Makers of workstations and personal computers (PCs) are going head-to-head in wooing automobile manufacturers. There are two major differences between the two tools. One is that workstations consist of a high-performance microprocessor, a sufficient memory, rapid networking and fast high-resolution, high-quality graphics. Another distinction is that the software used in workstations relies on an advanced, high-performance operating system. Engineering workstations usually employ 64-bit RISC processors while PCs are starting to shift to 32-bit CPUs. However, although high processor speed at low cost is desirable, scalability may be more important. The Hewlett-Packard Vectra XU 6/150, with a list price of $6,500, is a power workstation personal computer from the respected Vectra line. The unit, which has a Pentium Pro 150MHz processor and various high-end components, is a desktop system and more.

The Celebris GL 5166 ST from Digital Equipment Corp, with a list price of $4,169, is a well-constructed and designed desktop workstation with a Pentium 166MHz CPU. The unit tested impressively, especially the video, and it rated a Best Buy.

The Acer Aspire Soho Edition, with a list price of $2,899, is a business-class computer, but one that does not have enough power to run a network. The unit, which is rated as a Best Buy, is well built and features a 166MHz CPU.

Engineers who are planning to buy UNIX-based workstations should determine the features which they will need in their job before purchasing. The options which should be examined are the speed of the central processing unit, the system's software applications, the package of memory chips and the disk capacity. It is also important to select the version which can give the most effective performance when applied to the UNIX workstation. Likewise, the software applications should also be considered.

Three types of VDT workstations, namely, fixed-height, partially adjustable, and fully adjustable, are ergonomically evaluated by IntelAd (an Intelligent Computer Workstation Adjustment System). The objective is to investigate how the degree of adjustability of workstation components affect selected groups of computer users in reference to their seated posture. Six population groups (combinations of two sex groups and three population percentiles) are hypothetically tested in this study.
