Tetraaryladamantanes have proven useful as chaperones for the co-crystallization of small molecules that do not readily crystallize by themselves. The co-crystals are often useful for structure elucidation. Usually, the small molecules are encapsulated in the crystal lattice of the aryladamantane that forms during rapid thermal crystallization. Thus far, co-crystallization has been limited to liquids as guest molecules. Here we report the co-crystal structures of phenol, which is solid at room temperature, with both 1,3,5,7-tetrakis(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)adamantane (TDA) and 1,3,5,7-tetrakis(2,4-diethoxyphenyl)adamantane (TEO). The co-crystals were obtained from solutions in dichloromethane by slow evaporation or diffusion. The implications for generating other co-crystals of two solids are briefly discussed.

Driven by the great potential of solar energy conversion this study comprises the evaluation and comparison of two different design approaches for the improvement of copper based photosensitizers. In particular, the distinction between the effects of a covalently linked and a directly fused naphthalimide unit was assessed. For this purpose, the two heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes CuNIphen (NIphen = 5-(1,8-naphthalimide)-1,10-phenanthroline) and Cubiipo (biipo = 16H-benzo-[4′,5′]-isoquinolino-[2′,1′,:1,2]-imidazo-[4,5-f]-[1,10]-phenanthroline-16-one) were prepared and compared with the novel unsubstituted reference compound Cuphen (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). Beside a comprehensive structural characterization, including two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and X-ray analysis, a combination of electrochemistry, steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy was used to determine the electrochemical and photophysical properties in detail. The nature of the excited states was further examined by (time-dependent) density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. It was found that CuNIphen exhibits a greatly enhanced absorption in the visible and a strong dependency of the excited state lifetimes on the chosen solvent. For example, the lifetime of CuNIphen extends from 0.37 µs in CH2Cl2 to 19.24 µs in MeCN, while it decreases from 128.39 to 2.6 µs in Cubiipo. Furthermore, CuNIphen has an exceptional photostability, allowing for an efficient and repetitive production of singlet oxygen with quantum yields of about 32%.

Sodium bis(perfluoropinacol)borate, NaB[O2C2(CF3)4]2 (Na-PPB), as part of the electrolyte is introduced to room temperature (RT) sodium-sulfur batteries based on a sulfurized poly(acrylonitrile) (Na-SPAN) cathode. Na-PPB was stable under atmospheric conditions for 20 days and showed no sign of degradation. Na-SPAN full cells based on a Na-PPB electrolyte demonstrated excellent oxidation stability against various current collectors and delivers a high discharge capacity of >950 mAh/gsulfur with 100 % coulombic efficiency over 500 cycles.

Abstract Background 4-Thiazolidinone ring is reported to have almost all types of biological activities. Also, it present in many marketed drugs. Results Ethyl acetoacetate reacted with phenyl isothiocyanate and ethyl chloroacetate in presence of K2CO3 and DMF to afford the thiazolidinone derivative 5. Thiazolidinone 5 reacted with dimethylformamide-dimethylacetal to afford (Z)-ethyl 2-((Z)-5-((dimethylamino) methylene)-4-oxo-3-phenylthiazolidin-2-ylidene)acetate (6). The structure of thiazolidinone 6 was elucidated from its spectral analysis and X-ray crystallography and was optimized using B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) method. The geometric parameters and NMR spectra were discussed both experimentally and theoretically. Also, the natural charges at the different atomic sites were predicted. The synthesized compounds had moderate cytotoxic activity. Conclusions An unexpected synthesis of (Z)-ethyl 2-((Z)-5-((dimethylamino)methylene)-4-oxo-3-phenylthiazolidin-2-ylidene)acetate via deacetylation mechanism. The structure was established using X-ray and spectral analysis. The geometric parameters, and NMR spectra were discussed. The synthesized compounds showed moderate anticancer activity.

This study reports on the use of pulsed electric field (PEF) as a pre-treatment step to enhance lipid extraction yield using extraction with ethanol-hexane blend on fresh oleaginous yeast Saitozyma podzolica. The yeasts were cultivated on nitrogen-depleted condition and had a lipid content of 26.4 ± 4.6% of dry weight. PEF-treatment was applied on the yeast suspension either directly after harvesting (unwashed route) or after a washing step (washed route) which induced a reduction of conductivity by a factor eight. In both cases, cell concentration was 20 g of biomass per liter of suspension. In the unwashed route, the lipid extraction efficiency increased from 7% (untreated) to 54% thanks to PEF-treatment. In case an additional washing step was added after PEF-treatment, up to 81% of the lipid content could be recovered. The washed route was even more efficient since lipid extraction yields increased from 26% (untreated) to 99% of total lipid. The energy input for the PEF-treatment never exceeded 150 kJ per liter of initial suspension. The best lipid recovery scenario was obtained using pulses of 1 μs, an electric field of 40 kV/cm and it required slightly less than 11 MJ/kgLIPID. This amount of energy can be further reduced by at least a factor five by optimizing the treatment and especially by increasing the concentration of the treated biomass. The process can be easily up-scaled and does not require any expensive handling of the biomass such as freezing or freeze-drying. These findings demonstrate the potential benefit of PEF-treatment in the downstream processing of oleaginous yeast. From a basic research point of view, the influence of conductivity on PEF energy requirements and extraction yields was examined, and results suggest a higher efficiency of PEF-treatment in terms of energy when treatment is performed at lower conductivity.

