- Abstract
Over the past decades, two persisting priorities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) training have been: (1) increasing the knowledge of and access to careers beyond academic scientist; and (2) increasing the diversity of the STEM workforce. Previous studies show that a uniquely constructed career coaching group provides strong support and progress for both priorities. This report extends this design into a more sustainable model that is positioned within the professional context of rising young scientists. This new model is based in the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET)--the ASPET Mentoring Network. Groups of PhD students and postdocs were assigned to an ASPET professional (academic or other career) member (the coach) with an initial meeting held the day before the society's annual meeting. The coaching groups interacted during the meeting and then virtually for a year. Extensive survey and interview evaluation data gathered from the first three cohorts (12 coaching groups) in 2016-2018 provided strong evidence of the perceived and real benefits of the network. This new version of career coaching groups is both feasible and linked to career success due to its close association with a scientific society, peers, and coaches who share scientific identities and aspirations.

The challenges faced by youth can hinder them from reaching their full potential or help them grow and develop as they overcome their challenges. Grit and resilience provide young people with the skills, confidence, and perseverance to overcome challenges, pursue their goals and thrive. In this article, the authors examine the complex constructs that make up resilience and grit, draw connections to positive youth development practices, and propose a model of how these constructs can be enacted by youth development professionals in their work. The article offers specific educational practices that can support young people in developing the skills and characteristics of resilience and grit. Skills and characteristics which can aid youth in overcoming challenges and thriving now and into their future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

9. Impact of the Nova Scotia School Accreditation Program on Teaching and Student Learning: An Initial Study
- Author
-
Wood, Christine and Meyer, Matthew J.
- Abstract
School accreditation is one process currently mandated in Nova Scotia schools to facilitate school improvement efforts. This mixed methods study sought to discover and describe the impact of the Nova Scotia School Accreditation Program (NSSAP) specifically on teaching and student learning in three secondary schools in one school board. Surveys, interviews, and school documents provided data concerning the nature of each school's respective improvement goals and subsequent implemented strategies. An analysis follows that considers the NSSAP impact on teacher participation and student achievement, and the ambiguity of program success. (Contains 3 footnotes, 2 tables and 3 figures.)

628.53 ,Hydrogen sulphide pollution - Abstract
The occurrence of hydrogen sulphide in the environment, the reasons for concern about the levels which may be present, particularly on off-shore installations, and methods for determining the gas in air are reviewed. The original aim of this project was to explain the reasons for the variations in the levels of naturally occurring hydrogen sulphide over the estuary of the Don at Aberdeen. The monitoring work required a reliable method: as the published methods were all problematical, much effort was expended in improving the Ethylene Blue method and investigating the range of trapping solutions. The final optimised method has been published (Analyst 1988, 113, 1635). An alternative method for standardising H2S in air gas mixes has also been developed and used on commercial samples. Microbiological studies have shown that sulphate-reducing bacteria were not present in the sediments of the Don estuary in 1988 (but were present in sediments from the Forth estuary) and further, that the Don sediments would not support growth of SRB's, which in part explains why there has been effectively no release of H2S from the estuary in recent years. Attempts have been made to correlate the H2S emission events with changes in river water quality over the last ten years, but no obvious clues have become evident.

27. Making Gender Matter: Knowledge Ecologies, Contested Research Objects, and the Trajectory of Women's and Gender Studies in American Universities, 1970-2010

Wood, Christine Virginia
- Abstract
This dissertation examines the trajectory of research programs on women and gender in American universities between 1970 and 2010. The dissertation melds perspectives in the sociology of science with organizational analyses of the development of academic disciplines. The analysis forwards a new understanding of how local conditions in research settings influence the trajectory of interdisciplinary development. Women's and gender studies is an interdisciplinary field that originated in connection with second wave feminism and the accompanying view that previous scholarship had omitted women when drawing conclusions about the population. In its developmental trajectory women's studies underwent a process of intellectual and institutional diversification. Women's studies programs began with uniform intellectual goals: to address the lack of scholarship on women and to analyze problems related to sex stratification. As programs spread, scholars across institutions redefined their research interests, incorporating topics that transcended the study of women, such as masculinities and sexual identity. The diversification of research agendas in gender studies across universities was uneven, a result of shifting resources and relationships within programs and the pliable quality of objects of analysis like "women" and "gender," which are used in increasingly diverse ways. I introduce the concepts of knowledge "ecologies" and "supple objects" to explain the diversification of women's and gender studies programs and departments, arguing that the local conditions within departments bore an intimate relationship with the way scholars defined and use core categories of knowledge over time, and, consequently, with the way departments set priorities around studying women and gender. The finding that programs began with homogenous content and diversified only later in their development is distinct from "new institutional" models that see the departments that form a discipline as becoming more structurally similar over time, as well as models that see departments as bearing the distinct imprints of their founding conditions over time. Data are archival records from women's and gender studies departments and programs, semi-structured interviews with professors, data on employment and career trajectories of scholars with appointments in programs, and content analysis of research output. - Abstract
Objective: To understand the association between parenting and children's dietary fat consumption, this study tested a comprehensive model of parenting that included parent household rules, parent modeling of rules, parent mediated behaviors, and parent support. Design: Cross-sectional. Setting: Baseline data from the "MOVE/me Muevo" project, a recreation site-based obesity prevention and control intervention trial. Participants: Five hundred forty-one parents of children between the ages of 5 and 8 years and living in San Diego County. Main Outcome Measure: Children's fat consumption based on parent report using a short food frequency questionnaire. Analysis: A hierarchical linear regression was conducted. In exploratory analyses, a stepwise backward elimination approach was used. Results: Children's fat consumption was positively associated with parent household rules (P less than 0.01) and negatively associated with parent modeling of rules (P less than 0.01). Conclusions and Implications: Controlling parenting behaviors, such as rule setting, are associated with more frequent fat consumption, whereas role modeling healthful behaviors is associated with less frequent fat consumption. Changing parenting behaviors with regard to how they feed their children is a logical avenue for improving eating behaviors. (Contains 3 tables.)

