Abstract

There has been an increase in volume as well as an improvement in overall survival (OS) after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) for hematologic disorders. It is unknown if these changes have affected racial/ethnic minorities equally. In this observational study from the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research of 79 904 autologous (auto) and 65 662 allogeneic (allo) HCTs, we examined the volume and rates of change of autoHCT and alloHCT over time and trends in OS in 4 racial/ethnic groups: non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs), non-Hispanic African Americans (NHAAs), and Hispanics across 5 2-year cohorts from 2009 to 2018. Rates of change were compared using Poisson model. Adjusted and unadjusted Cox proportional hazards models examined trends in mortality in the 4 racial/ethnic groups over 5 study time periods. The rates of increase in volume were significantly higher for Hispanics and NHAAs vs NHW for both autoHCT and alloHCT. Adjusted overall mortality after autoHCT was comparable across all racial/ethnic groups. NHAA adults (hazard ratio [HR] 1.13; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04-1.22; P = .004) and pediatric patients (HR 1.62; 95% CI 1.3-2.03; P < .001) had a higher risk of mortality after alloHCT than NHWs. Improvement in OS over time was seen in all 4 groups after both autoHCT and alloHCT. Our study shows the rate of change for the use of autoHCT and alloHCT is higher in NHAAs and Hispanics than in NHWs. Survival after autoHCT and alloHCT improved over time; however, NHAAs have worse OS after alloHCT, which has persisted. Continued efforts are needed to mitigate disparities for patients requiring alloHCT.

JISA is a software library, written in Java, aimed at providing an easy, flexible and standardised means of creating experimental control software for physical sciences researchers. Specifically, with an emphasis on enabling measurement code to be written in an instrument-agnostic way, allowing such routines to be reused across multiple different setups without requiring modification. Additionally, it provides a simple means of recording and handling data, as well as pre-built graphical user interface (GUI) "blocks" to enable the relatively easy creation of graphical control systems. 5. Revealing contributions to conduction from transport within ordered and disordered regions in highly doped conjugated polymers through analysis of temperature-dependent Hall measurements

Abstract

Hall effect measurements in doped polymer semiconductors are widely reported, but are difficult to interpret due to screening of Hall voltages by carriers undergoing incoherent transport. Here, we propose a refined analysis for such Hall measurements, based on measuring the Hall coefficient as a function of temperature, and modelling carriers as existing in a regime of variable "deflectability" (i.e. how strongly they "feel" the magnetic part of the Lorentz force). By linearly interpolating each carrier between the extremes of no deflection and full deflection, we demonstrate that it is possible to extract the (time-averaged) concentration of deflectable charge carriers, $\left$, the average, temperature-dependent mobility of those carriers, $\left<\mu_d\right>(T)$, as well as the ratio of conductivity that comes from such deflectable transport, $d(T)$. Our method was enabled by the construction of an improved AC Hall measurement system, as well as an improved data extraction method. We measured Hall bar devices of ion-exchange doped films of PBTTT-C$_{14}$ from 10--300 K. Our analysis provides evidence for the proportion of conductivity arising from deflectable transport, $d(T)$, increasing with doping level, ranging between 15.4% and 16.4% at room temperature. When compared to total charge-carrier-density estimates from independent methods, the values of $\left$ extracted suggest that carriers spend $\sim$37% of their time of flight being deflectable in the most highly doped of the devices measured here. The extracted values of $d(T)$ being less than half this value thus suggest that the limiting factor for conductivity in such highly doped devices is carrier mobility, rather than concentration., Comment: Accepted for publication in APS Physical Review Materials

Abstract

Many social animals can recognize other individuals by their vocalizations. This requires a memory system capable of mapping incoming acoustic signals to one of many known individuals. Using the zebra finch, a social songbird that uses songs and distance calls to communicate individual identity (Elie and Theunissen, 2018), we tested the role of two cortical-like brain regions in a vocal recognition task. We found that the rostral region of the Cadomedial Nidopallium (NCM), a secondary auditory region of the avian pallium, was necessary for maintaining auditory memories for conspecific vocalizations in both male and female birds, whereas HVC (used as a proper name), a premotor areas that gates auditory input into the vocal motor and song learning pathways in male birds (Roberts and Mooney, 2013), was not. Both NCM and HVC have previously been implicated for processing the tutor song in the context of song learning (Sakata and Yazaki-Sugiyama, 2020). Our results suggest that NCM might not only store songs as templates for future vocal imitation but also songs and calls for perceptual discrimination of vocalizers in both male and female birds. NCM could therefore operate as a site for auditory memories for vocalizations used in various facets of communication. We also observed that new auditory memories could be acquired without intact HVC or NCM but that for these new memories NCM lesions caused deficits in either memory capacity or auditory discrimination. These results suggest that the high-capacity memory functions of the avian pallial auditory system depend on NCM.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Many aspects of vocal communication require the formation of auditory memories. Voice recognition, for example, requires a memory for vocalizers to identify acoustical features. In both birds and primates, the locus and neural correlates of these high-level memories remain poorly described. Previous work suggests that this memory formation is mediated by high-level sensory areas, not traditional memory areas such as the hippocampus. Using lesion experiments, we show that one secondary auditory brain region in songbirds that had previously been implicated in storing song memories for vocal imitation is also implicated in storing vocal memories for individual recognition. The role of the neural circuits in this region in interpreting the meaning of communication calls should be investigated in the future.

