1. Impact of the coagulation of dust particles on Mars during the 2018 global dust storm

Abstract

Coagulation of particles occurs when two particles collide and stick together. In the Martian atmosphere, dust coagulation would increase the effective particle size, as small particles accrete to larger particles. Murphy et al. (1990) showed that Brownian coagulation of dust in the Martian atmosphere was not significant, due to the low dust particle mixing ratios, while Montmessin et al. (2002) and Fedorova et al. (2014) showed that it mostly involves particle radii smaller than 0.1 um. However, the effects of coagulation have never been explored in 3D, during a global dust storm, i.e. in presence of larger numbers of small particles. Here we revisit this issue by using the NASA Ames Mars Global Climate Model (MGCM) to investigate the temporal and spatial changes in dust particle sizes during the 2018 global storm due to coagulation and the overall impact of these processes on Mars' climate. Our parameterization for coagulation includes the effect of Brownian motion, Brownian diffusion enhancement, and gravitational collection. We show that Brownian motion and Brownian diffusion enhancement dominate gravitational collection. The impact of coagulation is significant during the storm, with coagulation rates increased by a factor of 10 compared to non-storm conditions. The effective particle radius can be increased by a factor of 2 due to coagulation, leading to a 20K colder atmosphere above 30 km altitude. Overall, our parameterization improves the representation of the decay phase of the storm relative to observations. The process remains significant outside the storm period if large numbers of submicron-sized particles are involved. It may be possible, in GCMs, to lift larger amounts of submicron-sized particles from the surface without excess dust buildup in the atmosphere, thus improving the agreement with some of the observations without diverging from the observed column opacities., Comment: Accepted in Icarus

4. Absolute diffuse calibration of IRAC through mid-infrared and radio study of HII regions

Abstract

We investigate the diffuse absolute calibration of the InfraRed Array Camera on the Spitzer Space Telescope at 8.0microns using a sample of 43 HII regions with a wide range of morphologies near GLON=312deg. For each region we carefully measure sky-subtracted,point-source- subtracted, areally-integrated IRAC 8.0-micron fluxes and compare these with Midcourse Space eXperiment (MSX) 8.3-micron images at two different spatial resolutions, and with radio continuum maps. We determine an accurate median ratio of IRAC 8.0-micron/MSX\8.3-micron fluxes, of 1.55+/-0.15. From robust spectral energy distributions of these regions we conclude that the present 8.0-micron diffuse calibration of the SST is 36% too high compared with the MSX validated calibration, perhaps due to scattered light inside the camera. This is an independent confirmation of the result derived for the diffuse calibration of IRAC by the Spitzer Science Center (SSC). From regression analyses we find that 843-MHz radio fluxes of HII regions and mid-infrared (MIR) fluxes are linearly related for MSX at 8.3-microns and Spitzer at 8.0 microns, confirming the earlier MSX result by Cohen & Green. The median ratio of MIR/843-MHz diffuse continuum fluxes is 600 times smaller in nonthermal than thermal regions, making it a sharp discriminant. The ratios are largely independent of morphology up to a size of ~24 arcsec. We provide homogeneous radio and MIR morphologies for all sources. MIR morphology is not uniquely related to radio structure. Compact regions may have MIR filaments and/or diffuse haloes, perhaps infrared counter- parts to weakly ionized radio haloes found around compact HII regions. Abstract

We present a new planetary nebula, first identified in images from the Australia Telescope Compact Array, although not recognized at that time. Recent observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope during the GLIMPSE Legacy program have rediscovered the object. The high-resolution radio and infrared images enable the identification of the central star or its wind, the recognition of the radio emission as thermal, and the probable presence of polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons in and around the source. These lead to the conclusion that G313.3+00.3 is a planetary nebula. This object is of particular interest because it was discovered solely through radio and mid-infrared imaging, without any optical (or near-infrared) confirmation, and acts as a proof of concept for the discovery of many more highly extinguished planetary nebulae. G313.3+00.3 is well-resolved by both the instruments with which it was identified, and suffers extreme reddening due to its location in the Scutum-Crux spiral arm., Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX (aastex), incl. 8 PostScript (eps) figures and 1 table. Abstract

Perseverance's Mastcam-Z instrument provides high-resolution stereo and multispectral images with a unique combination of spatial resolution, spatial coverage, and wavelength coverage along the rover's traverse in Jezero crater, Mars. Images reveal rocks consistent with an igneous (including volcanic and/or volcaniclastic) and/or impactite origin and limited aqueous alteration, including polygonally fractured rocks with weathered coatings; massive boulder-forming bedrock consisting of mafic silicates, ferric oxides, and/or iron-bearing alteration minerals; and coarsely layered outcrops dominated by olivine. Pyroxene dominates the iron-bearing mineralogy in the finegrained regolith, while olivine dominates the coarse-grained regolith. Solar and atmospheric imaging observations show significant intra- and intersol variations in dust optical depth and water ice clouds, as well as unique examples of boundary layer vortex action from both natural (dust devil) and Ingenuity helicopter-induced dust lifting. High-resolution stereo imaging also provides geologic context for rover operations, other instrument observations, and sample selection, characterization, and confirmation.