Single cell oil (SCO) produced by oleaginous yeasts is considered as a sustainable source for biodiesel and oleochemicals since its production does not compete with food or feed and high yields can be obtained from a wide variety of carbon sources, e.g., acetate or lignocellulose. Downstream processing is still costly preventing the broader application of SCO. Direct transesterification of freeze-dried biomass is widely used for analytical purposes and for biodiesel production but it is energy intensive and, therefore, expensive. Additionally, only fatty acid esters are produced limiting the subsequent applications. The harsh conditions applied during direct esterification might also damage high-value polyunsaturated fatty acids. Unfortunately, universal downstream strategies effective for all yeast species do not exist and methods have to be developed for each yeast species due to differences in cell wall composition. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate three industrially relevant cell disruption methods combined with three extraction systems for the SCO extraction of two novel, unconventional oleaginous yeasts, Saitozyma podzolica DSM 27192 and Apiotrichum porosum DSM 27194, based on cell disruption efficiency, lipid yield, and oil quality. Bead milling (BM) and high pressure homogenization (HPH) were effective cell disruption methods in contrast to sonification. By combining HPH (95% cell disruption efficiency) with ethanol-hexane-extraction 46.9 ± 4.4% lipid/CDW of S. podzolica were obtained which was 2.7 times higher than with the least suitable combination (ultrasound + Folch). A. porosum was less affected by cell disruption attempts. Here, the highest disruption efficiency was 74% after BM and the most efficient lipid recovery method was direct acidic transesterification (27.2 ± 0.5% fatty acid methyl esters/CDW) after freeze drying. The study clearly indicates cell disruption is the decisive step for SCO extraction. At disruption efficiencies of >90%, lipids can be extracted at high yields, whereas at lower cell disruption efficiencies, considerable amounts of lipids will not be accessible for extraction regardless of the solvents used. Furthermore, it was shown that hexane-ethanol which is commonly used for extraction of algal lipids is also highly efficient for yeasts.

Abstract Background The synthesis of new thiazole derivatives is very important because of their diverse biological activities. Also , many drugs containing thiazole ring in their skeletons are available in the market such as Abafungin, Acotiamide, Alagebrium, Amiphenazole, Brecanavir, Carumonam, Cefepime, and Cefmatilen. Results Ethyl cyanoacetate reacted with phenylisothiocyanate, chloroacetone, in two different basic mediums to afford the thiazole derivative 6, which reacted with dimethylformamide- dimethyl acetal in the presence of DMF to afford the unexpected thiazole derivative 11. The structures of the thiazoles 6 and 11 were optimized using B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) method. The experimentally and theoretically geometric parameters agreed very well. Also, the natural charges at the different atomic sites were predicted. HOMO and LUMO demands were discussed. The anticancer activity of the prepared compounds was evaluated and showed moderate activity. Conclusions Synthesis of novel thiazole derivatives was done. The structure was established using X-ray and spectral analysis. Optimized molecular structures at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level were investigated. Thiazole derivative 11 has more electropositive S-atom than thiazole 6. The HOMO–LUMO energy gap is lower in the former compared to the latter. The synthesized compounds showed moderate anticancer activity.

Photoacoustic imaging becomes an enabling technology that is designed for clinic diagnosis of disease. Here, Chenet al. report an imaging contrast agent—plasmonic nanoparticles caged in hydrogel subject to reversible volume change depending on temperature, which exhibits tunable photoacoustic signal.

The novel dicationic metathesis catalyst [(RuCl2(H2ITapMe2)(=CH–2-(2-PrO)-C6H4))2+ (OTf−)2] (Ru-2, H2ITapMe2 = 1,3-bis(2’,6’-dimethyl-4’-trimethylammoniumphenyl)-4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene, OTf− = CF3SO3−) based on a dicationic N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand was prepared. The reactivity was tested in ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) under biphasic conditions using a nonpolar organic solvent (toluene) and the ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [BDMIM+][BF4−]. The structure of Ru-2 was confirmed by single crystal X-ray analysis.

