We investigate the effect of focused-ion-beam (FIB) irradiation on spin waves with sub-micron wavelengths in Yttrium-Iron-Garnet (YIG) films. Time-resolved scanning transmission X-ray (TR-STXM) microscopy was used to image the spin waves in irradiated regions and deduce corresponding changes in the magnetic parameters of the film. We find that the changes of Ga$^+$ irradiation can be understood by assuming a few percent change in the effective magnetization $M_\mathrm{eff}$ of the film due to a trade-off between changes in anisotropy and effective film thickness. Our results demonstrate that FIB irradiation can be used to locally alter the dispersion relation and the effective refractive index $n_\textrm{eff}$ of the film, even for submicron wavelengths. To achieve the same change in $n_\textrm{eff}$ for shorter wavelengths, a higher dose is required, but no significant deterioration of spin wave propagation length in the irradiated regions was observed, even at the highest applied doses., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

We present a study on the static magnetic properties of individual $\text{GaAs}$-$\text{Fe}_{\text{33}}\text{Co}_{\text{67}}$ core-shell nanorods. X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism combined with Photoemission Electron Microscopy (XMCD-PEEM) and Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy (STXM) were used to investigate the magnetic nanostructures. The magnetic layer is purposely designed to establish a magnetic easy axis neither along a high symmetry nor mirror axes to promote 3D magnetic helical order on the curved surface. In practice, two types of magnetic textures with in-plane magnetization were found inside the nanostructures' facets: magnetic domains with almost longitudinal or almost perpendicular magnetization with respect to the axis of the tube. We observe that a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the long axis of the nanostructure can add an azimuthal component of the magnetization to the previously almost longitudinal magnetization.

The cubic $\beta$-Mn-type alloy Co$_8$Zn$_8$Mn$_4$ is a chiral helimagnet that exhibits a peculiar temperature-dependent behavior in the spiral pitch, which decreases from 130 nm at room temperature to 70 nm below 20 K. Notably, this shortening is also accompanied by a structural transition of the metastable skyrmion texture, transforming from a hexagonal lattice to a square lattice of elongated skyrmions. The underlying mechanism of these transformations remain unknown, with interactions potentially involved including temperature-dependent Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, magnetocrystalline anisotropy, and exchange anisotropy. Here, x-ray resonant magnetic small-angle scattering in vectorial magnetic fields was employed to investigate the temperature dependence of the anisotropic properties of the helical phase in Co$_8$Zn$_8$Mn$_4$. Our results reveal quantitatively that the magnitude of the anisotropic exchange interaction increases by a factor of 4 on cooling from room temperature to 20 K, leading to a 5% variation in the helical pitch within the (001) plane at 20 K. While anisotropic exchange interaction contributes to the shortening of the spiral pitch, its magnitude is insufficient to explain the variation in the spiral periodicity from room to low temperatures. Despite the many recent achievements in developing and deploying social robotics, there are still many underexplored environments and applications for which systematic evaluation of such systems by end-users is necessary. While several robotic platforms have been used in gerontological healthcare, the question of whether or not a social interactive robot with multi-modal conversational capabilities will be useful and accepted in real-life facilities is yet to be answered. This paper is an attempt to partially answer this question, via two waves of experiments with patients and companions in a day-care gerontological facility in Paris with a full-sized humanoid robot endowed with social and conversational interaction capabilities. The software architecture, developed during the H2020 SPRING project, together with the experimental protocol, allowed us to evaluate the acceptability (AES) and usability (SUS) with more than 60 end-users. Overall, the users are receptive to this technology, especially when the robot perception and action skills are robust to environmental clutter and flexible to handle a plethora of different interactions.

