_k\times \mathrm{U}(1)}{\mathrm{U}(1)} $$ SL 2 ℝ k × U 1 U 1 × S3 × T4 with SL(2, ℝ) WZW level k ≥ 2, (ii) the full near horizon theory of the NS5 branes with k NS5 branes wrapping T4 × S1, p » 1 F1 strings wrapping S1 and n units of momentum along the S1 and (iii) the single trace $$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ deformation of string theory in AdS3 × S3 × T4. As a check we compute the spectrum (continuous) of the spacetime theory by performing BRST quantization of the coset description of the worldsheet theory and show that it matches exactly with the one derived in the case of single trace $$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ deformed string theory in AdS3. Secondly, we compute the two-point correlation function of local operators of the spacetime theory using the worldsheet coset approach and reproduce the same two-point function from the supergravity approach.

Nonrelativistic open string theory is defined by a worldsheet theory that produces a Galilean invariant string spectrum and is described at low energies by a nonrelativistic Yang-Mills theory. We study T-duality transformations in the path integral for the sigma model that describes nonrelativistic open string theory coupled to an arbitrary closed string background, described by a string Newton-Cartan geometry, Kalb-Ramond, and dilaton field. We prove that T-duality transformations map nonrelativistic open string theory to relativistic and noncommutative open string theory in the discrete light cone quantization (DLCQ), a quantization scheme relevant for Matrix string theory. We describe the worldvolume for the bosonic sector of the lower-dimensional F-theory that embeds 4D, N=1 M-theory and the 3D Type II superstring. The worldvolume (5-brane) theory is that of a single 6D gauge 2-form $X_{MN}(\sigma^P)$ whose field strength is selfdual. Thus unlike string theory, the spacetime indices are tied to the worldsheet ones: In the Hamiltonian formalism, the spacetime coordinates are a $\mathbf{10}$ of the GL(5) of the 5 $\sigma$'s (neglecting $\tau$). The current algebra gives a rederivation of the F-bracket. The background-independent subalgebra of the Virasoro algebra gives the usual section condition, while a new type of section condition follows from Gau\ss{}'s law, tying the worldvolume to spacetime: Solving just the old condition yields M-theory, while solving only the new one gives the manifestly T-dual version of the string, and the combination produces the usual string. We construct the tensionless limit of bosonic string theory in terms of a family of worldsheets with increasing acceleration and show that the null string emerges in the limit of infinite acceleration when the Rindler horizon is hit. We discover a novel phenomenon we call null string complementarity, which gives two distinct observer-dependent pictures of the emergence of open string physics from closed strings in the tensionless limit. The closed string vacuum as observed by the inertial worldsheet turns into a D instanton in the tensionless limit, while in the complementary picture from the accelerated worldsheet, one sees the emergence of a D-25 brane. We finally discuss approaching the Rindler horizon through time evolution at constant acceleration and also show how an open string picture arises very naturally.

We study world-volume effective theories of five-branes in type II string theories. We determine the bosonic zero-modes of the NS5-brane, the Kaluza-Klein monopole, the exotic Q5-, R5-branes and a space-filling brane, by direct calculations within the formalism of double field theory (DFT). We show that these zero-modes are Nambu-Goldstone modes associated with the spontaneously broken gauge symmetries in DFT. They are organized into the bosonic part of the six-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = (1,1)$ vector and the $\mathcal{N} = (2,0)$ tensor multiplets. Among other things, we examine the locally non-geometric R5-branes and space-filling branes that are characterized by the winding space. In this chapter, we generalize the worldsheet path integral to compute scattering amplitudes, which corresponds to insert vertex operators. The gauge fixing from the previous chapter is generalized to this case. In particular, we discuss the 2-point amplitude on the sphere. Finally, we introduce the BRST symmetry and motivate some properties of the BRST quantization, which will be performed in details later. The formulas in this chapter are all covariant: they will be rewritten in complex coordinates in the next chapter.
