Cytochrome b5 reductase 3 (CYB5R3) is involved in various cellular metabolic processes, including fatty acid synthesis and drug metabolism. However, the role of CYB5R3 in cancer development remains poorly understood. Here, we show that CYB5R3 expression is downregulated in human lung cancer cell lines and tissues. Adenoviral overexpression of CYB5R3 suppresses lung cancer cell growth in vitro and in vivo. However, CYB5R3 deficiency promotes tumorigenesis and metastasis in mouse models. Transcriptome analysis revealed that apoptosis- and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-related genes are upregulated in CYB5R3-overexpressing lung cancer cells. Metabolomics analysis revealed that CYB5R3 overexpression increased the production of NAD+ and oxidized glutathione (GSSG). Ectopic CYB5R3 is mainly localized in the ER, where CYB5R3-dependent ER stress is induced by activating protein kinase RNA-like ER kinase (PERK) and inositol-requiring enzyme 1 alpha (IRE1α). Moreover, NAD+ activates poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase16 (PARP16), an ER-resident protein, to promote ADP-ribosylation of PERK and IRE1α and induce ER stress. In addition, CYB5R3 induces the generation of reactive oxygen species and caspase-9-dependent-intrinsic cell death. Our findings highlight the significance of CYB5R3 as a tumor suppressor for the development of CYB5R3-based therapeutics for lung cancer.

Erosive adenomatosis of the nipple (EAN), also known as nipple adenoma, florid papillomatosis, or papillary adenoma of the nipple, is a benign neoplasm originating from a lactiferous duct of the breast. Although the potential for malignant change is invariably negligible, the nature of the disease is quite intractable despite several treatment methods. Surgical excision is known as the treatment of choice, but this invasive approach is generally not acceptable to the vast majority of patients due to the cosmetic outcomes. Cryosurgery could be an alternative choice to preserve the structure of the nipple-areola complex, though its application has not been studied due to the paucity of cases. A 22-year-old female presented with a unilateral, crater-like erosion of the left nipple with serosanguineous discharge. The skin biopsy revealed proliferation of tubular structures, which corresponded to EAN. She was treated with 4 sessions of cryosurgery (open cryospray with liquid nitrogen) over 6 months, and the skin lesion resolved completely without any recurrence for 12 months. Although further study is required to determine the optimal treatment regimen for EAN, cryosurgery should be considered as an effective option to surgical excision.

Bacterial surface display system has been adopted in various biotechnological applications. In the case of Bacillus subtilis, most of the studies have been developed using spore based surface display system utilizing the inherent rigidity of spore against heat, alkali, and shear stress. But, spore harvest, purification and separation need additional cost and labor. To eliminate this procedure and to use the gram-positive nature of B. subtilis, YuaB, which is one of the major B. subtilis biofilm components and locates in the cell wall, based cell surface display system, is developed. P43 promoter driven overexpression of YuaB-His6 tag does not hamper bacterial cell growth and promoted biofilm formation of recombinant strain. Flow cytometry of recombinant strain and its protoplast using FITC-Anti His6 antibody, verified that YuaB locate in plasma membrane and protrude to the outside of cell wall, which means YuaB can be used as very efficient anchoring motif. Using surface expressed YuaB-His6 tag, removal of divalent metal ion, Cu2+ and Ni2+, was tried to test its possibility for the environmental application of developed system.

Cutaneous melanoma is known to be one of the most dangerous skin cancers because of its metastatic functions. Today, it is essential to investigate specific biomarkers for the target treatment in many diseases including cancers. DJ-1 protein, also known as Parkinson disease 7, has various functions associated with cancer progression including cell survival and migration. Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) is a tumor suppressor that regulates the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and its mutations have been reported to frequently occur in many cancers such as thyroid, breast and skin. Recently, DJ-1 has been identified as a negative regulator of PTEN in many human cancer cells. However, the impacts and relationship of DJ-1 and PTEN have not been studied yet in melanoma. To confirm the expression of DJ-1 and PTEN in melanoma compared to normal skin tissues and find out functions of DJ-1 in melanoma cells, Western blot analysis and immunohistochemical staining were used. Transfection of G361 cells with DJ-1-specific small interfering RNA was performed to figure out the roles of DJ-1 and the relationship between DJ-1 and PTEN in melanoma cells. In our study, the DJ-1 protein was significantly increased with loss of PTEN protein in melanoma compared to that in normal skin. Inhibition of DJ-1 in G361 cells induced apoptosis, and suppressed cell survival and migration. Furthermore, suppression of DJ-1 in G361 cells increased the expression of cleaved caspase-3, cleaved PARP, Bax, p53, and Daxx as well as PTEN, while it decreased expression of survivin, caspase-3, and PARP. Also, downregulated DJ-1 inhibited phosphorylation of AKT in G361 cells. Collectively, DJ-1 overexpression could affect the proliferative and invasive capabilities of melanoma cells via regulating the PTEN/AKT pathway and apoptosis-related proteins. This study suggests that DJ-1 may be a potential target for the treatment of melanoma.

Fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) laser has been used with conventional treatments for vitiligo, demonstrating more effectiveness compared with conventional treatments alone. Especially, fractional CO2 laser combined with narrow-band ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) was shown to induce more improvement compared with NB-UVB monotherapy for treating stable non-segmental vitiligo. However, the effectiveness of fractional CO2 laser plus NB-UVB for the treatment of non-segmental vitiligo remains controversial. Therefore, this study aimed to confirm the safety and efficacy of fractional CO2 laser combined with NB-UVB compared with NB-UVB monotherapy in stable non-segmental vitiligo. We searched the data from different databases, including Cochrane, Embase, and PubMed up to January 2020. Four randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for comparison between fractional CO2 laser plus NB-UVB and NB-UVB monotherapy in patients with stable non-segmental vitiligo were included. We performed meta-analyses for repigmentation improvement and patient satisfaction as well as subgroup analyses based on acral or non-acral vitiligo, according to the PRISMA guidelines. The combination treatment showed more superior results than NB-UVB monotherapy (≥ 75% repigmentation, RR 4.60, 95% CI 1.19–17.74; ≥ 50% repigmentation, RR 2.24, 95% CI 0.45–11.17

Streptomyces avermitilis MA4680 was used for the biotransformation of phloretin, one of the dihydrochalcone found in apple bark. After LC analysis, two main biotransformed products were identified and they were further analyzed using GC/MS. After BSTFA derivatization of biotransformed product, they were interpreted as regioselectively hydroxylated products of phloretin in Bring. Maximum conversion of phloretin was 6.7% with 1 h of reaction, and the phloretin and reaction products were completely metabolized after 3 h of reaction due to cellular metabolism. Addition of 0.5 mM quinidine completely blocked hydroxylation of phloretin, which means the hydroxylation proceed by P450 monoxygenase dependent metabolism. Addition of Brij 35 detergent resulted in 150% increase of hydroxylated product due to facilitating transport of phloretin and its reaction product across cellular membrane.

Tinea capitis is more common in children than in adults. Due to the low incidence of this condition among adults, it is frequently misdiagnosed as other scalp diseases, such as seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, and cellulitis. Herein, we describe an 82-year-old woman who presented with erythematous scaly patches and alopecia. Mycological examinations revealed tinea capitis caused by Microsporum canis. The patient was then successfully treated with antifungal medications.

BACKGROUND The dermoscopic patterns of acral melanocytic nevi (AMNs) are crucial in differentiating them from acral melanoma. Several studies have reported the dermoscopic patterns of acquired acral melanocytic nevi (AAMNs). However, few have investigated the dermoscopic patterns of congenital acral melanocytic nevi (CAMNs). OBJECTIVE To compare the clinical and dermoscopic features of CAMNs and AAMNs. METHODS The present study included 43 patients with CAMNs and 40 with AAMNs. We reviewed their medical records as well as their clinical and dermoscopic findings. RESULTS Congenital acral melanocytic nevis were more asymmetrical than AAMNs (P = 0.002) and presented more frequently as comma-shaped (P = 0.005). Regarding dermoscopic findings, globular pattern (55.8%) was the most common feature of CAMNs, while parallel furrow pattern (37.5%) was the most common feature of AAMNs. In this study, we expressed cotA laccase from Bacillus subtilis on the surface of B. subtilis spores for efficient decolorization of synthetic dyes. The cotE, cotG, and cotY genes were used as anchoring motifs for efficient spore surface display of cotA laccase. Moreover, a His6 tag was inserted at the C-terminal end of cotA for the immunological detection of the expressed fusion protein. Appropriate expression of the CotE-CotA (74 kDa), CotG-CotA (76 kDa), and CotY-CotA (73 kDa) fusion proteins was confirmed by western blot. We verified the surface expression of each fusion protein on B. subtilis spore by flow cytometry. The decoloration rates of Acid Green 25 (anthraquinone dye) for the recombinant DB104 (pSDJH-EA), DB104 (pSDJH-GA), DB104 (pSDJH-YA), and the control DB104 spores were 48.75%, 16.12%, 21.10%, and 9.96%, respectively. DB104 (pSDJH-EA) showed the highest decolorization of Acid Green 25 and was subsequently tested on other synthetic dyes with different structures. The decolorization rates of the DB104 (pSDJH-EA) spore for Acid Red 18 (azo dye) and indigo carmine (indigo dye) were 18.58% and 43.20%, respectively. The optimum temperature for the decolorization of Acid Green 25 by the DB104 (pSDJH-EA) spore was found to be 50°C. Upon treatment with known laccase inhibitors, including EDTA, SDS, and NaN3, the decolorization rate of Acid Green 25 by the DB104 (pSDJH-EA) spore decreased by 23%, 80%, and 36%, respectively.

