This paper describes the results of a NASA investigation into the benefits of micro-thrusters compared to reaction wheels on future observatory-class missions with tight pointing stability requirements. Pointing repeatability and stability (i.e., jitter) requirements are key for space telescope missions of the future. For example, managing jitter is essential to being able to “image” planets orbiting distant stars. Jitter requirements for missions in this class are difficult to meet with current reaction wheel-based architectures. The reaction wheels are typically the largest pointing disturbance on the spacecraft. Disturbances from reaction wheels can be mitigated, typically by mechanically isolating the wheels, which imposes system complexity and cost. Thrusters capable of thrust forces in the micronewton (μN) range (referred to as micro-thrusters or micronewton thrusters) have been developed to support the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission, which requires drag-free control to place a test mass in near-perfect free-fall Beyond the drag-free control application, micro-thrusters could be used as a substitute for reaction wheels or as a supplement to wheels for fine pointing control. Used in this fashion, micro-thrusters have potential for reducing the cost and technical risks of achieving demanding pointing stability performance on observatory-class missions.

Predicting, managing, controlling, and testing spacecraft line-of-sight (LoS) jitter caused by micro-vibrations due to on-board internal disturbance sources is a formidable multidisciplinary engineering task. It is especially challenging for those missions hosting high-performance (e.g., nano-radian/milli-arcsecond class), vibration-sensitive optical sensor payloads with stringent pointing stability requirements. The Nation Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) are planning technically aggressive spaceflight missions that include ultra-high-performance optical payloads with delicate, highly vibration-sensitive scientific and observational instruments. The guidance, navigation, and control community of practice will need to leverage collective experiences and document their best practices and lessons learned to address future micro-vibration challenges. To identify lessons learned and best practices the NASA Engineering & Safety Center sponsored a 2-day Spacecraft LoS Jitter Workshop in late 2019. The workshop’s goal was to provide a multidisciplinary forum to elicit deeper understanding of the issues related to addressing the spacecraft LoS jitter/micro-vibration problem. The primary objective was to identify, document, and share lessons learned, best practices, and preferred options for jitter-related analysis and test activities. Representatives from NASA, ESA, along with NASA’s industrial partners, independent consultant subject matter experts, and members of academia participated in the workshop. This paper will describe the motivation for the workshop and summarize the identified findings and recommendations.

This paper describes a new operational capability for fast attitude maneuvering that is being developed for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). The LRO hosts seven scientific instruments. For some instruments, it is necessary to per-form large off-nadir slews to collect scientific data. The accessibility of off-nadir science targets has been limited by slew rates and/or occultation, thermal and power constraints along the standard slew path. The new fast maneuver (FastMan) algorithm employs a slew path that autonomously avoids constraint violations while simultaneously minimizing the slew time. The FastMan algo-rithm will open regions of observation that were not previously feasible and improve the overall science return for LRO's extended mission. The design of an example fast maneuver for LRO's Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter that reduc-es the slew time by nearly 40% is presented. Pre-flight, ground-test, end-to-end tests are also presented to demonstrate the readiness of FastMan. This pioneer-ing work is extensible and has potential to improve the science data collection return of other NASA spacecraft, especially those observatories in extended mission phases where new applications are proposed to expand their utility.

Many concepts for future robotic Mars lander missions require landing heavier payloads than those landed to date. Mars lander architectures to date have relied on a parachute to help slow the lander; however the effectiveness of a parachute in the thin Martian atmosphere is diminished with heavier payloads unless the diameter of the parachute is increased or it is deployed at a higher Mach number, both of which are significant technical challenges. In addition the parachute can be successfully deployed only within a specific Mach number and dynamic pressure range. Targeting the entry trajectory to hit this “Mach-Q box” imposes constraints on the entry ballistic coefficient, limiting it to ~ 150-200 kg/m^2. Eliminating the parachute from the design requires descent engine ignition at supersonic speeds (Supersonic Retropropulsion, or SRP). SRP increases the propellant requirement, but also allows entry ballistic coefficients of ~600 kg/m^2 or more, with the consequence of significantly increased entry mass and landed payload mass.

