Search

UV Psc is a typical RS CVn type system undergoing dynamic chromosphere activity. We performed photometric observations of the system in 2015 and secured new BVR light curves showing well-defined photometric waves. In this paper, we analyzed the light curves using Wilson-Devinney binary code and investigated the orbital period of the system. The combination of our light curve synthesis with the spectroscopic solution developed by previous investigators yielded the absolute parameters as: M1 = 1.104 ± 0.042 Mⵙ, R1 = 1.165 ± 0.025 Rⵙ, and L1 = 1.361 ± 0.041 Lⵙ for the primary star, and M2 = 0.809 ± 0.082 Mⵙ, R2 = 0.858 ± 0.018 Rⵙ, and L2 = 0.339 ± 0.010 Lⵙ for the secondary star. The eclipse timing diagram for accurate CCD and photoelectric timings showed that the orbital period may vary either in a downward parabolic manner or a quasi-sinusoidal pattern. If the latter is adopted as a probable pattern for the period change, a more plausible account for the cyclic variation may be the light time effect caused by a circumbinary object rather than an Applegate-mechanism occurring via variable surface magnetic field strengths.

New observations for the times of minimum lights of a well-known apsidal motion star CW Cephei were made using a 0.6 m wide field telescope at Jincheon station of Chungbuk National University Observatory, Korea during the 2015 observational season. We determined new times of minimum lights from these observations and analyzed O-C diagrams together with collected times of minima to study both the apsidal motion and the Light Time Effect (LTE) suggested in the system. The new periods of the apsidal motion and the LTE were calculated as 46.6 and 39.3 years, respectively, which were similar but improved accuracy than earlier ones investigated by Han et al. (2002), Erdem et al. (2004) and Wolf et al. (2006).

We have carried out photometric follow-up observations of bright transiting extrasolar planets using the CbNUOJ 0.6 m telescope. We have tested the possibility of obtaining high photometric precision by applying the telescope defocus technique, allowing the use of several hundred seconds in exposure time for a single measurement. We demonstrate that this technique is capable of obtaining a root-mean-square scatter of sub-millimagnitude order over several hours for a V ~10 host star, typical for transiting planets detected from ground-based survey facilities. We compared our results with transit observations from a telescope operated in in-focus mode. High photometric precision was obtained due to the collection of a larger amount of photons, resulting in a higher signal compared to other random and systematic noise sources. Accurate telescope tracking is likely to further contribute to lowering systematic noise by exposing the same pixels on the CCD. Furthermore, a longer exposure time helps reduce the effect of scintillation noise which otherwise has a significant effect for small-aperture telescopes operated in in-focus mode. Finally we present the results of modelling four light-curves in which a root-mean-square scatter of 0.70 to 2.3 milli-magnitudes was achieved.

Astronomical Observations at Chungbuk National University Observatory (CBNUO) with an 1 m telescope have begun since April 2008, and Near-Earth Space Survey observations also have been started since November 2010, with a 0.6 m wide field telescope developed by Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute. To improve observational efficiency, we developed a weather monitoring system enabling automatic monitoring for the weather conditions and checking the status of the observational circumstances, such as dome status. We hope this weather monitoring system can be helpful to more than 100 Korean domestic observatories, including public outreach facilities. In this paper, we present the statistic analysis of the weather conditions collected at CBNUO for 3 years (2009- 2011) and comparisons were made for clear nights between using only humidity data and both humidity and cloud data.

We have designed a 30 cm cryogenic space infrared telescope for astronomical observation. The telescope is designed to observe in the wavelength range of 0.5~2.1 μm, when it is cooled down to 77 K. The result of the preliminary design of the support structure and support method of the mirror of a 30 cm cryogenic space infrared telescope is shown in this paper. As a Cassegrain prescription, the optical system of a 30 cm cryogenic space infrared telescope has a focal ratio of f/3.1 with a 300 mm primary mirror (M-1) and 113 mm secondary mirror (M-2). The material of the whole structure including mirrors is aluminum alloy (Al6061-T6). Flexures that can withstand random vibration were designed, and it was validated through opto-mechanical analysis that both primary and secondary mirrors, which are assembled in the support structure, meet the requirement of root mean square wavefront error