Segmental nevus depigmentosus and segmental vitiligo can be difficult to differentiate from each other. Differential diagnosis of these two diseases is important because they have significantly different prognoses and psychological effects. The purpose of this study is to identify clinical clues that may be helpful in differentiating these two diseases. We enrolled 63 patients with segmental nevus depigmentosus and 149 patients with segmental vitiligo. Sex, age of onset, sites involved, dermatomal distribution, margin of lesion and presence of poliosis were evaluated in both groups. The age of onset was less than 10 years in 96.8% of segmental nevus depigmentosus and 28.9% of segmental vitiligo cases. Trunk (36.5%) and cervical (38.1%) dermatomes were the most commonly involved in segmental nevus depigmentosus and face (67.1%) and trigeminal (64.4%) dermatomes in segmental vitiligo. The average number of dermatomes involved in truncal lesions was different in segmental nevus depigmentosus and segmental vitiligo (2.71 vs 1.62, P = 0.001). Segmental vitiligo on the face, neck and trunk appeared closer to the axis than segmental nevus depigmentosus (P < 0.001). Segmental nevus depigmentosus and segmental vitiligo showed significantly different margins (90.5% and 41.6% serrated, respectively; P < 0.001). We observed clinical differences between patients with segmental nevus depigmentosus and those with segmental vitiligo. Distribution (site, distance to axis, dermatome), vertical width, margin of lesion and presence of poliosis can be helpful in differentiating segmental nevus depigmentosus and segmental vitiligo.

In this paper, we report removing heavy metal using Bacillus subtilis spore surface display system. We used CotE protein as an anchoring motif because of its high abundance and location in the outer coat layer. And we inserted His12 (double histidine 6 tag) at the C-terminal end of anchoring motif. The proper expression of CotE-His12 fusion protein (22.8 kDa) was confirmed by western blot. We confirmed the surface expression of the CotE-His12 fusion protein using flow cytometry. We tried Ni2+ and Cd2+ adsorption with recombinant spore DB104 (pCotE-His12) and DB104 spore. The amount of adsorbed Ni2+ was 18.2 nmol/mg for DB104 spore and 82.4 nmol/mg for DB104 (pCotE-His12) spore. In the case of Cd2+, the adsorbed amount was 32.6 nmol/mg for DB104 spore and 79.1 nmol/mg for DB104 (pCotE-His12) spore. This means that our spore displayed His12 system can be generally applied for the removal of various kind of heavy metals in the field.

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a self-limited cutaneous viral infection. Topical 10% potassium hydroxide (KOH) has been used for treating MC. However, it remains unclear whether it is beneficial or not to apply topical 10% KOH for treating MC.To confirm the efficacy and safety of topical 10% KOH compared with placebo as well as other treatments for MC, meta-analysis was used. Up to September 2020, we performed a comprehensive search of literature based on three databases with following keywords including 'molluscum contagiosum' and 'potassium hydroxide'.Our meta-analyses demonstrated a significant difference between topical 10% KOH and placebo for complete clearance of MC (RR: 2.96, 95% CI: 1.69 - 5.17,We demonstrate that application of topical 10% KOH may be one of effective and appropriate methods for the treatment of MC compared with awaiting spontaneous resolution due to its safety and effectiveness.