9. High School History Textbooks and the Causes of the Great Depression: Missing the Obvious

Abstract

Years ago, it became established that the severity and length of the Great Depression were due largely to misguided Federal Reserve monetary policy and the resulting catastrophic bank failures. This result is confirmed by surveys of scholars in the area and books specifically written on economic history. Yet the leading textbooks used in high school US history fail to reflect these findings. The texts (1) tend to ignore the recognized causes of the Great Depression's severity and (2) overstate the role of other causes rejected by the majority of economic historians. After laying out this curious disjuncture, this article presents curricular resources to help high school teachers more accurately present the Great Depression's causes.

In order to do so, we study the uniform hyperbolicity of a Schrodinger cocycle generated by the SL(2,R) transfer matrices. 12. The Hall effect for probing conjugated polymer charge transport in high carrier density regimes

Abstract

Conjugated polymer semiconductors hold much promise when it comes to their potential for novel applications. Their ability to form uniform films from solution is generally thought to be of high value to industry, opening up the possibilities promised by large area electronics manufacturing. Probing charge transport in these materials often proves difficult. Hall effect mea- surements, a mainstay of semiconductor characterisation in more traditional materials, provide anomalous results when used on polymers. This often leads to inaccurate claims being made off the back of erroneously interpreted Hall data and, in some cases, missing out on interesting physics that gets "screened out" of the Hall effect in these materials. It is for these reasons that a means of both efficiently acquiring and properly interpreting Hall data in polymers was sought. This thesis recounts the creation of a new AC system for measuring the Hall effect in shorter time spans than those required by superconducting electromagnet systems. This is followed by a series of measurements and analysis, leading to the construction of a new model for describing how the Hall coefficient in these materials varies with temperature, and allowing for multiple interesting parameters to be determined. This model is built around a central concept of different carriers in a polymer system having different degrees of average coupling, g, to a magnetic field. This is assumed to be described by a statistical distribution characterised by its average value, ⟨g⟩. This, and other parameters that can be extracted from this modelling, are an exciting prospect for areas of research involving material optimisation. Insights into the average degree of delocalisation of carriers, relative levels of energetic disorder as well as hopping dimensionality can all theoretically be determined. This is in addition to the traditional quantities typically extracted from Hall measurements: mobile charge carrier density and mobility. By performing these analyses on data measured from ion-exchange doped PBTTT, P3HT and IDT-BT, as well as electrochemically gated DPP-BTz, several interesting results were determined. These include values, such as the hopping temperature coefficient for PBTTT, that indicated these polymer systems exhibit a greater amount of energetic order when they are doped. Similarly, for PBTTT, it has been shown that the overall degree of delocalisation of carriers increases for greater doping levels. The most highly-doped PBTTT device was also found to exhibit diminishing returns on conductivity enhancement with greater carrier densities, owing to decreasing mobilities. This suggests that it approaches a limit on conductivity through increased doping alone, while independent, spectroscopic carrier-density measurements suggest this is occurring at a near-100% level of doping efficiency. Measurements on the less conductive systems proved to be more difficult, and led to many of them not being able to be fully fit. However, some useful insights were still gained. DPP-BTz was observed to change from p-type to n-type transport when doped highly enough. Beyond this, its conductivity would also start to decrease the further into this n-type regime the doping went. It was therefore concluded that the limit of one carrier per monomer unit must have been reached and exceeded, causing the band to no-longer be limited by hole transport. This similarly suggested that at high gate voltages, DPP-BTz Organic Electrochemical Transistor (OECT) devices were also capable of achieving near-100% doping efficiencies. Perhaps the most intriguing result of all is the promise the model and analyses in this thesis hold. While much analysis was limited by the number of data points available in many cases, as well as the quality of the data in some cases, it nonetheless showed that it is possible to extract useful information from the Hall effect in these materials when treated carefully. Future work can therefore focus on using these tools to analyse better and denser data, enabling it to use the findings in this thesis as a tool in the drive forward to optimise these polymer systems, thus perhaps enabling their use across their many potential applications.

