In this paper the technological aspects of the FAZIA array will be explored. After a productive commissioning phase, FAZIA blocks started to measure and give very useful data to explore the physics of Fermi energy heavy-ion reactions. This was possible thanks to many technical measures and innovations developed in the commissioning phase and tuned during the first experimental campaigns. This paper gives a detailed description of the present status of the FAZIA setup from the electronic and mechanical point of view, trying also to trace a path for new improvements and refinements of the apparatus., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realization of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly-segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterization of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximize its science output. The paper reviews all the achievements made in the AGATA project including all the necessary infrastructure to operate and support the spectrometer., Comment: This version contains a correction of a typing error in the caption of Fig. 2. - Abstract
The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL), Italy. In this installation, AGATA will consist, at the beginning, of 13 AGATA triple clusters (ATCs) with an angular coverage of 1n,and progressively the number of ATCs will increase up to a 2 pi angular coverage. This setup will exploit both stable and radioactive ion beams delivered by the Tandem-PIAVE-ALPI accelerator complex and the SPES facility. The new implementation of AGATA at LNL will be used in two different configurations, firstly one coupled to the PRISMA large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer and lately a second one at Zero Degrees, along the beam line. These two configurations will allow us to cover a broad physics program, using different reaction mechanisms, such as Coulomb excitation, fusion-evaporation, transfer and fission at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. These setups have been designed to be coupled with a large variety of complementary detectors such as charged particle detectors, neutron detectors, heavy-ion detectors, high-energy gamma-ray arrays, cryogenic and gasjet targets and the plunger device for lifetime measurements. We present in this paper the conceptual design, characteristics and performance figures of this implementation of AGATA at LNL.

International audience; The AGATA collaboration has a long-standing leadership in the development of front-end electronics for high resolution $\gamma $-ray spectroscopy using large volume high purity germanium detectors. For two decades, the AGATA collaboration has been developing state-of-the-art digital electronics processing with high resolution sampling ADC, high-speed signal transfer and fast readout to a high throughput computing (HTC) farm for on-line pulse shape analysis. The collaboration is presently addressing the next challenge of equipping a 4$\pi $ array with more than 6000 channels in high resolution mode, generating approximately 10 MHz of total trigger requests, coupled to a large variety of complementary instruments. A next generation of front-end electronics, presently under design, is based on industrial products (System on Module FPGA’s), has higher integration and lower power consumption. In this contribution, the conceptual design of the new electronics is presented. The results of the very first tests of the pre-production electronics are presented as well as future perspectives.

- Abstract
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess whether navigated flapless transmucosal implant bed preparation allows placement of dental implants in edentulous mandibles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Each patient was scheduled to receive 4 screw-shaped Ankylos (Dentsply Friadent) implants in the interforaminal region. The VISIT navigation system was used for guided drilling. The mucosa was penetrated without flap elevation. The study protocol did not allow direct visualization of the bone surface during surgery. Data analysis included computed measurements on pre- and postoperative computerized tomographic (CT) images. RESULTS: Twenty patients with fully edentulous mandibles (14 male, 6 female) were included in the study. Computer-based planning for 80 implants was performed intraoperatively. Two implants (2.5%) were not primarily stable because of buccal bone fenestration, which occurred because of uncontrollable shifting of the dental implant drill. These implants were immediately removed. Postoperative CT image evaluation revealed a mean deviation of 0.7 mm in all directions. CONCLUSIONS: Navigated flapless transmucosal interforaminal implant placement was found to be a precise, predictable, safe procedure in patients with smooth wide regular mandibular ridges. The technique was less accurate and more complicated in areas where irregular bone existed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
PURPOSE: The aim of this prospective randomized study was to compare the clinical accuracy of and surgical time required for mandibular dental implant placement with 2 computer-assisted navigation systems using pre- and postoperative computerized tomographic (CT) data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 16 patients with edentulous mandibles, 4 interforaminal implants per patient were placed with computer-assisted navigation. The implant bed was prepared by transmucosal drilling without mucosal punching. Patients were randomly allocated to either the VISIT navigation system (32 implants; 8 patients) or the Medtronic StealthStation Treon navigation system (32 implants; 8 patients). Pre- and postoperative CT scans were matched using the normalized mutual information 3D registration algorithm to compare preplanned and final implant positions. Operation room time was recorded from start of preoperative preparations to end of surgery. RESULTS: All implants were placed as planned; there were no intra- or postoperative complications. Average implant deviation errors of 0.7 mm and 0.9 mm were recorded for the VISIT and StealthStation Treon navigation systems, respectively. Timing revealed an average operation room time of 81.3 +/- 15.8 minutes for the VISIT navigation system and 60 +/- 10.4 minutes for the StealthStation Treon navigation system. CONCLUSIONS: The accuracy of implant bed preparation and placement was similar in both systems. Both navigation systems are equally precise in a clinical environment. However, total operation room time was 25% shorter with the StealthStation Treon navigation system, probably because of the faster tracking system update rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

