Abstract

There has been a growing interest in integrating vegetation into the built environment in order to ameliorate the negative effects of increasing urbanisation. In Singapore, government policies encourage the inclusion of skyrise greenery into new and existing buildings. To further streamline workflows, statutory BIM (Building Information Modelling) submissions in architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industries have been mandated. However, landscape plans are still excluded from these BIM submissions due to the lack of a centralised vegetation database and the absence of a standardised BIM format for landscape architectural submissions. This paper presents a streamlined methodology for creating and using a centralised vegetation library for landscape architects. The workflow leverages off the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) standard for data exchange regardless of the BIM authoring software used and provides a framework of four operational modules: an expandable and low-maintenance species-level vegetation library, a BIM authoring workflow that allows inclusion of vegetation objects, an IFC interface, and a lightweight 3D vegetation model generator. This paper also showcases a use-case of embedding information-enriched 3D vegetation objects into a simulated landscape plan. The proposed workflow, when adopted in AEC industries, will enable governing agencies to track diverse greening efforts by the industry and to potentially include other measurements such as cooling performance or maintainability. Abstract

Applying engineering precepts to biological systems has spawn the field of systems biology to investigate a network of interacting components, including the coordination of internal systems of living organisms such as endocrine, nervous, and respiratory with gene and gene product expression, and behavior and environmental factors, and understand how these components together contribute to the disease initiation and progression, biological development, and health. Proceeding from systems biology, systems medicine incorporates complex and dynamic biochemical, physiological, and environmental interactions between all components of disease and health that sustain living organisms. The current special issue includes a selected number of papers presented at the 12th IEEE International Conference on BioInformatics and BioEngineering (BIBE 2012), Nov. 11-13, 2012 under a special session with the same theme, in addition to papers submitted following an open call for papers. The Special Issue presents experiences as well as technological and scientific developments stemming from some flagship projects funded by the EU under the FP7 framework programme aiming to bring together researchers working in the fields of infrastructures and technologies for integrative biomedical research, ICT for predictive and translational medicine and the VPH community at large. A total of 15 papers are included under the following scientific subdomains: 1) mHealth,Wearable Systems and Telemonitoring Services (five papers), 2) Medical Imaging (four papers), and 3) Computational Biology (six papers).

36. Ethnic disparities in antipsychotic drug use in British Columbia: a cross-sectional retrospective study

Abstract

Objective: This study examined ethnic disparities in antipsychotic therapy in a population with significant Asian representation. Methods: Using a cross-sectional retrospective study design, self-reported ethnicity data pooled from three cycles of the Canadian Community Health Survey were linked to 2005 administrative data on physician, hospital, and pharmaceutical use in British Columbia, Canada. Logistic regression was used to model the association between ethnicity and the likelihood of filling one or more prescriptions for any antipsychotic, with controls for sex, age, residence, immigrant status, income, health status, and diagnoses of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and dementia. Results: Of the 27,658 individuals in the sample, 2.2% filled at least one antipsychotic prescription. The proportion varied across ethnic groups: Chinese, 1.0%; other Asians, 1.2%; whites, 2.3%; nonwhite non-Asians, 2.8%; and mixed ethnicity, 4.3%. After adjustment for patient characteristics and diagnoses of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, the likelihood of filling a prescription was found to be lower among Chinese (odds ratio [OR]=.47, 95% confidence interval [CI]=.24–.90) and higher among persons of mixed ethnicity (OR=3.19, CI=1.49–6.83). Further adjustment for depression and dementia diagnoses did not significantly change the ORs for the Chinese (OR=.49, CI=.25–.98) and the mixed ethnic groups (OR=2.97, CI=1.30–6.80). Conclusions: Consistent with the existing literature on ethnic disparities in antipsychotic therapy, the study found evidence of persistent disparities in a population that has a significant number of Asians. Further studies should be done to identify possible causes of these disparities and to identify potential interventions that may reduce or eliminate them.