The efficient excitation of spin waves is a key challenge in the realization of magnonic devices. We demonstrate the current-driven generation of spin waves in antiferromagnetically coupled magnetic vortices. We employ time-resolved scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (TR-STXM) to directly image the emission of spin waves upon the application of an alternating current flowing directly through the magnetic stack. Micromagnetic simulations allow us to identify the origin of the excitation to be the current-driven Oersted field, which in the present system proves to be orders of magnitude more efficient than the commonly used excitation via stripline antennas. Our numerical studies also reveal that the spin-transfer torque can lead to the emission of spin waves as well, yet only at much higher current amplitudes. By using magnetostrictive materials, we futhermore demonstrate that the direction of the magnon propagation can be steered by increasing the excitation amplitude, which modifies the underlying magnetization profile through an additional anisotropy in the magnetic layers. Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures which are envisioned as nanometre scale information carriers in magnetic memory and logic devices. The recent demonstration of room temperature stabilization of skyrmions and their current induced manipulation in industry compatible ultrathin films were first steps towards the realisation of such devices. However, important challenges remain regarding the electrical detection and the low-power nucleation of skyrmions, which are required for the read and write operations. Here, we demonstrate, using operando magnetic microscopy experiments, the electrical detection of a single magnetic skyrmion in a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) and its nucleation and annihilation by gate voltage via voltage control of magnetic anisotropy. The nucleated skyrmion can be further manipulated by both gate voltage and external magnetic field, leading to tunable intermediate resistance states. Our results unambiguously demonstrate the readout and voltage controlled write operations in a single MTJ device, which is a major milestone for low power skyrmion based technologies.

The asymmetry of spin-wave patterns in confined rectangular Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ microstrips, both in single and double-strip geometries, is quantified. The results of TR-STXM and micromagnetic simulations are compared. For the TR-STXM measurements and the corresponding simulations the excitation was a uniform microwave field with a fixed frequency of 9.43 GHz, while the external static magnetic field was swept. In the easy axis orientation of the analyzed microstrip, the results show a higher asymmetry for the double microstrip design, indicating an influence of the additional microstrip placed in close proximity to the analyzed one.

Isolated magnetic skyrmions are stable, topologically protected spin textures that are at the forefront of research interests today due to their potential applications in information technology. A distinct class of skyrmion hosts are rare earth - transition metal (RE-TM) ferrimagnetic materials. To date, the nature and the control of basic traits of skyrmions in these materials are not fully understood. We show that for an archetypal ferrimagnetic material DyCo$_3$ that exhibits a strong perpendicular anisotropy, the ferrimagnetic skyrmion size can be tuned by an external magnetic field. Moreover, by taking advantage of the high spatial resolution of scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) and utilizing a large x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) contrast that occurs naturally at the RE resonant edges, we resolve the nature of the magnetic domain walls of ferrimagnetic skyrmions. We demonstrate that through this method one can easily discriminate between Bloch and N\'eel type domain walls for each individual skyrmion. For all isolated ferrimagnetic skyrmions, we observe that the domain walls are of N\'eel-type. This key information is corroborated with results of micromagnetic simulations and allows us to conclude on the nature of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) which concurs to the stabilisation of skyrmions in this ferrimagnetic system. Antiferromagnets have recently been propelled to the forefront of spintronics by their high potential for revolutionizing memory technologies. For this, understanding the formation and driving mechanisms of the domain structure is paramount. In this work, we investigate the domain structure in a thin-film canted antiferromagnet $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$. We find that the internal destressing fields driving the formation of domains do not follow the crystal symmetry of $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$, but fluctuate due to substrate clamping. This leads to an overall isotropic distribution of the N\'eel order with locally varying effective anisotropy in antiferromagnetic thin films. Furthermore, we show that the weak ferromagnetic nature of $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ leads to a qualitatively different dependence on magnetic field compared to collinear antiferromagnets such as NiO. In ferromagnetic multilayers, a single laser pulse with a fluence above an optical nucleation threshold can create magnetic skyrmions, which are randomly distributed over the area of the laser spot. However, in order to study the dynamics of skyrmions and for their application in future data technology, a controllable localization of the skyrmion nucleation sites is crucial. Here, it is demonstrated that patterned reflective masks behind a thin magnetic film can be designed to locally tailor the optical excitation amplitudes reached, leading to spatially controlled skyrmion nucleation on the nanometer scale. Using x-ray microscopy, the influence of nanopatterned back-side aluminum masks on the optical excitation is studied in two sample geometries with varying layer sequence of substrate and magnetic Co/Pt multilayer. Surprisingly, the masks' effect on suppressing or enhancing skymion nucleation reverses when changing this sequence. Moreover, optical near-field enhancements additionally affect the spatial arrangement of the nucleated skyrmions. Simulations of the spatial modulation of the laser excitation, and the following heat transfer across the interfaces in the two sample geometries are employed to explain these observations. The results demonstrate a reliable approach to add nanometer-scale spatial control to optically induced magnetization processes on ultrafast timescales.