We conducted thermal analyses and cooling tests of the space observation camera (SOC) of the multi-purpose infrared imaging system (MIRIS) to verify passive cooling. The thermal analyses were conducted with NX 7.0 TMG for two cases of attitude of the MIRIS: for the worst hot case and normal case. Through the thermal analyses of the flight model, it was found that even in the worst case the telescope could be cooled to less than 206°K. This is similar to the results of the passive cooling test (~200.2°K). For the normal attitude case of the analysis, on the other hand, the SOC telescope was cooled to about 160°K in 10 days. Based on the results of these analyses and the test, it was determined that the telescope of the MIRIS SOC could be successfully cooled to below 200°K with passive cooling. The SOC is, therefore, expected to have optimal performance under cooled conditions in orbit.

We have designed and manufactured the Earth observation camera (EOC) of multi-purpose infrared imaging system (MIRIS). MIRIS is a main payload of the STSAT-3, which will be launched in late 2012. The main objective of the EOC is to test the operation of Korean IR technology in space, so we have designed the optical and mechanical system of the EOC to fit the IR detector system. We have assembled the flight model (FM) of EOC and performed environment tests successfully. The EOC is now ready to be integrated into the satellite system waiting for operation in space, as planned.

Optical observation system provides angle-only measurement for orbit determination of space object. Range measurement can be directly acquired using laser ranging or tone ranging system. Initial orbit determination (IOD) by using angle- only data set shows discrepancy according to the measurement time interval. To solve this problem, range measurement data should be added for IOD. In this study, two-site optical observation was used to derive the range information. We have observed nine geostationary earth orbit satellites by using two-site optical observation system. The determination result of the range shows the accuracy over 99.5% compared to the results from the satellite tool kit simulation. And we confirmed that the orbit determination by the Herrick-Gibbs method with the range information obtained from the two-site observation is more accurate than the orbit determination by Gauss method with the one-site observation. For more accurate two-site optical observation, a baseline should satisfy an optimal condition of length and more precise observation system needed.

Many filtered CCD measures form the basis of six new light curves of the eclipsing system SW Lyn. From these measures and additional observations for eclipse timing, 47 new times of minimum light over the time-interval of about 13 years have been calculated. The complex period variability can be sorted into a linear period improvement with 5.8-year and 33.9-year periodic terms. The shorter cyclic term of these is ascribed to a cool companion of the eclipsing pair but the longer one has no testable interpretation at present. The new light curves are synthesized by the 2003 version of the Wilson-Devinney differential corrections computer code. The results incorporate a source of "third light" which comes from the cool companion star that had been identified by the cycling of the period of the eclipsing pair and also had previously been identified spectroscopically. There is a measure of satisfaction with current understanding of the SW Lyn eclipsing system because of consistent syntheses of all historical light curves. This agreeable convergence, however, comes partly at the expense of an unanticipated temperature of the hot star and of a photospheric spot that has no obvious basis in the detached character modeled for the binary. We offer predictions of changes in the stellar parameters if the modeled detached-configuration should be wrong. The SW Lyn stellar system is still difficult to understand.

We modified the optical system of 500 mm wide-field telescope of which point spread function showed an irregularity. The telescope has been operated for Near Earth Space Survey (NESS) located at Siding Spring Observatory (SSO) in Australia, and the optical system was brought back to Korea in January 2008. After performing a numerical simulation with the tested value of surface figure error of the primary mirror using optical design program, we found that the surface figure error of the mirror should be fabricated less than root mean square (RMS) λ/10 in order to obtain a stellar full width at half maximum (FWHM) below 28 μm. However, we started to figure the mirror for the target value of RMS λ/20, because system surface figure error would be increased by the error induced by the optical axis adjustment, mirror cell installation, and others. The radius of curvature of the primary mirror was 1,946 mm after the correction. Its measured surface figure error was less than RMS λ/20 on the table of polishing machine, and RMS λ/15 after installation in the primary mirror cell. A test observation performed at Daeduk Observatory at Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute by utilizing the exiting mount, and resulted in 39.8 μm of stellar FWHM. It was larger than the value from numerical simulation, and showed wing-shaped stellar image. It turned out that the measured-curvature of the secondary mirror, 1,820 mm, was not the same as the designed one, 1,795.977 mm. We fabricated the secondary mirror to the designed value, and finally obtained a stellar FWHM of 27 μm after re-installation of the optical system into SSO NESS Observatory in Australia.

