What has worked, and what hasn’t, in creating sustainable approaches to the acquisition and preservation of digital artifacts? What sorts of collaborations have been most productive? What evolutions in technology have been most fruitful? What has changed about what we do, how we do it, what we preserve, and to what unexpected uses is it put? What challenges lie ahead, and what work still needs to be done? This panel will provide an opportunity for sharing experiences, lessons learned, successes, and failures, and discussion regarding technical, policy, operational, and business aspects of preservation, as well as assessments of what has changed over time and what to expect in the coming years. Our goal is to elicit a distillation of panelists’ collective experience, both within and across their institutions and their various collaborations, as a starting point for eliciting shared experience, discussion, exploration, and reflection from the audience. We hope that sharing the extensive knowledge and diverse experiences of our panelists will provide participants with information and perspectives that will prove valuable in their own work and organizations.

This project contains documentation describing the RMap Project including the grant proposal, use cases, and communication materials. The RMap Project was an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation-funded initiative undertaken by the Data Conservancy, Portico, and IEEE. The goal of the RMap Project was to produce a prototype framework that makes it possible to preserve the many-to-many complex relationships among scholarly publications and their underlying data, thereby supporting the continual development of scholarly communication and digital publishing.

The advance in technologies for publishing digital scholarship has outpaced the development of technologies for reliably preserving it. Authors and publishers are creating increasingly sophisticated products without realizing that some of their enhancement choices might put preservability--and valuable scholarship--at risk. The poster describes the in-progress work and findings of a collaboration between preservation organizations, libraries, and publishers that are creating enhanced digital publications. The work aims to identify what can be effectively preserved with existing technologies, and to produce a recommended set of practices to help authors and publishers prioritize and plan their enhanced digital products for maximum preservability.

There has been tremendous growth in the amount of digital content created by libraries, publishers, cultural institutions and the general public. While there are great benefits to having content available in digital form, digital objects can be extremely short-lived unless proper attention is paid to preservation. In this webinar, taking place onWorld Digital Preservation Day, current trends in digital preservation arediscussed byKate WittenbergandJavanica Curry(bothfrom the digital preservation servicePortico) andNicola Wright, Director of LSE Library. Kate and Javanicareflect on their experience with Portico, including background on Portico’s history and evolving practice of sustainable preservation of the scholarly record.They also look at the digital preservation landscape as they see it now, sharing thoughts on current requirements for preservation and the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Nicoladiscusses the motivations and experience of the LSE Library towards digital preservation and involvement with Portico.

How should we be rethinking the research library in a swiftly changing information landscape? In February 2008, CLIR convened 25 leading librarians, publishers, faculty members, and information technology specialists to consider this question. Participants discussed the challenges and opportunities that libraries are likely to face in the next five to ten years, and how changes in scholarly communication will affect the future library. Essays by eight of the participants-Paul Courant, Andrew Dillon, Rick Luce, Stephen Nichols, Daphnée Rentfrow, Abby Smith, Kate Wittenberg, and Lee Zia-were circulated to participants in advance and provided background for the conversation. This report contains these background essays as well as a summary of the meeting.
