Abstract

We describe the installation, commissioning, and characterization of the new injection kicker system in the Muon $g-2$ Experiment (E989) at Fermilab, which makes a precision measurement of the muon magnetic anomaly. Three Blumlein pulsers drive each of the 1.27-m-long non-ferric kicker magnets, which reside in a storage ring vacuum (SRV) that is subjected to a 1.45 T magnetic field. The new system has been redesigned relative to Muon $g-2$'s predecessor experiment, and we present those details in this manuscript.

Abstract

The PIP-II project is a program to upgrade the Fermilab accelerator complex. The PIP-II linac includes a 2.1 MeV Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT) section that incorporates a unique chopping system to perform arbitrary, bunch-by-bunch removal of 162.5 MHz structured beam. The MEBT chopping system will consist of two identical kickers working together and a beam absorber. One design of two having been proposed has been a 200 Ohm characteristic impedance traveling wave dual-helix kicker driven with custom designed high-speed switches. This paper reports on the first performance results of one prototype kicker built, installed and tested with beam at the PIP-II Injector Test (PIP2IT) facility. The helix deflector design details are discussed. The electrical performance of the high-speed switch driver operating at 500 V bias is presented. Tests performed were chopping beam at 81.25 MHz for microseconds as well as with a truly arbitrary pattern for 550 $\mu$s bursts having a 45 MHz average switching rate and repeating at 20 Hz., Comment: 3 pp

Abstract

BACKGROUND Colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSFlR)-dependent monocytes and macrophages are key mediators of chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a major long-term complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation. The CSFIR-blocking antibody axatilimab has shown promising clinical activity in chronic GVHD. METHODS In this phase 2, multinational, pivotal, randomized study, we evaluated axatilimab at three different doses in patients with recurrent or refractory chronic GVHD. Patients were randomly assigned to receive axatilimab, administered intravenously, at a dose of 0.3 mg per kilogram of body weight every 2 weeks (0.3-mg dose group), at a dose of 1 mg per kilogram every 2 weeks (1-mg dose group), or at a dose of 3 mg per kilogram every 4 weeks (3-mg dose group). The primary end point was overall response (complete or partial response) in the first six cycles; the key secondary end point was a patient-reported decrease in chronic GVHD symptom burden, as assessed by a reduction of more than 5 points on the modified Lee Symptom Scale (range, 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating worse symptoms). The primary end point would be met if the lower bound of the 95% confidence interval exceeded 30%. RESULTS A total of 241 patients were enrolled (80 patients in the 0.3-mg dose group, 81 in the 1-mg dose group, and 80 in the 3-mg dose group). The primary end point was met in all the groups; an overall response was observed in 74% (95% confidence interval [CI], 63 to 83) of the patients in the 0.3-mg dose group, 67% (95% CI, 55 to 77) of the patients in the 1-mg dose group, and 50% (95% CI, 39 to 61) of the patients in the 3-mg dose group. A reduction of more than 5 points on the modified Lee Symptom Scale was reported in 60%, 69%, and 41% of the patients in the three dose groups, respectively. The most common adverse events were dose-dependent transient laboratory abnormalities related to CSF1R blockade. Adverse events leading to discontinuation of axatilimab occurred in 6% of the patients in the 0.3-mg dose group, 22% in the 1-mg dose group, and 18% in the 3-mg dose group. CONCLUSIONS Targeting CSFlR-dependent monocytes and macrophages with axatilimab resulted in a high incidence of response among patients with recurrent or refractory chronic GVHD. Abstract

The Fermilab Proton Improvement Plan (PIP) was formed in late 2011 to address important and necessary upgrades to the Proton Source machines (Injector line, Linac and Booster). The goal is to increase the proton flux by doubling the Booster beam cycle rate while maintaining the same intensity per cycle, the same uptime, and the same residual activation in the enclosure. For the Linac, the main focus within PIP is to address reliability. One of the main tasks is to replace the present hard-tube modulator used on the 200 MHz RF system. Plans to replace this high power system with a Marx-topology modulator, capable of providing the required waveform shaping to stabilize the accelerating gradient and compensate for beam loading, will be presented, along with development data from the prototype unit.

Abstract

The Muon (g-2) Experiment, E989 at Fermilab, will measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment a factor-of-four more precisely than was done in E821 at the Brookhaven National Laboratory AGS. The E821 result appears to be greater than the Standard-Model prediction by more than three standard deviations. When combined with expected improvement in the Standard-Model hadronic contributions, E989 should be able to determine definitively whether or not the E821 result is evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. After a review of the physics motivation and the basic technique, which will use the muon storage ring built at BNL and now relocated to Fermilab, the design of the new experiment is presented. Abstract

Understanding how listeners relate and compare pieces of music is a fundamental challenge in music research as well as for commercial applications: Today’s large-scale applications for music recommendation and exploration utilise various models for similarity prediction to satisfy users’ expectations. Perceived similarity is specific to the individual and influenced by a number of factors such as cultural background and age. Thus, adapting a generic model to human similarity data is useful for personalisation and can help to better understand such differences. This thesis presents new and state-of-the-art machine learning techniques for modelling music similarity and their first evaluation on relative music similarity data. We expand the scope for future research with methods for similarity data collection and a new dataset. In particular, our models are evaluated on their ability to “spot the odd song out” of three given songs. While a few methods are readily available, others had to be adapted for their first application to such data. We explore the potential for learning generalisable similarity measures, presenting algorithms for metrics and neural networks. A generic modelling workflow is presented and implemented. We report the first evaluation of the methods on the MagnaTagATune dataset showing learning is possible and pointing out particularities of algorithms and feature types. The best results with up to 74% performance on test sets were achieved with a combination of acoustic and cultural features, but model training proved most powerful when only acoustic information is available. To assess the generalisability of the findings, we provide a first systematic analysis of the dataset itself. We also identify a bias in standard sampling methods for cross-validation with similarity data and present a new method for unbiased evaluation, providing use cases for the different validation strategies. Furthermore, we present an online game that collects a new similarity dataset, including participant attributes such as age, location, language and music background. It is based on our extensible framework which manages storage of participant input, context information as well as selection of presented samples. The collected data enables a more specific adaptation of music similarity by including user attributes into similarity models. Distinct similarity models are learnt from geographically defined user groups in a first experiment towards the more complex task of culture-aware similarity modelling. In order to improve training of the specific models on small datasets, we implement the concept of transfer learning for music similarity models.

Abstract

A two-year Large Aperture Quadrupole (WQB) Project was completed in the summer of 2006 at Fermilab. Nine WQBs were designed, fabricated and bench-tested by the Technical Division. Seven of them were installed in the Main Injector and the other two for spares. They perform well. The aperture increase meets the design goal and the perturbation to the lattice is minimal. The machine acceptance in the injection and extraction regions is increased from 40pi to 60pi mm-mrad. Abstract

Recommendations are made for NASA/JAXA Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite Ground Validation (GV) program. This report details recommended GV site local radar products based on data from surface-based scanning radars including S-band, C-band, and X-band polarimetric and non-polarimetric radars. Three general categories of products are described: text products summarizing information on the statistical characteristics of the radar data and derived parameters, 2D products providing maps of the horizontal variability of near surface radar observed and derived parameters, and 3D products describing volumetric echo structure. Regional composites could include products based on several of the 2D and 3D single radar products. Several types of time-integrated 2D and 3D products are also recommended. Abstract

In dit artikel staat het verschoningsrecht van advocaten centraal. Nadat ratio en reikwijdte ervan zijn besproken, wordt ingegaan op enkele actuele thema’s: het verschoningsrecht van (buitenlandse) in-house-advocaten die in Nederland werken, het verschoningsrecht bij interne feitenonderzoeken en de schending door het Openbaar Ministerie van de vertrouwelijkheid van de communicatie tussen cliënt en advocaat in de geruchtmakende Box-zaak. Ten slotte wordt vooruitgeblikt op het voorstel tot modernisering van het Wetboek van Strafvordering en de wijze waarop het verschoningsrecht daarin zal worden verankerd.

Zo nu en dan blijkt de derdengeldenrekening van een advocatenkantoor oneigenlijk gebruikt te worden. In deze bijdrage wordt aandacht besteed aan de toepasselijke regels, het toezicht op het derdengeldenbeheer en het verschoningsrecht van de advocaat in relatie tot derdengelden. Ook komen enkele misstanden rond het derdengeldenbeheer aan de orde en doet de auteur een suggestie voor een betere regeling.