We present light curves of a short period binary system BL Eridani. The light curves were observed with {it VRI} filters by a 50cm wide field robotic telescope at Siding Spring Observatory (SSO), equipped with a 2K CCD camera, which was developed by Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), and Yonsei University Observatory (YUO). The photometric observations were made on 6 nights by automatic operation mode and remote observation mode at SSO and KASI in Korea, respectively. We obtained new {it VRI} CCD light curves and new 5 times of minima, and analyzed the light curves with the Wilson & Deviney (1971) binary 2005 version and derived the new photometric solutions. The mass ratio q = 0.48 in this study shows different value with earlier investigators. According to the model analysis, it is considered that the BL Eri system is currently undergoing contact stage of the two binary components, rather than near-contact stage.

Web camera is usually used for video communication between PC, it has small sensing area, cannot using long exposure application, so that is insufficient for astronomical application. But web camera is suitable for bright planet, moon, it doesn't need long exposure time. So many amateur astronomer using web camera for planetary imaging. We used ToUcam manufactured by Phillips for planetary imaging and Registax commercial program for a video file combining. And then, we are measure a property of web camera, such as linearity, gain that is usually using for analysis of CCD performance. Because of using combine technic selected high quality image from video frame, this method can take higher resolution planetary imaging than one shot image by film, digital camera and CCD. We describe a planetary observing method and a video frame combine method.

We developed and compared two automatic algorithms for moving object detections in the YSTAR-NEOPAT sky survey program. One method, called starlist comparison method, is to identify moving object candidates by comparing the photometry data tables from successive images. Another method, called image subtraction method, is to identify the candidates by subtracting one image from another which isolates sources moving against background stars. The efficiency and accuracy of these algorithms have been tested using actual survey data from the YSTAR-NEOPAT telescope system. For the detected candidates, we performed eyeball inspection of animated images to confirm validity of asteroid detections. Main conclusions include followings. First, the optical distortion in the YSTAR-NEOPAT wide-field images can be properly corrected by comparison with USNO-B1.0 catalog and the astrometric accuracy can be preserved at around 1.5 arcsec. Secondly, image subtraction provides more robust and accurate detection of moving objects. For two different thresholds of 2.0 and 4.0σ, image subtraction method uncovered 34 and 12 candidates and most of them are confirmed to be real. Starlist comparison method detected many more candidates, 60 and 6 for each threshold level, but nearly half of them turned out to be false detections.

We performed CCD photometric observations of the W-type contact binary AB And for 10 nights from November 1995 to December 1999 using the 61-cm reflector and BVR filters at Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory. From our observations, the seasonal light curves of AB And for 1995, 1996 and 1999 were completed and 8 new times of minimum light were determined. Newly obtained light curves show that strong light variations occurred in AB And during the past five years. We adopted the 1996 light curves as reference ones and obtained the photometric solutions of them with contact mode in the Wilson-Devinney binary code. Assuming such light variations were produced by the existence of a star spot (or star spots) in the analysis, we derived the system parameters and analyzed the 1995 and 1999 light curves by adjusting only the spot parameters. As the results, we interpreted that those light variations are produced by the simultaneous existence of a hot spot and a cool spot on the secondary. We could infer that the hot spot on the secondary is produced due to mass exchange between the components suggested by Lee (1999).