BACKGROUND Acne vulgaris is a common skin disease primarily affecting young adults. Given that the internet has become a major source of health information, especially among the young, the internet is a powerful tool of communication and has a significant influence on patients. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to clarify the features of patients’ interest in and evaluate the quality of information about acne vulgaris on the internet. METHODS We compared the search volumes on acne vulgaris with those of other dermatological diseases using Google Trends from January 2004 to August 2019. We also determined the search volumes for relevant keywords of acne vulgaris on Google and Naver and evaluated the quality of answers to the queries in KnowledgeiN. RESULTS The regression analysis of Google Trends data demonstrated that the patients’ interest in acne vulgaris was higher than that for other dermatological diseases, such as atopic dermatitis (β=−20.33, 95% CI –22.27 to –18.39, PPPP=.018) and on weekends than on weekdays (β=–6.68, 95% CI –13.18 to –0.18, P=.044). The most frequently searched relevant keywords with “acne vulgaris” and “cause” were “stress,” “food,” and “cosmetics.” Among food, the 2 highest acne vulgaris–related keywords were milk and wheat in Naver and coffee and ramen in Google. The queries in Naver KnowledgeiN were mostly answered by a Korean traditional medicine doctor (53.4%) or the public (33.6%), but only 12.0% by dermatologists. CONCLUSIONS Physicians should be aware of patients’ interest in and beliefs about acne vulgaris to provide the best patient education and care, both online and in the clinic.

Fanconi syndrome is a dysfunction of the proximal renal tubules that results in impaired reabsorption and increased urinary loss of phosphate and other solutes. The pathophysiology of drug-induced Fanconi syndrome is unclear. Here we report the case of a 36-year-old woman who presented with pain in multiple bones and proteinuria. She had a 7-year history of taking adefovir at 10 mg/day for chronic hepatitis B. Three years previously she had received surgery for a nontraumatic right femur neck fracture, after which she continued to complain of pain in multiple bones, and proteinuria, glycosuria, and phosphaturia were noted. The findings of a light-microscope examination of a renal biopsy sample were normal, but mitochondrial damage of the proximal tubules was evident in electron microscopy. Western blot analysis revealed that the level of serum fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) was lower than in normal controls. After 2 months of treatment, hypophosphatemia and proximal tubular dysfunction were reversed, and serum FGF23 had normalized. This case suggests that direct mitochondrial damage in proximal tubules can cause drug-induced Fanconi syndrome associated with osteomalacia.

Keywords: Pemphigus vulgaris;Modified Regimen;Rituximab biosimilar; IVIG Pemphigus Vulgaris (PV) has been known as fatal autoimmune bullous diseases affecting the skin and mucous membranes. Here, we report that a patient with PV responded rapidly to a modified regimen of rituximab biosimilar (CT-10, Truxima®)combined with Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG). A 53-year-old man presented with extensive erosions due to blistering on the whole body following initial mucosal erosions which started at 3 years ago. Laboratory tests revealed an eosinophil count of 16.7% (normal range: 0~5%) with normal liver and renal functions. Antinuclear antibody was a nuclear membrane pattern with a titer of 1:40. Anti-dsDNA, anti-Ro/La, anti-Scl-70, and anti-phospholipid antibodies were negative. Myeloperoxidase and PR3 antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody were both negative. Histological examination showed suprabasala cantholysis, while direct and indirect immunofluorescence assays demonstrated a deposition of immunoglobulin G (IgG) on anintercellular surface at 1:640 dilutions (Figure. 1a, b). Based on the blistering on the whole body and characteristic biopsy result, the patient was diagnosed as PV. Although he was initially treated with topical and highdose methylprednisolone (1000 mg/day) pulse therapy for 3 consecutive days, there was no significant improvement in skin blistering lesions. We decided to administer CT-P10 combined with IVIG. We treated the patient with CT-P10 (500, 500, and 1000mg once weekly for 3 weeks) combined with IVIG (1g/ kg at first and third week). During the treatment of CT-P10 combined with IVIG, a clinical response rapidly appeared, and levels of antibodies were decreased from 1:640 to 1:40 (Figure. 1c). Disease activity was dramatically controlled within 3 weeks. It achieved the end of the consolidation phase for PV within 5 weeks after starting CT-P10 combined with IVIG (Figure. 1dg). Then, we tapered oral prednisolone and steroid-sparing agents including mycophenolate mofetil and cyclosporine for maintenance therapy. Until now, there has been no recurrence of PV on 36 months follow up.

