Abstract

Flares are known to play an important role for the evolution of the atmospheres of young planets. In order to understand the evolution of planets, it is thus important to study the flare-activity of young stars. This is particularly the case for young M-stars, because they are very active. We study photometrically and spectroscopically the highly active M-star 2MASS J16111534-1757214. We show that it is a member of the Upper Sco OB association, which has an age of 5-10 Myrs. We also re-evaluate the status of other bona-fide M-stars in this region and identify 42 members. Analyzing the K2-light curves, we find that 2MASS J16111534-1757214 has, on average, one super-flare with E > 1.0E35 erg every 620 hours, and one with E >1.0E34 erg every 52 hours. Although this is the most active M-star in the Upper Sco association, the power-law index of its flare-distribution is similar to that of other M-stars in this region. 2MASS J16111534-1757214 as well as other M-stars in this region show a broken power-law distribution in the flare-frequency diagram. Flares larger than E >3E34 erg have a power-law index beta=-1.3+/-0.1 and flares smaller than that beta=-0.8+/-0.1. We furthermore conclude that the flare-energy distribution for young M-stars is not that different from solar-like stars., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

Using the Kepler K2 data, we studied the flare-activity of young K-and M-stars in the Upper Sco region and found that they have 10000 to 80000 times as many super-flares with E> 5E34 erg than solar like stars. The power-law index for flares is $N/dE~E^-1.2 for K stars, N/dE~E^-1.4 for early M-star and dN/dE~E^-1.3 for late M stars, which is about the same as that of the Sun. Abstract

We present the results of our spectroscopic monitoring campaign of $\zeta$ Oph, carried out at the University observatory Jena with the spectrograph FLECHAS between July 2015 and September 2016. The main aim of the project is to determine the radial velocity of the star precisely, as a wide range of radial velocity measurements of $\zeta$ Oph are given in the literature. Beside the proper motion and parallax, the radial velocity is an important input parameter for the calculation of the space motion of the star. $\zeta$ Oph is considered to be a runaway star and potential former companion of the progenitor star of the pulsar PSRJ1932+1059, which both may have been located in a binary system and were then released during a supernova explosion about 1 Myr ago in the Upper Scorpius OB association. For the calculation that the pulsar and $\zeta$ Oph could have been at the same place, a radial velocity of $-$9.0 km/s for $\zeta$ Oph was used in the literature. By analysing the hydrogen and helium lines in 48 FLECHAS spectra, we determined the radial velocity of $\zeta$ Oph to be 12.2$\pm$3.3 km/s and the projected rotational velocity to 432$\pm$16 km/s with no indication for variability., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in AN

Abstract

Since early 2015 a new radial velocity monitoring campaign is going on at the University Observatory Jena. The aim of this project is to obtain current radial velocity measurements of selected single-lined spectroscopic binary systems, to redetermine and/or constrain their orbital solutions. In this paper we characterize the properties of the target sample of the project, describe the spectroscopic observations, the data-reduction and analysis and present the first results of the project, taken with the fiber-linked astronomical spectrograph FLECHAS. We present 391 radial velocity measurements of eight spectroscopic binaries, which were taken within an epoch difference of 1.6 years. These radial velocities were used to determine the spectroscopic orbital elements of the observed binary systems, which exhibit orbital periods in the range between nearly one up to several dozens of days. We could constrain the orbital solutions of seven of these binary systems, and redetermine the orbital solution of phi Dra, whose orbit exhibits >4 times longer orbital period and is more eccentric than given in the 9th Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits., Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, 13 tables, accepted for publication in AN

Abstract

The goal of this report is to analyse the incidence of genital tumours in cattle referred to the Clinic between 2016 and 2019 and to describe the outcome after the surgical tumour resection. All cattle with a confirmed diagnosis of a genital tumour (n = 3) were included in the study. The breed, age, tumour localisation and type of treatment were considered. Telephone interviews were used to ask owners about the integration of the cows into the herd after discharge, the survival, the reason for leaving the herd, wound complications and tumour recurrence. Three genital tumours including a vaginal fibrosarcoma, vaginal leiomyosarcoma and luteoma were diagnosed. A tumour recurrence or metastasis did not occur. In conclusion, the tumour resection was successful in all three cases. To our knowledge, this is the first clinical description of a cow with a luteoma.