The electron density and temperature in the topside ionosphere are observed by the Ionosphere Measurement Sensor (IMS) onboard the KOMPSAT-1, which has the sun-synchronous orbit of the altitude of 685 km and the orbital inclination of 98deg with a descending node at 22:50LT. Observations have been analyzed to determine the seasonal variations of the electron density and temperature in the low-latitude region. Only the night-time (22:50LT) behavior on magnetically quiet days (Kp < 4) has been examined. Observations show a strong longitudinal and seasonal variation. Generally, in the dip equator the density increases and the temperature decreases. In equinox the latitudinal distributions of the electron density and temperature are quite symmetric about the dip equator. However, the local maximum of the density and the local minimum of the temperature shift toward the Northern hemisphere in summer solstice but the Southern hemisphere in winter solstice. Such variations are due to the influences of field-aligned plasma transport induced by F region neutral wind. Compared with the IRI95 model, the observed electron density and temperature show significant differences from those predicted by the IRI95 model.

We have recently compiled a database of the properties of 192 impact craters, which supercedes previous compilations. Using our database, the impact structures found in North America, Europe and Australia have been examined; these cratonic areas have been relatively stable for considerably long geological periods, and thus have been best preserved. It is confirmed that there is a close correlation between the geological epoch boundaries, the epochs of mass extinctions, and the ``timing'' of impacts. In addition, the terrestrial cumulative flux of objects >20km is found to be 1.77×10-15km-2yr-1, over the last 120 Myr, which is much smaller than the published values in McEwen et al. (1997) and Shoemaker (1998) (5.6±2.8×10-15km-2yr-1). For terrestrial impact structures with D>50 km, the apparent cumulative flux over the last 2450 Myr is ~50 times smaller than the corresponding value for the Moon. If we assume that the Earth and the Moon suffered the same level of bombardment over this time, this would mean that the actual flux of impacting bodies, capable of making craters with D>50 km, was ~ 50 times larger than the apparent flux estimated from the currently known terrestrial records.

A prototype CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) imaging system has been built and the possibility of applying to the application to astronomical observations has been investigated. The CCD (charge coupled device) image sensor has been the mainstay of image capture and astronomical imaging for the last 30 years, but CMOS devices have shown rapidly increasing success and have been adapted to many commercial imaging systems. Although the photometric performances and system noise of CMOS sensors are lower than that of CCD image sensors, CMOS imaging system can be used to obtain general image capture for astronomical applications.

Korea Astronomy Observatory (KAO) is working to retrofit its 1m robotic telescope in collaboration with a company (ACE, Astronomical Consultants & Equipment). The telescope system is being totally refurbished to make a fully automatic telescope which can operate in both interactive and fully autonomous robotic modes. Progress has been made in design and manufacturing of the telescope mount, mechanics, and optical performance system tests are being made for re-configured primary and secondary mirrors. The optical system is designed to collect 80% incident light within 0.5 arcsec with f/7.5 Ritchey-Chretien design. The telescope mount is an equatorial fork with a friction drive system. The design allows fully programmable tracking speeds with typical range of 15 arcsec/sec with accuracy of +/-5 arcsec/hour. The mount system has integral pointing model software to correct for refraction, and all mechanical errors and misalignments. The pointing model will permit positioning to better than 30 arcsec RMS within 75o from zenith and 45 arcsec RMS elsewhere on the sky. The software is designed for interactive, remote and robotic modes of operation. In interactive and remote mode the user can manually enter coordinates or retrieve them from a computer file. In robotic mode the telescope controller downloads the coordinates in the order determined by the scheduler. The telescope will be equipped with a CCD camera and will be accessible via the internet.

We reinvestigate UV line emissions of 44i Boo, W UMa, AW UMa and VW Cep, which are indicaters of chromospheric activity of these stars. C I, C II, C IV, Si IV lines show significant variation in orbital phase. Among those lines, the Line of C IV showed the strongest line flux. while other Si IV and N V lines showed relative low line intensities. 44i Boo emitted the strongest flux than other stars. UV light curves of target stars showed UV maximum at phase around 0.2 and 0.8. Such UV emissions are generally believed to be observed at the active regions and contacting parts of the two stars due to the clear visibility at the phase 0.2 and 0.8. Total emissivity of four transitions lines lead to conclude that the activity of this region is 40 times larger than the quiet sun. It is obvious that the activity decrease according to increase period. We obtained also Mg II light curve of AW UMa and VW Cep. These stars showed more clearly phase-dependent light curves. We estimated effective temperature of two star, AW UMa and VW Cep, using by Mg II flux.