The newly discovered burst/pulsar source GRO J1744-28 may be considered as a quasi-periodic oscillator (QPO) with a frequency in the 1-10 milli-Hz range, plus an X-ray pulsar with a period of .47 sec (IAU Circulars 6272, 6275, 6276, 6284, 6285, 6286). Since some of the observed properties of this system do not fit with the relaxation oscillators used to interpret rapid bursters, we are investigating the applicability of models that have been used for QPO in X-ray binary systems. Noting that some features of the nonlinear dynamical model called the dripping handrail are seen in the reported observations, we compare this model with the beat-frequency modulation picture of QPO.

NOMAD is a suite of three spectrometers that will be launched in 2016 as part of the joint ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter mission. The instrument contains three channels that cover the IR and UV spectral ranges and can perform solar occultation, nadir and limb observations, to detect and map a wide variety of Martian atmospheric gases and trace species. Part I of this work described the models of the UVIS channel; in this second part, we present the optical models representing the two IR channels, SO (Solar Occultation) and LNO (Limb, Nadir and Occultation), and use them to determine signal to noise ratios (SNRs) for many expected observational cases. In solar occultation mode, both the SO and LNO channel exhibit very high SNRs >5000. SNRs of around 100 were found for the LNO channel in nadir mode, depending on the atmospheric conditions, Martian surface properties, and observation geometry., NOMAD has been made possible thanks to funding by the Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO) and financial and contractual coordination by the ESA Prodex Office. Abstract

International audience; There is a large reservoir of water ice on Mars in the polar caps, that sublimates in summer and releases water vapor. Water is then advected in the atmospheric circulation that evolves seasonally. This vapor forms clouds, frost, and can also be adsorbed in the soil. In a global study of the water cycle, water ice clouds play a key part in the martian climate. There is a need to understand better their distribution and radiative effect. The tool used in this study is the global climate model (GCM) of the Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique. It is made up of a core that computes fluid dynamics, and a physical part that gathers a number of parametrised processes. It includes tracers and the condensation and sublimation of water in the atmosphere and on the ground, allowing a study of the complete water cycle. To improve the representation of water ice clouds in the model, a new parametrisation of partial cloudiness has been implemented and will be presented. Indeed, model cells are hundreds of kilometers wide, and it is quite unrealistic to suppose that cloud coverage is always uniform in them. Furthermore, the model was quite unstable since the implementation of the radiative effect of clouds, and partial cloudiness had the effect of reducing this instability. In practice, a subgrid temperature distribution is supposed, and the temperature computed in the model is interpreted as its mean. The subgrid scale temperature distribution is simple, and its width is a free parameter. Using this distribution, the fraction of the grid cells under the water vapor condensation temperature is interpreted as the fraction of the cell in which clouds form (or cloud fraction). From these fractions at each height a total partial cloudiness (the clouds as seen from the orbit) is deduced. The radiative transfer is computed twice, for the clear area and for the cloudy one. Observing the water cycle with this new parametrisation, some differences are seen with standard runs. These changes mainly affect the aphelion cloud belt and the polar hoods. Partial cloudiness is compared to higher resolution (one per one degree) runs in which cloudiness diagnostics are done. MARCI data of cloud opacity is also used to verify the predicted water ice cloud distribution and patchiness. The aim is to understand the causes of patchiness and to validate the choice of a subgrid scale temperature distribution. There are seasonal variations, recurring patterns near major topographical features.

Abstract

International audience; The NOMAD spectrometer suite on the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter will map the composition and distribution of Mars' atmospheric trace species in unprecedented detail, fulfilling many of the scientific objectives of the joint ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter mission. The instrument is a combination of three channels, covering a spectral range from the UV to the IR, and can perform solar occultation, nadir and limb observations. In this paper, we present the science objectives of the instrument and how these objectives have influenced the design of the channels. We also discuss the expected performance of the instrument in terms of coverage and detection sensitivity.

21. Development of a Multi-skilled Craftsman Program Through Collaboration Between Industry, Technical Community College, and Four-year University.

Abstract

Engineering Technology curriculum generally provides wide spread knowledge in problem solving, management of resources, and process planning. An Industry Advisory Council for a university in Louisiana expressed the need for multi-skilled craftsman trained graduates, and worked with Engineering Technology faculty to develop an associate of science degree program, in collaboration with a local technical community college, that is focused on advanced manufacturing. This paper discusses the development of an industry-driven program on advanced manufacturing. The program is implemented as a collaborative offering by a university in Louisiana and a neighboring technical community college. The developed program combines the strengths of complementary offerings to prepare multiskilled craftsmen. The program is implemented in a work-study format, where students go to classes two days per week, and work three days per week at a manufacturing facility. The paper starts by identifying the need for multiskilled craftsman training. After that it discusses the key components for multiskilled craftsman preparation: Safety, basic electrical and mechanical maintenance, welding, and automation. These components led to putting together an 80-hour 2-year curriculum that enables graduates to obtain an associate of science degree in engineering technology along with a certificate as maintenance technician. 22. The martian dust chronicle: Eight years of reconstructed climatology from spacecraft observations

