A CaO2 peroxide reservoir in polyether sulfone and poly(vinylidene fluoride) polymer beads enables the haloperoxidase reaction of Bi0.2Ce0.8O1.9 enzyme mimics without external addition of H2O2.

Highly transparent CeO2/polycarbonate surfaces were manufactured that prevent adhesion, proliferation, and spread of bacteria. CeO2 nanoparticles with diameters of 10-15 nm and lengths of 100-200 nm for this application were prepared by oxidizing aqueous dispersions of Ce(OH)3 with H2O2 in the presence of nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) as capping agent. The surface functionalized water dispersible CeO2 nanorods showed high catalytic activity in halogenation reactions which makes them highly efficient functional mimics of haloperoxidases. These enzymes are used in nature to prevent the formation of biofilms through the halogenation of signaling compounds that interfere with bacterial cell-cell communication (“quorum sensing”). Bacteria-repellent CeO2/polycarbonate plates were prepared by dip-coating plasma-treated polycarbonate plates in aqueous CeO2 particle dispersions. The quasi-enzymatic activity of the CeO2 coating was demonstrated using phenol red enzyme assays. The monolayer coating of CeO2 nanorods (1.6 µg/cm2) and the bacteria repellent properties were demonstrated by atomic force microscopy, biofilm assays and fluorescence measurements. The engineered polymer surfaces have the promise to repel biofilms as green antimicrobials on plastics where H2O2 is present in the humid environment such as automotive parts, greenhouses or plastic containers for rainwater.

Given the inherent performance limitations of intercalation‐based lithium‐ion batteries, solid‐state conversion batteries are promising systems for future energy storage. A high specific capacity and natural abundancy make iron disulfide (FeS2) a promising cathode‐active material. In this work, FeS2 nanoparticles were prepared solvothermally. By adjusting the synthesis conditions, samples with average particle diameters between 10 nm and 35 nm were synthesized. The electrochemical performance was evaluated in solid‐state cells with a Li‐argyrodite solid electrolyte. While the reduction of FeS2 was found to be irreversible in the initial discharge, a stable cycling of the reduced species was observed subsequently. A positive effect of smaller particle dimensions on FeS2 utilization was identified, which can be attributed to a higher interfacial contact area and shortened diffusion pathways inside the FeS2 particles. These results highlight the general importance of morphological design to exploit the promising theoretical capacity of conversion electrodes in solid‐state batteries., Particle‐size reduction of iron sulfide nanoparticles improves its performance as an active material in solid‐state conversion cathodes: For reduced particle dimensions, the electrochemical utilization of FeS2 is increased. The potential of FeS2 as an electrode in solid‐state batteries is highlighted and the importance of the morphological design of battery materials is underscored.

Zinc phosphate, an important pigment in phosphate conversion coatings, forms protective films on rubbing surfaces. We have simulated the underlying reactions under shear by ball-milling zinc phosphate and monitored the reaction of hopeite (Zn3(PO4)2·4H2O) and the retarded recrystallization of the amorphous reaction product by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and quantitative infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Abrasion of stainless steel was simulated by addition of pure 57Fe. The results provide insight into the chemistry of phosphate conversion coatings or during battery cycling of metal phosphates and give theoretical guidance for the preparation of amorphous phosphates. Thermal analysis revealed that the release of structural water is a key step during the reaction of hopeite under shear to ball-milled amorphous zinc phosphate. The back-reaction and associated recrystallization kinetics of amorphous zinc phosphate show a classical Langmuir behavior. Fe impurities inhibit the recrystallization of ball-milled amorphous zinc phosphate strongly. 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy and PXRD revealed that Fe is oxidized to Fe2+ and Fe3+ during ball-milling and incorporated locally at the tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the structure. Ball-milled amorphous zinc phosphate is metastable as γ-Zn3−xFex(PO4)2. EPR studies showed the incorporation of Fe3+ to be coupled with the formation of Zn2+ vacancies. The Fe3+ defect sites bind water because of their higher Pearson hardness (compared to Fe2+ and Zn2+), thereby reducing water mobility and inhibiting further reactions like the recrystallization to hopeite. Our findings reveal the amorphization mechanism of Zn3(PO4)2·4H2O in stainless steel ball mills at the atomic scale and highlight how the reactivity of amorphous products is affected by impurities associated with the processing method.