Magnetic skyrmions are quasiparticles with non-trivial topology, envisioned to play a key role in next-generation data technology while simultaneously attracting fundamental research interest due to their emerging topological charge. In chiral magnetic multilayers, current-generated spin-orbit torques or ultrafast laser excitation can be used to nucleate isolated skyrmions on a picosecond timescale. Both methods, however, produce randomly arranged skyrmions, which inherently limits the precision on the location at which the skyrmions are nucleated. Here, we show that nanopatterning of the anisotropy landscape with a He$^+$-ion beam creates well-defined skyrmion nucleation sites, thereby transforming the skyrmion localization into a deterministic process. This approach allows to realize control of individual skyrmion nucleation as well as guided skyrmion motion with nanometer-scale precision, which is pivotal for both future fundamental studies of skyrmion dynamics and applications.

Superfluidity and superconductivity are macroscopic manifestations of quantum mechanics, which have fascinated scientists since their discoveries roughly a century ago. Ever since the initial theories of such quantum fluids were formulated, there has been speculation as to the possibility of multi-component quantum order. A particularly simple multi-component condensate is built from particles occupying different quantum states, or bands, prior to condensation. The particles in one or both bands may undergo condensation, as seen for certain solids and anticipated for certain cold atom systems. For bulk solids, the different bands always order simultaneously, with conventional pairing characterized by complex order parameters describing the condensates in each band. Another type of condensate, notably occurring at room temperature, has been identified for magnons, the magnetic analogue of lattice vibrations, injected by microwaves into yttrium iron garnet. Here we show that magnon quantization for thin samples results in a new multi-band magnon condensate. We establish a phase diagram, as a function of microwave drive power and frequency relative to the magnon bands, revealing both single and multi-band condensation. The most stable multi-band condensate is found in a narrow regime favoured on account of a resonance in the scattering between two bands. Our discovery introduces a flexible non-equilibrium platform operating at room temperature for a well-characterised material, exploiting a Feshbach-like resonance, for examining multi-band phenomena. It points to qualitatively new ways to engineer and control condensates and superconducting states in multiband systems and potential devices containing multiple interacting condensates.

Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures that hold great promise as nanoscale information carriers in non-volatile memory and logic devices. While room-temperature magnetic skyrmions and their current-induced manipulation were recently demonstrated, the stray field resulting from their finite magnetization as well as their topological charge limit their minimum size and reliable motion in tracks. Antiferromagnetic (AF) skyrmions allow these limitations to be lifted owing to their vanishing magnetization and net zero topological charge, promising room-temperature, ultrasmall skyrmions, fast dynamics, and insensitivity to external magnetic fields. While room-temperature AF spin textures have been recently demonstrated, the observation and controlled nucleation of AF skyrmions operable at room temperature in industry-compatible synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) material systems is still lacking. Here we demonstrate that isolated skyrmions can be stabilized at zero field and room temperature in a fully compensated SAF. Using X-ray microscopy techniques, we are able to observe the skyrmions in the different SAF layers and demonstrate their antiparallel alignment. The results are substantiated by micromagnetic simulations and analytical models using experimental parameters, which confirm the chiral SAF skyrmion spin texture and allow the identification of the physical mechanisms that control the SAF skyrmion size and stability. We also demonstrate the local nucleation of SAF skyrmions via local current injection as well as ultrafast laser excitations at zero field. These results will enable the utilization of SAF skyrmions in skyrmion-based devices.

