Patient's lost to follow-up (LTFU) in this treatment poses a paramount problem to the public and health care services. Information on predictors of loss to follow-up is scarce in this study area and similar settings. Therefore, this study aimed at identifying correlates of loss to follow-up in ART among adult patients in the Oromia region of Ethiopia.Methods: A case–control study was conducted between February 2015 and April 2015 using medical records. The stratified sampling technique was used to select health facilities. The number of patient records to be included in the study was proportionally allocated to each stratum based on their patient proportion in the regional data. Specific health facilities from which to include the records were randomly selected from a list of the health facilities per stratum. All adult patient records registered as LTFU (416) in the selected health facilities during the 12-month period prior to the data collection date, and 832 patients with good adherence to ART were included. Data were double-entered into Epi Info 7 and analyzed using SPSS 20. Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression were used to report the results. BackgroundCorticosteroids are among the most frequently prescribed drugs in the world because they are extremely effective for the relief of symptoms of many inflammatory and immune disorders and other conditions. Corticosteroids have been a mainstay of pharmacotherapy in dermatological practice.ObjectiveThis study aimed to assess prescribing practices of corticosteroids in outpatient dermatology department of Injibara General Hospital, North-West Ethiopia, 2024.MethodA facility-based retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from September 1 to September 10, 2024, with 422 patient prescriptions issued at the dermatology outpatient department of Injibara General Hospital containing at least one corticosteroid medicine. All patient prescriptions dispensed from the dermatology outpatient department from April to August 2024 containing at least one corticosteroid medicine were included. A structured data collection tool was used to collect data, and Statistical Package for Social Science version 27.1 was used for data analysis. The study population was characterized through descriptive analysis.ResultsFemale patients accounted 54.2% of the cases recorded, and the most common age group was between 21 and 30 years (26.5%). Atopic dermatitis (15.4%) was the most common skin disorder, followed by papular urticaria (9.97%) and seborrheic dermatitis (8.9%) for which corticosteroids were prescribed. Topical corticosteroids were the most commonly prescribed medications, accounting for 94.1%. The percentage of corticosteroids prescribed by generic name was 82.4%. We found that the percentage of topical corticosteroid prescriptions in fixed drug combinations and extemporaneous prescription was 4.4 and 1.2%, respectively. Mometasone furoate was the most commonly prescribed (34.6%), followed by clobetasol propionate (26.7%). Ointments (53%) followed by creams (40.6%) were the most common formulations of topical corticosteroids issued. In the present study, moderate potency TCS were most commonly prescribed (32.3%), followed by high potency (28.3%), and super high potency (27.6%), respectively.ConclusionFrom this study, it can be concluded that atopic dermatitis is the most common skin disease observed in the studied dermatology outpatient where the corticosteroid was indicated. Mometasone furoate and clobetasol propionate were the two most commonly prescribed agents. Prescribing practice of high potent and very high potent topical corticosteroids was found to be considerably high.

BackgroundIrrational use of medicines is a problem globally that soon needs to be addressed. According to estimates from the World Health Organization, almost half of all medications were improperly prescribed. This study aimed to assess the drug prescribing patterns based on World Health Organization drug use indicators in the dermatology outpatient department of Injibara General Hospital.MethodA facility-based retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from August 15 to August 30, 2024, with 620 patient prescriptions issued at the dermatology outpatient department of Injibara General Hospital. All patient prescriptions dispensed from the dermatology outpatient department from April to July 2024 were included. A structured data collection tool adopted from the World Health Organization core medicine use indicator was used to collect data, and Statistical Package for Social Science version 27.1 was used for data analysis.ResultsAn average of 1.74 drugs per encounters was prescribed, with 21.6 and 3.1% of prescriptions being antibiotics and injections, respectively. Generics were used in 95.4% of prescriptions, and nearly 84% of drugs were prescribed from the Ethiopian essential-drug list.ConclusionThe World Health Organization’s recommended threshold for the average number of prescriptions prescribed per encounter was met, indicating proper prescribing practices that reduce polypharmacy. The percentage of encounters with antibiotics was within the World Health Organization’s value, which reflects that dermatologists are less likely engaging in irrational antibiotic prescriptions. Likewise, the World Health Organization’s recommendations for the percentage of encounters with injection was met, indicating an effort to minimize unnecessary use of injections by dermatologists, which can reduce complications associated with injection use. However, the World Health Organization’s guidelines for generic drug prescriptions were not met, suggesting that dermatologists are less likely to prescribe generic drugs, which can raise patient healthcare expenditures considerably. Prescriptions from the Ethiopian essential medicine list also fell short of World Health Organization’s standards, indicating a failure to follow established guidelines.