Localized surface plasmon resonance properties in unconventional materials like metal oxides or chalcogenide semiconductors have been studied for use in signal detection and analysis in biomedicine and photocatalysis. We devised a selective synthesis of the tungsten oxides WO3-x and (NH4)xWO3 with tunable plasmonic properties. We selectively synthesized WO3-x nanorods with different aspect ratios and hexagonal tungsten bronzes (NH4)xWO3 as truncated nanocubes starting from ammonium metatungstate (NH4)6H2W12O40·xH2O. Both particles form from the same nuclei at temperatures >200 °C; monomer concentration and surfactant ratio are essential variables for phase selection. (NH4)xWO3 was the preferred reaction product only for fast heating rates (25 K min-1), slow stirring speeds (∼150 rpm) and high precursor concentrations. A proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopic study of the reaction mechanism revealed that oleyl oleamide, formed from oleic acid and oleylamine upon heating, is a key factor for the selective formation of WO3-x nanorods. Since oleic acid and oleylamine are standard surfactants for the wet chemical synthesis of many metal and oxide nanoparticles, the finding that oleyl oleamide acts as a chemically active reagent above 250 °C may have implications for many nanoparticle syntheses. Oriented attachment of polyoxotungstate anions is proposed as a model to rationalize phase selectivity. Magic angle spinning (MAS) 1H-NMR and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) studies of the bronze after annealing under (non)inert conditions revealed an oxidative phase transition. WO3-x and (NH4)xWO3 show a strong plasmon absorption for near infra-red light between 800 and 3300 nm. The maxima of the plasmon bands shift systematically with the nanocrystal aspect ratio.

Selective oxidation of thioethers is an important reaction to obtain sulfoxides as synthetic intermediates for applications in the chemical industry, medicinal chemistry and biology or the destruction of warfare agents. The reduced Magneli-type tungsten oxide WO3−x possesses a unique oxidase-like activity which facilitates the oxidation of thioethers to the corresponding sulfoxides. More than 90% of the model system methylphenylsulfide could be converted to the sulfoxide with a selectivity of 98% at room temperature within 30 minutes, whereas oxidation to the corresponding sulfone was on a time scale of days. The concentration of the catalyst had a significant impact on the reaction rate. Reasonable catalytic effects were also observed for the selective oxidation of various organic sulfides with different substituents. The WO3−x nanocatalysts could be recycled at least 5 times without decrease in activity. We propose a metal oxide-catalyzed route based on the clean oxidant hydrogen peroxide. Compared to other molecular or enzyme catalysts the WO3−x system is a more robust redox-nanocatalyst, which is not susceptible to decomposition or denaturation under standard conditions. The unique oxidase-like activity of WO3−x can be used for a wide range of applications in synthetic, environmental or medicinal chemistry.

Thermal decomposition is a promising route for the synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles because size and morphology can be tuned by minute control of the reaction variables. We synthesized CoO nanooctahedra with diameters of ∼48 nm and a narrow size distribution. Full control over nanoparticle size and morphology could be obtained by controlling the reaction time, surfactant ratio, and reactant concentrations. We show that the particle size does not increase monotonically with time or surfactant concentration but passes through minima or maxima. We unravel the critical role of the surfactants in nucleation and growth and rationalize the observed experimental trends in accordance with simulation experiments. The as-synthesized CoO nanooctahedra exhibit superior electrocatalytic activity with long-term stability during oxygen evolution. The morphology of the CoO particles controls the electrocatalytic reaction through the distinct surface sites involved in the oxygen evolution reaction.

PEG is the gold standard polymer for pharmaceutical applications, however it lacks degradability. Degradation under physiologically relevant pH as present in endolysosomes, cancerous and inflammatory tissues is crucial for many areas. The authors present anionic ring‐opening copolymerization of ethylene oxide with 3,4‐epoxy‐1‐butene (EPB) and subsequent modification to introduce acid‐degradable vinyl ether groups as well as methacrylate (MA) units, enabling radical cross‐linking. Copolymers with different molar ratios of EPB, molecular weights (M n) up to 10 000 g mol−1 and narrow dispersities (Đ, Responsive gels: P(EG‐co‐isoEPB)MA, a PEG copolymer with acidic degradability under physiologically relevant pH is employed for hydrogels. The attached methacrylate units enable radical cross‐linking to form protein‐loaded hydrogels. Both the P(EG‐co‐isoEPB)MA copolymer as well as the respective hydrogels show rapid and tailorable hydrolysis at physiologically relevant pH (pH 5–6), despite excellent storage stability at neutral pH (pH 7.4).

