Abstract Background To analyse the nature of medical or technical emergency issues of ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients calling a nurse-provided emergency PD support service of a reference centre that is provided all year in the after-hours. Methods We retrospectively analysed patients’ chief complaint, urgency, resolution of and association to current PD treatment and modality directed to an on-call nurse-provided PD support service from 2015–2021 based on routinely collected health data. Calls were systematically categorized being technical/procedural-, medical-, material-related or type of correspondence. Call urgency was categorized to have “immediate consequence”, inquiry was eligible for “processing next working day” or whether there was “no need for further action”. Call outcomes were classified according to whether patients were able to initiate, resume or finalize their treatments or whether additional interventions were required. Unexpected adverse events such as patients’ acute hospitalization or need for nurses’ home visits were evaluated and quantified. Results In total 753 calls were documented. Most calls were made around 7:30 a.m. (5:00–9:00; median, 25-75th CI) and 6:30 p.m. (5:00–8:15). 645 calls were assigned to continuous ambulatory- (CAPD) or automated PD (APD). Of those, 430 calls (66.7%) had an “immediate consequence”. Of those 77% (N = 331) were technical/procedural-, 12.8% (N = 55) medical- and 6.3% (N = 27) material related issues. 4% (N = 17) were categorized as other correspondence. Issues disrupting the course of PD were identified in 413 cases. In 77.5% (N = 320) patients were able to initiate, resume or finalize their treatment after phone consultation. Last-bag exchange was used in 6.1% enabling continued therapy in 83.6%. In 35 cases a nurse visit at patients’ home or patients' visit to the practice at the earliest possible date were required, while hospitalization was required in seven medical category cases (5.4% and 1.09% of total assessed calls, respectively). Conclusion The on-call PD-nurse provides patient support for acute and imminent issues enabling them to successfully initiate, resume or finalize their prescribed treatment. Nurses triage of acute conditions facilitated rapid diagnostics and therapy. Maintaining quality PD homecare, the provision of trained personnel is indispensable. The information gathered in this study may therefore be used as a foundation to tailor educational programs for nephrology nurses and doctors to further develop their competencies in PD.

Abstract Background A multimodal approach for diagnostic tests under anesthesia is required to diagnose nasal cavity pathology (NP) reliably in dogs. Blood test results may provide clues to the suspected NP. Methods This prospective blinded study assessed 72 dogs with chronic nasal discharge due to NPs, and 10 healthy dogs as the control group (CG). NPs were diagnosed using whole-body computed tomography (CT), upper airway endoscopy, examination of nasal mucosal swabs by bacterial and fungal culture, and histopathological examination of nasal mucosa biopsies. The exclusion criteria were the presence of any additional diseases or corticosteroid pre-treatment. In consideration of these exclusion criteria, 55 dogs entered the study. Dogs were classified into benign (benign tumors, idiopathic rhinitis (IR), and others) and malignant (carcinomas and sarcomas) NP groups. Blood count and blood chemistry tests were performed. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR) were calculated and compared. Results 25 dogs with malignant NP (13 and 12 with carcinomas and sarcomas, respectively) and 30 dogs with benign NP (seven with benign tumors,13 with IR, and 10 others) were included. In general, in dogs with NP there were only slight abnormalities in complete blood count. However, PLR was significantly higher in dogs with malignant NP (carcinoma and sarcoma) than in those with benign NP and in the CG. Compared with the CG, the NLR was significantly increased in all dogs with NP, and the AGR was mild but significantly lower, except in dogs with sarcomas and benign tumors. Conclusions In dogs with nasal disease alone, there are usually no marked abnormalities in blood count. However, while mildly increased NLR and decreased AGR can be observed in almost all NPs, an increased PLR may indicate a malignant NP and can be used as an additional screening tool in dogs with nasal discharge due to nasal cavity pathology.