We developed low light CCD imaging system using thermoelectric cooling method collaboration with a company to design a commercial model. It consists of Kodak KAF-0401E (768x512 pixels) CCD chip,thermoelectric module manufactured by Thermotek. This TEC system can reach an operative temperature of -25deg. We employed an Uniblitz VS25S shutter and it has capability a minimum exposure time 80ms. The system components are an interface card using a Korea Astronomy Observatory (hereafter KAO) ISA bus controller, image acquisition with AD9816 chip, that is 12bit video processor. The performance test with this imaging system showed good operation within the initial specification of our design. It shows a dark current less than 0.4e-/pixel/sec at a temperature of -10deg, a linearity 99.9+/-0.1%, gain 4.24e-adu, and system noise is 25.3e- (rms). For low temperature CCD operation, we designed a TEC, which uses a one-stage peltier module and forced air heat exchanger. This TEC imaging system enables accurate photometry (+/-0.01mag) even though the CCD is not at 'conventional' cryogenic temperatures (140K). The system can be a useful instrument for any other imaging applications. Finally, with this system, we obtained several images of astronomical objects for system performance tests.

We performed CCD photometric observations of W UMa type contact binary BV Dra during eight nights from May 1996 to June 1999 using 61cm telescope at Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory, and completed BVR light curves of the system. From our observations, we derived nine new times of minimum lights (five timings for primary eclipse, four for secondary) and determined new light elements with the times of minima observed since 1999. Our BVR light curves and Batten & Lu (1986)'s radial-velocity ones were simultaneously analyzed with contact mode (Mode 3) of Wilson-Devinney's binary model, and the photometric and spectroscopic solutions for BV Dra were solved. In the analysis, we derived the solutions of 1999 light curves with and without spots, respectively. As the results, asymmetry of light curves may be interpreted as produced by the existence of two spots; hot spot on the secondary and cool on the primary. Combining solutions of light curves and radial-velocity ones, absolute dimensions of BV Dra are M1=0.40M , M2=1.01M ,R1=0.72R , R2=0.40R . In mass-radius diagram, the less massive and hotter primary component of BV Dra is near TAMS and the secondary is near ZAMS, which is very similar to the other W-type W UMa binaries.

We present the results of a model calculation of the stellar distribution in a UV and centered at 2175Å corresponding to the well-known bump in the interstellar extinction curve. The stellar distribution model used here is based on the Bahcall-Soneira galaxy model (1980). The source code for model calculation was designed by Brosch (1991) and modified to investigate various designing factors for UV satellite payload. The model predicts UV stellar densities in different sky directions, and its results are compared with the TD-1 star counts for a number of sky regions. From this study, we can determine the field of view, size of optics, angular resolution, and number of stars in one orbit. There will provide the basic constrains in designing a satellite payload for UV observations.

We obtained UV light curves of 44i Bootis, a W UMa type star from the IUE low dispersion spectra. In order to investigate variations of the emission lines from chromospheric activity and transition region, UV line intensity has been measured for CI, CII, ClV, SiIV, HeII lines. Through plotting the line intensity with the orbital phase, we found that emission lines showed maximum at of the light curves, indicating the chromospheric activity of contact binary, 44i Bootis. We found that the light curves of UV emission lines is strongly modulated by the variation of chromospheric activities of 44i Bootis.

In order to derive the UV color - effective temperature relation, we calculated the effective temperature and ultraviolet color index for about 118 IUE standard stars. Using differential correction method, the effective temperature was obtained by the best fittings of IUE low-dispersion spectra to the Kurucz model (1993), and the UV color index was calculated from the magnitude differences of the UV wavelength between 2750 and 2950 . The temperature determined by the Kurucz model fittings was consistent with that obtained by other investigators (Malagnini & Morossi 1990, Malagnini et al. 1986), except for the low temperature stars. The relations between UV color - effective temperature also was similar to that in Kurucz model.

