Stars and stellar remnants orbiting a supermassive black hole (SMBH) can interact with an active galactic nucleus (AGN) disc. Over time, prograde orbiters (inclination $ii_{\rm ret}$ sBH decay towards embedded retrograde orbits $(i \to 180^{\circ})$. sBH near polar orbits $(i \sim 90^{\circ})$ and stars on nearly embedded retrograde orbits $(i \sim 180^{\circ})$ show the greatest decreases in $a$. Whether a star is captured by the disc within an AGN lifetime depends primarily on disc density, and secondarily on stellar type and initial $a$. For sBH, disc capture-time is longest for polar orbits, low mass sBH and lower density discs. Computational studies of astrophysical fluid dynamics often make use of explicit high-order artificial dissipation terms (i.e., hyperdiffusion and hyperviscosity), that behave as high-frequency filters, shortening the dissipation range while preserving numerical stability. In this contribution, I derive the Courant–Friedrichs–Lewy stability condition for general order hyperdiffusion, when discretized via central finite differences, to arbitrary order of accuracy in the Taylor expansion.

Direct images of protoplanets embedded in disks around infant stars provide the key to understanding the formation of gas giant planets like Jupiter. Using the Subaru Telescope and Hubble Space Telescope, we find evidence for a jovian protoplanet around AB Aurigae orbiting at a wide projected separation (93 au), likely responsible for multiple planet-induced features in the disk. Its emission is reproducible as reprocessed radiation from an embedded protoplanet. We also identify two structures located at 430-580 au that are candidate sites of planet formation. These data reveal planet formation in the embedded phase and a protoplanet discovery at wide, > 50 au separations characteristic of most imaged exoplanets. We calculate the angle ψ between the Sun path at sunset and the horizon to be ψ = arctan 1 − sin 2 δ cos 2 ϕ tan ( 90 ° − ϕ ) , where δ is the decl. of the Sun, and ϕ is the latitude of the place. We dub this angle the ghorub angle, after غروب, the Arabic word for sunset.

Many white dwarf stars show signs of having accreted smaller bodies, implying that they may host planetary systems. A small number of these systems contain gaseous debris discs, visible through emission lines. We report a stable 123.4min periodic variation in the strength and shape of the CaII emission line profiles originating from the debris disc around the white dwarf SDSSJ122859.93+104032.9. Disk vortices have been heralded as promising routes for planet formation due to their ability to trap significant amounts of pebbles. While the gas motions and trapping properties of two-dimensional vortices have been studied in enough detail in the literature, pebble trapping in three dimensions has received less attention, due to the higher computational demand. Here we use the Pencil Code to study 3D vortices generated by convective overstability and the trapping of solids within them. The gas is unstratified whereas the pebbles settle to the midplane due to vertical gravity. We find that for pebbles of normalized friction times of St = 0.05 and St = 1, and dust-to-gas ratio $\varepsilon=0.01$, the vortex column in the midplane is strongly perturbed. Yet, when the initial dust-to-gas ratio is decreased the vortices remain stable and function as efficient pebble traps. Streaming instability is triggered even for the lowest dust-to-gas ratio ($\varepsilon_0 = 10^{-4}$) and smallest pebble sizes (St = 0.05) we assumed, showing a path for planetesimal formation in vortex cores from even extremely subsolar metallicity. To estimate if the reached overdensities can be held together solely by their own gravity we estimate the Roche density at different radii. Depending on disk model and radial location of the pebble clump we do reach concentrations higher than the Roche density. The Pencil Code is a highly modular physics-oriented simulation code that can be adapted to a wide range of applications. It is primarily designed to solve partial differential equations (PDEs) of compressible hydrodynamics and has lots of add-ons ranging from astrophysical magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) to meteorological cloud microphysics and engineering applications in combustion. Nevertheless, the framework is general and can also be applied to situations not related to hydrodynamics or even PDEs, for example when just the message passing interface or input/output strategies of the code are to be used. Vortices (flows with closed elliptic streamlines) are exact nonlinear solutions to the compressible Euler equation. In this contribution, we use differential geometry to derive the transformations between Cartesian and elliptic coordinates, and show that in elliptic coordinates a constant vorticity flow reduces to $\dot{\mu}=0$ and $\dot{\nu}={\rm const}$ along the streamline $\mu_0$ that matches the vortex eccentricity., Comment: RNAAS Research Notes. & pages, 1 figure