In this prospective blinded study, canine C-reactive protein (c-CRP), haptoglobin (HPT), and 25-hydroxyvitamin-D (25(OH)D) were investigated for their diagnostic value in 55 dogs with nasal cavity disease (ND). After comprehensive diagnostics including a culture-dependent microbiological examination (ME) of nasal swabs, 17 dogs were excluded due to additionally detected systemic diseases or steroid pre-treatment. Included were 25 dogs with malignant ND (13 carcinomas and 12 sarcomas) and 30 dogs with benign ND (7 benign tumors, 13 idiopathic rhinitis (IR), and 10 others), as well as 10 controls. In none of the 72 dogs with ND was primary bacterial rhinitis diagnosed. Although within the reference interval, compared to the controls, c-CRP was significantly higher in dogs with ND in general and in every subgroup except for benign tumors. Serum HPT concentrations were not different among groups. Compared to the controls, 25(OH)D concentrations were significantly lower (p = 0.041) in malignant ND and sarcomas (p = 0.025). Despite pre-treatment with antibiotics (40/54; 74.1%), in 23/51 (45%) dogs, the ME was positive. Cultivated bacteria did not differ significantly between nasal diseases. The serum markers were not significantly different regarding the positivity of ME. In conclusion, the investigated serum markers were not clinically useful for the reliable detection of canine ND, as was the ME. Because of the low number of dogs with IR and positive or negative ME, further studies regarding c-CRP are needed in a larger group of IR dogs without concomitant diseases to reliably evaluate its utility in IR dogs with suspected secondary bacterial nasal infection.

Summary: Background: Optimal initial tacrolimus dosing and early exposure of tacrolimus after renal transplantation is not well studied. Methods: In this open-label, 6 months, multicenter, randomized controlled, non-inferiority study, we randomly assigned 432 renal allograft recipients to receive basiliximab induction, mycophenolate and steroids and either standard prolonged-release tacrolimus (trough levels: 7–9 ng/ml; Standard Care arm), or an initial 7-day fixed 5 mg/day dose of prolonged-release tacrolimus followed by lower tacrolimus predose levels (trough levels: 5–7 ng/ml; Slow & Low arm). The primary end point was the combined incidence rate of biopsy-proven acute rejections (BPAR; including borderline), graft failure, or death at 6 months with a non-inferiority margin of 12.5%. (EudraCT-Nr: 2013-001770-19. Findings: The combined primary endpoint in the Slow & Low arm was non-inferior compared to the Standard Care arm (22.1% versus 20.7%; difference: 1.4%, 90% CI −5.5% to 8.3%). The overall rate of BPAR including borderlines was similar (Slow & Low 17.4% versus Standard Care 16.6%). Safety parameters such as delayed graft function, kidney function, donor specific HLA-antibodies, infections, or post-transplantation diabetes mellitus did not differ. Interpretation: This is the first study to show that an initial fixed dose of 5 mg per day followed by lower tacrolimus exposure is non-inferior compared to standard tacrolimus therapy and equally efficient and safe within 6 months after renal transplantation. These data suggest that therapeutic drug monitoring for prolonged release tacrolimus can be abandoned until start of the second week after transplantation. Abstract Background For the improvement of outcome after renal transplantation it is important to predict future risk of major adverse cardiac events as well as all-cause mortality. We aimed to determine the relationship of pre-transplant NT-proBNP with major adverse cardiac events and all-cause mortality after transplant in patients on the waiting-list with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction. Patients and methods We included 176 patients with end-stage renal disease and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction who received a kidney transplant. MACE was defined as myocardial infarction (ST-segment elevation [STEMI] or non-ST-segment elevation [NSTEMI]), stroke or transient ischemic attack), coronary artery disease requiring intervention or bypass or death from cardiovascular causes. Results MACE occurred in 28/176 patients. Patients with NT-proBNP levels above 4350 pg/ml had 1- and 5-year survival rates of 90.67% and 68.20%, whereas patients with NT-proBNP levels below 4350 pg/ml had 1- and 5-year survival rates of 100% and 90.48% (p 4350 pg/ml and 93.33% and 91.21% for patients with NT-proBNP