Nguyễn Xuân Vinh (born January 1930 in Yên Bái, Vietnam) is a noted Vietnamese-American aerospace scientist and educator whose seminal work on the guidance, dynamics and optimal control of space vehicles and their interaction with the atmosphere has played a fundamental role in space exploration. Vinh is Professor Emeritus of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan, where he taught for nearly thirty years. Among his many publications was "Hypersonic and Planetary Entry Flight Mechanics” (1980. Vinh, N. X.; Busemann, A.; Culp, R. D. University of Michigan Press) which contains equations for hypersonic flight that came to be known as “the Vinh equations”.

A feasibility study was conducted to investigate the potential performance advantages of Supersonic Retro-Propulsion in support of future high-mass Mars robotic landing missions. A notional reference architecture for a potential future Mars Sample Return formed the basis for assuming a 4.7 m diameter SRP entry vehicle containing the Mars Ascent Vehicle element. Configuration analysis was conducted to ensure that the payload and required SRP components (including engines and propellant) fit within in the capsule volume. Optimized trajectory analysis highlighted several key performance sensitivities of SRP for ballistic coefficients of 150, 300, and 450 kg/m2. These results indicated a broad SRP ignition envelope (1-4 km altitude, 300-750 m/s velocity), as well as relatively small propellant mass fraction sensitivities to SRP thrust/weight, landing site elevation, and the application of a 4-g entry deceleration constraint (relevant for future crewed mission trajectories). Finally, mass-sizing was performed to assess sensitivities to ballistic coefficient and entry velocity, and showcased the ability of the SRP system to land payload masses on the order of twice that of MSL.

Future Mars missions will require the ability to land increasingly heavy systems with high precision, possibly at high altitude landing sites. A key obstacle in landing systems with high ballistic coefficient is Mars’ very thin atmosphere, approximately one hundred times less dense than Earth’s atmosphere. As a result, hypersonic deceleration occurs slowly throughout atmospheric entry and additional deceleration methods are required before landing. Previous landers up to and including MSL relied on Viking-heritage technologies including a Disk-Gap-Band (DGB) supersonic parachute and a blunt body aeroshell. Safe and effective deployment of a DGB parachute can be accomplished only within prescribed bounds on dynamic pressure and Mach number.2 In addition to the restrictive constraint this imposes on the entry trajectory, there is a concern that for a parachute to effectively slow an entry vehicle with a high ballistic coefficient, its diameter must be large enough to impose certification costs, modeling uncertainty, or mission risk that could be unacceptable. This has prompted investigation into alternative mission concepts based on use of supersonic retropropulsion (SRP) without a parachute. This work investigates SRP as an enabling technology for Mars EDL of high ballistic coefficient vehicles.

Ground-based optical navigation (OpNav) using pictures taken by the Naviga-tion camera on the Stardust spacecraft provided the target-relative information needed to design maneuvers during its approach to comet Tempel 1. Hardware problems, limited downlink bandwidth, and changes in the flight profile affected the OpNav picture schedule, sometimes in near-real time. The Stardust naviga-tion camera and attitude control presented challenges. Picture-processing techniques were developed during approach that included background estimation, co-addition, and co-registration. These techniques, along with adaptive picture scheduling, successfully addressed the challenges.

Mars landers to date have flown ballistic entry trajectories with no trajectory control after the final maneuver before entry. Improvements in landing accuracies (from approx.150 km from the target for Mars Pathfinder to approx.30-40 km for MER and Phoenix) have been driven by approach navigation improvements. MSL will fly the first guided-entry trajectory to Mars, further improving accuracy to approx.10-12 km from the target.

This paper presents trajectory reconstruction of the ST-9 sounding rocket experiment using the onboard IMU data and descent imagery. The raw IMU accelerometer measurements are first converted into inertial acceleration and then used in trajectory integration. The descent images are pre-processed using a map-matching algorithm and unique landmarks for each image are created. Using the converted IMU data and descent images, the result from dead-reckoning and the kinematic-fix approaches are first compared with the GPS measurements. Then, both the IMU data and landmarks are processed together using a batch least-squares filter and the position, velocity, stochastic acceleration, and camera orientation of each image are estimated. The reconstructed trajectory is compared with the GPS data and the corresponding formal uncertainties are presented. The result shows that IMU data and descent images processed with a batch filter algorithm provide the trajectory accuracy required for pin-point landing.