Photoelectric observations of the neglected eclipsing binary VZ Cep were made on four night during the observing season of 1984 at Sobaeksan Astronomy Observatory. The UBV light curves were secured incompletely with the gap in 0.35-0.75 phases. From the observations three times of minimum lights were determined in three band-passes, which formed one weighted minimum epoch (JD Hel 2446009.0453). With our observations, and improved light elements for VZ Cep is determined using all the photoelectric and CCD times of minimum lights published so far. The (O-C) resid-uals calculated with our light elements show small varying scatters which cannot be negligible. From the analyses of all the times of minima with the Scargles(1982)period-searching and a curve fitting methods, we found possible periodic oscillations of the (O-C) residuals with the period of 1. y26 and the amplitude of 0.d0032. These results, however, have to be considered as a preliminary values until complete analysis for the minimum lights of VZ Cep with enough observational data. Future observations of this binary system are urgently prompted.

Color indexes and effective temperatures for 25 standard stars have been determined as a pilot project which show a relationship between color index and effective temperature in ultraviolet region. The effective temperature was determined by comparing energy distribution curves derived from the IUE low dispersion spectra with Kurucz atmosphere model. The UV color index was deduced by integrating fluxes in 300A interval of the IUE low dispersion spectra. The relation between color index and effective temperature in ultraviolet is similar with that of optical region.

We present the development process of a prototype CCD imaging system which is being built at Korea Astronomy Observatory(KA() for astronomical applications. The CCD imaging system requires very low noise and high stability characteristics and is widely used for astronomical purposes form infrared to ultraviolet wavelength regions. However its system design, particularly for the controller design technique, as heart of the system, is not secured in Korea so far. The prototype electronics developed in this study consists of a single chip controller which was implemented in an EPLD(Erasable Programmable Logic Device) and an analog driver, a video processor with a LN2 cooling cryostat. A PC system was employed to control the whole system and to store the image data considering compatibility of the system. We have successfully obtained the first image in the laboratory with the prototype of this imaging system, and an image of the M15 at Sobaeksan Astronomy Observatory.

The CCD photometric observations of W UMa-type eclipsing binary AB And were made from September 1994 to October 1996. New four primary minimum times were obtained form these observations. The analysis of times of minimum light for AB And confirms other previous studies that the orbital period of AB And have been changing as a form of sinusoidal variation. In this paper, we calculated the new orbital elements with linear and nonlinear quadratic term, and the best fit equation is derived with the assumption that the period variation of AB And changes sinusoidal pattern. From the sinusoidal term of this orbital element, we calculate period variation as 92 years with amplitude of 0d.059. However this result considering only sinusoidal term was not satisfied with our recent observations. Thus, by assuming another parabolic period variation with the sinusoidal pattern, we derived the best fit orbital elements. From the quadratic coefficient of this orbital elements, we calculated the secular variation of 0.73 seconds, and from the sinusoidal term, the period variation turned out to be 62.9 years with amplitude of 0d.024. If we assume only the sinusoidal period variation of AB And, the period has to be decreased with 10 years. However if we consider quadratic term with the sinusoidal period variation of the light elements, the period is expected to be increased. Therefore long-term observations of this binary system are required to confirm this issue.

The BVR CCD photometric observations of W UMa-type eclipsing binary 55 Ari were made on ten nights from November 1996 to December 1996. Eight new times of minimum lights were derived. The analysis of times of minima of 55 Ari confirms the suggestions of other previous investigators that the orbital period of 55 Ari have been suffering from a sinusoidal variation. The amplitude and period for the cyclic period changes were calculated as about 58y and 0.dO53, respectively. The period variation has been discussed in terms of two potential mechanisms: 1) the light-time effect due to a hypothetical third body arid 2) deformations in the convective envelope of a magnetically active component. In the earlier case, the third body has a mass of 1.3Msolar if exists, in the form of a white dwarf or a binary system. It seems that the system velocities from the spectroscopic observations supports this interpretation. Meanwhile in the latter case, the primary component is mainly responsible for the magnetic activity of this system with a theoretical magnitude amplitude of ¡¾0.m08. However, we cannot make a conclusion which is reasonable explanation at this point, due to lack of observational data. Moreover, the period variation of 55 Ari shows duplication about 14y cyclic period with an amplitude of about 0.d001 to the above periodic change. We also cannot make an acceptable conclusion for it at this time.