We discuss in a thermodynamic, geologically empirical way the long-term nature of the stable majority ices that could be present in Kuiper Belt Object 2014 MU69 after its 4.6 Gyr residence in the EKB as a cold classical object. Considering the stability versus sublimation into vacuum for the suite of ices commonly found on comets, Centaurs, and KBOs at the average ~40K sunlit surface temperature of MU69 over Myr to Gyr, we find only 3 common ices that are truly refractory: HCN, CH3OH, and H2O (in order of increasing stability). NH3 and H2CO ices are marginally stable and may be removed by any positive temperature excursions in the EKB, as produced every 1e8 - 1e9 yrs by nearby supernovae and passing O/B stars. To date the NH team has reported the presence of abundant CH3OH and evidence for H2O on MU69s surface (Lisse et al. 2017, Grundy et al. 2020). NH3 has been searched for, but not found. We predict that future absorption feature detections will be due to an HCN or poly-H2CO based species. Consideration of the conditions present in the EKB region during the formation era of MU69 lead us to infer that it formed "in the dark", in an optically thick mid-plane, unable to see the nascent, variable, highly luminous Young Stellar Object-TTauri Sun, and that KBOs contain HCN and CH3OH ice phases in addition to the H2O ice phases found in their Short Period comet descendants. Finally, when we apply our ice thermal stability analysis to bodies/populations related to MU69, we find that methanol ice may be ubiquitous in the outer solar system; that if Pluto is not a fully differentiated body, then it must have gained its hypervolatile ices from proto-planetary disk sources in the first few Myr of the solar systems existence; and that hypervolatile rich, highly primordial comet C/2016 R2 was placed onto an Oort Cloud orbit on a similar timescale., Comment: 34 Pages, 5 Figures, 2 SOM Tables

The ongoing COVID-19 epidemics poses a particular challenge to low and middle income countries, making some of them consider the strategy of “vertical confinement”. In this strategy, contact is reduced only to specific groups (like age groups) that are at increased risk of severe disease following SARS-CoV-2 infection. We aim to assess the feasibility of this scenario as an exit strategy for the current lockdown in terms of its ability to keep the number of cases under the health care system capacity. We developed a modified SEIR model, including confinement, asymptomatic transmission, quarantine and hospitalization. The population is subdivided into 9 age groups, resulting in a system of 72 coupled nonlinear differential equations. The rate of transmission is dynamic and derived from the observed delayed fatality rate; the parameters of the epidemics are derived with a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. We used Brazil as an example of middle income country, but the results are easily generalizable to other countries considering a similar strategy. We find that starting from 60% horizontal confinement, an exit strategy on May 1st of confinement of individuals older than 60 years old and full release of the younger population results in 400 000 hospitalizations, 50 000 ICU cases, and 120 000 deaths in the 50-60 years old age group alone. The health care system avoids collapse if the 50-60 years old are also confined, but our model assumes an idealized lockdown where the confined are perfectly insulated from contamination, so our numbers are a conservative lower bound. Our results discourage confinement by age as an exit strategy.

The New Horizons flyby of the cold classical Kuiper Belt object MU69 showed it to be a contact binary. The existence of other contact binaries in the 1-10km range raises the question of how common these bodies are and how they evolved into contact. Here we consider that the lobes of MU69 formed as a binary in the Solar nebula, and calculate its orbital evolution in the presence of gas. We find that the sub-Keplerian wind of the disk brings the drag timescales for 10km bodies under 1 Myr for quadratic-velocity drag. In the Kuiper belt, however, the drag is linear with velocity and the effect of the wind cancels out as the angular momentum gained in half an orbit is lost in the other half: the drag timescales for 10 km bodies remain over 10 Myr. In this situation we find that a combination of drag and Kozai-Lidov oscillations is a promising channel for collapse. We analytically solve the hierarchical three-body problem with drag and implement it into a Kozai plus tidal friction model. The permanent quadrupoles of the lobes make the Kozai oscillations stochastic, and as drag shrinks the semimajor axis it more easily allows the fluctuations to bring the system into contact. Evolution to contact happens very rapidly (within $10^4$ yr) in the pure, double-average quadrupole, Kozai region between $\approx 85-95^\circ$, and within 3 Myr in the drag-assisted region beyond it. The synergy between $J_2$ and gas drag widens the window of contact to 80-100$^\circ$ initial inclination, over a larger range of semimajor axes. As such, the model predicts an initial contact binary fraction of about 10\% for the cold classicals in the Kuiper belt. The speed at contact deviates from the escape velocity only because of the oblateness. We consider the history of New Horizons target (486958) Arrokoth in the context of its sublimative evolution. Shortly after the Sun's protoplanetary disk (PPD) cleared, the newly intense sunlight sparked a sublimative period in Arrokoth's early history that lasted for ~10-100 Myr. Although this sublimation was too weak to significantly alter Arrokoth's spin state, it could drive mass transport around the surface significant enough to erase topographic features on length scales of ~10-100 m. This includes craters up to ~50-500 m in diameter, which suggests that the majority of Arrokoth's craters may not be primordial (dating from the merger of Arrokoth's lobes), but rather could date from after the end of this sublimative period. Thereafter, Arrokoth entered a Quiescent Period (which lasts to the present day), in which volatile production rates are at least 13 orders of magnitude less than the ~10^24 molecules/s detection limit of the New Horizons spacecraft (Lisse et al. 2020). This is insufficient to drive either mass transport or sublimative torques. These results suggest that the observed surface of Arrokoth is not primordial, but rather dates from the Quiescent Period. By contrast, the inability of sublimative torques to meaningfully alter Arrokoth's rotation state suggests that its shape is indeed primordial, and its observed rotation is representative of its spin state after formation., Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

