We study the dissociative adsorption of methane at the surface of graphene. Free energy profiles, which include activation energies for different steps of the reaction, are computed from constrained ab initio molecular dynamics. At 300 K, the reaction barriers are much lower than experimental bond dissociation energies of gaseous methane, strongly indicating that the graphene surface acts as a catalyst of methane decomposition. On the other hand, the barriers are still much higher than on the nickel surface. Methane dissociation therefore occurs at a higher rate on nickel than on graphene. This reaction is a prerequisite for graphene growth from a precursor gas. Thus, the growth of the first monolayer should be a fast and efficient process while subsequent layers grow at a diminished rate and in a more controllable manner. Defects may also influence reaction energetics. This is evident from our results, in which simple defects (Stone-Wales defect and nitrogen substitution) lead to different free energy landscapes at both dissociation and adsorption steps of the process. Four distinct zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are prepared using zinc and cobalt ions with 2-aminobenzimidazole and 2-methylimidazole as linkers to explore their electrochemical properties as platforms for aldehyde detection. The resulting ZIF-based sensors exhibit high sensitivity, low detection limits, and robust performance when applied to real-world samples.

This study explores the application of materials used in 3D printing to manufacture the housings of non-invasive sensors employed in measurements using a TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) meter. The research investigates whether sensors designed with 3D printing technology can serve as viable alternatives to conventional invasive and non-invasive sensors. This study focuses on innovative approaches to designing humidity sensors, utilizing Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology to create housings for non-invasive sensors compatible with TDR devices. The paper discusses the use of 3D modeling technology in sensor design, with particular emphasis on materials used in 3D printing, notably polylactic acid (PLA). Environmental factors, such as moisture in building materials, are characterized, and the need for dedicated sensor designs is highlighted. The software utilized in the 3D modeling and printing processes is also described. The Materials and Methods Section provides a detailed account of the construction process for the non-invasive sensor housing and the preparation for moisture measurement in silicate materials using the designed sensor. A prototype sensor was successfully fabricated through 3D printing. Using the designed sensor, measurements were conducted on silicate samples soaked in aqueous solutions with water absorption levels ranging from 0% to 10%. Experimental validation involved testing silicate samples with the prototype sensor to evaluate its effectiveness. The electrical permittivity of the material was calculated, and the root-mean-square error (RMSE) was determined using classical computational methods and machine learning techniques. The RMSE obtained using the classical method was 0.70. The results obtained were further analyzed using machine learning models, including Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). The GPR model achieved an RMSE of 0.15, while the SVM model yielded an RMSE of 0.25. These findings confirm the sensor's effectiveness and its potential for further research and practical applications.

