The Polstar mission will provide for a space-borne 60cm telescope operating at UV wavelengths with spectropolarimetric capability capturing all four Stokes parameters (intensity, two linear polarization components, and circular polarization). Polstar's capabilities are designed to meet its goal of determining how circumstellar gas flows alter massive stars' evolution, and finding the consequences for the stellar remnant population and the stirring and enrichment of the interstellar medium, by addressing four key science objectives. In addition, Polstar will determine drivers for the alignment of the smallest interstellar grains, and probe the dust, magnetic fields, and environments in the hot diffuse interstellar medium, including for the first time a direct measurement of the polarized and energized properties of intergalactic dust. Polstar will also characterize processes that lead to the assembly of exoplanetary systems and that affect exoplanetary atmospheres and habitability. Science driven design requirements include: access to ultraviolet bands: where hot massive stars are brightest and circumstellar opacity is highest; high spectral resolution: accessing diagnostics of circumstellar gas flows and stellar composition in the far-UV at 122-200nm, including the NV, SiIV, and CIV resonance doublets and other transitions such as NIV, AlIII, HeII, and CIII; polarimetry: accessing diagnostics of circumstellar magnetic field shape and strength when combined with high FUV spectral resolution and diagnostics of stellar rotation and distribution of circumstellar gas when combined with low near-UV spectral resolution; sufficient signal-to-noise ratios: ~1000 for spectropolarimetric precisions of 0.1% per exposure; ~100 for detailed spectroscopic studies; ~10 for exploring dimmer sources; and cadence: ranging from 1-10 minutes for most wind variability studies., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, presented at SPIE Optics and Photonics 2021

As part of a study funded by NASA Headquarters, we are developing a Probe-class mission concept called the Cosmic Evolution Through UV Spectroscopy (CETUS). CETUS includes a 1.5-m aperture diameter telescope with a large field-of-view (FOV). CETUS includes three scientific instruments: a Far Ultraviolet (FUV) and Near Ultraviolet (NUV) imaging camera (CAM); a NUV Multi-Object Spectrograph (MOS); and a dual-channel Point Source Spectrograph (PSS) in the Lyman Ultraviolet (LUV), FUV, and NUV spectral regions. The large FOV Three Mirror Anastigmatic (TMA) Optical Telescope Assembly (OTA) simultaneously feeds the three separate scientific instruments. That is, the instruments view separate portions of the TMA image plane, enabling parallel operation of the three instruments. The field viewed by the MOS, whose design is based on an Offner-type spectrographic configuration to provide wide FOV correction, is actively configured to select and isolate numerous field sources using a next-generation Micro-Shutter Array (MSA). The two-channel camera design is also based on an Offner-like configuration. The Point Source Spectrograph (PSS) performs high spectral resolution spectroscopy on unresolved objects over the NUV region with spectral resolving power, R~ 40,000, in an echelle mode. The PSS also performs long-slit imaging spectroscopy at R~ 20,000 in the LUV and FUV spectral regions with two aberration-corrected, blazed, holographic gratings used in a Rowland-like configuration. The optical system also includes two Fine Guidance Sensors (FGS), and Wavefront Sensors (WFS) that sample numerous locations over the full OTA FOV. In-flight wavelength calibration is performed by a Wavelength Calibration System (WCS), and flat-fielding is also performed, both using in-flight calibration sources. This paper will describe the current optical design and the major trade studies leading to the design.

The mission concept, Cosmic Origins Through UV Surveys (CETUS) is an all-UV space mission concept that was selected and funded by NASA for study in 2017. The main capabilities of CETUS that even Hubble doesn't have are: (1) wide-field (17.4'x17.4') imaging and spectroscopy of astronomical sources with <0.5'' resolution; (2) spectral sensitivity to UV radiation at wavelengths as short as 1000 {\AA}; (3) near-UV multi-object slit spectroscopy; and (4) rapid-response UV spectroscopy and deep imaging of transients like GW 170817; and (5) 23 times higher sensitivity to extended sources. The main purposes of this CETUS Final Report are to describe the CETUS scientific program and to demonstrate the maturity of its instrumentation, which forms the basis of its estimated cost. While there are similarities of this Final Report to that submitted to NASA in March 2019 by the Goddard Space Flight Center, there are important differences including the following. * Science. The science case has been refreshed, deepened, and expanded as a result of ideas and recommendations expressed in the Astro2020 science white papers. * Instrumentation. Detailed investigations including a high-level error budget for focus with implications for thermal management, target acquisition in the MOS micro-shutter array, contamination control have been carried out. * Mission Design. The spacecraft and mission operations concepts as developed by NGIS Gilbert (formerly Orbital ATK) rather than the output of Goddard's Mission Design Lab have been adopted.. * Technology. We analyze fringe formation within Michelson-like experiments as viewed by relativistic inertial observers. Our analysis differs from previous work because we include optical misalignment of the beamsplitter of the interferometer due to the anamorphic geometry of relativistic Lorentz contraction. We conclude that inertial frame equivalence of Michelson-like experiments provide verification of the transverse Doppler Effect and exclude any model incorporating the relativistic Lorentz contraction effect., Comment: This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to the need for a major revision. The physical significance of anamorphic distortion in Section D requires further study, but it does not support the conclusions of the current paper