PLATELET lymphocyte ratio , *CROSS-sectional imaging , *NASAL cavity , *BIOMARKERS , *NASAL tumors , *HAPTOGLOBINS - Abstract
Simple Summary: The diagnosis of nasal cavity disease (ND) in dogs typically requires comprehensive diagnostics under general anesthesia including cross-sectional imaging and rhinoscopy. Therefore, dogs with nasal discharge are often only presented for diagnostics after weeks of symptomatic or even antibiotic therapy, even though primary bacterial rhinitis is uncommon. In a previous study, the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) differed significantly between dogs with malignant tumors and benign pathology. To further investigate the value of blood tests for diagnosis, the aim of this second part of the study was to evaluate serum markers for their diagnostic utility and whether they may be helpful in making the diagnosis of ND quickly and cost-effectively. Dogs with additional diseases detected by a whole-body CT scan and blood tests were excluded. No significant differences were found between groups for the here evaluated markers C-reactive protein, haptoglobin, and 25-hydroxyvitamin-D.

Abstract Background Residual renal function is closely linked to quality of life, morbidity and mortality in dialysis patients. Beta-trace protein (BTP), a low molecular weight protein, has been suggested as marker of residual renal function, in particular in patients on hemodialysis. We hypothesized that BTP also serves as a marker of residual renal function in pertioneal dialysis patients. Methods In this study 34 adult patients on peritoneal dialysis were included. BTP, creatinine, cystatin C and urea concentrations were analyzed simultaneously in serum and dialysate to calculate renal and peritoneal removal of the analytes. Results In peritoneal dialysis patients with residual diuresis, mean serum BTP was 8.16 mg/l (SD ± 4.75 mg/l). BTP correlated inversely with residual diuresis (rs = − 0.58, p

Spot blotch, caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana, is a growing concern for barley (Hordeum vulgare) production in most humid, temperate growing regions of the world. Under epidemic conditions, this disease can reduce yields significantly. Reduction of kernel plumpness is associated with lower malt extract and consequently grain quality. Enhanced resistance to this disease is a major goal of western Canadian two‐row barley breeding programmes; however, two‐row barley is considered to be more susceptible than six‐row barley. Plant–pathogen interactions observed for Canadian germplasm are polygenic, where quantitative breeding methods could be beneficial for the development of resistant germplasm. A germplasm panel consisting of 200 two‐row, spring barley genotypes with differential reaction to spot blotch was evaluated at Brandon, Manitoba (MB), and Melfort, Saskatchewan (SK), over eight site years. Genome‐wide association study was conducted using a 50k single‐nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) Illumina iSelect genotyping array. The most‐resistant germplasm was found to carry Midwest Six‐rowed Durable Resistant Haplotype (MSDRH) alleles at the loci located on chromosomes 1H (Rcs‐qtl‐1H‐11_10764), 3H (Rcs‐qtl‐3H‐11_10565) and 7H (Rcs‐qtl‐7H‐11_20162, Rcs5 locus), where the 3H locus was found to be the most under‐represented in Canadian germplasm. Additional marker‐trait associations within nurseries were identified on chromosomes 1H, 2H and 4H. Several of the SNP markers identified were found to be polymorphic within the Canadian two‐row germplasm panel and thus could be useful for enhancing spot blotch resistance in two‐row barley for development of resistant cultivars. Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
We present the results of new spectral diagnostic investigations applied to high-resolution long-slit spectra of the RW Aur bipolar jet obtained with HST/STIS. The spectra include the forbidden doublets [O I] 6300,6363 \AA, [S II] 6716,6731 \AA, and [N II] 6548, 6583 \AA that we utilized to determine electron density, electron temperature, hydrogen ionisation fraction, total hydrogen density, radial velocity and the mass outflow rate. We were able to extract the parameters as far as 3".9 in the red- and 2".1 in the blueshifted beam. The RW Aur jet appears to be the second densest outflow from a T Tauri star studied so far, but its other properties are quite similar to those found in other jets from young stars. The overall trend of the physical parameters along the first few arcseconds of the RW Aur jet is similar to that of HH 30 and DG Tau and this can reflect analogies in the mechanisms operating in that region, suggesting the same engine is accelerating the jets in the T Tauri stars with outflows. Our study of the RW Aur jet indicates for the first time that, despite the detected marked asymmetries in physical and kinematic properties between the two lobes, the mass outflow rates in the two lobes are similar. This appears to indicate that the central engine has constraining symmetries on both sides of the system, and that the observed asymmetries are probably due to different environmental conditions., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract Background Acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic Purpura (aTTP) is a life-threatening ultra-orphan disease with a reported annual incidence between 1.5 and 6.0 cases per million in Europe and mainly affecting otherwise young and healthy adults aged 40 years on average. The goal of this study was to assess the incidence of aTTP in Germany. Methods A systematic review was performed to determine the published evidence on the aTTP epidemiology in Germany. To obtain additional evidence on the proportion of aTTP cases within the national Thrombotic Microangiopathy (TMA) population a hospital-level study was performed, using a retrospective data collection approach. Diagnosis of aTTP was confirmed if ADAMTS13 level were

