Weakly-supervised segmentation (WSS) has emerged as a solution to mitigate the conflict between annotation cost and model performance by adopting sparse annotation formats (e.g., point, scribble, block, etc.). Typical approaches attempt to exploit anatomy and topology priors to directly expand sparse annotations into pseudo-labels. However, due to a lack of attention to the ambiguous edges in medical images and insufficient exploration of sparse supervision, existing approaches tend to generate erroneous and overconfident pseudo proposals in noisy regions, leading to cumulative model error and performance degradation. In this work, we propose a novel WSS approach, named ProCNS, encompassing two synergistic modules devised with the principles of progressive prototype calibration and noise suppression. Specifically, we design a Prototype-based Regional Spatial Affinity (PRSA) loss to maximize the pair-wise affinities between spatial and semantic elements, providing our model of interest with more reliable guidance. The affinities are derived from the input images and the prototype-refined predictions. Meanwhile, we propose an Adaptive Noise Perception and Masking (ANPM) module to obtain more enriched and representative prototype representations, which adaptively identifies and masks noisy regions within the pseudo proposals, reducing potential erroneous interference during prototype computation. Furthermore, we generate specialized soft pseudo-labels for the noisy regions identified by ANPM, providing supplementary supervision. Extensive experiments on three medical image segmentation tasks involving different modalities demonstrate that the proposed framework significantly outperforms representative state-of-the-art methods

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) as a smart reflector is revolutionizing research for next-generation wireless communications. Complementing this is a concept of using RIS as an efficient propagation medium for potentially superior path loss characteristics. Motivated by a recent porous surface architecture that facilitates reconfigurable pathways with cavities filled with fluid metal, this paper studies the propagation characteristics of different pathway configurations in different lossy materials on the reconfigurable surface wave platform by using a commercial full electromagnetic simulation software and S-parameters experiments. This paper also looks into the best scheme to switch between a straight pathway and a $90^\circ$-bend and attempts to quantify the additional path loss when making a turn. Reconfigurable surfaces facilitating energy-efficient, intelligent surface wave propagation have recently emerged as a technology that finds applications in many-core systems and 6G wireless communications. In this paper, we consider the porosity-based reconfigurable surface where there are cavities that can be filled on-demand with fluid metal such as Galinstan, in order to create adaptable channels for efficient wave propagation. We aim to investigate the propagation phenomenon of signal fluctuation resulting from the diffraction of discrete porosity and study how different porosity patterns affect this phenomenon. As an attempt to develop a reconfigurable surface architecture that can use liquid metal such as Galinstan to shape surface channels on demand, this paper considers a punctured surface where cavities are evenly distributed and can be filled with liquid metal potentially via digitally controlled pumps. In this paper, we look at the benefits of such architecture in terms of surface-wave signal enhancement and isolation, and examine how various system parameters impact the performance using full wave 3-dimensional electromagnetic simulations. Surface wave inherently has less propagation loss as it adheres to the surface and minimizes unwanted dissipation in space. Recently, they find applications in network-on-chip (NoC) communications and intelligent surface aided mobile networked communications. This paper puts forward a reconfigurable surface wave platform (RSWP) that utilizes liquid metal to produce highly energy-efficient and adaptive pathways for surface wave transmission. Our simulation results illustrate that the proposed RSWP using Galinstan can obtain a $25{\rm dB}$ gain in the electric field for a propagation distance of $35\lambda$ at $30{\rm GHz}$ where $\lambda$ denotes the wavelength. Optical solitons-stable waves balancing delicately between nonlinearities and dispersive effects-have advanced the field of ultrafast optics and dynamics, with contributions spanning supercontinuum generation and soliton fission, to optical event horizon, Hawking radiation, and optical rogue waves, amongst others. Here we investigate picojoule soliton dynamics in silicon slow-light photonic-bandgap waveguides under the influence of Drude-modeled free-carrier induced nonlinear effects. Using real-time and single shot amplified dispersive Fourier transform spectroscopy simultaneously with high-fidelity cross-correlation frequency-resolved optical gating at femtojoule sensitivity and femtosecond resolution, we examine the soliton stability limits, the soliton dynamics including free-carrier quartic slow-light scaling and acceleration, and the Drude electron-hole-plasma induced perturbations on Cherenkov radiation and modulation instability. Our real-time single shot and time-averaged cross-correlation measurements are matched with our detailed theoretical modeling, examining the reduced group velocity free-carrier kinetics on solitons at picojoule., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures

We have measured the muon flux and production rate of muon-induced neutrons at a depth of 611 m water equivalent. Our apparatus comprises three layers of crossed plastic scintillator hodoscopes for tracking the incident cosmic-ray muons and 760 L of gadolinium-doped liquid scintillator for producing and detecting neutrons. The vertical muon intensity was measured to be $I_{\mu} = (5.7 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-6}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$sr$^{-1}$. The yield of muon-induced neutrons in the liquid scintillator was determined to be $Y_{n} = (1.19 \pm 0.08 (stat) \pm 0.21 (syst)) \times 10^{-4}$ neutrons/($\mu\cdot$g$\cdot$cm$^{-2}$). A fit to the recently measured neutron yields at different depths gave a mean muon energy dependence of $\left\langle E_{\mu} \right\rangle^{0.76 \pm 0.03}$ for liquid-scintillator targets., Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures, 3 tables

In this paper, we describe the design, construction and performance of an apparatus installed in the Aberdeen Tunnel laboratory in Hong Kong for studying spallation neutrons induced by cosmic-ray muons under a vertical rock overburden of 611 meter water equivalent (m.w.e.). The apparatus comprises of six horizontal layers of plastic-scintillator hodoscopes for determining the direction and position of the incident cosmic-ray muons. Sandwiched between the hodoscope planes is a neutron detector filled with 650 kg of liquid scintillator doped with about 0.06% of Gadolinium by weight for improving the efficiency of detecting the spallation neutrons. Performance of the apparatus is also presented.

The magnetic behaviour of nanoparticles of antiferromagnetic ferritin, with a mean Fe loading of 410 atoms per core, has been investigated by 57Fe Mossbauer absorption spectroscopy down to very low temperature (34mK). In previous experi- ments of frequency dependent magnetic susceptibility and magnetic noise performed at 25mK in similar samples, it was claimed that a resonance at a frequency of about 10**8 Hz, due to a macroscopic coherent state, had been observed. However, our search of incoherent tunnel fluctuations around 10**8 Hz using 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy, whose "window" of measurement of fluctuation frequencies lies in this frequency range, was unsuccessful. The magnetic behaviour of nanoparticles of antiferromagnetic ferritin has been investigated by 57Fe Mossbauer absorption spectroscopy and magnetisation measurements, in the temperature range 2.5K-250K and with magnetic fields up to 7T. Samples containing nanoparticles with an average number of Fe atoms ranging from 400 to 2500 were studied. The value of the anisotropy energy per unit volume was determined and found to be in the range 3-6 10**5 ergs/cm3, which is a value typical for ferric oxides. By comparing the results of the two experimental methods at large field, we show that, contratry to what is currently assumed, the uncompensated magnetisation of the feritin cores in the superparamagnetic regime does not follow a Langevin law. For magnetic fields below the spin-flop field, we propose an approximate law for the field and temperature variation of the uncompensated magnetisation which has so far never been applied in antiferromagnetic systems. This approach should more generally hold for randomly oriented antiferro- magnetic nanoparticles systems with weak uncompensated moments., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures
