The cheese-making ability, defined as the ability of milk to be transformed into cheese, is one of the criteria for the success of the manufacturing process. It is directly linked to the quality of the products and its economic importance is major. Thanks to a first FROM'MIR project (2015-2018), MIR (medium infrared spectrometry) equations for estimating the cheese-making ability of milk, established in the context of the Franche-Comté IGP/PDO, were developed for the first time in France on the basis of 420 milk from Montbéliarde breed cows on 3 scales: individual milk (250), herd milk (100), and cheese factory tank milk (70). In order to consolidate and even improve the equations developed, other data were obtained in France through collaboration with the FROM'MIR consortium. The equations concerning the cheese yield criterion and the aptitude for enzymatic coagulation were developed on all the data (n=1332). The FROM'MIR equations were consolidated with the addition of these new data. The new equations developed by expanding the data set are thus valid regardless of the context, Franche Comté PDO/IGP or not. Moreover, the equations remain efficient whatever the breed, except for Jersiaise, Abondance and Tarentaise, because of low numbers and/or extreme milk characteristics. For these last 3 breeds, the results have to be deepened by considering to analyze other milks. These results suggest that the equations can be used for other breeds than Montbéliarde for genetic evaluation purposes. The operational valorisation of these new phenotypes resulting from performance control is currently under discussion. Montbéliarde breeders already benefit from genetic selection tools thanks to the implementation of a private genetic evaluation chain developed by the FROM'MIR consortium., La « fromageabilité » des laits destinés à la transformation fromagère, définie comme l’aptitude du lait à se transformer en fromage est un des critères de réussite des procédés de fabrication. Celle-ci est en lien direct avec la qualité des produits et son importance économique est majeure. Grâce à un premier projet FROM’MIR (2015-2018), des équations MIR (spectrométrie moyen infrarouge) d'estimation de la fromageabilité des laits, établies en contexte IGP/AOP franc-comtois, ont été mises au point pour la première fois en France sur la base de 420 laits issus d’élevages de vaches en race Montbéliarde des 3 échelles : laits individuels (250), laits de troupeaux (100), laits de cuve de fromagerie (70). Afin de consolider, voire d’améliorer les équations mises au point, d’autres données ont été acquises en France au travers de collaborations avec le consortium FROM’MIR. Les équations portant sur le critère de rendement fromager et sur l’aptitude à la coagulation enzymatique ont pu être développées sur l’ensemble des données (n=1332). Les équations FROM’MIR ont été consolidées avec l’apport de ces nouvelles données. Les nouvelles équations mises au point en élargissant le jeu de données sont ainsi valables quel que soit le contexte, IGP/AOP Franche Comté ou en dehors. Par ailleurs, les équations restent performantes quelle que soit la race, excepté pour la Jersiaise, Abondance et Tarentaise, en raison de faibles effectifs et/ou de laits à caractéristiques extrêmes. Pour ces 3 dernières races, les résultats méritent d’être approfondis en envisageant d’analyser d’autres laits. Les résultats obtenus laissent présager l’utilisation de ces équations pour d’autres races que la Montbéliarde à des fins d’évaluation génétique. La valorisation opérationnelle de ces nouveaux phénotypes issus du contrôle de performances est actuellement en discussion. Les éleveurs de race Montbéliarde bénéficient déjà d’outils pour la sélection génétique grâce à la mise en place d’une chaine d’évaluation génétique privative développée par le consortium FROM’MIR.

