Abstract

Nanomaterials have been widely researched for use in construction materials. Numerous studies demonstrate that nanomaterials in small quantities can significantly improve the macroscopic properties of cement paste, mortar, or concrete through various mechanisms. Nanomaterials retrieved from biomass sources have recently gained particular research interest due to remarkable structural properties and the source material’s abundance and renewability. Cellulose and chitin are the most abundant polysaccharides in nature; thus, they are candidates for nanomaterials extraction as multifunctional additives in cementitious systems. In recent years, cellulose nanomaterials in cementitious composites have been extensively investigated, but chitin nanomaterials and starch derivatives for cement and concrete are still emerging research areas. This review article starts with an overview of polysaccharide nanomaterials’ (PNMs) physicochemical properties as a result of different chemical and mechanical extraction processes. Next a brief overview of cement hydration chemistry and microstructure and the interfacial interactions between the cement and the various surface chemical functionalities of PNMs are discussed. Then, the key mechanisms governing the cement strength enhancement by PNMs, such as bridging, nucleating and filling effect, and internal curing, are described. Finally, the impacts of PNMs on other properties of the cement are discussed.

37. The Situational Judgment Test Validity Void: Describing Participant Response Processes

Abstract

Situational judgment tests (SJTs) are used to measure important components of professional competence that cannot be assessed via traditional tests of knowledge and skills. Despite their increasing popularity, there is a significant gap in the validity evidence and research on the response process to support how SJTs measure their intended constructs. This study evaluated an SJT to examine: (1) the factors that influence the response process, (2) the role of experience in the response process, (3) the role of contextual features in the response process, and (4) whether individuals attempt to identify the construct being assessed. Thirty participants--15 students and 15 pharmacists--completed a 12-item SJT designed to measure empathy. Each participant engaged in an uninterrupted think-aloud interview while they completed an SJT followed by a cognitive interview that asked specific questions about their decision-making process. Results of the qualitative and quantitative analyses suggest that the SJT response processes include the complex integration of comprehension, retrieval, judgments, and response selections. In addition, job-specific knowledge and experiences comprised a significant portion of the retrieval process. Moreover, there was evidence that SJTs are highly contextual and that item characteristics such as setting, actors, or relationships can influence the response process. There was limited evidence to suggest individuals attempt to identify the construct being assessed. In summary, this study provides a comprehensive evaluation of the response process involved in SJTs using rigorous qualitative methodologies and it contributes to foundational steps to generate the validity evidence necessary to aid in score interpretation and future research. 44. Lessons learned from a non‐traditional application process: Integrating user experiences to inform admission application design.

Abstract

Purpose: The research aim was to gather applicant expectations and perspectives with a user‐centered approach during a pilot application process for a new dental school. The goal was to inform future admissions practices at our institution and for programs broadly. Methods: The High Point University admission team developed an electronic application external to current centralized services that was launched from May to August 2022. Participants who completed the application were requested to complete an electronic survey of closed‐ and open‐ended questions about the factors influencing their application decisions, feedback about how to optimize the experience, and their overall satisfaction using a Net Promoter Score. Results: A total of 303 applicants (79% response rate) completed the survey about their application experience. The most influential reason for applying to the program was the optional Dental Admissions Test requirement (43%). Participants frequently referenced a need for a more human‐centered process focused on the candidate rather than their numerical values and that the process should be smooth, straight‐forward, short, easy, and simple. Participants requested that experiences should be weighed the most in the application process followed by letters of recommendation. Most applicants were "promoters" (68%) for the program with a Net Promoter Score of 62. Moreover, 32% and 45% rated the application process as the best or better application experience compared to other programs. Conclusion: Programs can benefit from collecting applicant's (i.e., users) opinions and feedback about their expectations and experiences to inform more user‐centered application processes.
