A single-stream swirling turbulent mixing layer was produced in which the angular momentum instability acts over most of the layer for most of its development length. The instability is associated with a large increase in the level of the conventional Reynolds stresses over those in an unswirled mixing layer. This paper presents measurements of the three-dimensionality of the mean flow at one axial location well downstream of the origin. The output of a fixed hot-wire probe was ensemble-averaged to produce an approximation to the mean flow field that would be seen by a rotating observer. The main goals of this study were to establish the presence or absence of Taylor-Goertler vortices found in unstable laminar boundary layers. The variations in the mean velocities and Reynolds stresses are generally consistent with a bodily 'wrinkling' of the mixing layer, without a significant variation in the layer thickness. The wrinkling is most probably a result of circumferential variations in the initial boundary layer, which in turn originate at the swirl generator.

Detailed measurements of all three mean velocity components and five of the six Reynolds stresses have been made around a model of a lifting-wing/body junction. The body was the flat working section floor of a small blower wind tunnel. Measurements of the surface pressure distribution on the NACA 0012 wing showed that the lift coefficient at the body surface was reduced by only 16 percent from the freestream value. It is shown that the near constancy of the bound vorticity requires the formation of aixal vorticity within the body boundary layer. This vorticity was concentrated in the two legs of the necklace vortex formed near the leading edge of the wing. The magnitude of the vorticity was always greater in the leg that developed on the suction surface. By four chord lengths downstream of the trailing edge, the turbulence structure of the suction leg was qualitatively similar to that of a single vortex imbedded in a turbulent boundary layer.

Effects of swirl on the development of an axisymmetric turbulent mixing layer have been studied. The development of the zero swirl case is found to be consistent with that of a single-stream mixing layer developing from a tripped boundary layer. In particular, the consistency of the measured stress levels shows the accuracy of the measurement system. Swirl increases all the Reynolds stress levels with the increased scaling with swirl number. The shear stresses are found to be affected significantly more than the normal stresses. The stress increases are partly explained by considering extra production terms in the transport equations that are activated by the presense of the swirl. The thickness and growth rate for the lower swirl rate are found to be comparable to the zero swirl case, while those for the higher swirl rate are increased significantly, in line with the increased Reynolds stresses.

Radiation cataractogenesis induced by small acute doses of particulate radiations and photons in the New Zealand white rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), the beagle dog (Canis familiaris) and the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) is discussed in the context of the use of animal models to assess the radiation hazards faced by humans during lengthy sojourns in deep space. Attention is paid to (1) the importance of lifespan studies with long-lived species - the above animals have median lifespans in captivity of 5-7, 13-14 and 25 years, respectively; and (2) the magnitudes of possible dose thresholds for cataractogenesis from sparsely ionizing radiations and the modifications of those thresholds by the late degenerative phase of the phenomenon.

In this paper an investigation of the velocity fluctuations in the free stream above an incompressible turbulent boundary layer developing at constant pressure is described. It is assumed that the fluctuations receive contributions from three statistically independent sources: (1) one-dimensional unsteadiness, (2) free-stream turbulence, and (3) the irrotational motion induced by the turbulent boundary layer. Measurements were made in a wind tunnel with a root-mean-square level of the axial velocity fluctuations of about 0.2%. All three velocity components were measured using an X-wire probe. The unsteadiness was determined from the spanwise covariance of the axial velocity fluctuations, measured using two single-wire probes. The results show that it is possible to separate the contributions to the rms level of the velocity fluctuations without resorting to the dubious technique of high-pass filtering. This separation could be extended to the spectral densities of the contributions if measurements of sufficient accuracy were available.

The relationship between the spectra of the three normal stresses near a turbulent shear layer is derived from the constraint of irrotationality. The relationship implies that the common practice of determining time scales of the turbulence from spectra in the near field is not valid. This implication is reinforced by a discussion of the scaling of irrotational spectra that follows from the formulation of Phillips (1975).

The processes present in a turbulent boundary layer (BL) which experiences a sudden change in the surface roughness are discussed in terms of numerical models in comparison with empirical data. Consideration is limited to flow perturbations which preserve the BL approximation. Generalized continuity, momentum and turbulent energy transport equations are reviewed. The perturbed BL has two regions: one with large velocity gradients and an outer zone with smaller gradients. Expressions are defined for the velocity and temperature profiles and the roughness length after a step change in surface roughness, which causes the disturbance. A pertrurbation could also arise from a heat flux input of a pressure gradient. The effects of the shape of the perturbing step and the presence of several disturbing edges are explored. Finally, it is shown that closure forms and constants for self-preserving flows are worthy of further development because of their demonstrable abilities to describe simple perturbed flows.
