The fragmentation of carbon monoxide dimers induced by collisions with low energy Ar$^{9+}$ ions is investigated using the COLTRIMS technique. The presence of a neighbor molecule in the dimer serves here as a diagnostic tool to probe the lifetimes of the $\rm CO^{2+}$ molecular dications resulting from the collision. The existence of metastable states with lifetimes ranging from 2~ps to 200~ns is clearly evidenced experimentally through a sequential 3-body fragmentation of the dimer, whereas fast dissociation channels are observed in a so-called concerted 3-body fragmentation process. The fast fragmentation process leads to a kinetic energy release distribution also observed in collisions with monomer CO targets. This is found in contradiction with the conclusions of a former study attributing this fast process to the perturbation induced by the neighbor molecular ion., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We report on experimental results obtained from collisions of slow highly charged Ar9+ ions with a carbon monoxide dimer (CO)2 target. A COLTRIMS setup and a Coulomb explosion imaging approach are used to reconstruct the structure of the CO dimers. The three dimensional structure is deduced from the 2-body and 3-body dissociation channels from which both the intermolecular bond length and the relative orientation of the two molecules are determined. For the 3-body channels, the experimental data are interpreted with the help of a classical model in which the trajectories of the three emitted fragments are numerically integrated. We measured the equilibrium intermolecular distance to be Re = 4.2 A. The orientation of both CO molecules with respect to the dimer axis is found to be quasi-isotropic due to the large vibrational temperature of the gas jet., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

The formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their methyl derivatives occurs mainly in the dust shells of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. The bands at 3.3 and 3.4 $\mu$m, observed in infrared emission spectra of several objects, are attributed C-H vibrational modes in aromatic and aliphatic structures, respectively. In general, the feature at 3.3 $\mu$m is more intense than the 3.4 $\mu$m. Photoionization and photodissociation processes of toluene, the precursor of methylated PAHs, were studied using synchrotron radiation at soft X-ray energies around the carbon K edge with time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Partial ion yields of a large number of ionic fragments were extracted from single and 2D-spectra, where electron-ion coincidences have revealed the doubly charged parent-molecule and several doubly charged fragments containing seven carbon atoms with considerable abundance. \textit{Ab initio} calculations based on density functional theory were performed to elucidate the chemical structure of these stable dicationic species. The survival of the dications subjected to hard inner shell ionization suggests that they could be observed in the interstellar medium, especially in regions where PAHs are detected. The ionization and destruction of toluene induced by X-rays were examined in the T Dra conditions, a carbon-rich AGB star. In this context, a minimum photodissociation radius and the half-life of toluene subjected to the incidence of the soft X-ray flux emitted from a companion white dwarf star were determined., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accept for publication in ApJ

The organic compounds HCN and C2H2, present in protoplanetary disks, may react to form precursor molecules of the nucleobases, such as the pyrimidine molecule, C4H4N2. Depending on the temperature in a given region of the disk, molecules are in the gas phase or condensed onto grain surfaces. The action of X-ray photons and MeV protons, emitted by the young central star, may lead to several physical and chemical processes in such prestellar environments. In this work we have experimentally investigated the ionization, dissociation and desorption processes of pyrimidine in the condensed and the gas phase stimulated by soft X-rays and protons, respectively. Pyrimidine was frozen at temperatures below 130 K and irradiated with X-rays at energies from 394 to 427 eV. In the gas phase experiment, a pyrimidine effusive jet at room temperature was bombarded with protons of 2.5 MeV. In both experiments, the time-of-flight mass-spectrometry technique was employed. Partial photodesorption ion yields as a function of the X-ray photon energy for ions such as C3H2+, HC3NH+ and C4H+ were determined. The experimental results were applied to conditions of the protoplanetary disk of TW Hydra star. Assuming three density profiles of molecular hydrogen, 1 x 10^6, 1 x 10^7 and 1 x 10^8 cm^-3, we determined HC3NH+ ion-production rates of the order of 10^-31 up to 10^-8 ions cm^-3 s^-1. Integrating over 1 x 10^6 yr, HC3NH^+ column density values, ranging from 3.47 x 10^9 to 1.29 x 10^13 cm^-2, were obtained as a function of the distance from central star. The optical depth is the main variable that affects ions production. In addition, computational simulations were used to determine the kinetic energies of ions desorbed from pyrimidine ice distributed between ~ 7 and 15 eV., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 6 tables

In order to simulate the effects of energetic charged particles present in the solar wind colliding with the cometary gaseous formic acid molecule (HCOOH), laboratory experiments have been performed. The absolute ionisation and dissociation cross sections for this molecule interacting with solar wind particles were measured employing fast electrons in the energy range of 0.5 to 2 keV and energetic protons with energies varying from 0.128 to 2 MeV. Despite the fact that both projectiles lead to a very similar fragmentation pattern, differences in the relative intensities of the fragments were observed. Formic acid survives about 4-5 times more to the proton beam than to the energetic electron collision.The minimum momentum transfer in the electron impact case was estimated to be 3-38% larger than the minimum momentum transfer observed with the equivelocity protons. The UV photodissociation rates and half-lives for HCOOH are roughly closer to the values obtained with energetic electrons.