BACKGROUND Pathologic scars can lead to itching, erythema, and psychological stress due to cosmetic problems. Bleomycin, one of anticancer agents, has been used for treating keloid or hypertrophic scar. Some studies have shown that bleomycin can induce markedly scar improvement. AIMS To evaluate the efficacy of bleomycin compared to corticosteroid as well as other treatments for keloid or hypertrophic scar using meta-analysis methods. METHODS A computerized search was performed in different databases including Cochrane, Embase, and PubMed. Three randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and two controlled clinical trials (CCTs) were included. Then, statistical analyses of extracted outcome data from the studies were calculated using Rex (version 3.0.1; RexSoft Inc). Purpose We investigated the expression of Nrf2 in colorectal cancer and its correlation with clinicopathological characteristics as well as mechanisms and roles of Nrf2 expression including cell signaling pathway, survival, proliferation, and migration. Methods Nrf2 expression was measured in 12 and 30 different colorectal cancer (CRC) tissues by western blot (WB) and immunohistochemistry (IHC), respectively. SW480 cells were used for cell proliferation and cell migration tests. The correlation between the expression of Nrf2 and clinicopathologic parameters were evaluated using the chi-square or Fisher exact test. Data are expressed as the mean ± standard deviation for 3 independent experiments. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Analysis of WB demonstrated that Nrf2 proteins were increased in CRC tissues, and decreased in normal tissues. IHC staining showed that the Nrf2 expression was elevated in CRC tissues, compared to matched normal tissues. When SW480 cells were suppressed with small interfering RNA of Nrf2, cell viability was inhibited, and cell apoptosis was increased. These results were found along with suppression of the phosphorylated form of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 and AKT. Conclusion This study suggests that overexpression of Nrf2 may be related to carcinogenesis and progression of CRC.

Tyrosinases, copper-containing monooxygenases, are widely used enzymes for industrial, medical, and environmental applications. We report the first functional surface display of Bacillus megaterium tyrosinase on Bacillus subtilis spores using CotE as an anchor protein. Flow Cytometry was used to verify surface expression of tyrosinase on the purified spores. Moreover, tyrosinase activity of the displayed enzyme on B. subtilis spores was monitored in the presence of L-tyrosine (substrate) and CuSO4 (inducer). The stability of the spore-displayed tyrosinase was then evaluated after 15 days maintenance of the spores at room temperature, and no significant decrease in the enzyme activity was observed. In addition, the tyrosinase-expressing spores could be repeatedly used with 62% retained enzymatic activity after six times washing with Tris-HCl buffer. This genetically immobilized tyrosinase on the spores would make a new advance in industrial, medical, and environmental applications.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) is associated with cancer progression in different cancers, including melanoma. It also affects specificity protein (Sp1), a transcription factor. Flavonoid morin is known to inhibit growth of cancer cells, including lung cancer and breast cancer. Herein, we hypothesized that morin can inhibit cancer activities in melanoma by altering ROS generation. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of morin and its underlying mechanisms in melanoma cells. Effects of morin on cell proliferation and apoptosis were determined using standardized assays. Changes in pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic proteins were analyzed by western blot analysis. Cellular ROS levels and mitochondrial function were evaluated by measuring DCF-DA fluorescence and rhodamine-123 fluorescence intensities, respectively. Morin induced ROS production and apoptosis, as presented by increased proportion of cells with Annexin V-PE(+) staining and sub-G0/G1 peak in cell cycle analysis. It also downregulated Sp1, Mcl-1, Bcl-2, and caspase-3 but upregulated cleaved caspase-3, Bax, and PUMA. In immunohistochemical staining, Sp1 was overexpressed in melanoma tissues compared to normal skin tissues. Collectively, our data suggest that morin can induce apoptosis of melanoma cells by regulating pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic proteins through ROS, and may be a potential substance for treatment of melanoma.

Finasteride 1 mg is considered to be the standard treatment method for male androgenetic alopecia (AGA). However, there have only been a few studies investigating its long‐term efficacy. Moreover, its effect on various types of AGA remains unknown. In this study, the authors investigated the 5‐year efficacy of finasteride 1 mg in Korean men with AGA and analyzed the changes in hair growth according to the distribution of hair loss. The medical records of male AGA patients who were treated with oral finasteride for a period of at least 5 years at two university hospitals were retrospectively reviewed. Patients' photographs were evaluated using the basic and specific (BASP) classification and investigator's global assessment. Of the total 126 patients, 108 (85.7%) showed improvement after 5 years of treatment. According to the BASP classification, hair loss of the anterior hair line (basic type), vertex (V type), and frontal area (F type) was improved in 44.4%, 89.7% and 61.2% of patients, respectively. The V type showed a more rapid and steady improvement compared with the other types. Progression of alopecia after peak improvement was seen in 10.3% of cases of the V type, 16.2% of the F type and 0% of the basic type. In conclusion, finasteride 1 mg showed a sustainable effect for at least 5 years in Korean male AGA patients. The exact time points showing signs of first clinical improvement and sustainability were different depending on the type of alopecia.