Astrophysics - Abstract
We present the results of HST/STIS and WFPC2 observations of LkHa 233 and its environment. LkHa233 is a Herbig Ae/Be star with a collimated bipolar jet. We investigate optical forbidden lines along the LkHa 233 jet to determine physical parameters of this jet (electron density n_e, hydrogen ionisation fraction x_e, electron temperature T_e, and mass density n_H). The knowledge of these parameters allows us a direct comparison of a jet from a Herbig star with those from T Tauri stars. The WFPC2 images in broad-band filters clearly show a dark lane caused either by a circumstellar disk or a dust torus. In the blueshifted lobe, n_e is close to or above the critical density for [SII] lines (2.5x10^4 cm^-3) in the first arcsecond and decreases with distance from the source. The ionisation x_e~0.2-0.6 gently rises for the first 500 AU of the flow and shows two re-ionisation events further away from the origin. The T_e varies along the flow between 10^4 K and 3x10^4 K. The (radial) outflow velocities are ~ 80-160 km s^(-1), and they appear to increase with distance from the source. In the redshifted lobe, T_e, n_e, x_e, and n_H are all lower than in the blueshifted lobe, but have the same order of magnitude. All these derived parameters are just beyond or at the upper limits of those observed for classical T Tauri star jets. This may indicate that the flows from the higher mass Herbig stars are indeed scaled-up examples of the same phenomenon as in T Tauri stars., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomy and Astrophysics

Astrophysics - Abstract
We present survey results which suggest rotation signatures at the base of T-Tauri jets. Observations were conducted with the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph at optical and near ultraviolet wavelengths (NUV). Results are presented for the approaching jet from DG Tau, CW Tau, HH 30 and the bipolar jet from TH 28. Systematic asymmetries in Doppler shift were detected across the jet, within 100 AU from the star. At optical wavelengths, radial velocity differences were typically 10 to 25 (+/-5) km/s, while differences in the NUV range were consistently lower at typically 10 (+/-5) km/s. Results are interpreted as possible rotation signatures. Importantly, there is agreement between the optical and NUV results for DG Tau. Under the assumption of steady magnetocentrifugal acceleration, the survey results lead to estimates for the distance of the jet footpoint from the star, and give values consistent with earlier studies. In the case of DG Tau, for example, we see that the higher velocity component appears to be launched from a distance of 0.2 to 0.5 AU from the star along the disk plane, while the lower velocity component appears to trace a wider part of the jet launched from as far as 1.9 AU. The results for the other targets are similar. Therefore, if indeed the detected Doppler gradients trace rotation within the jet then, under the assumption of steady MHD ejection, the derived footpoint radii support the existence of magnetized disk winds. However, since we do not resolved the innermost layers of the flow, we cannot exclude the possibility that there also exists an X-wind or stellar wind component., Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, accepted by The Astrophysical Journal