Kepler's 2nd law, the law of the areas, is usually taught in passing, between the 1st and the 3rd laws, to be explained "later on" as a consequence of angular momentum conservation. The 1st and 3rd laws receive the bulk of attention; the 1st law because of the paradigm shift significance in overhauling the previous circular models with epicycles of both Ptolemy and Copernicus, the 3rd because of its convenience to the standard curriculum in having a simple mathematical statement that allows for quantitative homework assignments and exams. In this work I advance a method for teaching the 2nd law that combines the paradigm-shift significance of the 1st and the mathematical proclivity of the 3rd. The approach is rooted in the historical method, indeed, placed in its historical context, Kepler's 2nd is as revolutionary as the 1st: as the 1st law does away with the epicycle, the 2nd law does away with the equant. This way of teaching the 2nd law also formulates the "time=area" statement quantitatively, in the way of Kepler's equation, M = E - e sin E (relating mean anomaly M, eccentric anomaly E, and eccentricity e), where the left-hand side is time and the right-hand side is area. In doing so, it naturally paves the way to finishing the module with an active learning computational exercise, for instance, to calculate the timing and location of Mars' next opposition. The masses, rates, and spins of merging stellar-mass binary black holes (BBHs) detected by aLIGO and Virgo provide challenges to traditional BBH formation and merger scenarios. An active galactic nucleus (AGN) disk provides a promising additional merger channel, because of the powerful influence of the gas that drives orbital evolution, makes encounters dissipative, and leads to migration. Previous work showed that stellar mass black holes (sBHs) in an AGN disk migrate to regions of the disk, known as migration traps, where positive and negative gas torques cancel out, leading to frequent BBH formation. Here we build on that work by simulating the evolution of additional sBHs that enter the inner disk by either migration or inclination reduction. We also examine whether the BBHs formed in our models have retrograde or prograde orbits around their centers of mass with respect to the disk, determining the orientation, relative to the disk, of the spin of the merged BBHs. Orbiters entering the inner disk form BBHs with sBHs on resonant orbits near the migration trap. When these sBHs reach ~80 Msun, they form BBHs with sBHs in the migration trap, which over 10 Myr reach ~1000 Msun. We find 68% of the BBHs in our simulation orbit in the retrograde direction, which implies BBHs in our merger channel will have small dimensionless aligned spins, \chi_eff. Overall, our models produce BBHs that resemble both the majority of BBH mergers detected thus far (0.66 to 120 Gpc^-3 yr^-1 ) and two recent unusual detections, GW190412 (~0.3 Gpc^-3 yr^-1 ) and GW190521 (~0.1 Gpc^-3 yr^-1 )., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, accepted to ApJ