We propose an experiment using a conventional optical telescope to determine whether aberration of starlight results from special relativistic effects external to a measurement sensor or from optical effects within a sensor. The proposed measurements would discriminate between the two starlight aberration models in an Earth-based experiment. In addition, the measurements would yield an independent experimental test of relativistic time dilation.

High-precision astrometry can identify exoplanets and measure their orbits and masses, while coronagraphic imaging enables detailed characterization of their physical properties and atmospheric compositions through spectroscopy. In a previous paper, we showed that a diffractive pupil telescope (DPT) in space can enable sub-microarcsecond accuracy astrometric measurements from wide-field images by creating faint but sharp diffraction spikes around the bright target star. The DPT allows simultaneous astrometric measurement and coronagraphic imaging, and we discuss and quantify in this paper the scientific benefits of this combination for exoplanet science investigations: identification of exoplanets with increased sensitivity and robustness, and ability to measure planetary masses to high accuracy. We show how using both measurements to identify planets and measure their masses offers greater sensitivity and provides more reliable measurements than possible with separate missions, and therefore results in a large gain in mission efficiency. The combined measurements reliably identify potentially habitable planets in multiple systems with a few observations, while astrometry or imaging alone would require many measurements over a long time baseline. In addition, the combined measurement allows direct determination of stellar masses to percent-level accuracy, using planets as test particles. We also show that the DPT maintains the full sensitivity of the telescope for deep wide-field imaging, and is therefore compatible with simultaneous scientific observations unrelated to exoplanets. We conclude that astrometry, coronagraphy, and deep wide-field imaging can be performed simultaneously on a single telescope without significant negative impact on the performance of any of the three techniques., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures. Astrometric detection and mass determination of Earth-mass exoplanets requires sub-microarcsec accuracy, which is theoretically possible with an imaging space telescope using field stars as an astrometric reference. The measurement must however overcome astrometric distortions which are much larger than the photon noise limit. To address this issue, we propose to generate faint stellar diffraction spikes using a two-dimensional grid of regularly spaced small dark spots added to the surface of the primary mirror (PM). Accurate astrometric motion of the host star is obtained by comparing the position of the spikes to the background field stars. The spikes do not contribute to scattered light in the central part of the field and therefore allow unperturbed coronagraphic observation of the star's immediate surrounding. Because the diffraction spikes are created on the PM and imaged on the same focal plane detector as the background stars, astrometric distortions affect equally the diffraction spikes and the background stars, and are therefore calibrated. We describe the technique, detail how the data collected by the wide-field camera are used to derive astrometric motion, and identify the main sources of astrometric error using numerical simulations and analytical derivations. We find that the 1.4 m diameter telescope, 0.3 sq.deg field we adopt as a baseline design achieves 0.2 microarcsec single measurement astrometric accuracy. The diffractive pupil concept thus enables sub-microarcsec astrometry without relying on the accurate pointing, external metrology or high stability hardware required with previously proposed high precision astrometry concepts., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures. We present a physical-optics based theory of the physical mechanism for aberration of starlight. We apply non-relativistic and relativistic theories for wavefront image formation and include the effects of optically transmitting media within the sensor. We show that the sensors imaging properties combined with finite velocity of light fully accounts for aberration. That is, the influence of the moving sensor on the incident wavefront from the star fully explains aberration. Our treatment differs from all previous derivations because we include wavefront-imaging physics within the sensor model. Our predictions match Earth-sensor based measurements, but differ at larger sensor speeds from predictions of the special relativistic-based theory. While experimental uncertainty resulting from the low Earth-orbital velocity prevents experimental confirmation of the special relativistic model of aberration, we find that Earth-based sensors containing refractive optical media could experimentally differentiate between these competing descriptions and, in addition, yield an independent test of time dilation. We derive and present the details of such an experiment.

