A description of the 'AHA' (Audio HTML Access) system of converting HTML into audio signals for blind World Wide Web users is presented. The system exploits the structural content of a document to build a recognizable audio interface. Some of the needed developments for the realization of an effective AHA is the use of auditory icons, earcons for differentiation and iconic sounds.

The WebGALAXY architecture proves the feasibility of spoken language interaction in the World Wide Web. WebGALAXY relies on advances in voice recognition, natural language understanding and other such technologies and can be embedded in any Web browser to support oral interaction. The WebGALAXY prototype currently serves queries regarding weather, air travel and sites in Boston and is being developed for other application.

The Center for Nuclear Research's World-Wide Web (WWW) Library of Common Code has been updated to improve its functionality. The revision of the library involved the development of complicated codes and new features that span fundamental WWW features as well as experimental implementations, such as encryption and authentication applications, gateways and format converters.

Chatterbots, one of 14 classifications of 'bots,' are robots capable of carrying on chat-like conversations online. According to BotSpot founder Marcus Zillman, such robots, already able to converse on many subjects, are improving rapidly. BotSpot's home page, at www.botspot.com, features Eliza, the original chatterbot, which was introduced 34 years ago to talk with people about their feelings. NeuroStudios' new chatterbot, Shallow Red, is also up on BotSpot's home page, so the difference made by 34 years of progress can be gauged.

The challenges related to keeping track of the latest developments and the tremendous rate of growth of the World Wide Web are discussed. Netscape has introduced user-friendly search tools on its Web page. Solutions have been found for some of the security concerns with Java. The need for obtaining hardware and software support for Internet access is detailed. IBM and Microsoft carry on criticising each other through the Web pages. The benefits of modem access are mentioned.

Java and HotJava are new programming languages able to transmit executable content within a Web page or computer program and browsers aware of the languages can automatically pick up and activate applets. Applets are short programs with a single task that are discarded upon completion, such as running animated logos. However, applets could also be used for introducing a virus or reformatting a hard disk, making them a security risk. To avoid this, all Java aware Web browsers automatically check the authenticity of each applet downloaded. The browser is available from the Sun Microsystems Java page.
