Abstract

In this paper we discuss the design choices and construction strategy of the tapered undulator system designed for a high energy extraction efficiency experiment in the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum planned for installation at the Argonne National Laboratory Linac Extension Area (LEA) beamline. The undulator is comprised of 4 sections pure permanent magnet Halbach array separated by short break sections, each one of them housing a focusing quadrupole doublet and a phase shifter. The quadrupoles use a novel hybrid design which allows one to vary the gradient and match the beam transversely. The undulator tapering profile is optimized to maximize the energy conversion efficiency from a 343 MeV 1 kA beam into coherent 257.5 nm radiation taking into account the longitudinal current profile generated by the linac.

Abstract

Using an 800 nm, 45 fs pulse-front-tilted laser we demonstrate a record 315 keV energy gain in a dual grating dielectric laser accelerator (DLA) and average accelerating gradients of 560 MV/m over 0.5 mm. These results open a new regime in DLA characterized by significant evolution of the beam distribution in the longitudinal phase space, corresponding to >1/4 of a synchrotron oscillation. By tilting the laser wavefront we control the resonant velocity of the DLA and observe a net energy gain, indicating that a tapered optical phase could be used to achieve very high energy gain., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We present a methodology for designing and measuring pulse front tilt in an ultrafast laser for use in dielectric laser acceleration. Previous research into dielectric laser accelerating modules has focused on measuring high accelerating gradients in novel structures, but has done so only for short electron-laser coupling lengths. Abstract

Laser powered dielectric structures achieve high-gradient particle acceleration by taking advantage of modern laser technology capable of producing electric fields in excess of 10GV/m. These fields can drive the bulk dielectric beyond its linear response, and break the phase synchronicity between the accelerating field and the electrons. We show how control of the pulse dispersion can be used to compensate the effect of self-phase modulation and maximize the energy gain in the laser accelerator.In our experiment, a high brightness 8MeV e-beam is used to probe accelerating fields of 1.8GV/m in a 'grating-reset' dielectric structure illuminated by a 45fs laser pulse with a fluence of 0.7J/cm$^2$., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The CLIC Damping rings are designed to produce unprecedentedly low-emittances of 500 nm and 5 nm normalized at 2.86 GeV, with high bunch charge, necessary for the performance of the collider. The large beam brightness triggers a number of beam dynamics and technical challenges. Ring parameters such as energy, circumference, lattice, momentum compaction, bending and superconducting wiggler fields are carefully chosen in order to provide the target emittances under the influence of intrabeam scattering but also reduce the impact of collective effects such as space-charge and coherent synchrotron radiation. Mitigation techniques for two stream instabilities have been identified and tested. The low vertical emittance is achieved by modern orbit and coupling correction techniques. Design considerations and plans for technical systems, such as wigglers, transfer systems, vacuum, RF cavities, instrumentation and feedback are finally reviewed.

Abstract

Non-linear dynamics studies are undertaken in order to optimize the dynamic aperture of the CLIC damping rings. In this respect, advanced methods such as frequency map and resonance driving term analysis are used in order to explore the working point space with respect to single particle stability. The impact of magnet errors and misalignments, and in particular, the effect of the super-conducting damping wigglers is evaluated. Additional considerations for the working point choice are presented with respect to a large vertical space charge tune-shift.

Abstract

This paper summarizes the physics potential of the CLIC high-energy e+e- linear collider. It provides input to the Snowmass 2013 process for the energy-frontier working groups on The Higgs Boson (HE1), Precision Study of Electroweak Interactions (HE2), Fully Understanding the Top Quark (HE3), as well as The Path Beyond the Standard Model -- New Particles, Forces, and Dimensions (HE4). It is accompanied by a paper describing the CLIC accelerator study, submitted to the Frontier Capabilities group of the Snowmass process., Comment: Updated the author list, updated Higgs results and small changes in the text of the Higgs section, updated results on composite Higgs bosons, added and updated references. Abstract

Understanding the factors that determine the occurrence and strength of ecological interactions under specific abiotic and biotic conditions is fundamental since many aspects of ecological community stability and ecosystem functioning depend on patterns of interactions among species. Current approaches to mapping food webs are mostly based on traits, expert knowledge, experiments, and/or statistical inference. However, they do not offer clear mechanisms explaining how trophic interactions are affected by the interplay between organism characteristics and aspects of the physical environment, such as temperature, light intensity or viscosity. Hence, they cannot yet predict accurately how local food webs will respond to anthropogenic pressures, notably to climate change and species invasions. Herein, we propose a framework that synthesises recent developments in food-web theory, integrating body size and metabolism with the physical properties of ecosystems. We advocate for combination of the movement paradigm with a modular definition of the predation sequence, because movement is central to predator-prey interactions, and a generic, modular model is needed to describe all the possible variation in predator-prey interactions. Pending sufficient empirical and theoretical knowledge, our framework will help predict the food-web impacts of well-studied physical factors, such as temperature and oxygen availability, as well as less commonly considered variables such as wind, turbidity or electrical conductivity. An improved predictive capability will facilitate a better understanding of ecosystem responses to a changing world., (© 2024 The Author(s). Abstract

Successfully applying theoretical models to natural communities and predicting ecosystem behavior under changing conditions is the backbone of predictive ecology. However, the experiments required to test these models are dictated by practical constraints, and models are often opportunistically validated against data for which they were never intended. Alternatively, we can inform and improve experimental design by an in-depth pre-experimental analysis of the model, generating experiments better targeted at testing the validity of a theory. Here, we describe this process for a specific experiment. Starting from food web ecological theory, we formulate a model and design an experiment to optimally test the validity of the theory, supplementing traditional design considerations with model analysis. The experiment itself will be run and described in a separate paper. The theory we test is that trophic population dynamics are dictated by species traits, and we study this in a community of terrestrial arthropods. We depart from the Allometric Trophic Network (ATN) model and hypothesize that including habitat use, in addition to body mass, is necessary to better model trophic interactions. We therefore formulate new terms which account for micro-habitat use as well as intra- and interspecific interference in the ATN model. We design an experiment and an effective sampling regime to test this model and the underlying assumptions about the traits dominating trophic interactions. We arrive at a detailed sampling protocol to maximize information content in the empirical data obtained from the experiment and, relying on theoretical analysis of the proposed model, explore potential shortcomings of our design. Consequently, since this is a "pre-experimental" exercise aimed at improving the links between hypothesis formulation, model construction, experimental design and data collection, we hasten to publish our findings before analyzing data from the actual experiment, thus setting the stage for strong inference.

The Primary Casualty Receiving Facility (PCRF) Pathology Department was deployed on Operation GRITROCK from October 2014 to April 2015 to support the medical treatment facility on RFA ARGUS. The department deployed with enhanced microbiology capability and effectively became the microbiology reference laboratory for the Joint Operations Area (JOA). A platelet apheresis capability was delivered in the maritime environment for the first time on an active operation.

Abstract

Because of recent fiscal challenges, home health agencies are forced to seek the most cost-effective methods of providing care. Many agencies are attempting to redefine the scope of practice for home care aides, hoping to determine how to best use these individuals in providing high-quality, cost-effective care. A study was conducted to determine what tasks should be included in the aide's scope of practice. The high response rate to this study seems to indicate a great deal of interest and the need to resolve this issue.