Ferromagnetic resonance modes in a single rectangular Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ microstrip were directly imaged using time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy combined with a phase-locked ferromagnetic resonance excitation scheme and the findings were corroborated by micromagnetic simulations. Although under uniform excitation in a single confined microstructure typically standing spin waves are expected, all imaged spin waves showed a nonstanding character both, at and off resonance, the latter being additionally detected with microantenna-based ferromagnetic resonance. Magnonics is a field of science that addresses the physical properties of spin waves and utilizes them for data processing. Scalability down to atomic dimensions, operations in the GHz-to-THz frequency range, utilization of nonlinear and nonreciprocal phenomena, and compatibility with CMOS are just a few of many advantages offered by magnons. Although magnonics is still primarily positioned in the academic domain, the scientific and technological challenges of the field are being extensively investigated, and many proof-of-concept prototypes have already been realized in laboratories. This roadmap is a product of the collective work of many authors that covers versatile spin-wave computing approaches, conceptual building blocks, and underlying physical phenomena. In particular, the roadmap discusses the computation operations with Boolean digital data, unconventional approaches like neuromorphic computing, and the progress towards magnon-based quantum computing. The article is organized as a collection of sub-sections grouped into seven large thematic sections. Analytic and numerical studies on curved magnetic nano-objects predict numerous exciting effects that can be referred to as magneto-chiral effects, which do not originate from intrinsic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction or interface-induced anisotropies. In constrast, these chiral effects stem from isotropic exchange or dipole-dipole interaction, present in all magnetic materials, which acquire asymmetric contributions in case of curved geometry of the specimen. As a result, for example, the spin-wave dispersion in round magnetic nanotubes becomes asymmetric, namely spin waves of the same frequency propagating in opposite directions along the nanotube exhibit different wavelenghts. Here, using time-resolved scanning transmission X-ray microscopy experiments, standard micromagntic simulations and a dynamic-matrix approach, we show that the spin-wave spectrum undergoes additional drastic changes when transitioning from a continuous to a discrete rotational symmetry, i.e. from round to hexagonal nanotubes, which are much easier to fabricate. The polygonal shape introduces localization of the modes both to the sharp, highly curved corners and flat edges. Moreover, due to the discrete rotational symmetry, the degenerate nature of the modes with azimuthal wave vectors known from round tubes is partly lifted, resulting in singlet and duplet modes. For comparison with our experiments, we calculate the microwave absorption from the numerically obtained mode profiles which shows that a dedicated antenna design is paramount for magnonic applications in 3D nano-structures. To our knowledge these are the first experiments directly showing real space spin-wave propagation in 3D nano objects.

The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, Germany, provides unique possibilities for a new generation of hadron-, nuclear- and atomic physics experiments. The future antiProton ANnihilations at DArmstadt (PANDA or $\overline{\rm P}$ANDA) experiment at FAIR will offer a broad physics programme, covering different aspects of the strong interaction. Understanding the latter in the non-perturbative regime remains one of the greatest challenges in contemporary physics. The antiproton-nucleon interaction studied with PANDA provides crucial tests in this area. Furthermore, the high-intensity, low-energy domain of PANDA allows for searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, e.g. through high precision symmetry tests. This paper takes into account a staged approach for the detector setup and for the delivered luminosity from the accelerator. The available detector setup at the time of the delivery of the first antiproton beams in the HESR storage ring is referred to as the \textit{Phase One} setup. A feasibility study has been performed in order to investigate the performance of the HADES detector to measure the electromagnetic decays of the hyperon resonances $\Sigma(1385)^0$, $\Lambda(1405)$ and $\Lambda{\Lambda}(1520)$ as well as the production of double strange baryon systems $\Xi^-$ and $\Lambda\Lambda$ in p+p reactions at a beam kinetic energy of 4.5 GeV. The existing HADES detector will be upgraded by a new Forward Detector, which extends the detector acceptance into a range of polar angles that plays a crucial role for these investigations. The analysis of each channel is preceded by a consideration of the production cross-sections. Theoretical and numerical studies on curved magnetic nano-objects predict numerous exciting effects that can be referred to as magneto-chiral effects, which do not originate from the intrinsic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction or surface-induced anisotropies. The origin of these chiral effects is the isotropic exchange or the dipole-dipole interaction present in all magnetic materials but renormalized by the curvature. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that curvature induced effects originating from the dipole-dipole interaction are directly observable by measuring spin-wave propagation in magnetic nanotubes with hexagonal cross section using time resolved scanning transmission X-ray microscopy. We show that the dispersion relation is asymmetric upon reversal of the wave vector when the propagation direction is perpendicular to the static magnetization. Therefore counter-propagating spin waves of the same frequency exhibit different wavelenghts. Hexagonal nanotubes have a complex dispersion, resulting from spin-wave modes localised to the flat facets or to the extremely curved regions between the facets. The dispersion relations obtained experimentally and from micromagnetic simulations are in good agreement. %The asymmetric spin-wave transport is present for all modes, promoting hexagonal nanotubes for magnonic applications. These results show that spin-wave transport is possible in 3D, and that the dipole-dipole induced magneto-chiral effects are significant.