Abstract

Doped organic semiconductors are critical to emerging device applications, including thermoelectrics, bioelectronics, and neuromorphic computing devices. It is commonly assumed that low conductivities in these materials result primarily from charge trapping by the Coulomb potentials of the dopant counterions. Here, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study rebutting this belief. Using a newly developed doping technique based on ion exchange, we prepare highly doped films with several counterions of varying size and shape and characterize their carrier density, electrical conductivity, and paracrystalline disorder. In this uniquely large data set composed of several classes of high-mobility conjugated polymers, each doped with at least five different ions, we find electrical conductivity to be strongly correlated with paracrystalline disorder but poorly correlated with ionic size, suggesting that Coulomb traps do not limit transport. A general model for interacting electrons in highly doped polymers is proposed and carefully parametrized against atomistic calculations, enabling the calculation of electrical conductivity within the framework of transient localization theory. Theoretical calculations are in excellent agreement with experimental data, providing insights into the disorder-limited nature of charge transport and suggesting new strategies to further improve conductivities.

We will study the spectrum of a discrete Schr ̈odinger operator called the periodic Anderson-Bernoulli operator. Because the operator is ergodic, we can use techniques in dynamical systemsand apply Johnson’s Theorem to better understand this operator. These techniques involve study-ing the hyperbolic locus of SL(2, R) cocycles and the geometry of the hyperbolic locus in SL(2, R)n.This model has a spectrum that is completely pure-point, and there exist parameters such that thespectrum can be defined as the union of an infinite number of intervals, which is unexpected formultiple reasons. A result of Avila, Damanik, and Gorodetski [2] says that if the Anderson modelhas a background potential defined by a dynamical system with a continuous phase space, thensuch a result is impossible. In this model, the background potential is periodic, making that resultnot applicable. This thesis provides details of this work, as well as insight into where this workmay progress.

Abstract

BackgroundThe association of community factors and outcomes after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) has not been comprehensively described. Using the County Health Rankings and Roadmaps (CHRR) and the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR), this study evaluated the impact of community health status on allogeneic HCT outcomes.MethodsThis study included 18,544 adult allogeneic HCT recipients reported to the CIBMTR by 170 US centers in 2014-2016. Sociodemographic, environmental, and community indicators were derived from the CHRR, an aggregate community risk score was created, and scores were assigned to each patient (patient community risk score [PCS]) and transplant center (center community risk score [CCS]). Higher scores indicated less healthy communities. The impact of PCS and CCS on patient outcomes after allogeneic HCT was studied.ResultsThe median age was 55 years (range, 18-83 years). The median PCS was -0.21 (range, -1.37 to 2.10; standard deviation [SD], 0.42), and the median CCS was -0.13 (range, -1.04 to 0.96; SD, 0.40). In multivariable analyses, a higher PCS was associated with inferior survival (hazard ratio [HR] per 1 SD increase, 1.04; 99% CI, 1.00-1.08; P = .0089). Among hematologic malignancies, a tendency toward inferior survival was observed with a higher PCS (HR, 1.04; 99% CI, 1.00-1.08; P = .0102); a higher PCS was associated with higher nonrelapse mortality (NRM; HR, 1.08; 99% CI, 1.02-1.15; P = .0004). CCS was not significantly associated with survival, relapse, or NRM.ConclusionsPatients residing in counties with a worse community health status have inferior survival as a result of an increased risk of NRM after allogeneic HCT. There was no association between the community health status of the transplant center location and allogeneic HCT outcomes.

Abstract

Follow-up is integral for hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) care to ensure surveillance and intervention for complications. We characterized the incidence of and predictors for being lost to follow-up. Two-year survivors of first allogeneic HCT (10,367 adults and 3865 children) or autologous HCT (7291 adults and 467 children) for malignant/nonmalignant disorders between 2002 and 2013 reported to the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research were selected. The cumulative incidence of being lost to follow-up (defined as having missed 2 consecutive follow-up reporting periods) was calculated. Marginal Cox models (adjusted for center effect) were fit to evaluate predictors. The 10-year cumulative incidence of being lost to follow-up was 13% (95% confidence interval [CI], 12% to 14%) in adult allogeneic HCT survivors, 15% (95% CI, 14% to 16%) in adult autologous HCT survivors, 25% (95% CI, 24% to 27%) in pediatric allogeneic HCT survivors, and 24% (95% CI, 20% to 29%) in pediatric autologous HCT survivors. Factors associated with being lost to follow-up include younger age, nonmalignant disease, public/no insurance (reference: private), residence farther from the tranplantation center, and being unmarried in adult allogeneic HCT survivors; older age and testicular/germ cell tumor (reference: non-Hodgkin lymphoma) in adult autologous HCT survivors; older age, public/no insurance (reference: private), and nonmalignant disease in pediatric allogeneic HCT survivors; and older age in pediatric autologous HCT survivors. Follow-up focusing on minimizing attrition in high-risk groups is needed to ensure surveillance for late effects.