Cardiovascular diseases accompanying metabolic syndrome comprise one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The medical community undertakes attempts to improve treatment options and minimize cardiovascular diseases' numerous consequences and exacerbations. In parallel with pharmacotherapies provided by physicians, nutritionists are developing strategies for diet therapy and prevention based on lifestyle changes, with high success rates. Consumption of specified food compounds included in various products with proven protective properties can be helpful in this regard. Due to the wide possibilities of diet in metabolic health promotion, it seems necessary to systematize information about the metabolically protective and cardioprotective properties of fiber, probiotic bacteria, plant sterols, folic acid, vitamins B12, C, and E, PUFAs, lycopene, polyphenols, arginine, CoQ10, and allicin. The aim of this review was to present the food compounds with potential use in cardiometabolic prevention and diet therapy based on the latest available literature.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of crystalline porous materials distinctively built solely from organic elements, carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and often nitrogen or boron. They form light, mechanically rigid, and chemically stable networks that have many advantages, but their low solubility and poor processability create issues with developing large-scale films or membranes. Two-dimensional (2D) COFs possess periodic porous crystallinity, functionality, modularity, and layered one-dimensional (1D) transport channels. All of these traits, along with the semiconducting properties of selected COFs, make them interesting candidates for integration in optoelectronic devices. Therefore, it is still a challenge to explore computationally and structurally the semiconductivity of COFs and to determine their final potential. Herein, we report on the possible semiconducting properties and results of polyimide-COF materials using density functional theory calculations. Our analysis includes monolayers and multilayers (AA- and AB-stacked modes) of mellitic triimide frameworks designed from mellitic trianhydride (MTA) as the main building knot, including MTI-TAPB-COF, which was previously synthesized from the condensation reaction of MTA and 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB), and other previously unreported structures based on MTA. Respective frameworks have been selected due to the difference in building block symmetry (C 3 + C 2 and C 3 + C 3 ) and different chemical linkages, either by benzene or by pyridine rings. We find the polyimide multilayers to be stable and with varying electronic properties. The finite band gap exhibited by every structure (monolayer and stacked) was sensitive to atomic arrangement. Stacking introduces dispersion to an otherwise flat band structure of the materials, which appeared to be highly sensitive to stacking direction. We reported a new ternary hybrid anhydrous proton-conducting material based on triazole (Tz), wherein it interacted with TiO 2 and cesium hydrogen sulfate (CHS) constructed based on the acid-base interaction. It exhibited high proton conductivity derived by the two acid-base interactions: between CHS and Tz and between Tz and TiO 2 . As a starting point of discussion, we attempted to theoretically predict the high/low proton conductivity using the push-pull protonated atomic distance (PAD) law, which makes it possible to predict the proton conductivity in the acid-base part based on density functional theory. The calculations indicate the possibility of achieving higher proton conductivity in the ternary composites (CHS·Tz-TiO 2 ) involving two acid-base interactions than in binary hybrids, such as CHS·Tz and TiO 2 -Tz composites, suggesting the positive effect of two simultaneous acid-base interactions for achieving high proton conductivity. This result is supported by the experimental result with respect to synthesized materials obtained using the mechanochemical method. Adding TiO 2 to the CHS·Tz system causes a change in the CHS·Tz interaction and promotes proton dissociation, producing a new and fast proton-conducting layer through the formation of Tz-TiO 2 interaction. The dependence of electronic properties of quantum materials on external controls ( e.g. , pressure and temperature) is one of the fundamentals of neuromorphic computing, sensors, etc. Until recently, it has been believed that the theoretical description of such compounds cannot be accomplished using "traditional" density functional theory, and more advanced methods like dynamic mean-field theory should be utilized instead. Focusing here on the example of long-range ordered antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic YNiO 3 phases, we show the interplay between spin and structural motifs under pressure and their impact on electronic properties. We successfully describe the insulating nature of both YNiO 3 phases and the role of symmetry-breaking motifs in the band gap opening. Moreover, by analyzing the pressure-dependent distribution of local motifs, we show that external pressure can significantly reduce the band gap energy of both phases, originating from the reduction of structural and magnetic disproportionation - change in the distribution of local motifs. These results thus demonstrate that some of the experimental observations in quantum materials ( e.g. , YNiO 3 compounds) can be fully understood without accounting for dynamic correlation.

Traditionally, the formation of off-stoichiometric compounds is believed to be the growth effect rather than the intrinsic tendency of the system. However, here, using the example of La 3 Te 4 , we demonstrate that in n-type gapped metals having a large internal gap between principal band edges and the Fermi level inside of the principal conduction band, Fermi-level instability can develop, resulting in a decrease in the formation energy for acceptor defects. Specifically, La vacancies in La 3 Te 4 form spontaneously to produce the acceptor states and remove a fraction of free carriers from the principal conduction band via electron-hole recombination. Such a unique self-doping mechanism allows stabilization of a range of off-stoichiometric La 3- x Te 4 compounds, which have different electronic properties. Moreover, we thus show how controlling synthesis conditions can be used as a knob to reach the target functionality, including the controllable metal-to-insulator transition.