The ability to tune the competition between the in-plane and out-of-plane orientation of magnetization provides a means to construct thermal sensors with a sharp spin re-orientation transition at specific temperatures. We have observed such a tuneable, temperature driven spin re-orientation in structurally amorphous, ferrimagnetic rare earth-transition metal (RE-TM) alloy thin films using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) and magnetic measurements. The nature of the spin re-orientation transition in FeGd can be fully explained by a non-equilibrium, nanoscale modulation of the chemical composition of the films. This modulation leads to a magnetic domain pattern of nanoscale speckles superimposed on a background of in-plane domains that form Laudau configurations in micron-scale patterned elements. It is this speckle magnetic structure that gives rise to a sharp two step-reversal mechanism that is temperature dependent. The possibility to balance competing anisotropies through the temperature opens opportunities to create and manipulate topological spin textures.

This work presents an architecture that generates curiosity-driven goal-directed exploration behaviours for an image sensor of a microfarming robot. A combination of deep neural networks for offline unsupervised learning of low-dimensional features from images, and of online learning of shallow neural networks representing the inverse and forward kinematics of the system have been used. The artificial curiosity system assigns interest values to a set of pre-defined goals, and drives the exploration towards those that are expected to maximise the learning progress. We propose the integration of an episodic memory in intrinsic motivation systems to face catastrophic forgetting issues, typically experienced when performing online updates of artificial neural networks. PANDA (anti-Proton ANnihiliation at DArmstadt) is planned to be one of the four main experiments at the future international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. It is going to address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using cooled antiproton beams with a high intensity and and momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c. PANDA is designed to reach a maximum luminosity of 2x10^32 cm^2 s. Most of the physics programs require an excellent particle identification (PID). The PID of hadronic states at the forward endcap of the target spectrometer will be done by a fast and compact Cherenkov detector that uses the detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) principle. It is designed to cover the polar angle range from 5{\deg} to 22{\deg} and to provide a separation power for the separation of charged pions and kaons up to 3 standard deviations (s.d.) for particle momenta up to 4 GeV/c in order to cover the important particle phase space. This document describes the technical design and the expected performance of the novel PANDA Disc DIRC detector that has not been used in any other high energy physics experiment (HEP) before. The performance has been studied with Monte-Carlo simulations and various beam tests at DESY and CERN. Magnetic skyrmions are particle-like chiral spin textures found in a magnetic film with out-of-planeanisotropy and are considered to be potential candidates as information carriers in next generationdata storage devices. Despite intense research into the nature of skyrmions and their dynamic prop-erties, there are several key challenges that still need to be addressed. In particular, the outstandingissues are the reproducible generation, stabilization and confinement of skyrmions at room tempera-ture. Here, we present a method for the capture of nanometer sized magnetic skyrmions in an arrayof magnetic topological defects in the form of an antidot lattice. With micromagnetic simulations,we elucidate the skyrmion formation in the antidot lattice and show that the capture is dependenton the antidot lattice parameters. This behavior is confirmed with scanning transmission x-ray mi-croscopy measurements. This demonstration that a magnetic antidot lattice can be implemented asa host to capture skyrmions provides a new platform for experimental investigations of skyrmionsand skyrmion based devices.

High-power lasers have numerous scientific and industrial applications. Some key areas include laser cutting and welding in manufacturing, directed energy in fusion reactors or defense applications, laser surgery in medicine, and advanced photolithography in the semiconductor industry. These applications require optical components, in particular mirrors, that withstand high optical powers for directing light from the laser to the target. Ordinarily, mirrors are comprised of multilayer coatings of different refractive index and thickness. At high powers, imperfections in these layers lead to absorption of light, resulting in thermal stress and permanent damage to the mirror. Here we design, simulate, fabricate, and demonstrate monolithic and highly reflective dielectric mirrors which operate under high laser powers without damage. The mirrors are realized by etching nanostructures into the surface of single-crystal diamond, a material with exceptional optical and thermal properties. We measure reflectivities of greater than 98% and demonstrate damage-free operation using 10 kW of continuous-wave laser light at 1070 nm, with intensities up to 4.6 MW/cm2. In contrast, at these laser powers, we observe damage to a standard dielectric mirror based on optical coatings. Our results initiate a new category of broadband optics that operate in extreme conditions.