Motivated by models suggesting that the inner planet forming regions of protoplanetary discs are predominantly lacking in viscosity-inducing turbulence, and are possibly threaded by Hall-effect generated large-scale horizontal magnetic fields, we examine the dynamics of the corotation region of a low-mass planet in such an environment. The corotation torque in an inviscid, isothermal, dead zone ought to saturate, with the libration region becoming both symmetrical and of a uniform vortensity, leading to fast inward migration driven by the Lindblad torques alone. However, in such a low viscosity situation, the material on librating streamlines essentially preserves its vortensity. If there is relative radial motion between the disc gas and the planet, the librating streamlines will no longer be symmetrical. Hence, if the gas is torqued by a large scale magnetic field so that it undergoes a net inflow or outflow past the planet, driving evolution of the vortensity and inducing asymmetry of the corotation region, the corotation torque can grow, leading to a positive torque. In this paper we treat this effect by applying a symmetry argument to the previously studied case of a migrating planet in an inviscid disc. Our results show that the corotation torque due to a laminar Hall-induced magnetic field in a dead zone behaves quite differently from that studied previously for a viscous disc. Resolved ALMA and VLA observations indicate the existence of two dust traps in the protoplanetary disc MWC 758. By means of 2D gas+dust hydrodynamical simulations post-processed with 3D dust radiative transfer calculations, we show that the spirals in scattered light, the eccentric, asymmetric ring and the crescent-shaped structure in the (sub)millimetre can all be caused by two giant planets: a 1.5-Jupiter mass planet at 35 au (inside the spirals) and a 5-Jupiter mass planet at 140 au (outside the spirals). The outer planet forms a dust-trapping vortex at the inner edge of its gap (at ~85 au), and the continuum emission of this dust trap reproduces the ALMA and VLA observations well. The outer planet triggers several spiral arms which are similar to those observed in polarised scattered light. The inner planet also forms a vortex at the outer edge of its gap (at ~50 au), but it decays faster than the vortex induced by the outer planet, as a result of the disc's turbulent viscosity. The vortex decay can explain the eccentric inner ring seen with ALMA as well as the low signal and larger azimuthal spread of this dust trap in VLA observations. Structures in circumstellar disks such as gaps and rings are often attributed to planets. This connection has been difficult to show unequivocally, as other processes may also produce these features. Particularly, a photoelectric instability (PEI) has been proposed, operating in gas-rich optically thin disks, that generates structures predicted by planet--disk interactions. We examine the question of how to disentangle planetary effects on disk structure from the effects of the PEI. We use the Pencil Code to perform 2D global hydrodynamical models of the dynamics of gas and dust in a thin disk, with and without planetary perturbers. Photoelectric heating is modeled with an equation of state where pressure is proportional to dust surface density. The drag force on grains and its backreaction on the gas are included. Analyzing the situation without PEI, we find that gas--dust interactions alter the shape of the planetary gap from the dust-free case when the local dust-to-gas ratio $\varepsilon$ approaches unity. This result applies also to primordial disks, because dust drifting inwards accumulates at the edge of the planetary gap, and any initial dust-to-gas ratio eventually achieves $\varepsilon=1$ if the dust reservoir is sufficient. We find a result particular to high dust-to-gas ratio disks as well: as dust drifts inwards, the dust front becomes a sharp transition, and the backreaction triggers the Rossby wave instability. When PEI is included, we find that it obscures structures induced by planets unless the planet's mass is sufficiently large to carve a noticeable gap. Specifically, the instability generates arcs and rings of regular spacing: a planet is discernible when it carves a dust gap wider than the wavelength of the PEI., submitted to ApJ, referee report received, comments welcome

The large crescents imaged by ALMA in transition disks suggest that azimuthal dust trapping concentrates the larger grains, but centimetre-wavelengths continuum observations are required to map the distribution of the largest observable grains. A previous detection at ~1cm of an unresolved clump along the outer ring of MWC758 (Clump1), and buried inside more extended sub-mm continuum, motivates followup VLA observations. Deep multiconfiguration integrations reveal the morphology of Clump 1 and additional cm-wave components which we characterize via comparison with a deconvolution of recent 342GHz data (~1mm). Clump1, which concentrates ~1/3 of the whole disk flux density at ~1cm, is resolved as a narrow arc with a deprojected aspect ratio Chi>5.6, and with half the azimuthal width than at 342 GHz. The spectral trends in the morphology of Clump1 are quantitatively consistent with the Lyra-Lin prescriptions for dust trapping in an anticyclonic vortex, provided with porous grains (f~0.2+-0.2) in a very elongated (Chi~14+-3) and cold (T~23+-2K) vortex. The same prescriptions constrain the turbulence parameter alpha and the gas surface density Sigma_g through log10( alpha x Sigma_g /g/cm2)~-2.3+-0.4, thus requiring values for Sigma_g larger than a factor of a few compared to that reported in the literature from the CO isotopologues, if alpha, Comment: accepted to MNRAS