Background: Students are a group particularly high risk of adverse effects from such restrictions introduced within counter transmission the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Fear felt of contracting the disease and social isolation can lead to consuming excessive amounts of energy with food, resulting in weight gain and eating disorders., Objective: The aim of the study was analysed selected lifestyle aspects of Polish and Turkish students before and during the COVID-19 pandemic and to determine the existence of differences between the lifestyles of these individuals during the two periods., Material and Methods: The study was conducted at the turn of 2020-2021 among 435 students, including 331 Polish and 104 Turkish students. The research instrument was an original questionnaire created in a Google Forms, consisting of metric and a proper part regarding lifestyle before and during the pandemic. Prior to the actual study, in order to verify whether the research tool is understandable, a pilot study was conducted, which included 40 individuals. The Wilcoxon test was used to examine the differences between the lifestyle of students before and during the pandemic. A value of p<0.05 was considered statistically significant., Results: Both before and during the pandemic, most Polish students ate 4-5 meals daily (52.9% and 47.7%, respectively), while most Turkish students ate 3 meals (47.1% and 38.5%, respectively). There were statistically significant differences in: duration of sleep (p=0.001), way of spending one's leisure time (p=0.001) and type of physical activity (p=0.001) among the Polish and Turkish students before and during the pandemic., Conclusions: The results of this study showed changes in the lifestyle of both Polish and Turkish students during the pandemic compared to the pre-pandemic period. Background: Inflammatory bowel diseases in children are characterized by a wide variety of symptoms and often a severe clinical course. In the treatment, we aimed to induce and maintain remission. We focused on assessing the efficacy and safety of the concomitant use of two biologic therapies including: anti-TNF (infliximab, adalimumab) vedolizumab and ustekinumab in a refractory pediatric IBD cohort., Methods: Fourteen children (nine ulcerative colitis, one ulcerative colitis/IBD-unspecified, four Crohn's disease) with a disease duration of 5.2 (8 months-14 years) years, initiated dual therapy at an age of 11.7 (3-17) years after failure of monotherapy with a biological drug. Five patients (36%) were treated with vedolizumab/adalimumab (VDZ + ADA), five (36%) with ustekinumab/adalimumab (UST + ADA), and three (21%) with infliximab/vedolizumab (IFX + VDZ). One patient (7%) was switched from a combination of vedolizumab and adalimumab to ustekinumab and adalimumab during follow-up., Results: A clinical improvement was obtained in ten children (73%; 5 UC, 1 UC/IBD-unspecified, 4 CD) on the PCDAI/PUCAI scale after 4 months of a second biological drug being added. The median fecal calprotectin decreased from 1610 µg/g (140-10,100) to 586 µg/g (5-3410; p = 0.028) between baseline and 4 months., Conclusions: Our clinical experience suggests that dual therapy may be an option for pediatric patients with moderate and severe courses of IBD with limited therapeutic options.

Recently, an unprecedented growth in the internet of things (IoT) is being observed, which is becoming the main driver for the entire semiconductor industry. Reliable maintenance and servicing of the IoT is becoming challenging, knowing that the IoT nodes outnumber the human population by a factor of seven. Energy harvesting (EH) can overcome those difficulties, delivering the energyautonomous IoT nodes to the market. EH converts natural or waste energies (vibrations, heat losses, air flows, light, etc.) into useful energy. This article explores the performance of ZnO nanowires under mechanical actuation to characterize their piezoelectric performance. ZnO nanowires were fabricated using ALD and a subsequent chemical bath growth. AISI 301 steel was used as a substrate of the EH device to better fit the mechanical requirements for the piezoelectric generator. We determined that a thin layer of another oxide below ZnO provides outstanding adhesion. The samples were submitted under repetitive mechanical stress in order to characterize the output piezovoltage for different conditions. They exhibited a piezoelectric signal which was stable after hundreds of actuations. This shows good promise for the use of our device based on ZnO, an Earth-abundant and non-toxic material, as an alternative to the conventional and popular but harmful and toxic PZT. The designed measurement setup demonstrated that a AISI 301 steel substrate coated with ZnO deposited by ALD and grown in a chemical bath has promising performance as a piezoelectric material. Characterized ZnO samples generate up to 80 nJ of energy during 55 s runs under matched load conditions, which is sufficient to supply a modern IoT node.

