1. Developing a game-based learning assessment framework towards ubiquitous computational thinking among undergraduate students

Abstract

This article discusses on a working study from a research on the usage of a game-based learning assessment framework as a standard guideline to assess undergraduate students' understanding and performance towards ubiquitous computational thinking properly. The objective of this research is to construct an appropriate game-based learning assessment framework to learn ubiquitous computational thinking and to determine the importance of the game-based learning approach. The methods in conducting this research study are a mixed method research with Delphi methodology approach. The game-based learning assessment framework was constructed based on results gathered by literature reviewing papers and afterward questionnaires as an online survey given to experts from game development and computer science fields by phases to answer and validate. The results gathered according to phases were performed using thematic analysis and descriptive statistics respectively. The expected results of this study are that the game-based learning assessment framework is able to assess undergraduate students’ understanding and learning performance towards ubiquitous computational thinking and also able to align and incorporate into computing curriculum.

2. Validating the effectiveness of game-based learning approach in the form of video game for assessing computational thinking

Abstract

This research aims to validate the effectiveness of students’ understanding in four aspects of computational thinking with the game-based learning assessment. The four aspects of computational thinking involved in this research are decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithm. This research will use a mixed method design approach with a quasi-experiment using a pre-test and post-test nonequivalent group design. The quasi-experiment will validate the effectiveness of students’ understanding on the decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithm aspects of computational thinking with the game-based learning assessment. The qualitative data gathered will be analyzed using thematic analysis. It is expected that the students’ understanding in four aspects of computational thinking with the game-based learning assessment will vary in terms of the effectiveness.

Abstract

In recent years, as people pay more and more attention to improving their theoretical knowledge, they can ensure online learning anytime and anywhere by adopting mobile learning. This paper mainly analyzes and studies the concept of mobile learning, and briefly describes the online and offline types of mobile learning. Finally, a comparative analysis is made on each seed mode involved in online type and offline type, so as to effectively ensure that the appropriate learning mode is selected according to the comprehensive consideration of learning content, learning demand, learning situation and other factors during mobile learning.

Abstract

Traditional classroom-based learning and teaching methods though established are not effective and insufficient to deliver the object-oriented programming (OOP) to computer science undergraduates. Thus, to resolve this issue, a game-based learning approach to enhance the student’s understanding and improve their learning curves was adopted. Based on the three-layered game-based learning design model, the proposed role-playing game called Odyssey of Phoenix (OoP) was resulted. To test the performance of the OoP, a group of 20 students from the bachelor degree background of computer science who are in their second year were offered to participate a pilot testing to evaluate the game. The outcome of the pilot testing showed satisfactory and positive results whereby most players agreed that OoP was efficient and effective as a learning tool for them to understand and learn about the OOP paradigm

Therefore it is necessary to conduct a study on these matters to propose an efficient and effective educational computer game for higher institution learning and teaching process.