In this paper, we present enhancements on the powered descent guidance algorithm developed for Mars pinpoint landing. The guidance algorithm solves the powered descent minimum fuel trajectory optimization problem via a direct numerical method. Our main contribution is to formulate the trajectory optimization problem, which has nonconvex control constraints, as a finite dimensional convex optimization problem, specifically as a finite dimensional second order cone programming (SOCP) problem. SOCP is a subclass of convex programming, and there are efficient SOCP solvers with deterministic convergence properties. Hence, the resulting guidance algorithm can potentially be implemented onboard a spacecraft for real-time applications. Particularly, this paper discusses the algorithmic improvements obtained by: (i) Using an efficient approach to choose the optimal time-of-flight; (ii) Using a computationally inexpensive way to detect the feasibility/ infeasibility of the problem due to the thrust-to-weight constraint; (iii) Incorporating the rotation rate of the planet into the problem formulation; (iv) Developing additional constraints on the position and velocity to guarantee no-subsurface flight between the time samples of the temporal discretization; (v) Developing a fuel-limited targeting algorithm; (vi) Initial result on developing an onboard table lookup method to obtain almost fuel optimal solutions in real-time.

This slide presentation reviews the technology developments required to achieve pinpoint landing for a Mars landing of a future unmanned vehicle. It addresses some of the challenges to achieving accurate landing (i.e., to 2-3 kilometers) of a designated landing site. The major challenge though is to reduce the possible propellant requirement to achieve this pinpoint landing capability which requires minimizing delivery error at powered descent ignition.

Pinpoint landing (PPL) missions will deliver about 1000 kg of useful payload to the surface of Mars. Mid-to-high latitude landing site compatibility is sought which should provide the means to land at sites up to 2.5 km above Mars mean surface altitude. A dispersion and control analysis process is presented which helps to identify the effects of PPL error drivers, quantify the effect of dispersions on landing error and quantify the landing position control capability/authority along the entry path. An entry/descent/landing (EDL) profile is provided. Guided aeroshell is the baseline for all candidate Mars atmospheric entry architectures. A two-stage architecture is considered for the aerodynamic decelerator descent phase: supersonic parachute plus guided subsonic parachute or high-Mach inflatable decelerator plus guided subsonic parachute. The powered descent phase uses propulsive descent stage for soft landing and final error reduction maneuvers. Studies have found that the aeroshell entry face dispersions can be large, but closed-loop guidance can null out resulting errors to within about 2 km. Additionally, projected parachute control is inadequate to correct worst case dispersions without wind forecast data. To mitigate the problems dispersions due to atmospheric uncertainty can be reduced by providing on-board external means to measure density and winds ahead of the vehicle, higher L/D control authority options for the subsonic parachute phase can be investigated, and decelerators with control authority options for the supersonic descent phase can be examined. A navigation error analysis and wind effects summary are included.

Mars landers have been able to land only within tens to hundreds of km of a target site due to uncertainties in approach navigation, atmospheric modeling, and vehichle aerodynamics; as well as due to map-tie error and wind drift. The Mars Science Laboratory mission will improve this to 5-10 km using optical navigation and entry guidance. To achieve "pinpoint landing" (within 100m) for future missions, ways of addressing the remaining error sources must be found.

Free return trajectories in earth-Mars mission opportunities between 2000 and 2020 are identified and tradeoffs in mission design involving such trajectories are considered. A method of searching for trajectories containing no deterministic maneuvers is developed which is suitable for generating contours. Sample contours are presented for the trajectories and are used to show the variations in trajectory parameters found in the real world.

An overview of an interactive software environment for space mission design termed QUICK is presented. This stand-alone program provides a programmable FORTRAN-like calculator interface to a wide range of both built-in and user defined functions. QUICK has evolved into a general-purpose software environment that can be intrinsically and dynamically customized for a wide range of mission design applications. Specific applications are described for some space programs, e.g., the earth-Venus-Mars mission, the Cassini mission to Saturn, the Mars Observer, the Galileo Project, and the Magellan Spacecraft.