Background: pediatric patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) who qualify for biological therapy represent a group of severely ill patients. They have never been successful with conventional medication. Biologic medications in monotherapy are frequently used in the disease course, however they result in a 1-year remission, which can be maintained in approximately 40% of IBD patients., Method: the present study aims to summarize the review of literature data on the use of therapy with a combination of two biological and small molecule drugs, anti-TNF (infliximab, adalimumab), vedolizumab and ustekinumab, as well as Janus kinase inhibitors (tofacitinib). The risks associated with the use of dual biological therapy and potential adverse effects are particularly important. The literature data was reviewed using the following terms: "use of combination biologic in paediatric IBD", "combination biologics", and "dual biologic for treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease"., Conclusion: the use of dual biological therapy is a new therapeutic option. In pediatric IBD, combining the different mechanisms of action of the two biological drugs seems to be safe and effective. Anti-TNF drugs with vedolizumab or ustekinumab may be a particularly beneficial combination. Nevertheless, the clarification and justification of potential advantages of combined biological therapies in further studies, such as randomized control trials, are needed.

Background: A properly balanced diet should provide multiple valuable nutrients necessary for the proper functioning of the body through the proper frequency of consuming food products that are their source. This is particularly important during the pandemic when there is a need to support the immune system., Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the frequency of consumption of selected groups of food products and to determine whether this frequency differs among medical and non-medical students in the period before and during the COVID-19 pandemic., Material and Methods: The study was conducted among 435 Polish and Turkish students using an original questionnaire. The proper study was preceded by a pilot study in 40 participants.The Wilcoxon test was used to assess the differences in the frequency of consumption of selected groups of products among medical and non-medical students both during and before the pandemic. A value of p<0.05 was considered statistically significant., Results: Significant differences were observed in the frequency of consumption of: sweets (p=0.02 among medical students), salty snacks (p=0.03 among both groups of students), fast food products (p=0.00 among medical and p=0.01 among non-medical students) and energy drinks (p=0.02 among medical and p=0.00 among non-medical student) in the analysed periods of time before and during the COVID-19 pandemic., Conclusions: The study showed that during the pandemic, the frequency of food products consumption in the study groups of students from medical and non-medical faculties is mostly satisfactory. In this work, we present the results of defects analysis concerning ZnO and Al 2 O 3 layers deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique. The analysis was performed by the X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) methods. The layers were either tested as-deposited or after 30 min heating at 300 °C and 450 °C in Ar atmosphere. TEM and XPS investigations revealed amorphous nature and non-stoichiometry of aluminum oxide even after additional high-temperature treatment. EPR confirmed high number of defect states in Al 2 O 3 . For ZnO, we found the as-deposited layer shows ultrafine grains that start to grow when high temperature is applied and that their crystallinity is also improved, resulting in good agreement with XPS results which indicated lower number of defects on the layer surface.