Recent developments in non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic simulations of protoplanetary disks suggest that instead of being traditional turbulent (viscous) accretion disks, they have a largely laminar flow with accretion driven by large-scale wind torques. These disks are possibly threaded by Hall-effect generated large-scale horizontal magnetic fields. We have examined the dynamics of the corotation region of a low mass planet embedded in such a disk and the evolution of the associated migration torque. These disks lack strong turbulence and associated turbulent diffusion, and the presence of a magnetic field and radial gas flow presents a situation outside the applicability of previous corotation torque theory. WD 1145+017 is currently the only white dwarf known to exhibit periodic transits of planetary debris as well as absorption lines from circumstellar gas. We present the first simultaneous fast optical spectrophotometry and broad-band photometry of the system, obtained with the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and the Liverpool Telescope (LT), respectively. The observations spanned $5.5$ h, somewhat longer than the $4.5$-h orbital period of the debris. Dividing the GTC spectrophotometry into five wavelength bands reveals no significant colour differences, confirming grey transits in the optical. We argue that absorption by an optically thick structure is a plausible alternative explanation for the achromatic nature of the transits that can allow the presence of small-sized ($\sim\mu$m) particles. The longest ($87$ min) and deepest ($50$ per cent attenuation) transit recorded in our data exhibits a complex structure around minimum light that can be well modelled by multiple overlapping dust clouds. The strongest circumstellar absorption line, Fe II $\lambda$5169, significantly weakens during this transit, with its equivalent width reducing from a mean out-of-transit value of $2$ \AA\ to $1$ \AA\ in-transit, supporting spatial correlation between the circumstellar gas and dust. Finally, we made use of the Gaia Data Release 2 and archival photometry to determine the white dwarf parameters. Adopting a helium-dominated atmosphere containing traces of hydrogen and metals, and a reddening $E(B-V)=0.01$ we find $T_\mathrm{eff}=15\,020 \pm 520$ K, $\log g=8.07\pm0.07$, corresponding to $M_\mathrm{WD}=0.63\pm0.05\ \mbox{$\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$}$ and a cooling age of $224\pm30$ Myr., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (2018 Aug 22)

This review examines recent theoretical developments in our understanding of turbulence in cold, non-magnetically active, planetesimal forming regions of protoplanetary disks which we refer to throughout as "Ohmic zones". We give a brief background introduction to the subject of disk turbulence followed by a terse pedagogical review of the phenomenology of hydrodynamic turbulence. The equations governing the dynamics of cold astrophysical disks are given and basic flow states are described. We discuss the Solberg-Hoiland conditions required for stability, and the three recently identified turbulence generating mechanisms possibly active in protoplanetary disk Ohmic zones, namely, (i) the Vertical Shear Instability, (ii) The Convective Overstability and (iii) the Zombie Vortex Instability. We assess the contribution of dynamical hardening by direct three-body scattering interactions to the rate of stellar-mass black hole binary (BHB) mergers in galactic nuclei. We derive an analytic model for the single-binary encounter rate in a nucleus with spherical and disk components hosting a super-massive black hole (SMBH). We determine the total number of encounters $N_{\rm GW}$ needed to harden a BHB to the point that inspiral due to gravitational wave emission occurs before the next three-body scattering event. This is done independently for both the spherical and disk components. Using a Monte Carlo approach, we refine our calculations for $N_{\rm GW}$ to include gravitational wave emission between scattering events. For astrophysically plausible models we find that typically $N_{\rm GW} \lesssim$ 10. We find two separate regimes for the efficient dynamical hardening of BHBs: (1) spherical star clusters with high central densities, low velocity dispersions and no significant Keplerian component; and (2) migration traps in disks around SMBHs lacking any significant spherical stellar component in the vicinity of the migration trap, which is expected due to effective orbital inclination reduction of any spherical population by the disk. We also find a weak correlation between the ratio of the second-order velocity moment to velocity dispersion in galactic nuclei and the rate of BHB mergers, where this ratio is a proxy for the ratio between the rotation- and dispersion-supported components. Because disks enforce planar interactions that are efficient in hardening BHBs, particularly in migration traps, they have high merger rates that can contribute significantly to the rate of BHB mergers detected by the advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory., 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Orbital advection is a significant bottleneck in disk simulations, and a particularly tricky one when used in connection with magnetohydrodynamics. We have developed an orbital advection algorithm suitable for the induction equation with magnetic potential. The electromotive force is split into advection and shear term, and we find that we do not need an advective gauge as solving the orbital advection implicitly precludes the shear term from canceling the advection term. We prove and demonstrate the third order in time accuracy of the scheme. The algorithm is also suited for non-magnetic problems. Benchmarked results of (hydrodynamical) planet-disk interaction and the of the magnetorotational instability are reproduced. We include detailed descriptions of the construction and selection of stabilizing dissipations (or high frequency filters) needed to generate practical results. The scheme is self-consistent, accurate, and elegant in its simplicity, making it particularly efficiently in straightforward finite-difference methods. Planets are born in protostellar disks, which are now observed with enough resolution to address questions about internal gas flows. Candidates for driving the flows include magnetic forces, but ionization state estimates suggest much of the gas mass decouples from magnetic fields. Thus, hydrodynamical instabilities could play a major role. We investigate disk dynamics under conditions typical for a T Tauri system, using global 3D radiation hydrodynamics simulations with embedded particles and a resolution of 70 cells per scale height. Stellar irradiation heating is included with realistic dust opacities. The disk starts in joint radiative balance and hydrostatic equilibrium. The vertical shear instability (VSI) develops into turbulence that persists up to at least 1600 inner orbits (143 outer orbits). Turbulent speeds are a few percent of the local sound speed at the midplane, increasing to 20%, or 100 m/s, in the corona. These are consistent with recent upper limits on turbulent speeds from optically thin and thick molecular line observations of TW Hya and HD 163296. The predominantly vertical motions induced by the VSI efficiently lift particles upwards. Grains 0.1 and 1 mm in size achieve scale heights greater than expected in isotropic turbulence. We conclude that while kinematic constraints from molecular line emission do not directly discriminate between magnetic and nonmagnetic disk models, the small dust scale heights measured in HL Tau and HD 163296 favor turbulent magnetic models, which reach lower ratios of the vertical kinetic energy density to the accretion stress., Comment: Accepted for ApJ

