Abstract Interface engineering is pivotal for enhancing the performance and stability of devices with layered structures, including solar cells, electronic devices, and electrochemical systems. Incorporating the interfacial dipole between the bulk layers effectively modulates the energy level difference at the interface and does not significantly influence adjacent layers overall. However, interfaces can drastically affect adjoining layers in ultrathin devices, which are essential for next‐generation electronics with high integrity, excellent performance, and low power consumption. In particular, the interfacial effect is pronounced in ultrathin semiconductors, which have a weak electric field screening effect. Herein, the substantial interfacial impact on the ultrathin silicon is shown, the p‐ to n‐type inversion of the semiconductor solely through the deposition of a self‐assembled monolayer (SAM) without external bias. The effects of SAMs with different interfacial dipoles are investigated by using Hall measurement and surface analytic techniques, such as UPS, XPS, and KPFM. Furthermore, the lateral electronic junction of the ultrathin silicon is engineered by the regioselective deposition of SAMs with opposite dipoles, and the device exhibits rectification behavior. When the interfacial dipole of SAM is manipulated, the rectification ratio changes sensitively, and thus the fabricated diode shows potential to be developed as a sensing platform.

This study presents two outlier-robust extended Kalman filtering (OREKF) methods for battery-state estimation. The first method is the auto-tuning (AT)-OREKF method, and the second is the expectation-maximization (EM)-OREKF method. The AT-OREKF is an optimization-based adaptive EKF in which the parameters defining the prior and noise distributions are automatically learned using gradient-based methods. The EM-OREKF is a robust EKF that uses probabilistic inference, for which the expectation-maximization algorithm is applied to determine the hyperparameters of latent variables corresponding to outliers. An outlier is a data point or value that differs considerably from all or most of the other data in a dataset. AT-OREKF does not detect outliers, but adaptively tunes the parameters of optimization-based state estimation, known as moving horizon estimation, which implies that the resulting estimation can be vulnerable to dominant outliers. By contrast, EM-OREKF detects bad data in real-time using a variational EM algorithm to estimate the distribution of binary random variables, indicating outliers. To demonstrate the robustness of the proposed AT-OREKF and EM-OREKF methods, the Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule was applied to the lithium-ion battery simulations in electric vehicle driving. The simulation results show 25.76% and 93.85% reductions in estimation errors upon applying the AT-OREKF and EM-OREKF, respectively, when compared with an ordinary EKF. The EM-OREKF shows better robustness to dominant outliers; however, the AT-OREKF can be used as an alternative because it is reliable in the presence of low outliers and requires less computation.

Abstract Ionovoltaics is a breakthrough concept in energy conversion that harnesses water motion with ion dynamics to generate electrical energy. This phenomenon is based on the interaction between the nanoscopic ionic behavior at the solid–liquid interface and the flow of electrons in a semiconductor electrode. Ionovoltaic research aims to present the most rational and convincing mechanism for the much‐debated principle of energy conversion by water motion through a deeper understanding of solid–liquid interfacial phenomena and to discuss the potential to transform related fields through the development of enabling technologies such as novel energy harvesters, interfacial analysis tools, and bio/chemical sensors. Furthermore, efforts to develop high‐efficiency ionovoltaic device powered by small water droplets indicate a potential contribution to the advancement of green energy systems that complement solar and wind power generation and address environmental pollution and energy shortages. This review paper explores the evolution of energy harvesting technologies using water motion, with a particular focus on ionovoltaics as an emerging field. By establishing the fundamentals, this study investigates solid–liquid interfaces, semiconductor properties, and natural water motion‐driven ionovoltaic phenomena and also highlights that extensive research on complex ion/interface phenomena can have practical applications in diverse industrial fields.

Abstract Ion–solid surface interactions are one of the fundamental principles in liquid‐interfacing devices ranging from various electrochemical systems to electrolyte‐driven energy conversion devices. The interplays between these two phases, especially containing charge carriers in the solid layer, work as a pivotal role in the operation of these devices, but corresponding details of those effects remain as unrevealed issues in academic fields. Herein, an ion–charge carrier interaction at an electrolyte–semiconductor interface is interrogated with an ion‐dynamics‐induced (ionovoltaic) energy transducer, controlled by interfacial self‐assembled molecules. An electricity generating mechanism from interfacial ionic diffusion is elucidated in terms of the ion–charge carrier interaction, originated from a dipole potential effect of the self‐assembled molecular layer (SAM). In addition, this effect is found to be modulated via chemical functionalization of the interfacial molecular layer and transition metal ion complexation therein. With the aiding of surface analytic techniques and a liquid‐interfacing Hall measurement, electrical behaviors of the device depending on the magnitude of the ion‐ligand complexation are interrogated, thereby demonstrating the ion–charge carrier interplays spanning at electrolyte–SAM‐semiconductor interface. Hence, this system can be applied to study molecular interactions, including chemical and physical influences, occurring at the solid–liquid interfacial region.