BackgroundDyslipidemia is a common condition in type two diabetic patients, and it is thought to have a significant role in moderating the cardiovascular risk associated with diabetes. Data on serum lipid profiles in type 2 diabetes patients from Bahir Dar, Ethiopia is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of dyslipidemia among adult type 2 diabetes patients and to explore potential contributing factors.Method and materialsA facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted with 354 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients from April 3 to June 4, 2023. Data were collected through the use of structured questionnaires and checklists. The data were entered into EpiData version 4.6 and analyzed using SPSS version 26. Logistic regression was employed to identify variables significantly associated with the outcomes, with a p-value ≤ 0.05 and a 95% confidence interval.ResultsA total of 369 individuals with diabetes were approached in this study, resulting in a response rate of 96%. The overall prevalence of dyslipidemia was 61.3% (95% CI: 56.2–66.7). Of those with dyslipidemia, 11% had a single serum lipid abnormality, while 50.3% had a combined serum lipid abnormality. Significant factors associated with dyslipidemia included being over 60 years old (AOR: 2.4, 95% CI: 1.2–5.0), poor fasting blood glucose control (AOR: 2.5, 95% CI: 1.2–5.1), being overweight (AOR: 5.8, 95% CI: 3.2–11), physical inactivity (AOR: 3.4, 95% CI: 1.7–7.0), and being a past alcohol drinker (AOR: 3.1, 95% CI: 1.3–7.4).ConclusionIn the study area, a high prevalence of dyslipidemia was found among diabetic patients. Independent factors associated with dyslipidemia included older age, poor fasting blood glucose control, physical inactivity, a history of alcohol consumption, and being overweight. To address this issue, it is essential to implement preventive measures such as early detection, patient education, dietary monitoring, regular clinical visits, physical exercise, and weight management. These strategies represent the most effective approach to combating dyslipidemia.

Background: Neonatal seizure is a common medical emergency that signals severe insult to the neonatal brain. It is a major risk factor for neonatal morbidity and mortality. It has a wide worldwide variation, ranging from 5 per 1000 live births in the United States of America to 39.5 per 1000 live births in Kenya. To decrease this significant figure, it is better to investigate its causes further. Therefore, this study aimed to assess its determinants since there was no prior evidence about it in the context of study area. Objective: Aim to assess the determinants of neonatal seizures among neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care units in the Awi Zone Hospitals, 2023. Abstract Background Septicemia is potentially fatal infection caused by pathogenic bacteria infiltrating the bloodstream, resulting in morbidity and mortality among Ethiopian hospital patients. Multidrug resistance is a therapeutic challenge in this patient population. There is an insufficiency data among hospitals in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to assess the phenotypic bacterial isolates, antimicrobial susceptibility pattern, and associated factors among septicemia suspected patients. Methods Prospective cross-sectional study was conducted among 214 septicemia suspected patients from February to June 2021 at Debre Markos Comprehensive Specialized hospital in northwest, Ethiopia. Blood samples were collected aseptically and processed to identify bacterial isolates by using different standard microbiological procedures. Abstract In Ethiopia, the Ribb River is one of the tributaries of the Lake Tana sub-basin. Temperature, precipitation, and streamflow would all be affected by climate change in the Ribb watershed. As a result of the disruption of regular hydrological processes, these climate changes have an impact on water resources. The goal of this study was to look into the effects of climate change on the Ribb watershed’s hydro-climatic characteristics. The forecasted climatic data for rainfall and temperature (minimum and maximum) came from the CORDEX (Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiments) Africa database. Climate change consequences were investigated using RCP 4.5 emission scenarios for the 2021–2060 time range, compared to the 1985–2005 baselines. The observed precipitation and temperature data were used to adjust for bias. The simulation of stream flow was carried out using the semi-distributed and physically based soil and water assessment tool (SWAT). From 1997 to 2003, the model was calibrated, and from 2004 to 2007, it was validated. To determine the trend of the climate variables, trend test analyses were performed on the various time series data. In all of the experiments conducted, the trend test revealed that historical and forecast precipitation recording stations showed statistically negligible trends for all critical values. At a level of 0.05, the historical and prospective maximum and minimum temperature data revealed increasing patterns. In general, the results demonstrated that meteorological conditions cause the flow to decrease over the season. As a result, climate change will have an impact on the Ribb watersheds water resources.