The millimeter observations of dust in protoplanetary disks show us spectacular structures like numerous gaps, vortices and spirals. In particular, IRS 48 disk demonstrates a large vortex-like structure. Molecular lines provide information about disks that is complementary to dust continuum observations: formaldehyde was found on the inner edge of the IRS 48 vortex, along with detections of SO2 and CS isotopes.We use a reduced chemical network containing main carbon- and sulfur-bearing species to find the molecular species which can be sensitive to the gaps in dust, as well as to accumulation of the dust grains in the vortex. We find that SO molecule is the main reservoir for sulfur in IRS 48, for adopted disk model as in Bruderer et al. 2014. While SO is very sensitive to the gap edge, it cannot trace the vortex as it is weakly responding to the local increase in dust. Instead, SO2 molecule abundance can be expected to drop quickly within the vortex, making it an interesting tracer of dust-trapping structure.

Accretion disks around supermassive black holes (SMBH) are promising sites for stellar mass black hole (BH) mergers due to mass segregation and merger acceleration by disk gas torques. Here we show that a GW-kick at BH merger causes ram-pressure stripping of gas within the BH Hill sphere. If $R_{H}\geq H$, the disk height, an off-center UV flare at $a_{\rm BH} \sim 10^{3}r_{g}$ emerges within $t_{\rm UV} \sim \rm{O}(2 {\rm days})(a_{\rm BH}/10^{3}r_{g})(M_{\rm SMBH}/10^{8}M_{\odot})(v_{\rm kick}/10^{2}\rm{km/s})$ post-merger and lasts O$(R_{H}/v_{\rm kick}) \sim \rm{O}(5 t_{\rm UV}$). The flare emerges with luminosity O($10^{42}{\rm erg/s})(t_{\rm UV}/2{\rm days})^{-1}(M_{\rm Hill}/1M_{\odot})(v_{\rm kick}/10^{2}{\rm km/s})^{2}$. Recent high-resolution, near-infrared images of protoplanetary disks have shown that these disks often present spiral features. Spiral arms are among the structures predicted decades ago by numerical simulations of disk-planet interaction and thus it is tempting to suspect that planetary perturbers are responsible for the observed signatures. However, such interpretation is not free of problems. The spirals are found to have large pitch angles, and in at least one case (HD 100546) the spiral feature appears effectively unpolarized, which implies thermal emission of the order of 1000K (465$\pm$40K at closer inspection). We have recently shown in two-dimensional models that shock dissipation in the supersonic wake of high-mass planets can lead to significant heating if the disk is sufficiently adiabatic. In this paper we extend this analysis to three dimensions in thermodynamically evolving disks. We use the Pencil Code in spherical coordinates for our models, with a prescription for thermal cooling based on the optical depth of the local vertical gas column. We use a 5$M_J$ planet, and show that shocks in the region around the planet where the Lindblad resonances occur heat the gas to substantially higher temperatures than the ambient disk gas at that radius. The gas is accelerated vertically away from the midplane by the shocks to form shock bores, and the gas falling back toward the midplane breaks up into a turbulent surf near the Lindblad resonances. This turbulence, although localized, has high $\alpha$ values, reaching 0.05 in the inner Lindblad resonance, and 0.1 in the outer one. We also find evidence that the disk regions heated up by the planetary shocks eventually becomes superadiabatic, generating convection far from the planet's orbit., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. Here we propose a mechanism for efficiently growing intermediate mass black holes (IMBH) in discs around supermassive black holes. Stellar mass objects can efficiently agglomerate when facilitated by the gas disc. Stars, compact objects and binaries can migrate, accrete and merge within discs around supermassive black holes. While dynamical heating by cusp stars excites the velocity dispersion of nuclear cluster objects (NCOs) in the disc, gas in the disc damps NCO orbits. If gas damping dominates, NCOs remain in the disc with circularized orbits and large collision cross-sections. IMBH seeds can grow extremely rapidly by collisions with disc NCOs at low relative velocities, allowing for super-Eddington growth rates. Once an IMBH seed has cleared out its feeding zone of disc NCOs, growth of IMBH seeds can become dominated by gas accretion from the active galactic nucleus (AGN) disc. However, the IMBH can migrate in the disc and expand its feeding zone, permitting a super-Eddington accretion rate to continue. Growth of IMBH seeds via NCO collisions is enhanced by a pile-up of migrators. We highlight the remarkable parallel between the growth of IMBH in AGN discs with models of giant planet growth in protoplanetary discs. If an IMBH becomes massive enough it can open a gap in the AGN disc. IMBH migration in AGN discs may stall, allowing them to survive the end of the AGN phase and remain in galactic nuclei. Our proposed mechanisms should be more efficient at growing IMBH in AGN discs than the standard model of IMBH growth in stellar clusters. Dynamical heating of disc NCOs by cusp stars is transferred to the gas in an AGN disc helping to maintain the outer disc against gravitational instability. Model predictions, observational constraints and implications are discussed in a companion paper (Paper II).