Astrophysics - Abstract
EK Dra (HD 129333) is a young, active, nearby star that is orbited by a low mass companion. By combining new speckle observations with old and new radial velocity measurements we find that the orbit is highly eccentric with e=0.82\pm0.03, and we derive the true masses of both components. The masses are $0.9\pm0.1 {\rm M}_\odot$ and $0.5\pm0.1 {\rm M}_\odot$, for the primary and secondary, respectively. From high resolution spectra we derive a new $T_{\rm eff}$ of $5700\pm70$ K, and a $\log g$ of $4.37\pm0.10$, which is different to previous estimates. However, the new spectroscopic distance differs by only 5.8% to the distance derived by parallax measurement of the Hipparcos satellite and thus the stellar parameters are presumably more realistic than older determinations. We derive a somewhat higher value for the metallicity of $[Fe/H]=-0.16\pm0.07$. EK Dra turns out to be one of the few nearby young stars which will evolve similar to the sun. The precise radial velocity measurements taken in the course of this program also allows us to shed more light on to the activity of this star. In 2001 and 2002 we find a periodic signal of the radial velocity variations with a period of $2.767\pm0.005$ days which we interpret as the rotation period. This signal vanishes in 2003. However the signal can be recovered if only the spectra in which the photospheric lines are asymmetric are used. On the other hand, we do not find a close correlation between the asymmetry of photospheric lines and the radial velocity., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, accepted by A&A

Astrophysics - Abstract
Using STIS on board the HST we have obtained a spectroscopic map of the bipolar jet from RW Aur. We find signatures of rotation within the first 300 AU of the jet (1.''5 from RW Aur). Both lobes rotate in the same direction (i.e. with different helicities). Toroidal velocities are in the range 5 - 30 km/s at 20 (30) AU from the symmetry axis in the blueshifted (redshifted) lobe, in line with other STIS observations and with theoretical simulations. The sense of rotation is anti-clockwise looking from the tip of the blue lobe down to the star. Rotation is more evident in the [OI] and [NII] lines and at the largest sampled distance from the axis. We derive that the mass ejected in the observed part of the outflow is accelerated from a region in the disk within about 0.5 (1.6) AU from the star for the blue (red) lobe. We estimate that the angular momentum transport rate of the jet can be two thirds or more of the estimated rate transported through the relevant portion of the disk. The magnetic lever arm (ratio rA/r0 between the Alfv`en and footpoint radii) is between 3.5 and 4.6 (accuracy 20-25%), or, the ejection index $\xi$ = d ln($\dot{M}_acc$) / d r is in the range 0.025 - 0.046 (same accuracy). These values are in the range predicted by the models, and suggest that some heating must be provided at the base of the flow. We also derive the ratio B_phi / B_p of the toroidal and poloidal components of the magnetic field at the observed location. B_phi / B_p = 3.8 +- 1.1 at 30 AU from the axis in the red lobe and -8.9 +- 2.7 at 20 AU from the axis in the blue lobe. The toroidal component is dominant, as predicted by magnetic collimation models., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A

Astrophysics - Abstract
We report findings from the first set of data in a current survey to establish conclusively whether jets from young stars rotate. We observed the bi-polar jets from the T Tauri stars TH28 and RW Aur, and the blue-shifted jet from T Tauri star LkH$\alpha$321, using the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS). Forbidden emission lines (FELs) show distinct and systematic velocity asymmetries of 10 -- 25 (+/- 5) km/s at a distance of 0".3 from the source, representing a (projected) distance of ~ 40 AU along the jet in the case of RW Aur, ~ 50 AU for TH28, and 165 AU in the case of LkH$\alpha$321. These velocity asymmetries are interpreted as rotation in the initial portion of the jet where it is accelerated and collimated. For the bi-polar jets, both lobes appear to rotate in the same direction. Values obtained were in agreement with the predictions of MHD disk-wind models (Bacciotti et al 2002, Anderson et al 2003, Dougados et al 2003, Pesenti et al 2003). Finally, we determine, from derived toroidal and poloidal velocities, values for the distance from the central axis of the footpoint for the jet's low velocity component of ~ 0.5 - 2 AU, consistent with the models of magneto-centrifugal launching (Anderson et al 2003)., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, Accepted by ApJ