Background Dermoscopy is a useful tool for the diagnosis of acral melanomas (AMs). However, little is known about the influence of tumor thickness on the dermoscopic findings of AM. Objective To investigate the affect Breslow thickness (BT) has on the dermoscopic patterns of AM. Methods Data on cases of AM on the glabrous skin were collected from 4 university hospitals. We investigated the frequency of each dermoscopic feature of AM according to the BT. Statistical analysis was performed to investigate the association between the specific dermoscopic patterns and BT. Results Multivariable analysis revealed that the colors red (odds ratio [OR] 16.482, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.605-99.016); blue (OR 7.092; 95% CI 1.707-37.435); and white (OR 5.048, 95% CI 1.152-22.897) were more common in AM with BT >2 mm than those with BT ≤2 mm. Regarding patterns, atypical vascular (OR 34.589, 95% CI 6.458-305.852); blue-white veils (OR 9.605, 95% CI 1.971-72.062); and ulcers (OR 5.084, 95% CI 1.145-24.152) were more frequently detected in cases with BT >2 mm than those with BT ≤2 mm. Limitations A retrospective study design and small sample size. Conclusion This study showed an association between dermoscopic patterns and tumor thickness among patients with AM. Dermoscopy can be a useful adjuvant tool for predicting BT in AM.

The aim of this study was to evaluate Kinesio Taping can improve muscle activity, joint angle, gait ability in patients with stroke suffering foot drop. Total 25 patients were selected as subjects of this study and were divided into two groups. Experimental group participated in the Kinesio Taping on ankle joint with treadmill walking, while control group wore AFO on ankle joint with treadmill walking for 4 weeks, 30 minutes per session, three times per week. In two groups, muscle activity was measured using the EMG, joint angle was measured using the Dartfish program, and gait ability was measured using the 10meter walking test before training and after 4-week training. Experiment group showed a statistically significant improvement muscle activity, joint angle, gait ability compared to control group in 4 week. Application of Kinesio taping has a more positive effect on the muscle activity, joint angle, gait ability than AFO of the patients with stroke suffering foot drop.

Black mini tomato ‘Hei-G’ fruits were harvested at different stages of maturity (immature-mature green and mature-black red) and stored at different temperatures (8, 12, and 20℃) to investigate the quality and lycopene content during storage. Weight loss increased dramatically at higher temperature for both harvesting stages without significant differences. Firmness of immature fruits decreased below the initial level of mature fruit (8.1N) after 5, 8, and 19 days storage, when they were stored at 20, 12, and 8℃, respectively. Soluble solid contents of mature fruit increased at initial storage, and were higher as compared to immature fruits before deterioration at each storage temperature. Decrease in titratable acid of mature fruits depended on storage time and temperature. However, titratable acid of immature fruits showed little change during storage, and so it did not affect flavor. Hunter a value changed greatly in immature fruit stored at high temperature. Unlike ripe tomatoes, there was no significant difference in black tomato Hunter b values of immature and mature fruit at initial and 12 days storage. However, immature fruits stored at 8℃ did not reach full maturity and color development and ripening. High storage temperature increased lycopene production while low storage temperature blocked lycopene development. Shelf life of the immature fruits, which was evaluated by elapsed days to conventional mature stage, was 12 and 15 days when they were stored at 20 and 12℃, respectively. The optimum storage temperature to maintain the quality and lycopene content of mature fruits was 12℃. Moreover, the shelf life of mature fruits stored at 20℃ could reach up to 5 days.