Abstract Background Measuring the caregivers' satisfaction is vital for the effectiveness of childcare. Children admitted to pediatric wards require special hospital situations, a bespoke approach from the medical team, and the participation of caregivers. It is important to give attention to the caregivers while planning for child services. The purpose of this study was to assess the caregiver’s satisfaction with the services provided in pediatric wards of Jimma University Medical Center and identify its associated factors. Methods Facility-based cross-sectional study design was done at Jimma University Medical Center. Participants in the study were primary caregivers who spent two or more days in the pediatric ward with their admitted children. Data were collected from 400 selected caregivers. A consecutive sampling method was employed. Principal component analysis was done for all Likert scale instruments to extract factor (s) representing each of the scales and to have factor scores. Variables with the Likert scale were treated as continuous after principal component analysis was employed. Using these factor scores, a multiple linear regression analysis was carried out to identify factors associated with caregivers' satisfaction with service in pediatric wards. A significance level of less than 0.05 was used in the final model to determine statistical significance. Result This study showed that caregivers' satisfaction with the services in the pediatric ward was 68%. Level of education (β = -0.24, (95% CI; -.411, -.070)), availability of basic facilities (β = 0.163, (95% CI; .063, .263)), patience to listen to patients' problem (β = 0.431, (95% CI; .324, .537, staff communication with client (β = 0.163, (95% CI; -4.839, -1.610)), availability of laboratory tests and its service (β = -0.964, (95% CI; -1.435, -.493)), availability of drug, imaging and service at radiology (β = 2.907, (95% CI; 1.470, 4.344)) and availability of pathology and its service (β = 1.869, (95% CI; .993, 2.746)) were significant factors associated with caregivers satisfaction with health service in pediatrics ward. Conclusion Caregivers were moderately satisfied. Education level, availability of basic facilities communication with client, and the availability of laboratory tests and drugs were factors that significantly associated with caregiver satisfaction. Hospital should avail laboratory tests and drugs in order to maintain high levels of caregiver satisfaction.

Abstract Ethiopia is Africa's second-most populous country, after Nigeria, and is primarily a farming community with low productivity that is heavily reliant on rain-fed agriculture. Water scarcity, global warming, and rising population all necessitate more effective water conservation methods. As a result, the demand for dams is increasing dramatically in order to provide the community with safe drinking water, electricity, and irrigation to ensure food security. The goal of this study was to use remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) techniques in conjunction with the dam suitability stream model and multi-criteria decision analysis to identify potential sites for multi-purpose dam construction. The study used six influencing factors to find suitable dam sites, with the model's suitability stream and overall suitability output maps proposed and evaluated as a result. Based on the topography and land use, the results showed that three proposed dam sites in the upper part of the watershed are likely preferable for irrigation, fishery, and clean drinking water supply. The three proposed dam sites in the watershed's lower reaches, however, are better suited to hydropower generation. In addition, remote sensing and GIS are useful in dam/reservoir site selection because they allow decision-makers to create, manipulate, and manage relevant thematic layers.

BackgroundPuerperal sepsis is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality, particularly in low and middle-income countries where most maternal deaths occur. Women with puerperal sepsis are prone to long-term disabilities, such as chronic pelvic pain, blocked fallopian tubes, and secondary infertility. Besides this, puerperal sepsis has received less attention. For this reason, this study aimed to determine the incidence of puerperal sepsis and its predictors among postpartum women at Debre Markos Comprehensive Specialized Hospital.MethodsA prospective cohort study was conducted among 330 postpartum women from September 2020 to 2021. A pre-tested interviewer-administered questionnaire with a data extraction checklist was used to collect the data. Data were entered into Epi data 4.2 and analyzed using STATA 14.0. The incidence rate of puerperal sepsis was calculated, and a Kaplan-Meier survival curve was used to estimate the survival probability of developing puerperal sepsis. The cox-proportional hazards regression model was fitted to identify predictors of puerperal sepsis.ResultsThe study participants were followed for a total of 1685.3 person-week observations. The incidence rate of puerperal sepsis was 14.24 per 1,000 person-weeks. However, the overall incidence of puerperal sepsis was 7.27%. Not attending formal education [AHR: 3.55, 95% CI: (1.09–11.58)], a cesarean delivery [AHR: 4.50; 95% CI: (1.79–11.30)], premature rupture of the membranes [AHR: 3.25; 95% CI: (1.08–9.79)], complicated pregnancy [AHR: 4.80; 95% CI: (1.85–12.43)], being referred [AHR: 2.90; 95% CI: (1.10–7.65)], and not having birth preparedness and complication readiness plan [AHR: 2.95; 95% CI: (1.08–10.50)] were statistically significant predictors of puerperal sepsis.ConclusionThe incidence of puerperal sepsis was 7.27%. Not attending formal education, cesarean delivery, premature rupture of membranes, complicated pregnancy, referral status, and absence of birth preparedness and complication readiness plan were predictors associated with the incidence of puerperal sepsis.