33. A fourth component in the young multiple system V 773 Tau

Astrophysics - Abstract
I report on a new component in the pre-main sequence multiple system V 773 Tauri. This second visual companion, V 773 Tau C, with a projected separation of about 0."2 has been detected using speckle interferometry in the near-infrared. Repeated observations from 1996 to 2002 show significant orbital motion and thus confirm the character of the new companion as a gravitationally bound star. Together with the two components of the spectroscopic binary V 773 Tau A and the previously known visual companion V 773 Tau B, the V 773 Tau system appears as a young "mini-cluster" of four T Tauri stars within a sphere of a radius less than 100 AU. V 773 Tau, A, B and C form a triple system that is not hierarchic, but is apparently stable despite of this. The brightness of V 773 Tau C has probably increased over the last years, which may explain its non-detection in previous binary surveys., Comment: Accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics, 5 pages, 2 figures

Astrophysics - Abstract
Based on 14 data points obtained with near-infrared speckle interferometry and covering an almost entire revolution, we present a first visual orbit for the low-mass binary system Gliese 22 AC. The quality of the orbit is largely improved with respect to previous astrometric solutions. The dynamical system mass is 0.592 +- 0.065 solar masses, where the largest part of the error is due to the Hipparcos parallax. A comparison of this dynamical mass with mass-luminosity relations on the lower main sequence and theoretical evolutionary models for low-mass objects shows that both probably underestimate the masses of M dwarfs. A mass estimate for the companion Gliese 22 C indicates that this object is a very low-mass star with a mass close to the hydrogen burning mass limit., Comment: Accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics, 6 pages, 2 figures

Astrophysics - Abstract
We have observed the bipolar jet from RW Aur A with STIS on board the HST. After continuum subtraction, morphological and kinematic properties of this outflow can be traced to within 0."1 from the source in forbidden emission lines. The jet appears well collimated, with typical FWHMs of 20 to 30 AU in the first 2" and surprisingly does not show a separate low-velocity component in contrast to earlier observations. The systemic radial outflow velocity of the blueshifted lobe is typically 50% larger than that of the redshifted one with a velocity difference of about 65 km/s. Although such asymmetries have been seen before on larger scales, our high spatial resolution observations suggest that they are intrinsic to the "central engine" rather than effects of the star's immediate environment. Temporal variations of the bipolar jet's outflow velocities appear to occur on timescales of a few years. They have combined to produce a 55% increase in the velocity asymmetry between the two lobes over the past decade. In the red lobe estimated mass flux and momentum flux values are around one half and one third of those for the blue lobe, respectively. The mass outflow to mass accretion rate is 0.05, the former being measured at a distance of 0."35 from the source., Comment: Accepted by ApJ, 16 pages, 5 figures

Astrophysics - Abstract
We present the results of HST WFPC2 observations of FS Tau and its environment obtained in the narrow-band emission line filters H alpha and [S II] (lambda = 6716,6731 Angstrom). Based on these data the morphology of line emission within this region can be studied on a size scale of 0.1" for the first time. Despite the fact that FS Tau A has strong forbidden emission lines, there is no evidence for extended emission at these wavelengths beyond 0.5" from the components of this close T Tauri binary system. In the FS Tau B outflow interesting morphological properties can be studied at high spatial resolution. In this jet we find a structure where circular or elliptical jet knots are correlated with minima of the jet width. The overall width of this jet decreases with distance from the source. The FS Tau B jet is thus a rare example of a jet which may be recollimated far away from its source. The jet is much more prominent in H alpha than in [S II], while the counterjet shows the opposite behaviour. The line ratio H alpha/[S II] increases with lateral distance from the jet axis which is indicative of entrainment of ambient material., Comment: Accepted by the Astrophysical Journal. 12 pages, 3 figures