Providing evidence-based and scientifically robust risk assessments, as foreseen under Article 5 of the Regulation (EU) 1143/2014 on the prevention and management of the introduction and spread of invasive alien species (IAS), is one step in the process of developing the list of IAS of Union concern. The aim of the current study is to develop such risk assessments alongside evidence on management measures and their implementation cost and cost-effectiveness to help inform policies and prioritise actions. This study includes eight new risk assessments and associated management annexes, for the following species: Bipalium kewense (Kew Flatworm), Cervus nippon (Sika Deer), Cherax destructor (Common Yabby), Delairea odorata (Cape Ivy), Marisa cornuarietis (Colombian Ramshorn Apple Snail), Mulinia lateralis (Dwarf Surf Clam), Obama nungara (Obama Flatworm), and Pycnonotus jocosus (Red-whiskered Bulbul). This study further includes ten risk assessments from previous contracts, revised according to the comments from the Scientific Forum and other stakeholders, concerning the following species: Asterias amurensis (North Pacific Seastar), Axis axis (Axis Deer), Broussonetia papyrifera (Paper Mulberry), Callinectes sapidus (Atlantic Blue Crab), Cortaderia selloana (Pampas Grass), Faxonius immunis (Calico Crayfish), Misgurnus anguillicaudatus (Oriental Weatherfish), Pycnonotus cafer (Red-vented Bulbul), Vespa mandarinia (Asian Giant Hornet), and Xenopus laevis (African Claed Frog). In addition, two risk assessments submitted by a Member State were revised in this contract: Castor canadensis (North American Beaver) and Celastrus orbiculatus (Staff-vine).

- Abstract
There are four steps in obtaining test data, each requiring planning and decision-making: assembling students, administering tests, scoring, and recording scores. In assembling students, two cautions are in order. First, for norm referenced tests, students in the treatment group should take the test at the same time of the year as the students in the norming sample. Second, high absenteeism, differences among test administrators, and in testing environments may significantly affect pretest-posttest scores. Publisher's manuals should be followed exactly to ensure consistency between treatment and comparison groups. From a research viewpoint, trained test administrators should be used rather than classroom teachers. Scoring decisions include selecting an answer form (machine-scorable booklets vs. answer sheets); selecting a scoring agent (school personnel, test publisher, or independent test scoring company); and costs of scoring and of extensive statistical analysis. Finally, when recording scores, data forms should be carefully proofread. All scores should be completely identified and arranged to facilitate analysis. Eleven suggestions for designing test results forms discuss page numbers, testing date, group identification, confidentiality, test name, use of one sheet, arrangement and format of names, identification numbers, number of entries, and arrangement of columns. - Abstract
This case study describes the vocational education system and job training programs, especially those funded through the Carl D. Perkins Vocational Education Act, in an unnamed metropolitan area of California. The data were collected as part of another larger national study of state and local response to the Perkins Act. Information was collected during a week of unstructured interviews with individuals in the community involved in some capacity with vocational education. The resulting data provides the basis for the overview of the vocational education system presented in this report. The report is organized into sections dealing with the following areas: (1) labor market composition; (2) state influences on local vocational education activities (covering state administration, education initiatives, economic initiatives); (3) elementary and secondary education jurisdictions (covering student characteristics, course offerings, regional occupational center programs); (4) postsecondary educational institutions; (5) proprietary and trade schools and community-based organizations; (6) employer-based training; (7) data requirements and availability; and (8) the disadvantaged and the employment and training system. - Abstract
This study examined the dynamics and outcomes of the selection procedures of Chapter 1 programs in order to provide information needed for program reauthorization. Of central concern was the reason for variation in the student and school selection characteristics across districts. As information was analyzed and compared for Chapter 1 and non-Chapter 1 students, the following policy implications emerged: (1) Chapter 1 participation should be reduced in districts with low poverty occurrences; (2) in districts with poverty levels above 25% more high poverty schools should be eligible; (3) the use of the high concentration of poverty option should be restricted to high poverty districts; (4) the selection measures for students within a district must be uniform; (5) uniform selection standards must be applied for students eligible for more than one program; (6) greater use should be made of the schoolwide project option plan; (7) districts with small concentrations of deprived students should reexamine their selection practices; and (8) districts should be permitted to continue targeting grade bands. Data are presented on 46 tables and one figure in this report. Six appendices contain additional statistics from the study. (VM)