Spin waves are excitations in ferromagnetic media that have been proposed as information carriers in hybrid spintronic devices with much lower operation power than conventional charge-based electronics. Their wave nature can be exploited in majority gates by using interference for computation. However, a scalable spin-wave majority gate that can be co-integrated alongside conventional electronics is still lacking. Here, we demonstrate a sub-micron inline spin-wave majority gate with fan-out. Time-resolved imaging of the magnetization dynamics by scanning transmission x-ray microscopy illustrates the device operation. All-electrical spin-wave spectroscopy further demonstrates majority gates with sub-micron dimensions, reconfigurable input and output ports, and frequency-division multiplexing. Using a time-resolved detection scheme in scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) we measured element resolved ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) at microwave frequencies up to 10\,GHz and a spatial resolution down to 20\,nm at two different synchrotrons. We present different methods to separate the contribution of the background from the dynamic magnetic contrast based on the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) effect. The relative phase between the GHz microwave excitation and the X-ray pulses generated by the synchrotron, as well as the opening angle of the precession at FMR can be quantified. A detailed analysis for homogeneous and inhomogeneous magnetic excitations demonstrates that the dynamic contrast indeed behaves as the usual XMCD effect. The dynamic magnetic contrast in time-resolved STXM has the potential be a powerful tool to study the linear and non-linear magnetic excitations in magnetic micro- and nano-structures with unique spatial-temporal resolution in combination with element selectivity., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Optimizing storage assignment is a central problem in warehousing. Past literature has shown the superiority of the Duration-of-Stay (DoS) method in assigning pallets, but the methodology requires perfect prior knowledge of DoS for each pallet, which is unknown and uncertain under realistic conditions. The dynamic nature of a warehouse further complicates the validity of synthetic data testing that is often conducted for algorithms. In this paper, in collaboration with a large cold storage company, we release the first publicly available set of warehousing records to facilitate research into this central problem. We introduce a new framework for storage assignment that accounts for uncertainty in warehouses. Then, by utilizing a combination of convolutional and recurrent neural network models, ParallelNet, we show that it is able to predict future shipments well: it achieves up to 29% decrease in MAPE compared to CNN-LSTM on unseen future shipments, and suffers less performance decay over time. The framework is then integrated into a first-of-its-kind Storage Assignment system, which is being piloted in warehouses across the country, with initial results showing up to 19% in labor savings., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures. Time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (TR-STXM) has been used for the direct imaging of spin wave dynamics in thin film yttrium iron garnet (YIG) with spatial resolution in the sub 100 nm range. Application of this x-ray transmission technique to single crystalline garnet films was achieved by extracting a lamella (13x5x0.185 $\mathrm{\mu m^3}$) of liquid phase epitaxy grown YIG thin film out of a gadolinium gallium garnet substrate. Spin waves in the sample were measured along the Damon-Eshbach and backward volume directions of propagation at gigahertz frequencies and with wavelengths in a range between 100~nm and 10~$\mathrm{\mu}$m. The results were compared to theoretical models. Here, the widely used approximate dispersion equation for dipole-exchange spin waves proved to be insufficient for describing the observed Damon-Eshbach type modes. For achieving an accurate description, we made use of the full analytical theory taking mode-hybridization effects into account.

Magnetic skyrmions are topological solitons that exhibit an increased stability against annihilation, and can be displaced with low current densities, making them a promising candidate as an information carrier. In order to demonstrate a viable skyrmion-based memory device, it is necessary to reliably and reproducibly nucleate, displace, detect, and delete the magnetic skyrmions. While the skyrmion displacement and detection have both been investigated in detail, much less attention has been dedicated to the study of the sub-ns dynamics of the skyrmion nucleation process. Only limited studies on the statics and above-ns dynamics have been performed, leaving still many open questions on the dynamics of the nucleation process. Furthermore, the vast majority of the presently existing studies focus on the nucleation from random natural pinning sites, or from patterned constrictions in the magnetic material itself, which limit the functionality of the skyrmion-based device. Those limitations can be overcome by the fabrication of a dedicated injector device on top of the magnetic material. In this study, we investigate the nucleation of magnetic skyrmions from a dedicated nano-engineered injector, demonstrating the reliable magnetic skyrmion nucleation at the remnant state. The sub-ns dynamics of the skyrmion nucleation process were also investigated, allowing us to shine light on the physical processes driving the nucleation.

