Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT) is developing Thailand- 1 (TT-1) from a former device HT-6 M of China. The first hydrogen plasma will be initiated in 2023. To investigate high-β plasma and physics related to fast ions, TT-1 will be equipped with auxiliary heating systems. In this work, a feasibility study for installing a neutral beam injection (NBI) heating system in TT-1 is carried out. This work is motivated to characterize beam ion's orbits in different injection angles and to explore a condition suitable in terms of higher heating efficiency. In this work, we assume that a hydrogen beam will be launched into the TT-1 plasma with an acceleration voltage of 20 kV. The orbit simulations using the gyromotion following code LORBIT are performed in various magnetic field equilibria, i.e., different plasma current (Ip), toroidal magnetic field strength (Bt), and the magnetic axis (Rax). Furthermore, beam ions are injected in different directions, i.e., tangential co-injection and tangential counter-injection. In the case of co-injection, beam ion loss is not significant, by about 6%, whereas beam ion loss fraction is evaluated to be 26–34% in the case of counter-injection. Also, it is found that the number of lost beam ions is significantly affected by changing Ip and Rax. The results obtained in this work will directly support the experiment plan for the high-performance plasmas, design of the fast-ion diagnostic system, and systematic understanding of beam ion's confinement property and beam-ion-driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities in TT-1.

Successful operation of a tokamak relies on effective and appropriate methods of plasma fueling. The development plan of Thailand Tokamak-1 (TT-1) will employ the supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) which delivers the fueling gas more effectively and deeper than the gas puffing method. In this work, we study the effect of SMBI on the plasma transport of TT-1 plasma by using 3D fluid simulation. The model includes the continuity equation, energy balance equation, momentum equation, continuity of fuel equation, and momentum of fuel. BOUT++ is then used to solve these equations by a finite difference method with the field-aligned coordinates in the edge region. The simulation shows that when hydrogen fuel gas is by the SMBI method from the low-field side into the plasma with a speed of 1000 m/s, the electron density in the edge locally rises as a result of the dissociation and ionization. The ion and electron temperatures then drop. After that, the density spread over the whole plasma volume within about 10 ms. When the injection speed increases, it results in a deeper penetration length of the fuel deposition.

Describing microstructure evolution in nanocrystalline tungsten requires a quantitative description of the anisotropic grain boundary energy. We present a grain boundary energy function for tungsten that specifies the energy of an arbitrary boundary given its five macroscopic crystallographic parameters. A comparison of measured grain boundary areas and the grain boundary energies given by the function at the Σ11, Σ17b, and Σ33a mis-orientations, which are problematic to determine by measurement or atomistic calculations, reveals inverse correlations that are similar to what have been observed in microcrystalline metals.

We report results of benchmarking of core particle transport simulations by a collection of codes widely used in transport modelling of tokamak plasmas. Our analysis includes formulation of transport equations, difference between electron and ion solvers, comparison of modules of the pellet and edge gas fuelling on the ITER baseline scenario. During the first phase of benchmarking we address the particle transport effects in the stationary phase. Firstly, simulations are performed with identical sources, sinks, transport coefficients, and boundary conditions prescribed in the flattop H-mode phase. The transformation of ion particle transport equations is introduced so to directly compare their results to electron transport solvers. Secondly, the pellet fuelling models are benchmarked in various conditions to evaluate the dependency of the pellet deposition on the pellet volume, injection side, pedestal, and separatrix parameters. Thirdly, edge gas fuelling is benchmarked to assess sensitivities of source profile predictions to uncertainties in plasma conditions and detailed model assumptions. At the second phase, we address particle transport effects in the time- evolving plasma including the current ramp-up to the ramp-down phase. The ion and the electron solvers are benchmarked together. Differences between the simulation results of the solvers are investigated in terms of equilibrium, grid resolution, radial coordinate, radial grid distribution, and plasma volume evolution term. We found that the selection of the radial coordinate can yield prominent differences between the solvers mainly due to differences in the edge grid distribution. The simulations reveal that electron and ion solvers predict noticeably different density peaking for the same diffusion and pinch velocity while with the peaked profile of helium, expected in fusion reactors. The fuelling benchmarking shows that gas puffing is not efficient for core fuelling in H-modes and density control should be done by the high field side pellet injection in contrast to present machines.

The heterogeneous elastoplastic deformation of structural glasses is explored using the framework of the random first-order transition theory of the glass transition along with an extended mode-coupling theory that includes activated events. The theory involves coupling the continuum elastic theory of strain transport with mobility generation and transport as described in the theory of glass aging and rejuvenation. Fluctuations that arise from the generation and transport of mobility, fictive temperature, and stress are treated explicitly. We examine the nonlinear flow of a glass under deformation at finite strain rate. The interplay among the fluctuating fields leads to the spatially heterogeneous dislocation of the particles in the glass, i.e., the appearance of shear bands of the type observed in metallic glasses deforming under mechanical stress.

As Thailand has been preparing to operate a small tokamak in which the device will be upgraded from HT-6M tokamak, the quantitative information about the plasma in the edge and at the surface of a limiter would be insightful for planning future experimental operations. In this work, we employ an extended two-point model to investigate the particle and heat exhausted from the core to the limiter for the tokamak with nominal parameters of HT-6M. The model assumes that the transports of heat and particle from the core enter the scrape-off layer at the outer midplane (upstream point). They then travel to the limiter along the magnetic field line. In this scrape-off layer region, both the conductive and convective transport are considered. The particle sources are only present near the limiter and the conservation of momentum is assumed. Thus, in the steady state, the transport equations can be reduced to a set of nonlinear equations that relates the density and temperature at the upstream to those at the limiter. For Thailand Tokamak, as the density at the upstream point is increased from 0.1 × 1019 to 3.5 × 1019 m−3 and power through separatrix is 0.2 MW, it is found that the electron temperature at the limiter surface is reduce from 250 to 10 eV. When the upstream density is greater than 2.7 × 1019 m−3, the particle flux reaching to the limiter significantly decreases in which this suggests for the plasma detachment.