Objective: Central obesity is an emerging public health problem globally and an independent risk factor for heart, blood vessels, and metabolic disorder. This study aimed to assess the central obesity and associated factors among adults working in government offices in Bedele town, Southwest Ethiopia, 2021. Methods: An institutional survey was conducted among randomly selected government offices. Anthropometric measurements were carried out. Face-to-face interview using standard questionnaires were also used to collect data. A total of 403 respondents were selected from the list of public office workers employed in Bedele Town. Data were entered into Epi data 3.1 then exported to SPSS version 20 for analysis. Each variable with a p value less than 0.25 in the bivariate analysis was entered into logistic regression and p value 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: The response rate was 373 respondents (92.6%). The overall prevalence of central obesity among public office workers of Bedele town was 54.7%. Sitting for more than 5 h at workplace adjusted odds ratio = 2.911 (95% confidence interval = 1.644, 5.156), being a female adjusted odds ratio = 3.258 (95% confidence interval = 1.744, 6.047), age range of 40–49 (adjusted odds ratio = 4.520, 95% confidence interval = 1.798, 11.363), age ⩾ 50 years (adjusted odds ratio = 5.907, 95% confidence interval = 1.808, 19.297), being physically inactive (adjusted odds ratio = 4.594, 95% confidence interval = 2.313, 9.125), consumption of snack (adjusted odds ratio = 4.521, 95% confidence interval = 2.583, 7.913), and alcohol consumption (adjusted odds ratio = 2.324 95% confidence interval = 1.210, 4.463) were factors significantly associated with central obesity among office workers in Bedele town. Conclusion: The magnitude of central obesity was high among office workers in Bedele town and being female gender, older age, physical inactivity, consumption of snacks, and alcohol were associated with it. Physical exercise and a healthy lifestyle should be promoted to minimize the problem.

The HIV/SIV envelope glycoprotein (Env) cytoplasmic domain contains a highly conserved Tyr-based trafficking signal that mediates both clathrin-dependent endocytosis and polarized sorting. Despite extensive analysis, the role of these functions in viral infection and pathogenesis is unclear. An SIV molecular clone (SIVmac239) in which this signal is inactivated by deletion of Gly-720 and Tyr-721 (SIVmac239ΔGY), replicates acutely to high levels in pigtail macaques (PTM) but is rapidly controlled. However, we previously reported that rhesus macaques and PTM can progress to AIDS following SIVmac239ΔGY infection in association with novel amino acid changes in the Env cytoplasmic domain. These included an R722G flanking the ΔGY deletion and a nine nucleotide deletion encoding amino acids 734-736 (ΔQTH) that overlaps the rev and tat open reading frames. We show that molecular clones containing these mutations reconstitute signals for both endocytosis and polarized sorting. In one PTM, a novel genotype was selected that generated a new signal for polarized sorting but not endocytosis. This genotype, together with the ΔGY mutation, was conserved in association with high viral loads for several months when introduced into naïve PTMs. For the first time, our findings reveal strong selection pressure for Env endocytosis and particularly for polarized sorting during pathogenic SIV infection in vivo.

Abstract Background Schistosomiasis continues to inflict significant morbidity and mortality in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The disease endemicity overlaps with the transmission of other parasitic diseases. Despite the ubiquity of polyparasitism in tropical regions, particularly in rural communities, little is known about the impact of multiple helminth infections on disease progression. In this pilot study, we describe the influence of chronic Trichuris trichiura infection on Schistosoma mansoni egg-induced hepatopathology in infected baboons. Methods Baboons with or without underlying whipworm infection were challenged with S. mansoni cercariae to establish schistosomiasis. Adult S. mansoni worms were recovered by perfusion and enumerated, hepatic granulomas were quantified via light microscopy, and transcriptional profiling of tissues were completed using RNA sequencing technologies. Results Co-infection with both S. mansoni and T. trichiura resulted in higher female schistosome worm burden and significantly larger liver granuloma sizes. Systems biology analyses of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) revealed pathways associated with increased liver damage in co-infected baboons. Conclusions Underlying chronic whipworm infection intensified schistosome egg-induced liver pathology in infected baboons. RNA-Seq analysis provided insight into pathways associated with increased liver damage, corroborating histological findings.