This study focused on a quantitative substance flow analysis (SFA) of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in plastics from obsolete TVs and computer monitors that often contain large amounts of the flame retardants. According to the results of the static SFA study, 1.87 tons and 0.28 tons of PBDEs from newly manufactured TVs and computer monitors were introduced into households in 2011 in Korea, respectively. There were approximately 924 tons and 90.3 tons of PBDEs present in TVs and computer monitors in households during product use, respectively. The results of the dynamic SFA study indicated that in 2017 the amount of PBDEs from TVs and computer monitors in the recycling stage is expected to be 2.63 tons and 0.1 tons, respectively. Large fractions of PBDEs from used TVs are present in recycled plastics, while PBDE-containing computer monitors are exported to Southeast Asian countries. This research indicates that PBDEs were emitted the most from recycled plastic pellet processes upon recycling. Further study may be warranted to focus the flow of PBDEs in recycled plastic products in order to determine the final destination and disposal of these chemicals in the environment.

In advanced countries, a variety of consumer exposure assessment models including CONSEXPO,are developed to manage risks of consumer products containing hazardous materials. The models are used toassess the risks of exposure to hazardous chemicals in consumer products, which serves as a foundation forregulation standards. In this study, exposure assessment models applicable for various scenarios were reviewedand a proper model was applied for the selected products and risk assessment was conducted at each stageto establish a risk assessment procedure for different types of products. Based on the exposure scenario, exposurefactor was selected and according to the algorithm produced based on CONSEXPO exposure model, somelevel of phthalates were detected from some types of PVC flooring. However, a correlation between phthalatecontent and migration rate showed r-square 0.0065, little correlation, which is inadequate for estimating standardvalue. For this reason, it seems valid that the current standard be in place. Additionally, any new standard wasnot suggested as VOCs were not found harmful to human health, allowing the existing standard to becontinuously applied. No migration rate was found for heavy metals and risk assessment was not performedaccordingly. In this study, heavy metals, PCDD/PCDFs, PAHs in wastes generated from thermal processes were analyzed. Waste from lead thermal metalurgy (EWC 10 04) inorganic metal substances in the regulation were detected in the highest concentrations of Pb. EWC 10 04 seems to be a result of the dust. Waste from zinc thermal metalurgy (EWC 10 05) inorganic metal substances in the regulation were detected in high concentration of Zn. EWC 10 05 seems to be a result of the dust. Waste from copper thermal metalurgy (EWC 10 06) Cu in the 651,77 mg/kg to 651 times higher than regulation standard appeared in the copper thermal metallurgy process seems to be a result of dust. The concentrations of PCDD/PCDFs ranged from 0.0005~11.748 ng-TEQ/ g in dust, 0.0027 ng-TEQ/g in fly ash. PCDD/PCDFs content was not detected in excessive value in regulation

Hydrofluoric acid (HF), a typical inorganic acid, has been used in the industry for its various usageand classified as the toxic compound, because it can cause the pneumonia and pulmonary edema when it wasexposed to respiratory organs. The official environmental analytical method for fluorine and its compound inwaste has not been developed. For this reason, we have faced some problem to treat the contaminated wastesby the HF leakage from industrial process. In this study, prepared for analytical method for combustible waste(crop, trees, etc.) generated from HF leaking accident and to be applied as the official analytical method forfluorine contaminated waste when the fluorine and its compound will be regulated as a hazardous materialby the waste management law later.요약: 불화수소는 유리의 식각, 금속의 녹 제거 등 산업계에서 많이 사용되는 대표적인 무기산이며 노출 시 눈, 코, 목안을 강하게 자극하고, 흡입 시 폐렴, 폐수종 기관지염을 일으키는 대표적인 유독물질에해당하는 화학물질로 구분되어 있다. 현행 폐기물공정시험기준에는 불소화합물에 대한 함량분석방법이마련되어 있지 않아 최근 발생된 불화수소 누출사고로 발생된 불산에 오염된 농작물, 수목 등 가연성 폐기물의 신속하고 안전한 처리방법 마련에 어려움을 겪었다. 본 연구에서는 불화수소 누출사고로 발생된가연성 폐기물(농작물, 수목 등) 중 불소 및 불소화합물의 함량분석방법 마련을 통해 폐기물의 불산 오염여부를 판단하고 적절한 폐기물 처리방법을 제시하고, 향후 이 방법을 폐기물 관리법상에 지정폐기물에 함유된 유해물질로 불소 및 불소화합물에 대한 항목 추가 시 폐기물공정시험기준으로 활용하고자 한다.Key words: Hydrofluoric acid (HF), leaking accident, combustible waste, analytical method

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in function and balance after Kinesio Taping application in stroke patients. [Subjects and Methods] Thirty subjects were randomly divided into an experimental group and control group. The experimental group was applied taping before therapeutic exercise, and the control group received only therapeutic exercise. Functional gait was measured using the straight line walking test, and dynamic balance ability was measured using the Berg Balance Scale. Walking velocity was measured with the 10 m walking test. [Results] There were statistically significant differences between the results of the straight line walking and 10 m walking tests in the pre-post analysis for the experimental group. There were a statistically significant difference in the Berg Balance Scale and 10 m walking test between the two groups. [Conclusion] Application of taping to the paralyzed parts of a stroke patient has a positive effect on improvement of typical asymmetric gait and walking speed.

