The morphology of glacier beds is a first-order control on their slip speeds and consequent rates of subglacial erosion. As such, constraining the range of bed shapes expected beneath glaciers will improve estimates of glacier slip speeds. To estimate the variability of subglacial bed morphology, we construct 10 high-resolution (10 cm) digital elevation models of proglacial areas near current glacier margins from point clouds produced through a combination of terrestrial laser scanning and photogrammetry techniques. The proglacial areas are located in the Swiss Alps and the Canadian Rockies and consist of predominantly debris-free bedrock of variable lithology (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic). We measure eight different spatial parameters intended to describe bed morphologies generated beneath glaciers. Using probability density functions, Bhattacharyya coefficients, principal component analysis, and Bayesian statistical models we investigate the significance of these spatial parameters. We find that the parameters span similar ranges, but the means and standard deviations of the parameter probability density functions are commonly distinct. These results indicate that glacier flow over bedrock may lead to a convergence toward a common bed morphology. However, distinct properties associated with each location prevent morphologies from being uniform.

Sequencing of exomes and genomes has revealed abundant genetic variation affecting the coding sequences of human transcription factors (TFs), but the consequences of such variation remain largely unexplored. We developed a computational, structure-based approach to evaluate TF variants for their impact on DNA binding activity and used universal protein-binding microarrays to assay sequence-specific DNA binding activity across 41 reference and 117 variant alleles found in individuals of diverse ancestries and families with Mendelian diseases. We found 77 variants in 28 genes that affect DNA binding affinity or specificity and identified thousands of rare alleles likely to alter the DNA binding activity of human sequence-specific TFs. Our results suggest that most individuals have unique repertoires of TF DNA binding activities, which may contribute to phenotypic variation., National Human Genome Research Institute (U.S.) (Grant R01 HG003985)

Estimates that by 2050, the global population could reach 9 billion, with the growth concentrated in poorer countries, particularly the low-income countries of Sub-Saharan Africa. Agricultural productivity will need to double to meet everyone’s needs for food, so producers must increase yields and cropping intensity, improve livestock productivity, and quite possibly diversify their economic activities on and off of the farm, all of which can benefit from revolutionary changes in information and communication technology (ICT), including (1) using multispectral satellite images and energy surface balance models to calculate crop and water productivity; (2) crowdsourcing supplier data via mobile phone; (3) combining gaming and crowdsourcing to identify and monitor cropland; (4) generating open access, spatially explicit data sets, and analyses for more productive farming and better livelihoods in Africa; (5) using the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) Crop Composition Database; and (6) using big data to provide localized weather and agronomic information to producers.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To determine if prolongation of the interdevice interval in children receiving bilateral cochlear implants adversely affects speech perception outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. METHODS: Retrospective review of our pediatric cochlear implant database was performed. Children who had undergone revision surgery or had less than 12 months listening experience with either the first or second implant were excluded. The interdevice interval, best Phonetically Balanced Kindergarten word lists (PBK) score from each ear, and demographic data about each patient were collected. A ratio of PBK was generated (PBK second side/PBK first side) to minimize potential confounding from other individual patient factors that affect speech outcomes. RESULTS: Two hundred forty children met the study criteria. Mean age at first cochlear implantation (CI) was 3.2 years (0.6-17.9), and the second was 6.6 years (0.8-22.4). Mean best PBK score from the first CI side was 83.8% (0-100), and the second was 67.5% (0-100) (P < .001). When the PBK ratio was plotted against interdevice interval, R(2) was 0.47 (P < .001). When analyzed for hearing stability, those with a progressive loss history demonstrated less influence of prolonged interdevice interval on performance. Multivariate analysis did not identify other factors influencing the ratio. A line of best fit for those with stable hearing loss suggested best outcomes were with an interdevice interval less than 3 to 4 years. Beyond 7 to 8 years, very few achieved useful speech recognition from the second CI. CONCLUSIONS: Where possible, the second implant should be received within 3 to 4 years of the first to maximize outcome in those with stable, severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss.
