1. Designing for Self-awareness: Supporting Students’ Reflexive Interactions Based on Photos

Abstract

Educators in professional higher education experience difficulties addressing students' self-awareness in their courses. The topic is often dismissed by students as vague' or irrelevant'. This is detrimental for learning since knowing who you are and who you want to be is crucial: it guides behaviour and helps to feel balanced and in control. Support is needed to trigger students' self-awareness and to make this process less demanding. In this paper we present guidelines for interactive triggers supporting students in developing their self-awareness. We asked students to discuss self-made photos in small groups and offered them three paper prototypes of triggers to work with. Questionnaire results and analysis of students' discussions resulted in insights on how these triggers provoke distinct interaction and support self-awareness. Insights in advantages and disadvantages of the triggers can be used to design and implement innovative interactive systems that engage students in the process of developing self-awareness.

Abstract

This article contributes to ongoing conversations about how we relate to methods and the implications of the ‘methods turn’ for the different epistemic communities that comprise media studies. We argue that methods are increasingly valued as scientific capital and educational capital, leading to further formalisation of methodologies (or theoretical perspectives) as ordered and sequenced research methods. Although intended to make research more transparent and accessible, such formalisation obfuscates the research process when it hinges on the notion of methods as ‘ordered procedure’. Against this way of imagining and talking about methods, we draw on process theory, which provides a language for understanding research as improvisational and creative, and reconsider what it means to do research skilfully. Understanding methods as process opens up new ways to talk about and teach methods that connect to our inherent capacity for curiosity and to embodied sense-making practices – in other words, it allows for a reframing of research methods as ‘methods we live by’.

Journalism worldwide is in a process of becoming a different kind of profession. Once organized in formal institutions, where contracted labourers would produce content under informal yet highly structured working conditions, today the lived experience of professional journalists is much more precarious, fragmented and networked. At the heart of the project of understanding contemporary journalism as a profession and the way it functions in society must be a conceptualization of journalism beyond its formerly distinct and boundaried organization of newswork.

7. Big data analysis

Abstract

‘Big data’ is a current buzzword in the media and communication industries, and in the disciplines that study them, much as ‘Web 2.0’ was in the 1990s. ‘Big data analytics’ is rapidly emerging as a field of research and development, drawing on increasingly rich, increasingly widely available datasets on facets of contemporary life ranging from climate change through economic performance to social media activity. Journalism is caught up in the surge towards ‘big data’ in two ways: as a driver of innovation, through the development of new journalistic specializations currently operating under names such as data journalism or computational journalism; and as an object of analysis, with data on the performance of journalists and news organizations (especially on the public response to their work through social media) being used to justify decisions to increase or decrease staff and funding. This chapter explores the uses of ‘big data’ in the latter sense, as tools in journalism research, and identifies the threats and opportunities inherent in such developments. It highlights major advances in the field, and shows how the tracking of ‘big data’ on the public resonance of journalistic work provides new evidence about the actual role of journalism in the wider public sphere, beyond normative dogma. At the same time, the chapter also highlights the potential threats which emerge from a strongly quantitative, data-driven turn in journalism research: for example, from the pursuit of strong popularity metrics at the expense of journalistic quality.

8. Improvisation and Entrepreneurial Journalism: Reimagining Innovation.

Abstract

With the rise of innovation and entrepreneurship as avenues for journalists to take in their search for journalistic work, we need to critically interrogate how these terms are understood. Various journalism institutions are pushing a particular understanding of journalism, and of what constitutes meaningful and innovative journalism. In this paper, we review the literature on these themes and draw on experimental research done by one of the authors to argue for a more process-oriented approach to journalistic innovation and entrepreneurship. As a researcher-maker, one of the authors created an innovative journalistic project and tried to develop a business model for this project. She participated in an accelerator process organised by one of the main funds aimed at journalism innovation in the Netherlands. We show that one existing, and prevalent, understanding of innovation in journalism is one that is linear, rational and outcome-oriented. We challenge this understanding and draw on process-oriented theories of innovation to introduce the concepts of effectuation, improvisation and becoming as new lenses to reconsider these phenomena. 9. Beyond journalism: Theorizing the transformation of journalism.

Abstract

Journalism has enjoyed a rich and relatively stable history of professionalization. Scholars coming from a variety of disciplines have theorized this history, forming a consistent body of knowledge codified in national and international handbooks and canonical readers. However, recent work and analysis suggest that the supposed core of journalism and the assumed consistency of the inner workings of news organizations are problematic starting points for journalism studies. In this article, we challenge the consensual (self-)presentation of journalism - in terms of its occupational ideology, its professional culture, and its sedimentation in routines and organizational structures (cf. the newsroom) in the context of its reconfiguration as a post-industrial , entrepreneurial , and atypical way of working and of being at work. We outline a way beyond individualist or institutional approaches to do justice to the current complex transformation of the profession. We propose a framework to bring together these approaches in a dialectic attempt to move through and beyond journalism as it has traditionally been conceptualized and practiced, allowing for a broader definition and understanding of the myriad of practices that make up journalism.