Ethyl 5-acetyl-4-methyl-2-(phenylamino)thiophene-3-carboxylate (2) and there derivatives 3a–c, 4, 6a–c and 9a–f were synthesized. The structure of compound 2 was deduced by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, FT-IR, MS, microanalysis, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The compound crystallized in the monoclinic system, with space group P21/c and cell coordinates a = 8.5752(16) Å, b = 21.046(4) Å, c = 8.2941(12) Å, β = 101.131(6)°, V = 1468.7(4) Å3, and Z = 4. Compounds 2, 3a–c, 4, 5a–c and 9a–f were subjected into in vitro antimicrobial activity tests. Compounds 3a and 3c were more potent than standard drug amphotericin B, showing MIC values of 23.8 ± 0.42 and 24.3 ± 0.68, respectively, against Aspergillus fumigatus while the standard drug MIC was 23.7 ± 0.1. Compound 3c was also more potent (MIC 24.8 ± 0.64) than the standard drug amphotericin B (MIC 19.7 ± 0.2) against Syncephalastrum racemosum. Compounds 4 and 9f also showed promising anti-microbial activity. Molecular modeling was performed for the most active compounds.

Wild water buffaloes (Bubalus arnee) are categorized as endangered on the IUCN Red List. With a global population of less than 4,000, the species has a very limited distribution spanning over less than 20,000 km2 in Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and Bhutan. In Nepal, Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve was designated for wild Asian buffalo; this reserve contains approximately 219 individuals, although there is no precise information on the number of pure-bred wild buffalo. The conservation of wild buffalo is of global concern; there are numerous threats due to habitat fragmentation, as well as competition, hybridization, habitat overlap, disease and parasites transmitted by domestic livestock. The reserve provides an area of only 0.80 km2 per buffalo, which is insufficient maintaining a viable population of wild buffalo. It is therefore important to identify further potential habitat and to begin translocation of some of the individuals. A Wild Buffalo Conservation Alliance can play a key role in influencing conservation strategies by conducting detailed research including feasibility studies on translocation, developing awareness, holding workshops and preparing a conservation action plan. In this way the alliance can help to increase the number of wild buffaloes and to maintain a viable population of the species.

Efforts to trap early intermediates of the gold-catalyzed phenol synthesis failed. Neither inter- nor intramolecularly offered vinyl groups, ketones or alcohols were able to intercept the gold carbenoid species. This indicates that the competing steps of the gold-catalyzed phenol synthesis are much faster than the steps of the interception reaction. In the latter the barrier of activation is higher. At the same time this explains the high tolerance of this very efficient and general reaction towards functional groups.

The capture and storage of solar energy is a promising option to overcome current energy issues. To put such systems into practice, molecular photosensitizers should be based on abundant metals and possess a strong absorption capability for visible light. Therefore, a systematic series of four novel heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes of the type [(P^P)Cu(N^N)]+ (with P^P = xantphos and N^N = different diimine ligands) has been prepared. As an essential feature, these copper photosensitizers contain an imidazole moiety at the backbone of the diimine ligand, which increases the aromatic π-system compared to phenanthroline type ligands. Moreover, 2-(4-bromophenyl)-1-phenyl-1H-imidazo-[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline was used as a starting point and modular platform for gradually extended diimine ligands. Suzuki cross-coupling was applied to introduce different kind of substituents in the back of this ligand. Afterwards, a combination of NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray analysis, cyclic voltammetry, UV/vis and emission spectroscopy was used to investigate the structural, electrochemical and photophysical properties of these compounds. As a result, a reversible reduction, strongly increased extinction coefficients and significantly redshifted absorption maxima (>20 nm) were found compared to traditional Cu(I) photosensitizers without an imidazo moiety. Moreover, these compounds show a bright emission in the solid state.

In the title compound, C18H19NO5S, the five-membered isoxazolidine ring is in a half-chair conformation, and the phenyl rings are oriented at a dihedral angle of 66.53 (3)°. In the crystal, C—H...O hydrogen bonds link the molecules into a three-dimensional supramolecular structure. A weak C—H...π interaction is also observed between adjacent molecules.

The C—N bond lengths in the guanidine unit of the title compound, C16H18N4O2, are 1.298 (2), 1.353 (2) and 1.401 (3) Å, indicating double- and single-bond character. The N—C—N angles are 115.81 (16), 118.90 (18) and 125.16 (18)°, showing a deviation of the CN3 plane from an ideal trigonal–planar geometry. In the crystal, C—H...O hydrogen bonds are observed between the methyl- and aromatic-H atoms and nitro-O atoms. One H atom of the phenyl ring and of the NMe2 group associate with the O atoms of the nitro group, giving chains along the a- and b-axis directions. Cross-linking of these two chains results in a two-dimensional network along bc.