Astrophysics - Abstract
Using near-infrared speckle interferometry we have obtained resolved JHK-photometry for the components of 58 young binary systems. From these measurements, combined with other data taken from literature, we derive masses and particularly mass ratios of the components. We use the J-magnitude as an indicator for the stellar luminosity and assign the optical spectral type of the system to the primary. On the assumption that the components within a binary are coeval we can then place also the secondaries into the HRD and derive masses and mass ratios for both components by comparison with different sets of current theoretical pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks. The resulting distribution of mass ratios is comparatively flat for M(2)/M(1) > 0.2, but depends on assumed evolutionary tracks. The mass ratio is neither correlated with the primary's mass or the components' separation. These findings are in line with the assumption that for most multiple systems in T associations the components' masses are principally determined by fragmentation during formation and not by the following accretion processes. Only very few unusually red objects were newly found among the detected companions. This finding shows that the observed overabundance of binaries in the Taurus-Auriga association compared to nearby main sequence stars should be real and not the outcome of observational biases related to infrared observing., Comment: accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics, contains extensive tables and figures that will only be published electronically at CDS (in total: 34 pages, 11 figures)

Astrophysics - Abstract
We have monitored the angularly resolved near infrared and 3.1 micron ice-band flux of the components of the young binary Haro 6-10 on 23 occasions during the years 1988 to 2000. Our observations reveal that both the visible star Haro 6-10 (Haro 6-10S) and its infrared companion (Haro 6-10N) show significant variation in flux on time scales as short as a month. The substantial flux decrease of Haro 6-10S over the last four years carries the reddening signature of increased extinction. However, a comparable K-band flux increase observed in the IRC is associated with a dimming in the H-band and cannot be explained by lower extinction. Absorption in the 3.1 micron water-ice feature was always greater towards the IRC during our observations, indicating a larger amount of obscuring material along its line of sight. We detect variability in the ice-band absorption towards Haro 6-10S and Haro 6-10N, significant at the 3.5 sigma and 2.0 sigma levels, respectively., Comment: 8 pages, 6 Figures, Accepted for Publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Astrophysics - Abstract
Using speckle-interferometry we have carried out repeated measurements of relative positions for the components of 34 T Tauri binary systems. The projected separation of these components is low enough that orbital motion is expected to be observable within a few years. In most cases orbital motion has indeed been detected. The observational data is discussed in a manner similar to Ghez et al. (1995). However, we extend their study to a larger number of objects and a much longer timespan. The database presented in this paper is valuable for future visible orbit determinations. It will yield empirical masses for T Tauri stars that now are only poorly known. The available data is however not sufficient to do this at the present time. Instead, we use short series of orbital data and statistical distributions of orbital parameters to derive an average system mass that is independent of theoretical assumptions about the physics of PMS stars. For our sample this mass is 2.0 solar masses and thus in the order of magnitude one expects for the mass sum of two T Tauri stars. It is also comparable to mass estimates obtained for the same systems using theoretical PMS evolutionary models., Comment: Accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics

Astrophysics - Abstract
We report lunar occultation (LO) and speckle interferometry observations of Haro 6-37, all carried out at lambda=2.2 microns. The main finding is the discovery of a new close companion by LO, subsequently confirmed by speckle. The two techniques yield values in excellent agreement, with 0.331 arcseconds and 181 degrees for the separation and position angle respectively. Additionally, the LO data show evidence of what might be interpreted as scattered light from the inner part of the dust disk which is known to exist around Haro 6-37 from mm-radio observations (Osterloh & Beckwith 1995). However this last conclusion is subject to some uncertainty because of possible contamination of the signal during data acquisition. LO and speckle results are in good agreement also for what concerns the brightness ratio of the newly found companion to the main component, R=0.10 or Delta K=2.5. We discuss the possible implications on the general picture of Haro 6-37, in particular for what concerns the ages of the components and the dust disk., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures accepted for publication in A&A