Galactic nuclei should contain a cluster of stars and compact objects in the vicinity of the central supermassive black hole due to stellar evolution, minor mergers and gravitational dynamical friction. By analogy with protoplanetary migration, nuclear cluster objects (NCOs) can migrate in the accretion disks that power active galactic nuclei by exchanging angular momentum with disk gas. Here we show that an individual NCO undergoing runaway outward migration comparable to Type III protoplanetary migration can generate an accretion rate corresponding to Seyfert AGN or quasar luminosities. Multiple migrating NCOs in an AGN disk can dominate traditional viscous disk accretion and at large disk radii, ensemble NCO migration and accretion could provide sufficient heating to prevent the gravitational instability from consuming disk gas in star formation. The magnitude and energy of the X-ray soft excess observed at ~0.1-1keV in Seyfert AGN could be explained by a small population of ~10^{2}-10^{3} accreting stellar mass black holes or a few ULXs. NCO migration and accretion in AGN disks are therefore extremely important mechanisms to add to realistic models of AGN disks.

The formation of planets remains one of the most challenging problems of contemporary astrophysics. Starting with micron-sized dust grains, coagulation models predict growth up to centimeter (pebbles), but growth beyond this size is difficult because of fragmentation and drift. Ways to bypass this problem have focused on inhomogeneities in the flow, be that zonal flows, streaming instability, or vortices. Because vortices are in equilibrium between the Coriolis and the pressure force, the pressureless grains will orbit along a vortex streamline experiencing a drag force. This is a very effective mechanism to concentrate pebbles as also seen in numerical simulations and possibly in ALMA observations. Yet, a high pebble load is dangerous for the vortex, and we showed that in two-dimensional simulations the backreaction eventually leads to vortex disruption. We investigate whether the same happens in three dimensions. We perform 3D simulations with pebbles in a local box finding that, although the pebbles disturb the vortex around the midplane, the column does not get destroyed. This result is important because, based on the previous 2D result suggesting complete disruption, the vortex interpretation of ALMA observations has been called into question. We show instead that the vortex behaves like a Taylor column, and the pebbles as obstacles to the flow. Pebble accumulation in the center of the vortices proceeds to roughly the same concentration as in the control run without backreaction.

