Abstract

The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. In this study, a small‐sized shredder machine equipped with spiral oriented double‐edged rotating and fixed blades was utilized to shred high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) waste. The performance of the shredder machine was determined based on the recycling and shredding efficiency, the percentage of retention, and the wear of its rotating and fixed blades. The wear of the blades was examined using an optical microscope, a scanning electron microscope, an energy dispersive x‐ray, and an x‐ray diffraction. High recycling (~95 %–98 %) and shredding (~66 %–70 %) efficiency, and low percentage of retention (~1.2 %–4.1 %) indicated a reliable performance of the shredder machine. The rotating blade exhibited higher wear at the back end, compared to the front end for the fixed blade. The wear of the blades was due to scratching and edge chipping. Formation of iron oxides during shredding did not cause significant changes in the hardness of the blades. Based on the evaluation, cost‐effective and time saving maintenance of the shredder blades could be achieved by gradual maintenance starting from the blade exhibited high wear. Abstract

Shredder blades and fixed blades were used as a set of blade pair to perform the shredding action. Comparable research was performed on the blade pair to understand its wear mechanism and shredding performance. The loading distribution along the two‐edge shredder blades in helix configuration was identified. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x‐ray, x‐ray diffractometer analysis, and hardness tests were used to characterise the surface, elemental composition, microstructure, and hardness of the worn blade pair. The shredder blades' wear mechanism was categorised as progressive wear which dominant by abrasive, following by adhesive and oxidation wear. The shredding efficiency of the two‐edge shredder blades in helix configuration was 69.24 %, recycling efficiency at 96.83 % and retention of 3.17 % after the shredding process. Abstract

Lectins are a unique group of nonimmune carbohydrate-binding proteins or glycopro-teins that exhibit specific and reversible carbohydrate-binding activity in a non-catalytic manner. Lectins have diverse sources and are classified according to their origins, such as plant lectins, animal lectins, and fish lectins. Marine organisms including fish, crustaceans, and mollusks produce a myriad of lectins, including rhamnose binding lectins (RBL), fucose-binding lectins (FTL), mannose-binding lectin, galectins, galactose binding lectins, and C-type lectins. The widely used method of extracting lectins from marine samples is a simple two-step process employing a polar salt solution and purification by column chromatography. Lectins exert several immunomodulatory functions, including pathogen recognition, inflammatory reactions, participating in various hemocyte functions (e.g., agglutination), phagocytic reactions, among others. Lectins can also control cell prolifer-ation, protein folding, RNA splicing, and trafficking of molecules. Due to their reported biological and pharmaceutical activities, lectins have attracted the attention of scientists and industries (i.e., food, biomedical, and pharmaceutical industries). Therefore, this review aims to update current information on lectins from marine organisms, their characterization, extraction, and biofunctionali-ties. © 2022 by the authors. Abstract

Background: Among asymptomatic patients with severe carotid artery stenosis but no recent stroke or transient cerebral ischaemia, either carotid artery stenting (CAS) or carotid endarterectomy (CEA) can restore patency and reduce long-term stroke risks. However, from recent national registry data, each option causes about 1% procedural risk of disabling stroke or death. Comparison of their long-term protective effects requires large-scale randomised evidence. Methods: ACST-2 is an international multicentre randomised trial of CAS versus CEA among asymptomatic patients with severe stenosis thought to require intervention, interpreted with all other relevant trials. Patients were eligible if they had severe unilateral or bilateral carotid artery stenosis and both doctor and patient agreed that a carotid procedure should be undertaken, but they were substantially uncertain which one to choose. Patients were randomly allocated to CAS or CEA and followed up at 1 month and then annually, for a mean 5 years. Procedural events were those within 30 days of the intervention. Intention-to-treat analyses are provided. Analyses including procedural hazards use tabular methods. Analyses and meta-analyses of non-procedural strokes use Kaplan-Meier and log-rank methods. The trial is registered with the ISRCTN registry, ISRCTN21144362. Findings: Between Jan 15, 2008, and Dec 31, 2020, 3625 patients in 130 centres were randomly allocated, 1811 to CAS and 1814 to CEA, with good compliance, good medical therapy and a mean 5 years of follow-up. Overall, 1% had disabling stroke or death procedurally (15 allocated to CAS and 18 to CEA) and 2% had non-disabling procedural stroke (48 allocated to CAS and 29 to CEA). Kaplan-Meier estimates of 5-year non-procedural stroke were 2·5% in each group for fatal or disabling stroke, and 5·3% with CAS versus 4·5% with CEA for any stroke (rate ratio [RR] 1·16, 95% CI 0·86–1·57; p=0·33). Abstract

A computed tomography (CT) scanner is often used for visualization during the radiofrequency (RF) ablation (RFA) procedure. Temperatures at the ablation zone, power output, efficiency, and annotation are recorded once per second in the RF generator. Radiologists often review the RF and CT data post-operation for diagnostic and research purposes. However, they often rely on the CT data solely as it is difficult to relate the RF information to its CT counterpart. This paper describes the development of a graphical user interface application to co-register the CT images and the information from the RF generator temporally. Information from the RF generator, CT images during the RFA, and the pre-RFA CT images are displayed together. Users pinpoint a specific timestamp based on the RFA operation, and the corresponding CT images are retrieved and displayed. This record was migrated from the OpenDepot repository service in June, 2017 before shutting down.