This study was performed to investigate the contents characteristics of hazardous oil wastes and wastesof liquid fuels from different industrial process. In order to establish a hazardous waste list, samples of variousindustrial discharge have been analyzed for 16 non-regulated inorganic hazardous substances (i.e., Cu, Pb, Cd,CN, Hg, As, T-Cr, Cr 6+ , Sb, Ni, F, V, Ba, Zn, Be, Se). In more detail, hazardous waste samples includingwaste hydraulic oils, waste engine, gear and lubricating oils, waste insulating and heat transmission oils, bilgeoils, oil/water separator contents processing were collected from 37 workplaces and analyzed. We observedthat the most of the inorganic substances exceeded the proposed criteria in many samples. Especially theconcentration of Sb in heat transmission oil, bilge oil and gear & lubricating oils were ranged from 6 to 419mg/kg whereas the proposed criteria is 50 mg/kg. The assessment result of hazardous waste in Korea accordingto the EWC showed that the out of 24 processes, 16 belongs to absolute entry and 8 belongs to mirror entry.In conclusion, we expect the outcome of this study to align the classification system of hazardous wastemanagement in South Korea with international legislations, and consequently contribute to reduce environmentalpollution as well as health risks by toxic wastes.요약: 국내 유해폐기물의 적정 관리를 위해 폐유 및 액상연료 공정에서 발생한 폐기물 중 규제 무기물질류의 배출특성을 조사하였다. 사업장은 올바로시스템에 등록된 폐기물 배출업체를 대상으로, 유럽폐기물 분류체계(EWC, European Waste Catalogue)의 폐유 및 액상연료 공정(EWC 13)과 유사한 폐기물 발생업체를 선정하였다. 조사대상 사업장 37 개 업체를 현지 방문하여 원료, 생산제품, 생산 공정, 폐기물의 종류 및 배출과정을 조사하고 생산 공정에서 배출되는 51 개의 폐기물을 채취하여 무기물질류 16 항목(Cd, Pb, Cu, Hg, As, CN, Cr, Cr

This study was conducted to evaluate imported tomato F 1 cultivars as breeding materials for the resistance to Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) by molecular markers and bioassay. From marker genotyping and disease evaluation of 40 F 1 cultivars, most of the cultivars declared as TYLCV-resistance carried heterozygous marker genotype for the TYLCV resistance genes Ty-1 , Ty-3 , or Ty-3a , and showed low disease rates. Whereas, 4 of 5 F 1 cultivars declared as intermediate resistance showed marker genotype for susceptibility and disease rates ranged 18.1-33.3%. However, the xx cultivars showed inconsistency in marker genotype and disease rate. Characterization of horticultural traits of the F 1 cultivars with TYLCV-resistance indicated that large-size fruit cultivars were higher in yield and similar in sugar contents and solid-acid ratio compared to a control cultivar preferred in the domestic market, although hardness remained to be a problem. On the other hand, cherry tomato cultivars showed lower yield and brix, but longer internode compared to a control cultivar, indicating that breeding for TYLCV-resistance using these cultivars will require more efforts and time compared to large-sized.

This study has been conducted to provide a management plan for recycled products (plastic wastes) by identifying hazardous substances present in it and conducting exposure assessment. The concentration of 7 heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Pb, Zn) was analyzed. Exposure scenario was assumed by the consumption of kimchi made in a recycled plastic bucket. According to the analysis, all of the analyzed samples were within the food code standard level except one sample (137.03 mg/kg, sum of Cd, , Pb and Hg). In leaching test, all of heavy metals were within the leaching standard (Standards specifications of utensil and container-Packing). In an oral exposure test, Fe, Pb and Zn were detected in cabbages and were below PMTDI (Provisional Maximum Tolerable Daily Intake). As one of the recycled plastic buckets exceeded the standard level, we conclude not to recommend the recycled plastic buckets for cooking purpose.