We evaluated the orbital elements of BV light curves of a short period RS CVn type eclipsing binary system UV Picsium that shows complicated light variation, by analyzing with the Winson-Devinney's differential correction method. Because the analyzed light curves shown large light variation at outside eclipse region, we assumed spotted region of the primary component and calculated its position and size. The results show the UV Psc is a detached binary system of nearly the same radii and the primary component has high mass with high temperature. However this result is not consistant with customary stellar models, thus requires more observational data to confirm this problem.

This report presents the development procedure and the results of a prototype star sensor which can be sued as one of the attitude sensors of the KITSAT-3. The star sensor is a major attitude sensor that can determine the 3-axis attitude information, by comparing between star coordinates in the star catalog and the measured coordinates. The 2 dimensional CCD camera is used for measuring the star coordinates and the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) technology is applied to the image and signal processing. Using the prototype star sensor with thermoelectric cooling technique, we have succesfully obtained the star images around 4th magnitude at Sobaeksan Astronomy Observatory minimizing night sky effect.

The UBV light curves of a close eclipsing binary SW Lyn were obtained with the observations made at the Sobaeksan Astronomy Observatory during 7 nights from September 1983 to March 1987. These light curves show asymmetry to the secondary minimum light and the asymmetry is larger at the shorter wavelength light curve. Assuming that the star spot makes the asymmetry, we employed the WD code to make the B and V light curves solution. We confirmed that SW Lyn has near contact (semi-detached) Roche configuration and has the Case A evolution.

We present a design study for a remote sensing camera system which can be operated in multi-channel mode simultaneously with several bandpass filters. The camera control electronics is based on the multiplexed driving concept, which can provide a variety of flexibility for system control parameters and its individual optimization. The design can also be applied to any system with linear sensors or frame sensors according to its functional requirements. The system design parameters have been examined, including modification of driving waveforms for different types if sensors, waveforms for low-noise readout circuit in analog chain, and synchronization with other signal processing.

The α Lyrae-type eclipsing binary AW Cam was observed photoelectrically in three wavelength regions. The obtained UBV light curves of AW Cam were analyzed with two separate modes (mode 2 for detached systems and mode 5 for semi-detached ones) of the Wilson-Devinney binary model. It is intended to resolve the discrepancy in AW Cam system that the photometric mass ratio (q = 0.21) derived by Russo and Milano (1983) is not consistent with the spectroscopic result (q = 0.43) by Mammano et al. (1967). Our photometric solutions derived with mode 2 are fitted better to the observed light curves than those of mode 5, supporting that AW Cam may be not a normal semi-detached system but a detached with the derived one. Three dimensional Roche configuration of AW Cam system calculated with the derived mass ratio (q = 0.43) reveals that the less massive secondary is well confined within its inner Roche lobe, while the more massive primary is in marginally contact. From the Roche geometry, the constancy of the orbital period and other photometric evidences of AW Cam, it is provisionally concluded that the system is an unevolved detached binary in the phase of case A evolution toward 'contact phase' rather than an evolved one in 'broken-contact phase' suggested by Giuricin and Mardrossian (1981).

Currently, the CCDs are widely used in astronomical observations either in direct imaging use or spectroscopic mode. However according to the recent technical advances, new large format CCDs are rapidly developed which have better performances with higher quantum efficiency and sensitivity. In many cases, some microprocessors have been adopted to deal with necessary digital logic for a CCD imaging system. This could often lack the flexibility of a system for a user to upgrade with new devices, especially of it is a commercial product. A new design concept has been explored which could provide the opportunity to deal with any format of devices from ant manufactures effectively for astronomical purposes. Recently available PLD (Programmable Logic Devices) technology makes it possible to develop such digital circuit design, which can be integrated into a single component, instead of using microprocessors. The design concept could dramatically increase the efficiency and flexibility of a CCD imaging system, particularly when new or large format devices are available and to upgrade the performance of a system. Some variable system control parameters can be selected by a user with a wider range of choice. The software can support such functional requirements very conveniently. This approach can be applied not only to astronomical purpose, but also to some related fields, such as remote sensing and industrial applications.