We present a compelling case for a systematic and comprehensive study of the resolved and unresolved stellar populations, ISM, and immediate environments of galaxies throughout the local volume, defined here as D < 20 Mpc. This volume is our cosmic backyard and the smallest volume that encompasses environments as different as the Virgo, Ursa Major, Fornax and (perhaps) Eridanus clusters of galaxies, a large number and variety of galaxy groups, and several cosmic void regions. In each galaxy, through a pan-chromatic (160--1100nm) set of broad-band and diagnostic narrow-band filters, ISM structures and individual luminous stars to >~1 mag below the TRGB should be resolved on scales of <5 pc (at D <~ 20 Mpc, lambda ~ 800nm, for mu_I >~ 24 mag/arcsec^2 and m_{I,TRGB} <~ 27.5 mag). Resolved and unresolved stellar populations would be analyzed through color-magnitude and color-color diagram fitting and population synthesis modeling of multi-band colors and would yield physical properties such as spatially resolved star formation histories. The ISM within and around each galaxy would be analyzed using key narrow-band filters that distinguish photospheric from shock heating and provide information on the metallicity of the gas. Such a study would finally allow unraveling the global and spatially resolved star formation histories of galaxies, their assembly, satellite systems, and the dependences thereof on local and global environment within a truly representative cosmic volume. The proposed study is not feasible with current instrumentation but argues for a wide-field (>~250 arcmin^2), high-resolution (<~0.020"--0.065" [300--1000nm]), ultraviolet--near-infrared imaging facility on a 4m-class space-based observatory., Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX2e requires 'fancyheadings_b.sty' (included), 3 postscript figures. The Star Formation Camera (SFC) is a wide-field (~15'x19, >280 arcmin^2), high-resolution (18x18 mas pixels) UV/optical dichroic camera designed for the Theia 4-m space-borne space telescope concept. SFC will deliver diffraction-limited images at lambda > 300 nm in both a blue (190-517nm) and a red (517-1075nm) channel simultaneously. Our aim is to conduct a comprehensive and systematic study of the astrophysical processes and environments relevant for the births and life cycles of stars and their planetary systems, and to investigate and understand the range of environments, feedback mechanisms, and other factors that most affect the outcome of the star and planet formation process. This program addresses the origins and evolution of stars, galaxies, and cosmic structure and has direct relevance for the formation and survival of planetary systems like our Solar System and planets like Earth. We present the design and performance specifications resulting from the implementation study of the camera, conducted under NASA's Astrophysics Strategic Mission Concept Studies program, which is intended to assemble realistic options for mission development over the next decade. The result is an extraordinarily capable instrument that will provide deep, high-resolution imaging across a very wide field enabling a great variety of community science as well as completing the core survey science that drives the design of the camera. The technology associated with the camera is next generation but still relatively high TRL, allowing a low-risk solution with moderate technology development investment over the next 10 years. The Telescope to Observe Planetary Systems (TOPS) is a proposed space mission to image in the visible (0.4-0.9 micron) planetary systems of nearby stars simultaneously in 16 spectral bands (resolution R~20). For the ~10 most favorable stars, it will have the sensitivity to discover 2 R_E rocky planets within habitable zones and characterize their surfaces or atmospheres through spectrophotometry. Many more massive planets and debris discs will be imaged and characterized for the first time. With a 1.2m visible telescope, the proposed mission achieves its power by exploiting the most efficient and robust coronagraphic and wavefront control techniques. The Phase-Induced Amplitude Apodization (PIAA) coronagraph used by TOPS allows planet detection at 2 lambda/d with nearly 100% throughput and preserves the telescope angular resolution. An efficient focal plane wavefront sensing scheme accurately measures wavefront aberrations which are fed back to the telescope active primary mirror. Fine wavefront control is also performed independently in each of 4 spectral channels, resulting in a system that is robust to wavefront chromaticity., Comment: 12 pages, SPIE conference proceeding, May 2006, Orlando, Florida