Background: Proper nutrition and balanced physical activity have a beneficial effect on the growth and development of young athletes, supporting their endurance and health, which is particularly important in the period of adolescence., Objective: Aim of this study was to assess eating behaviours, frequency of consumption of some food products and selected elements of lifestyle among young dancers, as well as to compare the age of the dancers and the assessed behavior., Material and Methods: The study included 198 dancers aged 10-15 years. An originally developed questionnaire was used as a research tool., Results: The largest group of dancers (43%) spent on training up to 2 hours per week. The recommended 4-5 meals/day were consumed by 61.1% of dancers, with 87.4% of respondents having breakfast on a daily basis. The recommendations on the daily intake of several portions of fruit and vegetables were followed by 49% and 36.9% of dancers, respectively. It is observed, that the consumption rates of sweets increased, while the consumption rates of fruit decreased with dancers'age. The consumption rates of packed lunch and afternoon snack increased, whereas the consumption rates of dinner decreased with an increasing number of hours spent training., Conclusions: Eating behaviours and the frequency of consumption of food products by young dancers can be described as varied. Their diet is characterised by regular consumption of meals and a correct frequency of consumption of most food products, including high intake of fruit and vegetables, yoghurt and kefir, as well as low consumption of fast food products. Background: Eating habits are mainly shaped at the first stages of human life. Incorrect eating habits in young individuals may in the future lead to eating disorders and predispose to abnormal body weight., Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate eating habits among adolescents and verify whether there are any differences in eating habits between girls and boys., Material and Methods: The study was conducted among 337 post-primary school students, including 126 girls and 211 boys. A standardised questionnaire "My eating habits" was used as a research tool., Results: Secret snacking was slightly more common among girls (27.78%) than boys (24.17%). It was also girls who mostly admitted that other people comment on their diet, as indicated by 33.33% of girls and 18.96% of boys. Girls are also more likely to be dissatisfied with their body weight (41.27% vs. 27.49%) and to occasionally avoid eating despite feeling hungry (42.06% vs. 27.01%) compared to boys., Conclusions: The eating habits of young people are mostly varied. There are differences in the d ietary habits of girls and boys; girls are more likely than boys to overeat under the influence of emotions and to apply dietary restrictions to themselves. Photosynthetic acclimation to cold conditions is an important factor influencing freezing tolerance of plants. Photosynthetic enzyme activities increase as part of a photochemical mechanism underlying photosynthetic acclimation to low temperatures. Additionally, a non-photochemical mechanism may be activated to minimize photooxidative damage. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that differences in stomatal conductance in Hordeum vulgare plants with contrasting freezing tolerances induce various strategies for photosynthetic acclimation to cold stress. Different stomatal behaviors during the prehardening step resulted in diverse plant reactions to low-temperature stress. Plants with a relatively low freezing tolerance exhibited decreased stomatal conductance, resulting in decreased photochemical activity, faster induction of the non-photochemical mechanism, and downregulated expression of two Rubisco activase ( Rca A) splicing variants. In contrast, plants with a relatively high freezing tolerance that underwent a prehardening step maintained the stomatal conductance at control level and exhibited delayed photochemical activity and Rca A expression decrease, and increased Rubisco activity, which increased net photosynthetic rate. Thus, in barley, the induction of photoinhibition avoidance (i.e., non-photochemical photoacclimation mechanism) is insufficient for an effective cold acclimation. An increase in cold-induced net photosynthetic rate due to open stomata is also necessary.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are important new solvents proposed for applications in different separation processes. Herein, an idea of possible use of high pressure in a general strategy of production of 2-phenylethanol (PEA) is discussed. In this work, we present the influence of pressure on the density in binary systems of {1-hexyl-1-methylpyrrolidynium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide, [HMPYR][NTf 2 ], or 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide, [DoMIM][NTf 2 ] + PEA} in a wide range of temperatures (298.15-348.15 K) and pressures (0.1-40 MPa). The densities at ambient and high pressures are measured to present the physicochemical properties of the ILs used in the process of separation of PEA from aqueous phase. The Tait equation was used for the correlation of density of one-component and two-component systems as a function of mole fraction, temperature, and pressure. The influence of pressure is not significant. These systems exhibit mainly negative molar excess volumes, V E . The solid-liquid phase equilibrium (SLE) of [DoMIM][NTf 2 ] in PEA at atmospheric pressure was measured and compared to the SLE high-pressure results. Additionally, the ternary liquid-liquid phase equilibrium (LLE) at ambient pressure in the {[DoMIM][NTf 2 ] (1) + PEA (2) + water (3)} at temperature T = 308.15 K was investigated. The solubility of water in the [DoMIM][NTf 2 ] is quite high in comparison with that measured by us earlier for ILs ( x 3 = 0.403) at T = 308.15 K, which results in not very successful average selectivity of extraction of PEA from the aqueous phase. The [DoMIM][NTf 2 ] has shown strong interaction with PEA without the immiscibility region. The ternary system revealed Treybal's type phase equilibrium in which two partially miscible binaries ([DoMIM][NTf 2 ] + water) and (PEA + water) exist. From the results of LLE in the ternary system, the selectivity and the solute distribution ratio of separation of water/PEA were calculated and compared to the results obtained for the ILs measured earlier by us. The popular NRTL model was used to correlate the experimental tie-lines in ternary LLE. These results may help in a new technological project of "in situ" extraction of PEA from aqueous phase during the biosynthesis.

