Resumo O Brasil, assim como outros países do mundo, vem apresentando um crescimento populacional cada vez mais longevo. Na última década, muitas pesquisas se concentraram em compreender a complexidade e os impactos sobre o envelhecimento. Porém, ainda não está claro se existe alguma relação entre os modos específicos de vida dos idosos com o sentido de lugar que eles vivenciam. Questionamos: que lugares e tipos de atividades podem contribuir para uma melhor qualidade de vida do idoso na sua casa, vizinhança, bairro e cidade? Com o objetivo de analisar como o idoso convive com os lugares que habita na urbanidade contemporânea, a fim de proporcionar novas estratégias para um planejamento urbano inclusivo, a pesquisa utilizou o método dos diários fotográficos para compreender essas dinâmicas. O estudo foi aplicado nas cidades brasileiras de Pelotas/RS, Belo Horizonte/MG e Brasília/DF, cada uma com três recortes de bairros escolhidos por distintas faixas de renda (alta, média e baixa). Mesmo com suas grandes diferenças urbanas, econômicas e culturais, essas cidades têm em comum as transformações na pirâmide etária, tornando o estudo mais heterogêneo e diverso. Como resultado, foi possível fazer a aproximação com o conceito de “devir-criança”, agenciando a filosofia contemporânea francesa com o sentido do "bom lugar" encontrado nos idosos da pesquisa. Essas coexistências nos levaram a propor o exercício de composição de um “devir-criança-idoso”, na direção de uma vontade de potência e afirmação da vida arquitetônica e urbana para um idoso "cri-ativo". Durante la última década, muchas investigaciones se han centrado en comprender la complejidad y los impactos del envejecimiento. Sin embargo, todavía no está claro si existe alguna relación entre las formas específicas de vida de las personas mayores y el sentido de lugar que experimentan. Nos preguntamos: ¿qué lugares y tipos de actividades pueden contribuir a una mejor calidad de vida de las personas mayores en su hogar, barrio, barrio y ciudad? Con el fin de analizar cómo las personas mayores conviven con los lugares que habitan en la urbanidad contemporánea, con el fin de brindar nuevas estrategias de planificación urbana inclusiva, la investigación utilizó el método de los diarios fotográficos para comprender estas dinámicas. El estudio se aplicó en las ciudades brasileñas de Pelotas / RS, Belo Horizonte / MG y Brasília / DF, cada una con tres secciones de barrios elegidos por diferentes grupos de ingresos (alto, medio y bajo). Incluso con sus grandes diferencias urbanísticas, económicas y culturales, estas ciudades tienen en común las transformaciones en la pirámide de edades, lo que hace que el estudio sea más heterogéneo y diverso. Como resultado, fue posible abordar el concepto de “convertirse en niño”, uniendo la filosofía francesa contemporánea con el sentido de “buen lugar” que se encuentra en los ancianos en la investigación. Estas coexistencias nos llevaron a proponer el ejercicio de la composición de un “hacerse-niño-anciano”, hacia una voluntad de poder y afirmación de la vida arquitectónica y urbana para un anciano “creativo-activo”. Abstract Brazil, like other countries in the world, has been showing an increasingly long-lasting population growth. Over the last decade, much research has focused on understanding the complexity and impacts of aging. However, it is still not clear whether there is any relationship between the specific ways of life of the elderly and the sense of place they experience. We ask: what places and types of activities can contribute to a better quality of life for the elderly in their home, neighborhood, neighborhood and city? In order to analyze how the elderly live with the places they inhabit in contemporary urbanity, in order to provide new strategies for inclusive urban planning, the research used the method of photographic diaries to understand these dynamics. The study was applied in the Brazilian cities of Pelotas/RS, Belo Horizonte/MG and Brasília/DF, each one with three sections of neighborhoods chosen by different income groups (high, medium and low). Even with their great urban, economic and cultural differences, these cities have in common the transformations in the age pyramid, making the study more heterogeneous and diverse. As a result, it was possible to approach the concept of “becoming-child”, bringing together contemporary French philosophy with the sense of "good place" found in the elderly in the research. These coexistences led us to propose the exercise of composition of a “becoming-child-elderly”, towards a will to power and affirmation of architectural and urban life for a “creative-active” elderly person.

