Group Development (GD) is an important variable when researching and evaluating what makes teams successful. We analyzed the psychometric properties of the originally Spanish GD questionnaire with German participants. 501 team members and 104 team leaders, 18 to 65 years old, from a German research organization answered an online survey composed of the GD questionnaire and items related to other group processes of democracy, mutual trust, team spirit, and interest in the team's tasks. Results confirmed the unidimensional factor structure of the translated Spanish version for the German GD construct. Internal consistency, convergent and discriminant validity were good. The German GD correlated as expected to other constructs, and it showed concurrent validity with respect to the team members' motivation and interest in team tasks (r = .79, p < .01). Efforts to break down decision-making silos in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry have resulted in the evolution of integrated project delivery (IPD). IPD brings together participants to make decisions early in the project cycle. But, anecdotal evidence indicates that IPD is not being implemented as effectively as envisioned. One potential barrier to implementation is the multi-party risk and reward agreement that is a hallmark of IPD. Many owners may be statutorily prohibited from entering into such a risk-sharing contractual arrangement, and countless other organizations 'remain skeptical of its practicality.' However, recent case study research established an important link between reimbursable contracting strategies and greater collaboration and information-sharing among parties. The researchers found that more traditional contracting approaches, when combined with a cost reimbursable compensation structure, achieved positive outcomes by properly allocating risk, fostering teamwork, and bringing together diverse experts to address challenging design problems, thus providing a viable alternative to shared risk and reward approaches. The use of design/build (DB) contracting by transportation agencies has been steadily increasing as a project delivery system for large complex highway projects. However, moving to DB from traditional design-bid-build procurement can be a challenge. One significant barrier is gaining acceptance of a best-value selection process in which technical aspects of a proposal are considered separately and then combined with price to determine the winning proposal. These technical aspects mostly consist of qualitative criteria, thus making room for human errors or biases. Any perceived presence of bias or influence in the selection process can lead to public mistrust and protests by bidders. It is important that a rigorous quantitative mathematical analysis of the evaluation process be conducted to determine whether bias exists and to eliminate it. The paper discusses two potential sources of bias--evaluators and weighting model--in the DB selection process and presents mathematical models to detect and remove biases should they exist. A score normalization model deals with biases from the evaluators; then a graphical weight-space volume model and a Monte Carlo statistical sampling model are developed to remove biases from the weighting model. The models are then tested and demonstrated using results from the DB bridge replacement project for the collapsed Mississippi River bridge of Interstate 35W in Minneapolis. The influence of cultural diversity on work groups through process gains and losses is investigated. Findings suggest that process losses result from cultural diversity because of reduced social integration and task conflict. Implications for managing multicultural work groups are also discussed.

The article demonstrates how organizing physicians into teams can produce the processes, incentives, and culture to improve patient care.

In the evolution of safety research, the literature identifies three paradigms: normative, error-based, and cognitive engineering. Traditionally, strategies to improve construction safety have been based on the normative paradigm--compliance with prescribed safety rules. However, the normative approach ignores how the characteristics of the production system and team processes influence the work behaviors and the possibility of errors and accidents. These factors are the focus of the cognitive engineering perspective. This study develops a cognitive model of construction safety, which conceptualizes safety as an emergent property of the production system. The model proposes that during a task, the task demands and the applied capabilities determine the potential for errors and accidents. It also proposes that the production practices and the teamwork processes of the crew shape the work situations that the workers face--that is, the task demands and the applied capability. Empirical evidence from recent case studies is discussed. The cognitive perspective shifts the focus of accident prevention from conformance with rules to the issues of task demands and applied capabilities, and the factors affecting them--such as work design, workload, resource allocation, and team processes. The purpose of this article is to promote an open systems perspective on team research. The authors develop a model of team boundary activities: boundary spanning, buffering, and reinforcement. The model examines the relationship between these boundary activities and team performance, the moderating effects of organizational contextual factors, and the mediating effect of team psychological safety on the boundary work-performance relationship. These relationships were empirically tested with data collected from 64 software development teams. Boundary spanning, buffering, and boundary reinforcement were found to relate to team performance and psychological safety. Both relationships are moderated by the team's task uncertainty and resource scarcity. The implications of the findings are offered for future research and practice.