This article will review myogenic cell transplantation for congenital and acquired diseases of skeletal muscle. There are already a number of excellent reviews on this topic, but they are mostly focused on a specific disease, muscular dystrophies and in particular Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. There are also recent reviews on cell transplantation for inflammatory myopathies, volumetric muscle loss (VML) (this usually with biomaterials), sarcopenia and sphincter incontinence, mainly urinary but also fecal. We believe it would be useful at this stage, to compare the same strategy as adopted in all these different diseases, in order to outline similarities and differences in cell source, pre-clinical models, administration route, and outcome measures. This in turn may help to understand which common or disease-specific problems have so far limited clinical success of cell transplantation in this area, especially when compared to other fields, such as epithelial cell transplantation. We also hope that this may be useful to people outside the field to get a comprehensive view in a single review. As for any cell transplantation procedure, the choice between autologous and heterologous cells is dictated by a number of criteria, such as cell availability, possibility of in vitro expansion to reach the number required, need for genetic correction for many but not necessarily all muscular dystrophies, and immune reaction, mainly to a heterologous, even if HLA-matched cells and, to a minor extent, to the therapeutic gene product, a possible antigen for the patient. Finally, induced pluripotent stem cell derivatives, that have entered clinical experimentation for other diseases, may in the future offer a bank of immune-privileged cells, available for all patients and after a genetic correction for muscular dystrophies and other myopathies.

Zusammenfassung Gegenstand und Ziel Es sollte untersucht werden, inwieweit die bakteriologische Untersuchung von Nasenschleimhautabstrichen (BU) und die histopathologische Untersuchung (HP) von Nasenschleimhautbioptaten bei Hunden mit Nasenausfluss (NAF) für das Stellen einer Diagnose von Bedeutung sind. Material und Methoden Retrospektiv wurden Patientenakten von Hunden ausgewertet, die mit dem Hauptsymptom NAF von Januar 2015 bis Dezember 2016 in der HNO-Abteilung der Klinik für Kleintiere vorgestellt wurden. Ergebnisse Die Auswertung umfasste die Daten von 85 Hunden. Auf der Basis der Ergebnisse einer Computertomografie (CT) des Kopfes, einer Rhinoskopie, der BU und der HP wurden 6 Gruppen nach den Primärursachen klassifiziert: nasale Neoplasie (24/85, 28 %), oronasale Defekte (22/85, 26 %), idiopathische chronische Rhinitis (17/85, 20 %), Fremdkörper (8/85, 10 %), sinonasale Aspergillose (7/85, 8 %) und pathologische Veränderungen des Nasenspiegels (NSP; 7/85, 8 %). Bei brachyzephalen Hunden (14/85, 17 %) stellten oronasale Defekte (8/14, 57 %) mit Abstand die häufigste Ursache für NAF dar. Eine bakterielle Infektion der Nasenschleimhaut war bei keinem Tier die Primärursache für NAF und daher nicht allein mit einem Antibiotikum zu therapieren. Dennoch waren 72 % der Tiere antibiotisch vorbehandelt. Die BU zeigte Sekundärerreger, die für keine Primärursache charakteristisch waren. Die HP erwies sich nur für die endoskopisch kontrollierte Probenentnahme von Tumorgewebe als diagnostisch. Nicht diagnostisch waren dagegen die Biopsie von Nasenschleimhaut und die Bestimmung des Entzündungstyps. Schlussfolgerungen NAF ist beim Hund häufig Folge einer gravierenden Grunderkrankung, die zu bleibenden Schäden bis hin zum Tod führen kann. Daher bedarf es einer frühzeitigen weiterführenden Diagnostik in Narkose. Die Rhinoskopie als zentrales Diagnostikum wird durch CT und Biopsie ergänzt. Eine bakteriologische Untersuchung des Nasenausflusses ermöglicht keine Diagnose der zugrunde liegenden Primärerkrankung. Klinische Relevanz Ohne Diagnose ist die Anwendung von Antibiotika bei Hunden mit NAF nicht indiziert, bei Tumorerkrankungen oder einer Pilzinfektion sogar schädlich. Bei Tumorverdacht sollten Bioptate unter endoskopischer Sicht gewonnen werden, da Blindbiopsien häufig benachbartes Gewebe erfassen und zu einer falschen Diagnose führen.

Background Even though tumours are considered to occur frequently in pet hamsters, there is only a small number of scientific reports in current literature. Methods Pathological reports from 177 hamsters were evaluated. Results Of these, 78 were male and 75 were female. Median age of affected hamsters was 12 months (range 2-34). Integumental tumours were the most common neoplasms (62%, 109/177). As far as species was known, the number of Syrian hamsters (52%, 30/58) affected by tumours seemed to be lower than the number of affected dwarf hamsters (85%, 47/55). Tumours of the hematopoietic system were the second most frequently neoplasms (17%, 30/177). Relative number of neoplasms of the endocrine system, tumours of the digestive system (1.7%, 3/177) and other tumours (4%, 7/177 each) was low. The majority of integumental tumours were epithelial (66%; 91/126). Conclusion This study aimed to analyze data from veterinary surgeries and pathological institutes about the occurrence of spontaneous tumours in Syrian hamsters and dwarf hamsters to give information about the frequency of tumours, prognosis and survival time. This is the first study about tumours in pet hamsters in Germany so far.

Retrospective evaluation of the diagnostic value of bacterial culture of nasal mucosal swabs and histopathologic assessment of nasal mucosal biopsies in dogs with nasal discharge.Medical records of dogs with the predominant clinical sign of nasal discharge that were referred to the ENT Unit of the Small Animal Department between January 2015 and December 2016 were reviewed.Data of 85 dogs were evaluated. On the basis of the results of computed tomography (CT), rhinoscopy, bacterial culture of a nasal mucosal swab and histopathologic examination of nasal mucosal biopsies, dogs were assigned to one of six groups of primary nasal diseases: nasal neoplasia (24/85, 28 %), oronasal defect (22/85, 26 %), idiopathic chronic rhinitis (17/85, 20 %), foreign body (8/85, 10 %), sinonasal aspergillosis (7/85, 8 %) and diseases of the planum nasale (7/85, 8 %). In brachycephalic dogs (14/85, 17 %), oronasal defects (8/14, 57 %) were the most frequent cause of nasal discharge. No cases of a primary bacterial infection of the nasal cavity were observed and, therefore, antibiotic treatment had not been successful. Nevertheless, 72 % of the dogs in this study had received prior antibiotic treatment. Secondary bacterial infec tions diagnosed via nasal mucosal swabs were not diagnostic for the underlying primary nasal diseases. Targeted biopsies of tumors obtained under endoscopic visualization may lead to a definitive diagnosis, whereas biopsies of the nasal mucosa and the type of the inflammatory infiltrate were not diagnostic.Nasal discharge in dogs is frequently an indicator of an underlying severe primary nasal disease possibly leading to mortality of the affected dogs. Further diagnostics under anesthesia should be performed early in the diagnostic evaluation. Rhinoscopy as the central diagnostic is supported by CT and biopsy. Bacterial culture of the nasal discharge does not provide a diagnosis for the primary nasal disease process.Without further diagnostics, antibiotic treatment of dogs presenting with nasal discharge is considered as not appropriate and can be harmful in dogs with nasal tumors or sinonasal aspergillosis. We present long-term photometric observations of the young open cluster IC 348 with a baseline time-scale of 2.4 yr. Our study was conducted with several telescopes from the Young Exoplanet Transit Initiative (YETI) network in the Bessel R band to find periodic variability of young stars. We identified 87 stars in IC 348 to be periodically variable; 33 of them were unreported before. Additionally, we detected 61 periodic non-members of which 41 are new discoveries. Our wide field of view was the key to those numerous newly found variable stars. The distribution of rotation periods in IC 348 has always been of special interest. We investigate it further with our newly detected periods but we cannot find a statistically significant bimodality. We also report the detection of a close eclipsing binary in IC 348 composed of a low-mass stellar component (M ≳ 0.09 M⊙) and a K0 pre-main-sequence star (M ≈ 2.7 M⊙). Furthermore, we discovered three detached binaries among the background stars in our field of view and confirmed the period of a fourth one.
