An extended Drude model, termed as the Gurzhi model, which takes into account the electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions, is applied to calculate the Casimir force between two metallic plates. It is shown that although the dielectric permittivity of the Gurzhi model has a first order pole in the upper half-plane of complex frequencies and, thus, violates the causality principle, it can be used in a restricted frequency interval in combination with the experimental permittivity determined by the optical data for the complex index of refraction. The imaginary part of the Gurzhi dielectric permittivity of Au at low frequencies demonstrates better agreement with the permittivity given by the optical data than the simple Drude model. The Casimir pressure between two Au plates is computed using the Gurzhi, Drude and plasma model approaches, taking into account the optical data, as well as with the simple Drude and plasma models. The contribution of the electron-electron scattering to the Casimir pressure is estimated. Although a comparison with the measurement data of two precise experiments show that the Gurzhi model does not resolve the Casimir puzzle, the obtained results suggest further clarification of this fundamental problem., Comment: 20 pages, 1 Table, 5 figures; accepted for publication in Phys. Interfacing an organic semiconductor C60 with a non-magnetic metallic thin film (Cu or Pt) has created a novel heterostructure that is ferromagnetic at ambient temperature, while its interface with a magnetic metal (Fe or Co) can tune the anisotropic magnetic surface property of the material. Here, we demonstrate that sandwiching C60 in between a magnetic insulator (Y3Fe5O12: YIG) and a non-magnetic, strong spin-orbit metal (Pt) promotes highly efficient spin current transport via the thermally driven spin Seebeck effect (SSE). Experiments and first principles calculations consistently show that the presence of C60 reduces significantly the conductivity mismatch between YIG and Pt and the surface perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of YIG, giving rise to enhanced spin mixing conductance across YIG/C60/Pt interfaces. As a result, a 600% increase in the SSE voltage (VLSSE) has been realized in YIG/C60/Pt relative to YIG/Pt. Temperature-dependent SSE voltage measurements on YIG/C60/Pt with varying C60 layer thicknesses also show an exponential increase in VLSSE at low temperatures below 200 K, resembling the temperature evolution of spin diffusion length of C60. Our study emphasizes the important roles of the magnetic anisotropy and the spin diffusion length of the intermediate layer in the SSE in YIG/C60/Pt structures, providing a new pathway for developing novel spin-caloric materials.

Interactions induced by electromagnetic fluctuations, such as van der Waals and Casimir forces, are of universal nature present at any length scale between any types of systems with finite dimensions. Such interactions are important not only for the fundamental science of materials behavior, but also for the design and improvement of micro- and nano-structured devices. In the past decade, many new materials have become available, which has stimulated the need of understanding their dispersive interactions. The field of van der Waals and Casimir forces has experienced an impetus in terms of developing novel theoretical and computational methods to provide new insights in related phenomena. The understanding of such forces has far reaching consequences as it bridges concepts in materials, atomic and molecular physics, condensed matter physics, high energy physics, chemistry and biology. In this review, we summarize major breakthroughs and emphasize the common origin of van der Waals and Casimir interactions. We examine progress related to novel ab initio modeling approaches and their application in various systems, interactions in materials with Dirac-like spectra, force manipulations through nontrivial boundary conditions, and applications of van der Waals forces in organic and biological matter. The outlook of the review is to give the scientific community a materials perspective of van der Waals and Casimir phenomena and stimulate the development of experimental techniques and applications., Comment: 54 pages, 18 figures, 400+ references. The Casimir force between graphene sheets is investigated with emphasis on the effect from spatial dispersion using a combination of factors, such as a nonzero chemical potential and an induced energy gap. We distinguish between two regimes for the interaction - T=0 $K$ and $T\neq 0$ $K$. It is found that the quantum mechanical interaction (T=0 $K$) retains its distance dependence regardless of the inclusion of dispersion. The spatial dispersion from the finite temperature Casimir force is found to contribute for the most part from $n=0$ Matsubara term. We use the macroscopic quantum electrodynamics approach suitable for absorbing and dispersing media to study the properties and role of collective surface excitations --- excitons and plasmons --- in single-wall and double-wall carbon nanotubes. We show that the interactions of excitonic states with surface electromagnetic modes in individual small-diameter (<~1 nm) single-walled carbon nanotubes can result in strong exciton-surface-plasmon coupling. Optical response of individual nanotubes exhibits Rabi splitting ~0.1 eV, both in the linear excitation regime and in the non-linear excitation regime with the photoinduced biexcitonic states formation, as the exciton energy is tuned to the nearest interband surface plasmon resonance of the nanotube. An electrostatic field applied perpendicular to the nanotube axis can be used to control the exciton-plasmon coupling. For double-wall carbon nanotubes, we show that at tube separations similar to their equilibrium distances interband surface plasmons have a profound effect on the inter-tube Casimir force. Strong overlapping plasmon resonances from both tubes warrant their stronger attraction. Nanotube chiralities possessing such collective excitation features will result in forming the most favorable inner-outer tube combination in double-wall carbon nanotubes. We study theoretically the interactions of excitonic states with surface electromagnetic modes of small-diameter (~1 nm) semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes. We show that these interactions can result in strong exciton-surface-plasmon coupling. The exciton absorption line shape exhibits Rabi splitting ~0.1 eV as the exciton energy is tuned to the nearest interband surface plasmon resonance of the nanotube. We also show that the quantum confined Stark effect may be used as a tool to control the exciton binding energy and the nanotube band gap in carbon nanotubes in order, e.g., to bring the exciton total energy in resonance with the nearest interband plasmon mode. The exciton-plasmon Rabi splitting we predict here for an individual carbon nanotube is close in its magnitude to that previously reported for hybrid plasmonic nanostructures artificially fabricated of organic semiconductors on metallic films. Cd2Os2O7 crystallizes in the pyrochlore structure and undergoes a metal-insulator transition (MIT) near 226 K. We have characterized the MIT in Cd2Os2O7 using X-ray diffraction, resistivity at ambient and high pressure, specific heat, magnetization, thermopower, Hall coefficient, and thermal conductivity. Both single crystals and polycrystalline material were examined. The MIT is accompanied by no change in crystal symmetry and a change in unit cell volume of less than 0.05%. The resistivity shows little temperature dependence above 226 K, but increases by 3 orders of magnitude as the sample is cooled to 4 K. The specific heat anomaly resembles a mean-field transition and shows no hysteresis or latent heat. Cd2Os2O7 orders magnetically at the MIT. The magnetization data is consistent with antiferromagnetic order, with a small parasitic ferromagnetic component. The Hall and Seebeck coefficients are consistent with a semiconducting gap opening at the Fermi energy at the MIT. We have also performed electronic structure calculations on Cd2Os2O7. These calculations indicate that Cd2Os2O7 is metallic, with a sharp peak in the density of states at the Fermi energy. We intepret the data in terms of a Slater transition. In this scenario, the MIT is produced by a doubling of the unit cell due to the establishment of antiferromagnetic order. A Slater transition-unlike a Mott transition-is predicted to be continuous, with a semiconducting energy gap opening much like a BCS gap as the material is cooled below $T_{MIT}$., Comment: 13 pages, 18 eps figures