Previous theoretical works have shown that in optically thin disks, dust grains are photoelectrically stripped of electrons by starlight, heating nearby gas and possibly creating a dust clumping instability, the photoelectric instability (PeI), that significantly alters global disk structure. In the current work, we use the Pencil Code to perform the first numerical models of the PeI that include stellar radiation pressure on dust grains in order to explore the parameter regime in which the instability operates. In models with gas surface densities greater than $\sim$$10^{-4}~\mathrm{g}~\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$, we see a variety of dust structures, including sharp concentric rings and non-axisymmetric arcs and clumps that represent dust surface density enhancements of factors of $\sim$$5-20$ depending on the run parameters. The gas distributions show various structures as well, including clumps and arcs formed from spiral arms. In models with lower gas surface densities, vortices and smooth spiral arms form in the gas distribution, but the dust is too weakly coupled to the gas to be significantly perturbed. In one high gas surface density model, we include a large, low-order gas viscosity, and, in agreement with previous radiation pressure-free models, find that it observably smooths the structures that form in the gas and dust, suggesting that resolved images of a given disk may be useful for deriving constraints on the effective viscosity of its gas. Broadly, our models show that radiation pressure does not preclude the formation of complex structure from the PeI, but the qualitative manifestation of the PeI depends strongly on the parameters of the system. The PeI may provide an explanation for unusual disk morphologies such as the moving blobs of the AU Mic disk, the asymmetric dust distribution of the 49 Ceti disk, and the rings and arcs found in the disk around HD 141569A., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures; submitted to ApJ

As accretion in protoplanetary disks is enabled by turbulent viscosity, the border between active and inactive (dead) zones constitutes a location where there is an abrupt change in the accretion flow. The gas accumulation that ensues triggers the Rossby wave instability, that in turn saturates into anticyclonic vortices. It was suggested that the trapping of solids within them leads to a burst of planet formation on very short timescales. We perform two-dimensional global simulations of the dynamics of gas and solids in a non-magnetized thin protoplanetary disk with the Pencil Code. We use multiple particle species of radius 1, 10, 30, and 100 cm, solving for the particles' gravitational interaction by a particle-mesh method. The dead zone is modeled as a region of low viscosity. Adiabatic and locally isothermal equations of state are used. We find that the Rossby wave instability is triggered under a variety of conditions, thus making vortex formation a robust process. Inside the vortices, fast accumulation of solids occurs and the particles collapse into objects of planetary mass in timescales as short as five orbits. Because the drag force is size-dependent, aerodynamical sorting ensues within the vortical motion, and the first bound structures formed are composed primarily of similarly-sized particles. In addition to erosion due to ram pressure, we identify gas tides from the massive vortices as a disrupting agent of formed protoplanetary embryos. We also estimate the collisional velocity history of the particles that compose the most massive embryo by the end of the simulation, finding that the vast majority of them never experienced a collision with another particle at speeds faster than 1 m/s., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures + Appendices. We present local numerical models of accretion disk turbulence driven by the magnetorotational instability with varying shear rate. The resulting turbulent stresses are compared with predictions of a closure model in which triple correlations are modelled in terms of quadratic correlations. This local model uses five nondimensional parameters to describe the properties of the flow. We attempt to determine these closure parameters for our simulations and find that the model does produce qualitatively correct behaviour. In addition, we present results concerning the shear rate dependency of the magnetic to kinetic energy ratio. We present global 3D MHD simulations of disks of gas and solids, aiming at developing models that can be used to study various scenarios of planet formation and planet-disk interaction in turbulent accretion disks. A second goal is to show that Cartesian codes are comparable to cylindrical and spherical ones in handling the magnetohydrodynamics of the disk simulations, as the disk-in-a-box models presented here develop and sustain MHD turbulence. We investigate the dependence of the magnetorotational instability on disk scale height, finding evidence that the turbulence generated by the magnetorotational instability grows with thermal pressure. The turbulent stresses depend on the thermal pressure obeying a power law of 0.24+/-0.03, compatible with the value of 0.25 found in shearing box calculations. The ratio of stresses decreased with increasing temperature. We also study the dynamics of boulders in the hydromagnetic turbulence. The vertical turbulent diffusion of the embedded boulders is comparable to the turbulent viscosity of the flow. We analyze the concentration of solid particles in vortices created and sustained by radial buoyancy in protoplanetary disks, e.g., baroclinic vortex growth. Besides the gas drag acting on particles, we also allow for back-reaction from dust onto the gas. This becomes important when the local dust-to-gas ratio approaches unity. In our two-dimensional, local, shearing sheet simulations, we see high concentrations of grains inside the vortices for a broad range of Stokes numbers, St. An initial dust-to-gas ratio of 1:100 can easily be reversed to 100:1 for St = 1.0. The increased dust-to-gas ratio triggers the streaming instability, thus counter-intuitively limiting the maximal achievable overdensities. We find that particle trapping inside vortices opens the possibility for gravity assisted planetesimal formation even for small particles (St = 0.01) and a low initial dust-to-gas ratio of 1:10^4, e.g., much smaller than in the previously studied magnetohydrodynamic zonal flow case.