Preventing bacterial adhesion on materials surfaces is an important problem in marine, industrial, medical and environmental fields and a topic of major medical and societal importance. A defense strategy of marine organisms against bacterial colonization relies on the biohalogenation of signaling compounds that interfere with bacterial communication. These reactions are catalyzed by haloperoxidases, a class of metal-dependent enzymes, whose activity can be emulated by ceria nanoparticles. The enzyme-like activity of ceria was enhanced by a factor of 3 through bismuth substitution (Ce1−xBixO2−δ). The solubility of Bi3+ in CeO2 is confined to the range 0 < x < 0.25 under quasi-hydrothermal conditions. The Bi3+ cations are located close to the nanoparticle surface because their ionic radii are larger than those of the tetravalent Ce4+ ions. The synthesis of Ce1−xBixO2−δ (0 < x < 0.25) nanoparticles was upscaled to yields of ∼50 g. The halogenation activity of Ce1−xBixO2−δ was demonstrated with phenol red assays. The maximum activity for x ≈ 0.2 is related to the interplay of the ζ-potential of surface-engineered Ce1−xBixO2−δ nanoparticles and their BET surface area. Ce0.80Bi0.20O1.9 nanoparticles with optimized activity were incorporated in polyethersulfone beads, which are typical constituents of water filter membrane supports. Although Ce1−xBixO2−δ nanoparticles are not bactericidal on their own, naked Ce1−xBixO2−δ nanoparticles and polyethersulfone/Ce1−xBixO2−δ nanocomposites showed a strongly reduced bacterial coverage. We attribute the decreased adhesion of the Gram-negative soil bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa and of Phaeobacter gallaeciensis, a primary bacterial colonizer in marine biofilms, to the formation of halogenated signaling compounds. No biocides are needed, H2O2 (formed in daylight) and halide are the only substrates required. The haloperoxidase-like activity of Ce1−xBixO2−δ may be a promising starting point for the development of environmentally friendly, “green” nanocomposites, when the use of conventional biocides is prohibited.

Injectable bone substitutes (IBS) are increasingly being used in the fields of orthopedics and maxillofacial/oral surgery. The rheological properties of IBS allow for proper and less invasive filling of bony defects. Vaterite is the most unstable crystalline polymorph of calcium carbonate and is known to be able to transform into hydroxyapatite upon contact with an organic fluid (e.g., interstitial body fluid). Two different concentrations of hydrogels based on poly(ethylene glycol)-acetal-dimethacrylat (PEG-a-DMA), i.e., 8% (w/v) (VH-A) or 10% (w/v) (VH-B), were combined with vaterite nanoparticles and implanted in subcutaneous pockets of BALB/c mice for 15 and 30 days. Explants were prepared for histochemical staining and immunohistochemical detection methods to determine macrophage polarization, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) to analyze elemental composition was used for the analysis. The histopathological analysis revealed a comparable moderate tissue reaction to the hydrogels mainly involving macrophages. Moreover, the hydrogels underwent a slow cellular infiltration, revealing a different degradation behavior compared to other IBS. The immunohistochemical detection showed that M1 macrophages were mainly found at the material surfaces being involved in the cell-mediated degradation and tissue integration, while M2 macrophages were predominantly found within the reactive connective tissue. Furthermore, the histomorphometrical analysis revealed balanced numbers of pro- and anti-inflammatory macrophages, demonstrating that both hydrogels are favorable materials for bone tissue regeneration. Finally, the EDX analysis showed a stepwise transformation of the vaterite particle into hydroxyapatite. Overall, the results of the present study demonstrate that hydrogels including nano-vaterite particles are biocompatible and suitable for bone tissue regeneration applications.

Graphene-based nanocomposites with inorganic (metal and metal oxide) nanoparticles leads to materials with high catalytic activity for a variety of chemical transformations. Graphene and its derivatives such as graphene oxide, highly reduced graphene oxide, or nitrogen-doped graphene are excellent support materials due to their high surface area, their extended π-system, and variable functionalities for effective chemical interactions to fabricate nanocomposites. The ability to fine-tune the surface composition for desired functionalities enhances the versatility of graphene-based nanocomposites in catalysis. This review summarizes the preparation of graphene/inorganic NPs based nanocomposites and their use in catalytic applications. We discuss the large-scale synthesis of graphene-based nanomaterials. We have also highlighted the interfacial electronic communication between graphene/inorganic nanoparticles and other factors resulting in increased catalytic efficiencies.

Calcium sulfate is an important construction material. More than 1600 million square meters of interior surfaces are covered with plasterboards in Europe each year. Plasterboard is manufactured by transforming mined or recycled gypsum (CaSO4 × 2 H2O) to bassanite (CaSO4 × ½H2O) in a time- and energy-consuming heating process. A fast and sustainable way to produce bassanite by solvent-assisted milling, thereby eliminating the need for energy-intensive dehydration, is described. The milling reaction is complete after ≈200 min. Kinetic studies revealed that gypsum crystals transform to bassanite by shear forces during milling. 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic techniques and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) show that the resulting bassanite nanocrystals are stabilized by surface functionalization with the auxiliary solvent methanol. Bassanite particles produced over extended milling times of 990 min form long-term stable dispersions without stabilizers and no signs of precipitation. Addition of water to bassanite leads to instant agglomeration, followed by a phase change to gypsum. The dispersibility in volatile methanol and the elucidation of the crystallization mechanism allow also for applications of the bassanite nanocrystals in hybrid materials. © 2022 The Authors. Ce1−xLnxO2−x/2 nanocrystals prepared mechanochemically from CeCl3, LnCl3, and Na2CO3 show enhanced haloperoxidase activity. ESR and IR spectroscopy revealed the Ln3+ distribution in the CeO2 host and the presence of Ce3+ and O2− surface species.