Whilst cities can be sites of creativity, innovation, and change, they can also reproduce the conditions for the exclusion of vulnerable groups. Older people report experiencing specific barriers to accessing the city and are often excluded from the resources for ageing well. The smart city agenda has attempted to bring about technological change whilst also delivering improved quality of life for urban citizens. Smart technologies are a key element of the smart city and are viewed as having the potential to support the independence, autonomy, and well-being of older people. Yet, there has been little research exploring the role of the smart city in supporting the social inclusion of older people, nor any attempt to link this with key policy drivers on ageing e.g., age-friendly cities and communities. In response, the aim of this paper is to explore the experiences of older people living in a smart city in China and discuss how the smart city and age-friendly agenda can be brought together to support positive social outcomes for older people. The paper presents qualitative findings from a multi-methods approach, including semi-structured interviews, walking interviews and focus groups. A total of 64 older people participated in the research across three diverse neighbourhoods in the case study smart city of Chongqing, China. The findings identified opportunities in the development and deployment of smart city, including the potential for improved health and well-being and social connectedness. Yet in delivering on these benefits, a number of challenges were identified which may widen social inequalities, including inequities in access, issues of safety and security, and exclusion from the co-production of smart city policy and practise. The paper discusses the implications of the findings for future smart city policy and practise, specifically in delivering interventions that support older adults' social inclusion and the delivery of age-friendly cities and communities.

This research selected three cities as case studies in Brazil (Pelotas, Belo Horizonte, and Brasilia) and three cities as case studies in the UK (Edinburgh, Manchester and Glasgow). The case study cities represented a broad spectrum of urban areas, in terms of demography (mixed tenures by age), inequality (health and social disparities between high and low income groups), topography (different types of urban densities and form) and urban development (varying levels of physical transformation and change). Within each of the case study cities, three neighbourhoods were selected as study sites reflecting a diversity in population density and income levels (measures guided by previous research examining neighbourhood satisfaction amongst older adults). The neighbourhoods comprised a mix of low, medium and high income and low, medium and high-density areas. Neighbourhood level analysis has been chosen because: (i) the greatest time spent by older adults in retirement is at home and in the immediate neighbourhood locality, (ii) older adults are increasingly dependent upon social relationships in the neighbourhood as they age; and (iii) older adults have important psychological and emotional bonds and association with the neighbourhood (as community). As part of the first work package of the research, a total number of 180 semi-structured interviews (30 per case study city; 10 per neighbourhood) were conducted with older adults to explore the in-depth experiences of ageing-in-place. The interviews identified how sense of place is negotiated and constructed (meaning, identity, belonging), identifying everyday behaviours within the built environment, and the importance of specific social and cultural supports.

The ageing in place agenda emphasises the importance of supporting older adults to age in their communities surrounded by the personal resources to age well. In exploring the relationship between older people and their environment, the concept of place insideness is seen as central to constructing feelings of identity, belonging and attachment in old age. Yet there has been little research exploring how older adults experience place insideness across different urban, social and cultural contexts which is an impediment to identifying effective interventions for age-friendly cities and communities. This article explores how place insideness is experienced amongst older adults across India, Brazil and the UK. The article presents qualitative findings from 294 semi-structured interviews collected across 9 cities and 27 neighbourhoods. The findings reveal that older adults cultivate their sense of place insideness in old age through dimensions of: physical insideness (i.e. environmental competence in navigating and engaging in the community), social insideness (i.e. knowing others) and autobiographical insideness (i.e. shared place histories). In drawing on older people’s understanding of their communities, this paper explores the opportunities and challenges to developing a sense of place insideness to support ageing well. We identify implications for policy and practice in terms of how we can better design urban environments as age-friendly communities which support a greater sense of place for older people.

This paper explores empirical accounts of perceived insecurities and 4 accompanying issues that make urban place problematic and can impact older adults’ 5 wellbeing and overall quality of life. Findings reported derive from the project “Place-6 Making with Older People: Towards Age-Friendly Communities” which investigates both 7 barriers and facilitators to developing age-friendly cities. Drawing on interviews with older 8 adults in three cities in the United Kingdom (UK), the analysis demonstrates that physical 9 and social vulnerabilities along with the characteristics of the built and social environment, 10 play a role in influencing older adults’ behaviours, routines and habits in the community. The 11 results are discussed with a view of influencing practice and policy priorities relating to age-12 friendly cities.