Abstract

We have reconstructed the climatology of airborne dust from Martian years (MY) 24 to 31 using multiple datasets\ud of retrieved or estimated column optical depth. The datasets are based on observations of the Martian atmosphere\ud from March 1999 to July 2013 by different orbiting instruments: the Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES)\ud on board Mars Global Surveyor, the Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) on board Mars Odyssey,\ud and the Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) on board Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). The procedure we have\ud adopted consists in gridding the available retrievals of column dust optical depth (CDOD) from TES and THEMIS\ud nadir observations, as well as the estimates of this quantity from MCS limb observations. Our gridding method\ud calculates weighted averages on a regular but likely incomplete spatial grid, using an iterative procedure with\ud weights in space, time, and retrieval uncertainty. The derived product consists of daily synoptic gridded maps of\ud CDOD at a resolution of 6 degree longitude x 3 degree latitude for MY 24-26, and 6 degree longitude x 5 degree\ud latitude for MY 27-31.\ud We have statistically analyzed the gridded maps to present an overview of the dust climatology on Mars\ud over eight years, specifically in relation to its intraseasonal and interannual variability.\ud Finally, we have produced complete daily maps of CDOD by spatially interpolating the available incomplete\ud gridded maps using a kriging method. These complete maps are used as dust scenarios in the Mars Climate\ud Database (MCD) version 5, and should be useful for many other applications.\ud The maps for the eight available Martian years are publicly available and distributed with open access, under\ud Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. Abstract

We investigate the diffuse absolute calibration of the Infrared Array Camera ( IRAC) on the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) at 8.0 μm using a sample of 43 H ii regions with a wide range of morphologies near . For each region we carefully measure sky-subtracted, point-source-subtracted, areally integrated IRAC 8.0-μm fluxes and compare these with Midcourse Space eXperiment (MSX) 8.3-μm images at two different spatial resolutions, and with radio continuum maps. We determine an accurate median ratio of IRAC 8.0-μm/MSX 8.3-μm fluxes, of 1.55 ± 0.15. From robust spectral energy distributions of these regions we conclude that the present 8.0-μm diffuse calibration of the SST is 36 per cent too high compared with the MSX validated calibration, perhaps due to scattered light inside the camera. This is an independent confirmation of the result derived for the diffuse calibration of IRAC by the Spitzer Science Centre (SSC). From regression analyses we find that 843-MHz radio fluxes of H ii regions and mid-infrared (MIR) fluxes are linearly related for MSX at 8.3 μm and Spitzer at 8.0 μm, confirming the earlier MSX result by Cohen & Green. The median ratio of MIR/843-MHz diffuse continuum fluxes is 600× smaller in non-thermal than thermal regions, making it a sharp discriminant. The ratios are largely independent of morphology up to a size of ∼24 arcmin. We provide homogeneous radio and MIR morphologies for all sources. MIR morphology is not uniquely related to radio structure. Compact regions may have MIR filaments and/or diffuse haloes, perhaps infrared counterparts to weakly ionized radio haloes found around compact H ii regions. Abstract

We have reconstructed the climatology of airborne dust from Martian years (MY) 24 to 31 using multiple datasets of retrieved or estimated column optical depth. The datasets are based on observations of the Martian atmosphere from March 1999 to July 2013 by different orbiting instruments: the Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) on board Mars Global Surveyor, the Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) on board Mars Odyssey, and the Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) on board Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). The procedure we have adopted consists in gridding the available retrievals of column dust optical depth (CDOD) from TES and THEMIS nadir observations, as well as the estimates of this quantity from MCS limb observations. Our gridding method calculates weighted averages on a regular but likely incomplete spatial grid, using an iterative procedure with weights in space, time, and retrieval uncertainty. The derived product consists of daily synoptic gridded maps of CDOD at a resolution of 6 degree longitude x 3 degree latitude for MY 24-26, and 6 degree longitude x 5 degree latitude for MY 27-31. We have statistically analyzed the gridded maps to present an overview of the dust climatology on Mars over eight years, specifically in relation to its intraseasonal and interannual variability. Finally, we have produced complete daily maps of CDOD by spatially interpolating the available incomplete gridded maps using a kriging method. These complete maps are used as dust scenarios in the Mars Climate Database (MCD) version 5, and should be useful for many other applications. Abstract

Stable isotope ratios of H, C, and O are powerful indicators of a wide variety of planetary geophysical processes, and for Mars they reveal the record of loss of its atmosphere and subsequent interactions with its surface such as carbonate formation. We report in situ measurements of the isotopic ratios of D/H and (18)O/(16)O in water and (13)C/(12)C, (18)O/(16)O, (17)O/(16)O, and (13)C(18)O/(12)C(16)O in carbon dioxide, made in the martian atmosphere at Gale Crater from the Curiosity rover using the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM)'s tunable laser spectrometer (TLS). Comparison between our measurements in the modern atmosphere and those of martian meteorites such as ALH 84001 implies that the martian reservoirs of CO2 and H2O were largely established ~4 billion years ago, but that atmospheric loss or surface interaction may be still ongoing.