Abstract

Ambient air temperature and temperature variability are supposed to influence blood pressure (BP); however, findings are inconsistent. We examined the effects of short-term changes in ambient temperature and temperature variability on systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and pulse pressure (PP) in a repeated-measures study. Repeated BP measurements were available for 3184 participants from the German population-based Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg (KORA) S4 survey (1999–2001) and two follow-up examinations (2006–08 and 2013–14). Daily meteorological data were obtained from fixed measurement stations including air temperature and diurnal temperature range (DTR). We used confounder-adjusted additive mixed models to examine immediate (same-day, lag 0), delayed (lag 1 to lag 4), and cumulative (up to lag 0–13) exposure effects. Decreases in air temperature were associated with increases in SBP, DBP, and MAP, while we observed no effects for PP at all. For example, a 1 °C decrease in the 14-day moving average (lag 0–13) mean air temperature was associated with a 0.54% [95% confidence interval [95%CI]: 0.41%;0.68%] increase in SBP. Furthermore, decreasing DTR was linked to increasing SBP, DBP, and MAP measures. In the sensitivity analyses, results were found to be robust. Examination of exposure–response functions according to season revealed, that associations for summer and winter can be considered linear, while we detected non-linear functions in spring and autumn. Furthermore, exposure–response functions also differed in the three different surveys. As BP levels influence the risk of cardiovascular mortality, our results show the importance of considering temperature and its variation as potential risk factors. As ongoing climate change affects temperature variability, it is important to understand how the body adapts to changing ambient temperatures.

26. Association between Long-Term Exposure to Traffic-Related Air Pollution and Cardio-Metabolic Phenotypes: An MRI Data-Based Analysis

Abstract

Long-term exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) is associated with cardiometabolic disease; however, its role in subclinical stages of disease development is unclear. Thus, we aimed to explore this association in a cross-sectional analysis, with cardiometabolic phenotypes derived from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Phenotypes of the left (LV) and right cardiac ventricle, whole-body adipose tissue (AT), and organ-specific AT were obtained by MRI in 400 participants of the KORA cohort. Land-use regression models were used to estimate residential long-term exposures to TRAP, e.g., nitrogen dioxides (NO2) or particle number concentration (PNC). Associations between TRAP and MRI phenotypes were modeled using linear regression. Participants’ mean age was 56 ± 9 years, and 42% were female. Long-term exposure to TRAP was associated with decreased LV wall thickness; a 6.0 μg/m3increase in NO2was associated with a −1.9% [95% confidence interval: −3.7%; −0.1%] decrease in mean global LV wall thickness. Furthermore, we found associations between TRAP and increased cardiac AT. A 2,242 n/cm3increase in PNC was associated with a 4.3% [−1.7%; 10.4%] increase in mean total cardiac AT. Associations were more pronounced in women and in participants with diabetes. Our exploratory study indicates that long-term exposure to TRAP is associated with subclinical cardiometabolic disease states, particularly in metabolically vulnerable subgroups.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:Radiotherapy (RT) is of critical importance in the locoregional management of early breast cancer. Although RT is routinely used following breast conserving surgery (BCS), patients may occasionally be effectively treated with BCS alone. Currently, the selection of patients undergoing BCS who do not need breast irradiation is under investigation. With the advancement of personalized medicine, there is an increasing interest in reduction of aggressive treatments especially in older women. The primary objective of this study was to identify elderly patients who may forego breast irradiation after BCS without measurable consequences on local tumor growth and survival. METHODS:We analyzed 2384 early breast cancer patients aged 70 and older who were treated in 17 German certified breast cancer centers between 2001 and 2009. We compared RT versus no RT after guideline adherent (GA) BCS. The outcomes studied were breast cancer recurrence (RFS) and breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS). Low-risk patients were defined by luminal A, tumor size T1 or T2 and node-negative whereas higher-risk patients were defined by patients with G3 or T3/T4 or node-positive or other than Luminal A tumors. To test if there is a difference between two or more survival curves, we used the Gp family of tests of Harrington and Fleming. RESULTS:The median age was 77 yrs (mean 77.6±5.6 y) and the median observation time 46 mths (mean 48.9±24.8 mths). 950 (39.8%) patients were low-risk and 1434 (60.2%) were higher-risk. 1298 (54.4%) patients received GA BCS of which 85.0% (1103) received GA-RT and only 15% (195) did not. For low-risk patients with GA-BCS there were no significant differences in RFS (log rank p = 0.651) and in BCSS (p = 0.573) stratified by GA-RT. 5 years RFS in both groups were > 97%.