In the title compound, C17H21N3O, the C—N bond lengths in the guanidine unit are 1.2889 (19), 1.3682 (19) and 1.408 (2) Å, indicating double- and single-bond character. The N—C—N angles are 115.10 (13), 119.29 (15) and 125.61 (14)°, showing a deviation of the CN3 plane from an ideal trigonal–planar geometry. In the crystal, non-classical C—H...O hydrogen bonds between methyl H atoms and methoxy O atoms are present, generating centrosymmetric dimers running in the [101] direction.

The title complex, [Cu4I4(C12H27P)4], crystallizes with six molecules in the unit cell and with three independent one-third molecule fragments, completed by application of the relevant symmetry operators, in the asymmetric unit. The tetranuclear copper core shows a tetrahedral geometry (site symmetry 3..). The I atoms also form a tetrahedron, with I...I distances of 4.471 (1) Å. Both tetrahedra show an orientation similar to that of a pair of self-dual platonic bodies. The edges of the I-tetrahedral structure are capped to the face centers of the Cu-tetrahedron and vice versa. The Cuface...I distances are 2.18 Å (averaged) and the Iface...Cu distances are 0.78 Å (averaged). As a geometric consequence of these properties there are eight distorted trigonal–bipyramidal polyhedra evident, wherein each trigonal face builds up the equatorial site and the opposite Cu...I positions form the axial site. As expected, the n-butyl moieties are highly flexible, resulting in large elongations of their anisotropic displacement parameters. Some C atoms of the n-butyl groups were needed to fix alternative discrete disordered positions.

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C26H28O6·2CH3OH, contains two independent methyl 6-O-trityl-α-d-glucopyranoside molecules and four methanol solvent molecules. The rings of two methyl α-d-glucopyranoside adopt chair conformations. In the crystal, extensive intra- and intermolecular O—H...O and C—H...O hydrogen bonds link the molecules into a three-dimensional supramolecular architecture.

In the title compound, C10H17IO5, the six-membered tetrahydropyran ring and the five-membered 1,3-dioxolane ring adopt sofa and envelope conformations, respectively. In the crystal, O—H...O and C—H...O hydrogen bonds link the molecules into layers nearly parallel to the bc plane.

In the title compound, C14H14INO4, the dihydropyridine ring adopts a twist conformation. In the crystal, pairs of N—H...O and C—H...O hydrogen bonds link the molecules into inversion R22(10) and R22(18) dimers, forming infinite double chains running along the c axis.

The title compound, [Ru(C7F5O2)2(C10H14)(C21H24N2)]·2CH2Cl2, is formed as an orange crystalline powder by the reaction of RuCl2(p-cymene)(IMes) and AgOCOC6F5 in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran (IMes = 1,3-dimesityl-2,3-dihydro-1H-imidazol-2-ylidene). The asymetric unit consists of two independent [Ru(C6F5COO)2(η6-p-cymene)(IMes)] complexes and four dichloromethane solvent molecules. In each complex molecule, the Ru atom presents a pseudo-octahedral environment with the p-cymene ligand occupying three facial coordination sites, while the remaining coordination positions are occupied by the O atoms of the pentafluorobenzoate ligands and by the imidazolylidene ligand.

The title compound, C10H15NO, is an amino alcohol with the hydroxy group residing on the terminal C atom. Apart from the hydroxy group and the phenyl ring, all non-H atoms are almost coplanar. In the crystal, classical O—H...N and N—H...O hydrogen bonds connect the molecules into centrosymmetric dimers [R22(12) descriptor] and tetrameric units [R44(8) descriptor] as ring motifs, consolidating a three-dimensional network.

The title compound, C16H19NO4, the hydrogenated ring adopts a twisted conformation. In the crystal, intermolecular C—H...O hydrogen bonds link the molecules into centrosymmetric R22(10) dimers. These dimers are further connected via intermolecular N—H...O hydrogen bonds, forming infinite double chains along [001].

The alkynyl bond of the title compound, C14H19NO, has a length of 1.170 (5) Å. The amide function shows a trans conformation with respect to the carbonyl group characterized by the torsion angle O—C—N—H of −176 (2)°. There is an intermolecular N—H...O hydrogen bond between the amide function and the carbonyl group. In addition, weak intermolecular hydrogen bonds stabilize the crystal structure. A comparison with a polymorphic structure shows conformational differences with regard to the orientation of the carbonyl groups with respect to the adamantyl group [O—C—C—C = 96.2 (3)° in the title compound and 123.7 (2)° in the polymorph] and the orientations of the propargyl groups in relation to the carbonyl groups [O—C—C—C = −87.7 (3) and −58.7 (2)°, respectively].

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C8H6N2O4, contains one half-molecule; a twofold rotation axis bisects the molecule. The quinoxaline ring is planar, which can be attributed to electron delocalization. In the crystal structure, intermolecular O—H...O hydrogen bonds link the molecules into R22(10) motifs, leading to layers, which interact via phenyl–phenyl interactions (C...C distances in the range 3.238–3.521 Å).