Using 2 aspheric mirrors, it is possible to apodize a telescope beam without losing light or angular resolution: the output beam is produced by ``remapping'' the entrance beam to produce the desired light intensity distribution in a new pupil. We present the Phase-Induced Amplitude Apodization Coronagraph (PIAAC) concept, which uses this technique, and we show that it allows efficient direct imaging of extrasolar terrestrial planets with a small-size telescope in space. The suitability of the PIAAC for exoplanet imaging is due to a unique combination of achromaticity, small inner working angle (about 1.5 $\lambda/d$), high throughput, high angular resolution and large field of view. 3D geometrical raytracing is used to investigate the off-axis aberrations of PIAAC configurations, and show that a field of view of more than 100 $\lambda/d$ in radius is available thanks to the correcting optics of the PIAAC. Angular diameter of the star and tip-tilt errors can be compensated for by slightly increasing the size of the occulting mask in the focal plane, with minimal impact on the system performance. Earth-size planets at 10 pc can be detected in less than 30s with a 4m telescope. The Cosmic Evolution Through UV Spectroscopy (CETUS) concept enables parallel observations by the UV multiobject spectrometer (MOS) and near-UV/far-UV camera which operate simultaneously but independently with their separate field of views. The near-UV MOS can target up to 100 objects at a time without confusion with nearby sources or background zodiacal light. This multiplexing will allow over 100,000 galaxies to be observed over a typical mission lifetime. The MOS includes a next-generation micro-shutter array (NGMSA), an efficient aspheric Offner-like spectrometer design with a convex grating, and nanotube light traps for suppressing unwanted wavelengths. The NUV/FUV Camera has the capability to image in a range of sub-bands from 115-400 nm at the same time the MOS is operating at 180-350 nm. The UV camera has a similar Offner-like relay, selectable filters, and two separate detectors to optimize observing in either the far-UV (115-175 nm) or the near-UV (180-400 nm) utilizing a CsI Micro-Channel Plate detector (MCP) and a CCD respectively.

The Gondola for High-Altitude Planetary Science (GHAPS) project is a balloon-borne astronomical observatory designed operate in the UV, Visible, and near-mid IR spectral region. The GHAPS Optical Telescope Assembly (OTA) is designed around a one meter aperture narrow field-of-view telescope with near diffraction limited performance. GHAPS will utilize Wallops Arc-Second Pointing System (WASP) for pointing the OTA with an accuracy of 1 arc second or better. WASP relies heavily on a self-contained star tracker assembly to determine the OTA line of sight. Preliminary structural analysis indicated that potential misalignments could be present between the OTA line of sight and the star tracker FOV center during the expected flight conditions that could compromise GHAPS pointing accuracy. An analysis is presented that estimates the worst case long-term (or bias) pointing misalignments for the GHAPS opto-mechanical configuration, examines the need for additional hardware to correct pointing errors, and determines the best hardware and software implementation to do so. The analysis includes the development of a photometric model to predict the limiting magnitude of a GHAPS Facility Guide System (FGS) for a variety of image sensor technologies from visible to mid IR. FGS system performance is estimated using star magnitude and spectral data from actual star catalogs for more realistic predictions. Based on expected performance and other factors, such as size, weight, power, and cost, a final recommendation is made for the GHAPS configuration.

Quantitative comparisons of performance and qualitative estimates of other factors such as mass, volume, power consumption, and cost are combined into an overall assessment of potential solutions. Results are discussed and a recommended implementation is given that is optimized to best achieve pointing performance goals, while minimizing impact to the design, cost, and resources of the GHAPS project.

The objective of the project was to investigate the utility of using an A/F37A-T4G T-37 flight simulator within the context of Air Force undergraduate pilot training. Twenty-one subjects, selected from three undergraduate pilot training classes, were given contact flight training in a TP4G/EPT simulator before going to T-37 aircraft for further training. Fourteen of these subjects were also given instrument training in the T-4G/EPT before completing such training in the aircraft. The remaining seven subjects received instrument training in the UPT T-4 instrument and procedures trainer. A specially designed syllabus was used which incorporated batch training, proficiency advancement, and other revised instructional strategies. Check pilot scores for each of the instructional phases were used in comparing performances of the experimental subjects with those of the conventionally trained students. Results indicate devices having the capabilities of the T-4G could be used to achieve an average saving per student of three aircraft hours in contact flight training and ten hours in instrument training. Results also indicate a savings of eight aircraft hours could be achieved in instrument training by using the specially devised syllabus of instruction with existing T-4 instrument trainers. The report's brief introduction describes the application of T-4G methodology to the T-37 instrument phase of undergraduate pilot training. The methodology is characterized by instruction in trainers, proficiency advancement, a highly structured syllabus, the training manager concept, early exposure to instrument training, and hands-on training. The introduction also describes the results of a test of the methodology, in which one particular flight training class required an average of 42 percent fewer flying hours (8.8 aircraft hours) than are included in the regular T-37 instrument syllabus. The bulk of the report consists of an appendix whose first part consists of discussions of problems associated with the T-4G Methodology T-37 Syllabus, instructor pilot reactions to the syllabus, results of the application of the syllabus, grade adjustment information for the test population, and recommendations. The bulk of the appendix (60 pages) consists of the syllabus which includes special instructions, task objectives, and performance criteria for the following areas of T-37 flight training: flying training; contact training; instrument trainer training (including basic instruction, basic maneuvers, radio navigation, radar, and mission profile); instrument flight training; navigation training; and formation training.