New data of activity coefficients at infinite dilution, γ 13 ∞ , for 65 different solutes including alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, cycloalkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, thiophene, ethers, ketones, aldehydes, esters and water in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluorotris(perfluoroethyl)phosphate, were determined using inverse gas chromatography within the temperature range from 318.15 to 368.15 K. This is a continuation of our study of ionic liquids based on this anion. The results are compared with the other trifluorotris(perfluoroethyl)phosphate ionic liquids. The γ 13 ∞ values were used to calculate thermodynamic functions such as partial molar excess Gibbs energies [Formula: see text], enthalpies [Formula: see text] and entropies [Formula: see text] as well as gas-liquid partition coefficients of the solutes, K L . These values were used to determine the linear free energy relationship (LFER) system constants as a function of temperature. The selectivities at infinite dilution needed for some extraction problems were calculated and compared with literature data of ionic liquids based on the trifluorotris(perfluoroethyl)phosphate anion and the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium cation. Additionally, the density and viscosity of the investigated ionic liquid at temperatures from 298.15 to 348.15 K were measured.

The solubility of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) in ionic liquids (ILs) and the activity coefficients at infinite dilution (γ13(∞)) of more than 20 solutes (alkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols) were measured in four chosen ionic liquids, their mixtures with β-CD, and in the β-CD at high temperatures from 338 to 398 K using the inverse gas chromatography. The intermolecular interactions, inclusion complexes and the possible increasing of the solubility of β-CD in water using the IL are presented. The solubility of β-CD in ten chosen hydrophobic ILs at the temperature T = 423 K was detected. The solid-liquid phase diagrams (SLE) of {IL (1) + β-CD (2)} binary systems at the high mole fraction of the IL were measured for three systems (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [EMIM][Cl], 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, [EMIM][Br]; and for 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [BMIM][Cl]). The eutectic points were determined at the high IL concentration for all binary systems. The intermolecular interaction and the possibility of inclusion complexes of the IL and/or solvents with β-CD were discussed. The infrared spectroscopy, IR was used for the description of the intermolecular interactions in the (β-CD + IL) systems. It was shown via the activity coefficients at infinite dilution results that the inclusion complexes are dependent on the temperature. The addition of β-CD to the IL does not improve the selectivity of the separation of the aliphatics from aromatics.

The activity coefficients at infinite dilution, gamma(13)(infinity), for 37 solutes, alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, cycloalkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, thiophene, ethers, ketones, and water, in the ionic liquid 1-(3-hydroxypropyl)pyridinium trifluorotris(perfluoroethyl)phosphate [N-C(3)OHPY][FAP] were determined by gas-liquid chromatography at the temperatures from 308.15 to 358.15 K. The partial molar excess enthalpies at infinite dilution values DeltaH(1)(E,infinity) were calculated from the experimental gamma(13)(infinity) values obtained over the temperature range. The selectivities for aliphatics/aromatics hydrocarbons separation problem were calculated from the gamma(13)(infinity) values and compared to the literature values for other ionic liquids, N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) and sulfolane. It was found that the investigated [N-C(3)OHPY][FAP] ionic liquid shows much higher selectivity and capacity at infinite dilution than the generally used organic solvents such as NMP, sulfolane, and other ionic liquids.
