In this article, we forecast employment growth for Germany with data for the period from November 2008 to November 2015. Hutter and Weber (2015) introduced an innovative unemployment indicator and evaluated the performance of several leading indicators, including the Ifo Employment Barometer (IEB), to predict unemployment changes. Since the IEB focuses on employment growth instead of unemployment developments, we mirror the study by Hutter and Weber (2015). It turns out that in our case, and in contrast to their article, the IEB outperforms their newly developed indicator. Additionally, consumers’ unemployment expectations and hard data such as new orders exhibit a high forecasting accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

ZIMET 3164 inhibited the growth of sarcoma 180 P, sarcoma 180 G, and Walker 256 carcinosarcoma, but was unable to prolong the survival time of mice bearing Ehrlich ascites carcinoma or the leukaemias L 1210 and LAJ I to a worthwhile extent. The primary and secondary haemagglutinin formation to xenogenic red blood cells and immunological memory were significantly suppressed in mice. The drug exerted maximum effect when given on days −2 to +2 relative to antigenic stimulus. Administration exclusively prior to immunization induced only moderate immunosuppression while injection afterwards failed to affect the primary response at all, suggesting that the drug interferes with the afferent limb of immune response. We compare Covid-related working papers in economics to non-Covid-related working papers in four dimensions. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act constitutes the largest change to the US tax system since the 1980s and thoroughly alters the way in which multinational companies are taxed. Current assessments on the reform's international impact vary widely. This article sheds light on the tax reform's expected effects on other countries. We first use representative German business survey data to analyze the impact of the reform on German firms. Many firms with substantial US revenues or capacities in the USA intend to expand US investment in response to the reform, in particular large firms and manufacturing companies. The effects on investment in Germany are ambiguous: While some firms substitute between investment locations, others expand in both countries. We subsequently extend our analysis to a global level using worldwide survey data. In research into higher education, the evaluation of completion and dropout rates has generated a steady stream of interest for decades. While most studies only calculate quotes using student and graduate numbers for both phenomena, we propose to additionally consider the budget available to universities. We transfer the idea of the excellence shift indicator [1] from the research to the teaching area, in particular to the completion rate of educational entities. The graduation shift shows the institutions' ability to produce graduates as measured against their basic academic teaching efficiency. It is an important advantage of the graduation shift that it avoids the well-known heterogeneity problem in efficiency measurements. Our study is based on German universities of applied science. Given their politically determined focus on education, this dataset is well-suited for introducing and evaluating the graduation shift. Using a comprehensive dataset covering the years 2008 to 2013, we show that the graduation shift produces results, which correlate closely with the results of the well-known graduation rate and standard Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Compared to the graduation rate, the graduation shift is preferable because it allows to take the budget of institutions into account. Compared to the DEA, the computation of the graduation shift is easy, the results are robust, and non-economists can understand them results. By means of four murine models, the authors demonstrated in vivo that 1,4-benzoquinone guanylhydrazone thiosemicarbazone (1), which is known to be antimicrobially active, and its hydrochloride (2) exert an antineoplastic effect. In leukaemia P 388 and leukaemia L 1210 both compounds had a curative action already after four oral administrations. The "cured" animals were resistant or cross-resistant to further transmissions of leukaemia. The resistance was transmissible by splenocytes.

A series of carbonyl derivatives of tilorone was synthetized by reaction with appropriate amino compounds, mainly hydrazines and hydrazides. The condensation products obtained were tested for cancerostatic activity against the murine leucaemia L 1210 and the Walker carcinosarcoma of the rat. Only three of the substances under investigation (1a, 5, 13) proved active against the Walker carcinosarcoma, one of which (5) being comparable to tilorone. No activity against L 1210 was observed, even tilorone exerted no effect. The reduction in activity against the Walker carcinosarcoma which resulted from the carbonyl substitution might be caused by a decrease in the ability to intercalate into DNA.

Eight of fifteen Fluorenone-Azomethines without alkylating function have been found effective against the leukemia L 1210. Little modifications concerning the structure of the compounds caused loss of effectiveness. It seems remarkably that one corresponding derivative with a nitrogen mustard group (4) was ineffective. Correlations between chemical structure and biological effect have not yet been found.

A model for judgement of lymphatic spread and metastasis formation is described, using intracutaneous inoculation of tumour cells (Ehrlich ascites carcinoma). The model represents an economic method for testing the effects of anticancer agents on disseminating tumour cells as well as on established tumours metastases in regional lymph nodes.

Lambdamycin-producing strains were detected by means of the BIP test method. The isolation technique and the physicochemical and biological properties of lambdamycin, an antibiotic produced by Streptomyces glaucoachromogenes, are described. Lambdamycin is a yellow-green pigment of the chromoglycoside type. Digitalose and fucose are the sugar components. The physicochemical properties of lambdamycin resemble those of chartreusin. However, the known biological activity is different. The antibiotic can be isolated from culture filtrates and from the mycelium by extraction with lower aliphatic alcohols. It can be purified by gel filtration methods. Lambdamycin displays antimicrobial activity, particularly against grampositive bacteria. Strains which produce enzymes inactivating different commercial antibiotics are also inhibited. Moreover, lambdamycin shows antiviral activity, as well as cancerostatic and ergotropic action in vitro and in vivo. The acute LD50 of lambdamycin in mice after 21 days was greater than 125 mg/kg when administered intraperitoneally.

In water or dimethyl sulfoxide solutions cis-platinum is subject of time depending solvolytic reactions leading to compounds with different biological effectivity. Whereas the inactivation of vaccinia, vesicular stomatitis and adeno virus type 5 was not changed if dimethyl sulfoxide or dimethyl formamide instead of destilled water were used as solvents, long time stored solutions of cis-platinum in dimethyl sulfoxide were tolerated by cells cultivated in vitro in 8-25 times higher concentrations in comparison with a freshly solved preparation. Their antiviral effectivity was maintained. On the other hand experiments with mice showed that simultaneously with the decrease of toxicity of an aged cis-platinum solution in DMSO also its antileukemic activity disappeared. In a 5 weeks old cis-platinum solution in destilled water antitumor activity was preserved in spite of enhanced toxicity.

It was found, that (+)cis-3,4-dimethoxy-10,11-dimethyl-6,6aR,7,8,13, 13aS-hexahydro-[I]-benzopyrano-[4,3-b]-1,5-benzodiazepine (ZIMET 54/79) increased the life span (ILS) of C57BL/6/Jena mice suffering from transplanted B16 melanoma (ip.) by 57% (9 times ip. 250 mg/kg) and 90% (9 times ip. 500 mg/kg) respectively. In B6D2F1/Bln mice with transplanted B16 melanoma there was no ILS registered when a dose of 100-500 mg/kg was applied (ip. and p.o.). Using the Harding Passey melanoma (B6D2F1/Bln mice) only 59% tumour volume inhibition (500 mg/kg) without ILS was obtained. Finally ZIMET 54/79 tested on AMel 3 hamster melanoma (strain Z3) decreased the mean tumour volume by 72% (125 mg/kg).