18. Preliminary report on a staged ridge splitting technique for implant placement in the mandible: a technical note.

- Abstract
PURPOSE: Narrow edentulous alveolar ridges less than 5 mm wide require horizontal augmentation for the placement of screw-type dental implants. A staged approach to ridge splitting in the mandible to decrease the risk of malfracture during osteotomy is presented. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five consecutive patients with 6 long-span edentulous areas of the mandibular ridge were included in this study. After corticotomy of a rectangular buccal segment and a 40-day healing period, the mandibular ridge was split, leaving the buccal periosteum attached to the lateralized segment. Seventeen dental implants were placed, and the gap between the implants and the bone filled with a mixture of venous blood and a porous algae-derived hydroxyapatite. RESULTS: All buccal segments fractured as planned at the basal corticotomy during ridge splitting. After 6 months, all implants were stable and surrounded by bone; prosthetic loading with fixed partial dentures was successful in all cases. DISCUSSION: In the mandible, greenstick fracture during widening with osteotomes has not been controllable to date because of cortical thickness of the bone; the risk of malfracture during single-stage ridge splitting was high. With this approach, the location of the greenstick fracture is predetermined, and the perfusion for the buccal segment remains intact, although vascularization shifts from internal perfusion from spongy bone after the first intervention to external perfusion from the periosteum after the second intervention. The buccal cortical segment remains a pedicled graft after ridge splitting. CONCLUSION: The preliminary results of this report indicate that staged ridge splitting can be a safe technique which overcomes the problems associated with single-stage ridge expansion/ridge splitting procedures without causing significant delay in treatment. - Abstract
The realisation of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterisation of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximise its science output. The paper reviews all the achievements made in the AGATA project including all the necessary infrastructure to operate and support the spectrometer.

International audience; Following a presentation of the role of numbers and measures in the evaluation of scientific journals, adequate statistical and mathematical indicators are described for some traditional "paper" journals in information science and in communication science. These indicators can be used to improve the impact and the audience of these journals. With new electronic journals, it is easier to determine these indicators. The results of the first statistical study dealing with information science electronic journals is presented.

- Abstract
The Erwinia amylovora incursion in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne (RBGM) in autumn 1997 cost the Australian pome fruit and nursery industries an estimated A$20 million in lost revenue. The cost of the national orchard and urban surveys, eradication programs, diagnostics, and media management was estimated at A$2.2 million and involved some 250 people. As a result of the E. amylovora incursion in the RBGM, an imposition of interstate trade on the movement of host plants and related produce was enforced. These restrictions cost the Victorian pome fruit and nursery industries around A$7 million in lost sales and depressed prices. International trade was also suspended in some instances and the Tasmanian industry application for access to the Japanese apple market was delayed for two years and cost an estimated A$10 million in lost sales. Prior to and since the RBGM incursion a number of research projects have been commissioned, at a cost of A$0.5 million, to formulate detailed contingency plans and diagnostic protocols and improve awareness and Australia’s preparedness for the next E. amylovora incident. The economic impact of a fire blight outbreak in Australia’s largest pome fruit growing district (Goulburn Valley, Victoria) was calculated using a dynamic multi-regional computable general equilibrium program of Australia called TERM (The Enormous Regional Model) (Horridge et al., 2003). Two separate scenarios were considered. In the first scenario an outbreak with 30% yield losses is eradicated in five years and results in losses of A$260 million. In the second scenario an outbreak is not eradicated and pome fruit output in the Goulburn Valley declines by 50% for pears and 20% for apples and results in losses of A$870 million in net present value.