Solid state reactions are slow because the diffusion of atoms or ions through the reactant, intermediate and crystalline product phases is the rate-limiting step. This requires days or even weeks of high temperature treatment, and consumption of large amounts of energy. We employed spark-plasma sintering, an engineering technique that is used for high-speed consolidation of powders with a pulsed electric current passing through the sample to carry out the fluorination of niobium oxide in minute intervals. The approach saves time and large amounts of waste energy. Moreover, it allows the preparation of fluorinated niobium oxides on a gram scale using poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (®Teflon) scrap and without toxic chemicals. The synthesis can be upscaled easily to the kg range with appropriate sintering equipment. Finally, NbO2F and Nb3O7F prepared by spark plasma sintering show significant photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxygen evolution from water in terms of photocurrent density and incident photon-to-current efficiency (% IPCE), whereas NbO2F and Nb3O7F prepared by conventional high temperature chemistry show little to no PEC response. Our study is a proof of concept for the quick, clean and energy saving production of valuable photocatalysts from plastic waste.

The predicted global cancer burden is expected to surpass 20 million new cancer cases by 2025. Despite recent advancement in tumor therapy, a successful cancer treatment remains challenging. The emerging field of nanotechnology offers great opportunities for diagnosis, imaging, as well as treatment of cancer. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NP) were shown to exert selective cytotoxicity against tumor cells via a yet unknown mechanism, most likely involving the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). These nanoparticles are a promising therapeutic opportunity as zinc is a nontoxic trace element and its application in medically-related products is considered to be safe. We could show that ZnO NP can exert cytotoxic effects on several human tumor cell lines. There can be found ZnO NP concentrations which selectively damage tumor cells while human fibroblasts do not sustain lasting damage. Cytotoxicity is attributable to the release of zinc ions from the nanoparticles outside the cells as well as to a direct cell-nanoparticle interaction. This involves uptake of the particles into the tumor cells. With a silica shell the cytotoxicity can be delayed which can help in the future for a safe transport in the blood stream. Cellular damage finally cumulates in apoptotic cell death via zinc overload within 48 h after treatment with ZnO NP. A therapeutical perspective could be the targeted accumulation of ZnO NP at the tumor side to induce local zinc overload that substantially damages the tumor cells with no or low side effects. We suggest further studies to explore the potential of ZnO NP as an innovative anti-tumor agent.

Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeNPs) have been shown to exhibit antioxidant capabilities, but their efficiency in scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the underlying mechanisms are not yet well understood. In this study, cerium dioxide nanoparticles (CeNPs) and nanorods (CeNRs) were found to exhibit much stronger scavenging activity than ·OH generation in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and surrogate lung fluid (SLF). The larger surface area and higher defect density of CeNRs may lead to higher ·OH scavenging activity than for CeNPs. These insights are important to understand the redox activity of cerium nanomaterials and provide clues to the role of CeNPs in biological and environmental processes.

Inspired by the good performance of argyrodites as ion conducting thermoelectrics and as solid electrolytes we investigated the effect of isovalent S2- substitution for Se2- in Cu7PSe6. At room temperature Cu7PSe6 crystallizes in the primitive cubic β-polymorph of the argyrodite structure and transforms to the face-centered high-temperature (HT) γ-modification above 320 K. The transition for the homologous Cu7PS6 occurs at 510 K. Promising thermoelectric and ion conducting properties are observed only in the HT modification, where the cations are mobile. Using Rietveld refinements against X-ray diffraction data the effect of isovalent S2- substitution for Se2- on the structural and transport properties in Cu7PSe6-xSx was analyzed. While a step-wise incorporation of S2- showed typical behavior for a homogeneous solid solution series, the analysis of the diffraction data gave clear evidence of anion ordering due to site preference of the sulfide ions, which can be rationalized using Pearson's HSAB concept. This leads to a stabilization of the HT structure even at lower temperatures. This selective control enables new strategies for the design of argyrodite materials, as isovalent substitution not only allows an engineering of properties, but also permits the stabilization of the polymorph with the most promising properties.