Integrated optically-inspired wave-based processing is envisioned to outperform digital architectures in specific tasks, such as image processing and speech recognition. In this view, spin-waves represent a promising route due to their nanoscale wavelength in the GHz frequency range and rich phenomenology. Here, we realize a versatile optically-inspired platform using spin-waves, demonstrating the wavefront engineering, focusing, and robust interference of spin-waves with nanoscale wavelength. In particular, we use magnonic nanoantennas based on tailored spin-textures for launching spatially shaped coherent wavefronts, diffraction-limited spin-wave beams, and generating robust multi-beam interference patterns, which spatially extend for several times the spin-wave wavelength. Furthermore, we show that intriguing features, such as resilience to back-reflection, naturally arise from the spin-wave nonreciprocity in synthetic antiferromagnets, preserving the high quality of the interference patterns from spurious counterpropagating modes. This work represents a fundamental step towards the realization of nanoscale optically-inspired devices based on spin-waves.

We report on the time-resolved investigation of current- and field-induced domain wall motion in perpendicularly magnetized microwires exhibiting asymmetric exchange interaction by means of scanning transmission x-ray microscopy using a time step of 200 ps. Dynamical domain wall velocities on the order of 50-100 m s$^{-1}$ were observed. The improvement in the temporal resolution allowed us to observe the absence of incubation times for the motion of the domain wall, together with indications for a negligible inertia. Furthermore, we observed that, for short current and magnetic field pulses, the magnetic domain walls do not exhibit a tilting during its motion, providing a mechanism for the fast, tilt-free, motion of magnetic domain walls.

We demonstrated that thick Permalloy films exhibiting a weak growth-induced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy can be employed as an ideal test system for the investigation of gyration dynamics in topologically trivial and non-trivial magnetic states ranging from an isolated magnetic skyrmion to more complex n$\pi$ spin configurations.

Spin waves offer intriguing novel perspectives for computing and signal processing, since their damping can be lower than the Ohmic losses in conventional CMOS circuits. For controlling the spatial extent and propagation of spin waves on the actual chip, magnetic domain walls show considerable potential as magnonic waveguides. However, low-loss guidance of spin waves with nanoscale wavelengths, in particular around angled tracks, remains to be shown. Here we experimentally demonstrate that such advanced control of propagating spin waves can be obtained using natural features of magnetic order in an interlayer exchange-coupled, anisotropic ferromagnetic bilayer. Using Scanning Transmission X-Ray Microscopy, we image generation of spin waves and their propagation across distances exceeding multiple times the wavelength, in extended planar geometries as well as along one-dimensional domain walls, which can be straight and curved. The observed range of wavelengths is between 1 {\mu}m and 150 nm, at corresponding excitation frequencies from 250 MHz to 3 GHz. Our results show routes towards practical implementation of magnonic waveguides employing domain walls in future spin wave logic and computational circuits.

V-shaped nanoantennas are among the popular choices for the unit element of a metasurface, a nanostructured surface used for its ability to mold and control the wavefront of light. In general, the motivation for choosing the V-antenna as the unit element comes from its bimodal nature, where the introduction of the second mode offers extra control over the scattered wavefronts. Here, through near-field scanning optical microscopy, we study a 1D metastructure comprised of V-antennas in the context of generating asymmetric surface plasmon polariton (SPP) wavefronts. The key point is that the use of the V-antenna allows for the creation of a two-dimensional phase gradient with a single line of antennas, where the extra phase dimension offers additional control and allows for asymmetric features. Two different asymmetries are created: (1) SPP wavefronts that have different propagation directions on either side of the metastructure, and (2) SPP wavefront asymmetry through focusing: one side of the metastructure focuses SPP wavefronts, while the other side has diverging SPP wavefronts.

We consider the dynamical super-resolution problem consisting in the recovery of positions and velocities of moving particles from low-frequency static measurements taken over multiple time steps. The standard approach to this issue is a two-step process: first, at each time step some static reconstruction method is applied to locate the positions of the particles with super-resolution and, second, some tracking technique is applied to obtain the velocities. In this paper we propose a fully dynamical method based on a phase-space lifting of the positions and the velocities of the particles, which are simultaneously reconstructed with super-resolution. We provide a rigorous mathematical analysis of the recovery problem, both for the noiseless case and in presence of noise (in the discrete setting). Several numerical simulations illustrate and validate our method, which shows some advantage over existing techniques. We then discuss the application of this approach to the dynamical super-resolution problem in ultrafast ultrasound imaging: blood vessels' locations and blood flow velocities are recovered with super-resolution., Comment: 31 pages, 14 figures