Objectives: Identifying patterns of associations between self-rated health (SRH) and socioeconomic factors in male and female former athletes and non-athletes, and verifying if these associations are modified by the factors which characterize former athletes` past sport participation. Methods: The data used came from Former Athletes' Lifestyle Project conducted among former athletes (N=351) and non-athletes (N=466) aged 18-66 years randomly selected from three regions of Poland. Anonymous questionnaires regarding SRH, socioeconomic variable, and factors which characterize former athletes’ past sport participations (competitive sports training experience, sport level achieved in the past, and period of time since the end of sports career) were used. SRH was categorized as negative (average, poor or very poor) and positive (good or very good). Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to calculate the odds ratios of negative SRH after adjusting for socioeconomic and sports characteristics. Results: Groups former athletes and non-athletes exhibited different patterns of relationships between SRH and socioeconomic variables. In both male and female non-athletes the higher risks of negative SRH were significantly associated with low socioeconomic position. Short time from ending sport careers significantly reduced the risk of negative SRH in both male and female former athlete. Conclusions: Among men and women former participation in competitive sports limits the adverse effect of socioeconomic status on SRH. For this reason it appears to be appropriate to incorporate popularization of competitive sport as one of the strategies of public health indirectly oriented towards reduction in socioeconomic inequalities in health.

Beta Trace Protein (BTP) is a biomarker for residual kidney function which has been linked to cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in haemodialysis patients. Following renal transplantation, recipients remain at increased risk for cardiovascular events compared with the general population. We aimed to determine the relationship of pre-transplant BTP to major adverse cardiac events (MACE) in patients following kidney transplantation. We included 384 patients with end-stage renal disease who received a kidney transplant. MACE was defined as myocardial infarction (ST-segment elevation or non-ST-segment elevation, stroke or transient ischemic attack), coronary artery disease requiring intervention or bypass or death for cardiovascular reason. The association between pre-transplant serum BTP concentration and post-transplant MACE was evaluated by Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses.Post-transplant MACE occurred in 70/384 patients. Pre-transplant BTP was significantly higher in patients with post-transplant MACE (14.36 ± 5.73 mg/l vs. 11.26 ± 5.11 mg/l; p .01). Next to smoking (HR 1.81), age 56.38 years (HR 1.97) and pre-existing coronary heart disease (HR 8.23), BTP above the cut off value of 12.7 mg/l was confirmed as independent risk factor for MACE (HR 2.02, all p .05). MACE-free survival inversely correlated with pre-transplant BTP levels.Pre-transplant serum BTP concentration may identify renal transplant recipients with higher risk of post-transplant MACE.

Background We previously reported excellent efficacy and improved safety aspects of rapid steroid withdrawal (RSWD) in the randomized controlled 1-year "Harmony" trial with 587 predominantly deceased-donor kidney transplant recipients randomized either to basiliximab or rabbit antithymocyte globulin induction therapy and compared with standard immunosuppressive therapy consisting of basiliximab, low tacrolimus once daily, mycophenolate mofetil and corticosteroids. Methods The 5-year post-trial follow-up (FU) data were obtained in an observational manner at a 3- and a 5-year visit only for those Harmony patients who consented to participate and covered clinical events that occurred from the second year onwards. Results Biopsy-proven acute rejection and death-censored graft loss rates remained low and independent of RSWD. Rapid steroid withdrawal was an independent positive factor for patient survival (adjusted hazard ratio 0.554, 95% confidence interval 0.314–0.976; P = .041). The reduced incidence of post-transplantation diabetes mellitus in RSWD patients during the original 1-year study period was not compensated by later incidences during FU. Incidences of other important outcome parameters such as opportunistic infections, malignancies, cardiovascular morbidity/risk factors, donor-specific antibody formation or kidney function did not differ during FU period. Conclusions With all the limitations of a post-trial FU study, the Harmony FU data confirm excellent efficacy and beneficial safety aspects of RSWD under modern immunosuppressive therapy over the course of 5 years after kidney transplantation in an immunologically low-risk, elderly population of Caucasian kidney transplant recipients. Hypermobility syndrome is an inherited dysfunction in the structure of connective tissues. It is manifested by disturbances in the proportion of collagen. The main symptoms of this syndrome are: laxity joint capsules and ligaments, range Increasing the mobility of joints, pain and many disorders and Functioning of organs and systems containing connective tissue. Improperly selected and dosed physical effort in patients with hypermobility syndrome can lead a frequent injuries and overload the musculoskeletal system. The consequence will be early degenerative changes and disability.