Preclinical animal studies have continuously reported the possibility of long-lasting neurotoxic effects after general anesthesia in young animals. Such studies also show that the neurological changes induced by anesthesia in young animals differ by their neurodevelopmental stage. Exposure to anesthetic agents increase dendritic spines and induce sex-dependent changes of excitatory/inhibitory synaptic transmission in late postnatal mice, a critical synaptogenic period. However, the mechanisms underlying these changes remain unclear. Abnormal activation of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway, an important regulator of neurodevelopment, has also been shown to induce similar changes during neurodevelopment. Interestingly, previous studies show that exposure to general anesthetics during neurodevelopment can activate the mTOR signaling pathway. This study, therefore, evaluated the role of mTOR signaling after exposing postnatal day (PND) 16/17 mice to sevoflurane, a widely used inhalation agent in pediatric patients. We first confirmed that a 2-h exposure of 2.5% sevoflurane could induce widespread mTOR phosphorylation in both male and female mice. Pretreatment with the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin not only prevented anesthesia-induced mTOR phosphorylation, but also the increase in mitochondrial respiration and male-dependent enhancement of excitatory synaptic transmission. However, the changes in inhibitory synaptic transmission that appear after anesthesia in female mice were not affected by rapamycin pretreatment. Our results suggest that mTOR inhibitors may act as potential therapeutic agents for anesthesia-induced changes in the developing brain.

Herein, we describe novel pentafluorosulfanyl (SF5) group-containing meta-diamide insecticides. For the facile preparation of the SF5-based compounds 4a–d, practical synthetic methods were applied. Among newly synthesized compounds, 3-benzamido-N-(2,6-dimethyl-4-(pentafluoro-λ6-sulfanyl)phenyl)-2-fluorobenzamide 4d showed (i) a high insecticidal activity, (ii) an excellent selectivity to insects, and (iii) good levels of water solubility and log P values. In this study, we demonstrated that the pentafluorosulfanyl moiety could serve as an attractive functionality for the discovery of a new scope of crop-protecting agents.

Novel anthranilic diamides with sulfilimidoyl and sulfoximidoyl functionalities were successfully prepared. Among newly-prepared organosulfur compounds, 3-bromo-1-(3-chloropyridin-2-yl)-N-(2-methyl-6-(methylcarbamoyl)-4-(methylthio)phenyl)-1H-pyrazole-5-carboxamide and (S,E)-3-bromo-1-(3-chloropyridin-2-yl)-N-(2-methyl-4-(S-methyl-N-(2,2,2-trifluoroacetyl)sulfinimidoyl)-6-(methylcarbamoyl)phenyl)-1H-pyrazole-5-carboxamide showed good levels of efficacy and a strong correlation between insecticidal activities and physical properties, respectively. In particular, available data indicated that the N-trifluoroacetyl sulfilimine moiety could be an appealing structural scaffold for the discovery of a new crop-protecting agent.

BackgroundGabapentin is thought to exert an effect through the voltage-dependent calcium channel. Vitamin E is a widely known antioxidant which neutralizes the harmful effect of ROS which is considered to play a prominent role in various painful conditions. This study was therefore conducted to assess the antinociceptive effects of gabapentin and vitamin E and the interaction of these drugs in the modulation of pain in rats subjected to a formalin test.MethodsSprague-Dawley rats with a lumbar intrathecal catheter were tested for their paw flinches by 5% formalin injection after intrathecal injection of gabapentin or vitamin E. After obtaining dose-response curves for each drug, the effect of the combination was tested by the total dose fraction value and isobolographic analysis.ResultsWhen a single drug was injected intrathecally, significant dose-dependent decreases in flinches were shown only in the late phase. ED50 values of intrathecal gabapentin and vitamin E in the late phase were 75.3 ± 9.58 µg, and 17.56 ± 1.65 mg/kg respectively. The combination of gabapentin and vitamin E produced dose-dependent decreases in the number of flinches in both phases induced by the formalin test. The ED50 value of the combination was lower than the theoretical additive values in the late phase, but did not show a significant difference with the theoretical additive value.ConclusionsGabapentin and vitamin E (by itself) have no antinociceptive effect in the early phase; however their combination has shown an antinociceptive effect. In addition, they show additive effects in the late phase of the formalin test.

BackgroundReactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide radicals, hydrogen peroxide, nitric oxide, and nitroperoxide, cause oxidative stress which interferes with normal cell functioning, resulting in cell damage. It is reported to be associated with chronic pain, especially neuropathic pain, and inflammatory pain. ROS is also closely related to central sensitization. Therefore, this study was designed to explore the effects of Phenyl N-tert-butylnitrone (PBN), an ROS scavenger, in acute, continuous, and increasing pain caused by central sensitization.MethodsMale Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 2 groups, an intraperitoneal group (IP) and an intrathecal group (IT), and once again divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group was injected with Phenyl N-tert-butylnitrone (PBN), a free radical scavenger, either intraperitoneally or intrathecally. After inducing pain by injecting formalin into the hind paw, pain behaviors were measured. Lumbar enlargement immmunohistochemistry was performed to assess nitrotyrosine, an oxidative stress marker, to identify the degree of protein nitration.ResultsBoth experimental groups of IP and IT showed statistically significant decreases in the number of flinches compared to the control group in phase 1 and 2. Immunohistochemical evaluation in the control group revealed an increase in nitrated proteins in the gray matter of the lumbar spinal cord, but a significant decrease in nitrated proteins in the gray matter of lumbar spinal cord of the experimental group.ConclusionsIntraperitoneal and intrathecal administration of PBN decreases analgesic behaviors, allowing us to believe that ROS is mainly responsible for acute pain and central sensitization.

BackgroundRemifentanil is useful during general anesthesia because of its rapid onset and short acting time. However, some studies report that due to opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH) and tolerance, remifentanil also increases early postoperative pain. The occurrence of OIH and opioid-induced tolerance is mainly thought to be due to central sensitization by the activation of NMDA receptors. Therefore, we investigated the effects of continuous infusion of ketamine, an NMDA receptor antagonist, on postoperative pain and the quantity of opioids used.Methods40 patients scheduled to undergo laparoscopic gynecologic surgery were randomly allocated into two groups. Anesthesia was equally maintained with sevoflurane and 4 ng/ml of remifentanil in all patients. Ketamine (0.3 mg/kg) was injected and followed with a continuous dosage of 3 µl/kg/min in the ketamine group (n = 20) while the control group was injected and infused with an equal amount of normal saline. We compared postoperative VAS up to 7 hours and morphine demand through PCA.ResultsPostoperative VAS and morphine demand was significantly lower in the ketamine group 2 and 3 hours after surgery, respectively.ConclusionsWhen general anesthesia is maintained with sevoflurane and remifentanil in patients undergoing laparoscopic gynecologic surgery, continuous infusion of low dose ketamine decreased early postoperative pain and the quantity of opioids used.

BackgroundCoughing during emergence from general anesthesia may be detrimental in children. We compared the effect of a small dose of propofol or ketamine administered at the end of sevoflurane anesthesia on the incidence or severity of coughing in children undergoing a minimal invasive operation.MethodsOne hundred and eighteen children aged between 3 and 15 years, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) status I, were enrolled in this randomized double blind study. Anesthesia was induced with propofol or ketamine and maintained with sevoflurane in N2O/O2. Each group received propofol 0.25 mg/kg or ketamine 0.25 mg/kg and the control group received saline 0.1 ml/kg. The decision to perform tracheal extubation was based on specified criteria, including the resumption of spontaneous respiration. During emergence from anesthesia and extubation, coughing was observed and graded at predefined times.ResultsThe incidence of emergence without coughing was higher in the propofol group than in the ketamine and control group (19%, 11% and 6%, respectively), whereas the incidence of severe coughing was higher in the control group than in propofol and ketamine group (17.14%, 10.0% and 6.98%, respectively).ConclusionsThe addition of propofol 0.25 mg/kg decreased the incidence of coughing after sevoflurane general anesthesia in children undergoing non-painful procedures.

BackgroundKnowledge regarding normal upper airway anatomy is essential for airway management and is required to prevent malpositioning of endotracheal tubes. We evaluated the length of the upper airway in Korean children and adults who had no abnormality of the upper airway using a fiberoptic bronchoscope.MethodsEighty seven patients aged 5 to 81 years undergoing noninvasive elective surgery were included in this study. After induction of anesthesia was complete, we measured the distance from the upper incisor to various components of the upper airway by fiberoptic bronchoscopy.ResultsIn adults, the mean length between the upper incisor and midtrachea was found to be 21.8 ± 1.8 cm in males and 19.9 ± 1.3 cm in females, while the mean length of the trachea was 10.1 ± 1.3 cm in males and 10.3 ± 1.6 cm in females. The length between the upper incisor and midtrachea (IT) were correlated with height both in children (IT [cm] = 2.531 + 0.109 × height [cm]) and adults (IT [cm] = 0.167 + 0.127 × height [cm]), which shows that they differ from the western standard (length of tube [cm] = 5 + 0.1 × height [cm]).ConclusionsIn adults and children, the length from the incisor to the midtrachea was significantly different when compared with western standards. Therefore, re-evaluation of the proper and precise depth of endotracheal tube in Koreans should be considered.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic, progressive, and devastating pain syndrome characterized by spontaneous pain, hyperalgesia, allodynia, altered skin temperature, and motor dysfunction. Although previous gene expression profiling studies have been conducted in animal pain models, there genome-wide expression profiling in the whole blood of CRPS patients has not been reported yet. Here, we successfully identified certain pain-related genes through genome-wide expression profiling in the blood from CRPS patients.