- Abstract
The present study uses a dynamic multiregional computable general equilibrium (CGE) model to estimate the micro- and macroeconomic effects of a hypothetical disease or pest outbreak. Our example is a Karnal bunt incursion in wheat in Western Australia. The extent of the incursion, the impact of the disease or pest on plant yields, the response of buyers, the costs of eradication and the time path of the scenario contribute to outcomes at the industry, regional, state and national levels. We decompose the contribution of these individual direct effects to the overall impact of the incursion. This might provide some guidance regarding areas for priority in attempting to eradicate or minimise the impacts of a disease or pest. The study also introduces a theory of dynamic regional labour adjustment in which economic events may lead to both real wage differentials and worker migration between regions.

- Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical outcome of fractures of the atrophic mandible based on the degree of atrophy and treatment by different plating systems.Patients and Methods: Thirty patients with 40 fractures of atrophic mandibles were treated by open reduction and internal fixation at our department between 1994 and 2001. Twelve fractures occurred in Class I (between 15- and 20-mm bone height), 10 fractures in Class II (between 10 and 15 mm), and 18 fractures in Class III atrophy (<10 mm). The profile heights of plating systems used for stabilization varied from 0.5 to 2.2 mm and were applied with an intraoral (n = 37) and extraoral (n = 3) approach. Results: In 36 fractures, bone healing was uneventful. Major complications (loose hardware or nonunion) occurred in 4 fractures: 2 in Class II and 2 in Class III atrophy. Major complications were observed with 1.4-mm (n = 3) and 2.2-mm (n = 1) plates. Minor complications (infections or dehiscence) were observed in 6 fractures: 3 in Class II and 3 in Class III atrophy. Hypesthesia of the inferior alveolar nerve was present 1 week and 1 year postoperatively in 39 and 16 fractures, respectively. Conclusions: Treatment of atrophic mandible fractures should be based on the degree of atrophy. More rigid fixation may be necessary in mandibles with less than 15 mm bone height. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
PurposeBone tissue engineering is a promising approach for the treatment of defective or lost bone in the maxillofacial region. Biocompatible and biodegradable scaffolds seeded with living cells are used to create functional tissue for load-bearing bone reconstruction. The aim of this study was to manufacture cell-seeded 3-dimensional bone constructs based on hydroxyapatite ceramic granule calcified from red algae and mesenchymal cambial-layer precursor cells. The ability of these cells to grow on hydroxyapatite ceramic was quantitatively investigated to evaluate 3-dimensional bone constructs for their potential use in bone tissue engineering.Materials and methodsMesenchymal cambial-layer precursor cells were isolated from mandibular periosteum biopsy samples of 3 patients. To manufacture 72 bone constructs, these cells and hydroxyapatite ceramic granules (C GRAFT/Algipore; Clinician's Preference LLC, Golden, CO) were cultivated under osteogenic differentiation conditions in a rotating wall vessel system. After 6 and 21 days, histologic examination and scanning electron microscopy were performed. The absolute DNA content, protein synthesis, and alkaline phosphatase activity were also quantified. The osteoblastic phenotype of the constructs was confirmed by the expression of bone-specific genes (osteocalcin, osteonectin, osteopontin, and core binding factor @a1) using semiquantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis.ResultsCells within the constructs showed good viability, which was evidenced by an increase in DNA content over the culture period. The decrease in alkaline phosphatase-specific activity could be an indicator of the maturation of cells and the induction of mineralization. The osteoblastic phenotype of the constructs was demonstrated on protein and at the RNA level over the entire culture period.ConclusionWe observed a positive effect of hydroxyapatite ceramic granules on mesenchymal cambial-layer precursor cell behavior in cell-seeded 3-dimensional bone constructs, indicating the potential applicability of C GRAFT/Algipore composites in bone tissue engineering.