Abstract

This study characterises and evaluates an Al2O3:C-based optically stimulated luminescent dosemeter (OSLD) system , commercially known as the nanoDot™ dosemeter and the InLight® microStar reader , for personal and in vivo dose measurements in diagnostic radiology. The system characteristics, such as dose linearity, reader accuracy, reproducibility, batch homogeneity, energy dependence and signal stability, were explored. The suitability of the nanoDot™ dosemeters was evaluated by measuring the depth dose curve, in vivo dose measurement and image perturbation. The nanoDot™ dosemeters were observed to produce a linear dose with ±2.8% coefficient variation. Significant batch inhomogeneity (8.3%) was observed. A slight energy dependence (±6.1%) was observed between 60 and 140 kVp. The InLight® microStar reader demonstrated good accuracy and a reproducibility of ±2%. The depth dose curve measured using nanoDot™ dosemeters showed slightly lower responses than Monte Carlo simulation results. The total uncertainty for a single dose measurement using this system was 11%, but it could be reduced to 9.2% when energy dependence correction was applied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Sand casting is one of the major processes in manufacturing industries today. Inappropriate sand casting mould design have led to casting defects and increased the rejection counts. Therefore, this paper examines the feasibility of producing sand casting pattern with Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) system. FDM is one of additive manufacturing processes that enable the fast, flexible and cost-effective production of sand casting pattern. However, one of the important factors for a good casting quality is the gating system design. Hence, three concepts of gating system were CAD-designed and analysed in this research in order to obtain the optimum design of sand casting mould. The first concept was designed with sprue and riser at both opposite sides, second concept with sprue at the side while riser was placed at the middle top and third concept with sprue and riser both at the middle top. In order to select the best design concept, ANSYS software was chosen. From the simulation result, Concept 1b was selected as the optimum design of gating system design with the highest ranking score based on the criteria; static pressure, density, velocity magnitude, total temperature, internal energy, turbulent viscosity, wall shear stress and velocity streamline. Lastly, an actual sand casting process produced a hand wheel pattern and the results were validated. A comparison made was based on the highest score Concept 1b (sprue/30mm and riser/30mm opposite side) and lowest score Concept 3c (sprue inlet/30mm, sprue outlet/10mm and riser/10mm at middle top) and It showed that Concept 1b provides a better quality in terms of dimensional accuracy and surface finish compared to the other concepts. Abstract

This study describes the application of two in-house developed dosimeters, the Dose Magnifying Glass (DMG) and the MOSkin dosimeter at the Centre for Medical Radiation Physics, University of Wollongong, Australia, for the measurement of CT dose profiles for a clinical diagnostic 16-slice MSCT scanner. Two scanner modes were used; axial mode and helical mode, and the effect of varying beam collimation and pitch was studied. With an increase in beam collimation in axial mode and an increase of CT pitch in helical mode, cumulative point dose at scanner isocentre decreased while FWHM increased. There was generally good agreement to within 3% between the acquired dose profiles obtained by the DMG and the film except at dose profile tails, where film over-responded by up to 30% due to its intrinsic depth dose dependence at low doses.

Abstract

AbstractAs the consciousness of energy saving and carbon reduction and comfortable environment is paid increasing attention to, the common objective of various countries with decreasing energy is to develop and popularize high efficiency and low running noise blowers. This study uses CFD to calculate the flow field and performance of a blower and compare with the experimental measurement. The characteristic curve of blower shows that the simulated and experimental values are close to each other, the difference between the values is only 0.4%. This analysis result proofs the CFD package is a highly reliable tool for the future blower design improvement. In addition, this study discusses the noise distribution of blower flow field, the periodic pressure output value calculated by CFD is used in the sound source input of sound pressure field, so as to simulate and analyze the aerodynamic noise reading of the flow field around the blower. The result shows that the simulated value of flow field around the fan has as high as 80.5 dB(A) ∼ 81.5 dB(A) noise level and is agree with measurement (82 dB(A)). The noise level is low but has a sharp noise. According to the numerical results, designer of the blower modify the tongue geometry and remove the sharp noise.

OBJECTIVE: To develop guidelines on the suitability of patients for carotid endarterectomy (CEA). OPTIONS: For atherosclerotic carotid stenosis that has resulted in retinal or cerebral ischemia: antiplatelet drugs or CEA. For asymptomatic carotid stenosis: CEA or no surgery. Major harms: iatrogenic stroke, cardiac complications and death secondary to surgical manipulations of the artery or the systemic stress of surgery. Costs were not considered. RECOMMENDATIONS: CEA is clearly recommended for patients with surgically accessible internal carotid artery (ICA) stenoses equal to or greater than 70% of the more distal, normal ICA lumen diameter, providing: (1) the stenosis is symptomatic, causing transient ischemic attacks or nondisabling stroke (including retinal infarction); (2) there is no worse distal, ipsilateral, carotid distribution arterial disease; (3) the patient is in stable medical condition; and (4) the rates of major surgical complications (stroke and death) among patients of the treating surgeon are less than 6%. Surgery is not recommended for asymptomatic stenoses of less than 60%. Symptomatic stenoses of less than 70% and asymptomatic stenoses of greater than 60% are uncertain indications. For these indications, consideration should be given to (1) patient presentation, age and medical condition; (2) plaque characteristics such as degree of narrowing, the presence of ulceration and any documented worsening of the plaque over time; (3) other cerebral arterial stenoses or occlusions, or cerebral infarcts identified through neuroimaging; and (4) surgical complication rates at the institution. CEA should not be considered for asymptomatic stenoses unless the combined stroke and death rate among patients of the surgeon is less than 3%. VALIDATION: These guidelines generally agree with position statements prepared by other organizations in recent years, and with a January 1995 consensus statement by a group of experts assembled by the American Heart Association.