BackgroundCoronavirus disease has spread worldwide since late 2019. Vaccination is critical in controlling this pandemic. However, vaccine acceptance among pregnant women is not well-studied. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics in Gondar town, Northwest Ethiopia.MethodsAn institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics at Gondar town, Northwest Ethiopia, 2021. About 510 study subjects were selected using a systematic random sampling technique from August 25 to September 10/2021. Data collection was done by using an interviewer-administered, structured questionnaire. Epi-info 7.2 was used to enter data and then exported to SPSS version 25 software for analysis. Bivariable and multivariable binary logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with the outcome variable. Variables with a p-value < 0.2 in the bivariable analysis were entered into the multivariable analysis to control for possible confounders. Statistical significance is determined using an adjusted odds ratio and 95% confidence interval (CI) at a p-value of < 0.05.ResultsOf 510 participants, 211 (41.4%) were willing to take COVID-19 vaccines. Maternal age ≥ 35 years (AOR: 5.678, 95% CI: 1.775-18.166), having contact history with COVID-19 diagnosed people (AOR: 7.724, 95% CI: 2.183, 27.329), having a pre-existing chronic disease (AOR: 3.131, 95% CI: 1.700-5.766), good knowledge about COVID-19 vaccine (AOR: 2.391, 95% CI: 1.144, 4.998) and good attitude towards COVID-19 vaccine (AOR: 2.128, 95% CI: 1.348) were significantly associated with the outcome variable.ConclusionsThe willingness to take COVID-19 vaccine among pregnant mothers was low. Age, contact history with COVID-19 diagnosed people, chronic disease, knowledge, and attitude towards COVID-19 vaccine were factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine willingness. To enhance the COVID-19 vaccine acceptance, the government with different stakeholders should strengthen public education about the importance of getting COVID-19 vaccine.

This review paper presents a shortcoming associated to data mining algo-rithm(s) classification, clustering, association and regression which are highly used as a tool in different research communities. Data mining researches has successfully handling large amounts of dataset to solve the problems. An increase in data sizes was brought a bottleneck on algorithms to retrieve hidden knowledge from a large volume of datasets. On the other hand, data mining algorithm(s) has been unable to analysis the same rate of growth. Data mining algorithm(s) must be efficient and visual architec-ture in order to effectively extract information from huge amounts of data in many data repositories or in dynamic data streams. Data visualization researchers believe in the importance of giving users an overview and insight into the data distributions. The combination of the graphical interface is permit to navigate through the complexity of statistical and data mining techniques to create powerful models. Therefore, there is an increasing need to understand the bottlenecks associated with the data mining algorithms in modern architectures and research community. This review paper basically to guide and help the researchers specifically to identify the shortcoming of data mining techniques with domain area in solving a certain problems they will explore. It also shows the research areas particularly a multimedia (where data can be sequential, audio signal, video signal, spatio-temporal, temporal, time series etc) in which data mining algorithms not yet used.

Recent advances in systems biology have shifted vaccine development from a largely trial-and-error approach to an approach that promote rational design through the search for immune signatures and predictive correlates of protection. These advances will doubtlessly accelerate the development of a vaccine for schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease that currently affects over 250 million people. For over 15 years and with contributions of over 120 people, we have endeavored to test and optimize Sm-p80-based vaccines in the non-human primate model of schistosomiasis. Using RNA-sequencing on eight different Sm-p80-based vaccine strategies, we sought to elucidate immune signatures correlated with experimental protective efficacy. Furthermore, we aimed to explore the role of antibodies through in vivo passive transfer of IgG obtained from immunized baboons and in vitro killing of schistosomula using Sm-p80-specific antibodies. We report that passive transfer of IgG from Sm-p80-immunized baboons led to significant worm burden reduction, egg reduction in liver, and reduced egg hatching percentages from tissues in mice compared to controls. In addition, we observed that sera from Sm-p80-immunized baboons were able to kill a significant percent of schistosomula and that this effect was complement-dependent. While we did not find a universal signature of immunity, the large datasets generated by this study will serve as a substantial resource for further efforts to develop vaccine or therapeutics for schistosomiasis.

To identify the underlying molecular mechanisms associated with these effects, we simultaneously profiled micro-RNA (miRNA) and mRNA expression in the colon of chronically simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-infected rhesus macaques administered either vehicle (VEH/SIV; n = 9) or Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC; THC/SIV; n = 8). Pro-inflammatory miR-130a, miR-222, and miR-29b, lipopolysaccharide-responsive miR-146b-5p and SIV-induced miR-190b were significantly upregulated in VEH/SIV rhesus macaques. Compared to VEH/SIV rhesus macaques, 10 miRNAs were significantly upregulated in THC/SIV rhesus macaques, among which miR-204 was confirmed to directly target MMP8, an extracellular matrix-degrading collagenase that was significantly downregulated in THC/SIV rhesus macaques. Moreover, THC/SIV rhesus macaques failed to upregulate pro-inflammatory miR-21, miR-141 and miR-222, and alpha/beta-defensins, suggesting attenuated intestinal inflammation. Further, THC/SIV rhesus macaques showed higher expression of tight junction proteins (occludin, claudin-3), anti-inflammatory MUC13, keratin-8 (stress protection), PROM1 (epithelial proliferation), and anti-HIV CCL5. Gomori one-step trichrome staining detected significant collagen deposition (fibrosis) in the paracortex and B cell follicular zones of axillary lymph nodes from all VEH/SIV but not in THC/SIV rhesus macaques, thus demonstrating the ability of Δ9-THC to prevent lymph node fibrosis, a serious irreversible consequence of HIV induced chronic inflammation. Furthermore, using flow cytometry, we showed that Δ9-THC suppressed intestinal T cell proliferation/activation (Ki67/HLA-DR) and PD-1 expression and increased the percentages of anti-inflammatory CD163+ macrophages. Finally, while Δ9-THC did not affect the levels of CD4+ T cells, it significantly reduced absolute CD8+ T cell numbers in peripheral blood at 14 and 150 days post-SIV infection. These translational findings strongly support a role for differential miRNA/gene induction and T cell activation in Δ9-THC-mediated suppression of intestinal inflammation in HIV/SIV and potentially other chronic inflammatory diseases of the intestine.

Schistosomiasis is a major public health problem in Ethiopia. Currently, the prevalence of the disease can possibly be heightened due to man-made ecological transformations particularly related to the recent development programs involving irrigation and construction of dams. The expansion of some of the water resource development projects has been cited enhancing the upsurge of urogenital schistosomiasis mainly in the lower altitude areas of the country. In connection to the extensive initiation of development projects in low altitude areas of the country, simultaneous and adequate attentions have never been given to address a pre-assessment of health impacts of the development programs prior to launching the projects. Helpful appraisals focusing on evaluation of epidemiology of urogenital schistosomiasis in Ethiopia have not been explored. Therefore, the current review attempts to trace an overall picture of the epidemiological status of urogenital schistosomiasis in the country; the past and existing trends of urogenital schistosomiasis surveys and control programs of the country are reviewed. Essential recommendations are highlighted for possible inputs in future control design strategies of national control program of schistosomiasis.

Background: Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is resistant to the two main first-line anti-tuberculosis drugs: rifampicin and isoniazid. It is a major threat to public health worldwide. The objective of this study was to assess the potential risk factors for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis among patients undergoing MDR-TB treatment at two community hospitals in Ethiopia., Methods: A case-control study design was conducted from February 1, 2016, to April 29, 2016. TB-positive patients with MDR-TB and non-MDR-TB were considered as cases and controls, respectively. A total of 219 study participants were included in the study. An interviewer-administered structured questionnaire was used to collect primary data from the patients, and a checklist was used to collect data from the clinical records. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to assess the potential risk factors for the occurrence of MDR-TB., Results: The odds of developing MDR-TB were higher in patients previously treated with anti-TB drugs (odds ratio [OR] = 6.1, 95%CI: 2.92-12.62, P < 0.001), those with a history of contact with known TB patients (OR = 2.1, 95%CI: 1.04-4.43, P < 0.001), those living in a rural setting (OR = 5.6, 95%CI: 2.14-14.46, P = 0.001), those with a history of alcohol consumption (OR = 4.3, 95%CI: 2.29-10.49, P < 0.001) and those without a job (OR = 2.4, 95%CI: 1.06-5.42, P = 0.001)., Conclusions: The study revealed that contact with known TB patients, previous TB treatment, residence area, lack of a job, and alcohol consumption were potential risk factors for the occurrence of MDR-TB. Enhancing public health education, intensifying directly observed therapy programmes for all TB patients and designing control strategies are recommended.