Impacts of pellets injected from the low-field side (LFS) on plasma in ITER are investigated using the 1.5D BALDUR integrated predictive modeling code. In these simulations, the pellet ablation is described using the neutral gas shielding (NGS) model. The pellet ablation model is coupled with the plasma core transport model, which is a combination of the MMM95 anomalous transport model and NCLASS neoclassical transport model. The boundary conditions are assumed to be at the top of the pedestal, in which the pedestal parameters are predicted using a pedestal model based on the theoretical-based pedestal width scaling (either magnetic and flow shear stabilization width scaling, or flow shear stabilization width scaling, or normalized poloidal pressure width scaling) and the infinite-n ballooning mode pressure gradient limit. These pedestal models depend sensitively on the density at the top of the pedestal, which can be strongly influenced by the injection of pellets. The combination of the MMM95 and NCLASS models, together with the pedestal and NGS models, is used to simulate the time evolution of the plasma current, ion and electron temperatures, and density profiles for ITER standard type-I ELMy H-mode discharges during the injection of LFS pellets. It is found that the injection of pellets results in a complicated plasma scenario, especially in the outer region of the plasma and the plasma conditions at the boundary in which the pellet has an impact on increasing the plasma edge density, but reducing the plasma edge temperature. The LFS pellet has a stronger impact on the edge as compared to the center. For fusion performance, the pellet can result in either enhancement or degradation, depending sensitively on the pellet parameters; such as the pellet size, pellet velocity, and pellet frequency. For example, when a series of deuterium pellets with a size of 0.5 cm, velocity of 1 km/s, and frequency of 2 Hz are injected into the ITER plasma from the LFS, the plasma performance, evaluated in terms of Q fusion, can increase to 72% of that before the use of pellets. It is also found that the injection of pellets results in an increase in the ion and electron densities, but does not enhance the central plasma density. On the other hand, it results in the formation of another peak of the plasma density in the outer region near the plasma edge. The formation of the density peak results in the reduction of plasma transports near the edge by decreasing the contributions of ion-temperature-gradient and trapped electron modes, as well as kinetic ballooning modes.

We compare dynamical heterogeneities in equilibrated supercooled liquids and in the nonequilibrium glassy state within the framework of the random first order transition theory. Fluctuating mobility generation and transport in the glass are treated by numerically solving stochastic continuum equations for mobility and fictive temperature fields that arise from an extended mode coupling theory containing activated events. Fluctuating spatiotemporal structures in aging and rejuvenating glasses lead to dynamical heterogeneity in glasses with characteristics distinct from those found in the equilibrium supercooled liquid. The non-Gaussian distribution of activation free energies, the stretching exponent β, and the growth of characteristic lengths are studied along with the four-point dynamical correlation function. Asymmetric thermodynamic responses upon heating and cooling are predicted to be the result of the heterogeneity and the out-of-equilibrium behavior of glasses below Tg. Our numerical results agree with experimental calorimetry. We numerically confirm the prediction of Lubchenko and Wolynes in the glass that the dynamical heterogeneity can lead to noticeably bimodal distributions of local fictive temperatures during some histories of preparation which explains in a unified way recent experimental observations that have been interpreted as coming from there being two distinct equilibration mechanisms in glasses.

In the context of the random first order transition theory we use an extended mode coupling theory of the glass transition that includes activated events to account for spatiotemporal structures in aging and rejuvenating glasses. We numerically solve fluctuating dynamical equations for mobility and fictive temperature fields which capture both mobility generation through activated events and facilitation effects. Upon rejuvenating, a source of high mobility at a glass surface initiates a growth front of mobility which propagates into the unstable low mobility region. The speed of the front is consistent with experiments on the rejuvenation of stable glasses, which "melt" from their surface., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Self-consistent simulations of four DEMO designs proposed by teams from China, Europe, India, and Korea are carried out using the BALDUR integrated predictive modeling code in which theory-based models are used, for both core transport and boundary conditions. In these simulations, a combination of the NCLASS neoclassical transport and multimode (MMM95) anomalous transport model is used to compute a core transport. The boundary is taken to be at the top of the pedestal, where the pedestal values are described using a pedestal temperature model based on a combination of magnetic and flow shear stabilization, pedestal width scaling and an infinite- n ballooning pressure gradient model and a pedestal density model based on a line average density. Even though an optimistic scenario is considered, the simulation results suggest that, with the exclusion of ELMs, the fusion gain Q obtained for these reactors is pessimistic compared to their original designs, i.e. 52% for the Chinese design, 63% for the European design, 22% for the Korean design, and 26% for the Indian design. In addition, the predicted bootstrap current fractions are also found to be lower than their original designs, as fractions of their original designs, i.e. 0.49 (China), 0.66 (Europe), and 0.58 (India). Furthermore, in relation to sensitivity, it is found that increasing values of the auxiliary heating power and the electron line average density from their design values yield an enhancement of fusion performance. In addition, inclusion of sawtooth oscillation effects demonstrate positive impacts on the plasma and fusion performance in European, Indian and Korean DEMOs, but degrade the performance in the Chinese DEMO.

The remarkable strength of glasses is examined using the random first order transition theory of the glass transition. The theory predicts that strength depends on elastic modulus but also on the configurational energy frozen in when the glass is prepared. The stress catalysis of cooperative rearrangements of the type responsible for the supercooled liquid's high viscosity account quantitatively for the measured strength of a range of metallic glasses, silica and a polymer glass., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures
