1. Cooling rates and intensity limitations for laser-cooled ions at relativistic energies

Abstract

The ability of laser cooling for relativistic ion beams is investigated. For this purpose, the excitation of relativistic ions with a continuous wave and a pulsed laser is analyzed, utilizing the optical Bloch equations. The laser cooling force is derived in detail and its scaling with the relativistic factor $\gamma$ is discussed. The cooling processes with a continuous wave and a pulsed laser system are investigated. Optimized cooling scenarios and times are obtained in order to determine the required properties of the laser and the ion beam for the planed experiments. The impact of beam intensity effects, like intrabeam scattering and space charge are analyzed. Predictions from simplified models are compared to particle-in-cell simulations and are found to be in good agreement. Finally two realistic example cases of Carbon ions in the ESR and relativistic Titanium ions in SIS100 are compared in order to discuss prospects for future laser cooling experiments.

Abstract

New results on laser cooling of stored, bunched, relativistic ion beams are presented. For the first time it has been possible to cool an ion beam with large momentum spread without initial electron cooling or scanning of the bunching frequency by using a single cw laser system.

Abstract

This work presents a direct measurement of the $^{96}$Ru($p, \gamma$)$^{97}$Rh cross section via a novel technique using a storage ring, which opens opportunities for reaction measurements on unstable nuclei. A proof-of-principle experiment was performed at the storage ring ESR at GSI in Darmstadt, where circulating $^{96}$Ru ions interacted repeatedly with a hydrogen target. The $^{96}$Ru($p, \gamma$)$^{97}$Rh cross section between 9 and 11 MeV has been determined using two independent normalization methods. As key ingredients in Hauser-Feshbach calculations, the $\gamma$-ray strength function as well as the level density model can be pinned down with the measured ($p, \gamma$) cross section. Furthermore, the proton optical potential can be optimized after the uncertainties from the $\gamma$-ray strength function and the level density have been removed. As a result, a constrained $^{96}$Ru($p, \gamma$)$^{97}$Rh reaction rate over a wide temperature range is recommended for $p$-process network calculations., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figs, Accepted for publication at PRC

Abstract

We performed a laser spectroscopic determination of the $2s$ hyperfine splitting (HFS) of Li-like $^{209}\text{Bi}^{80+}$ and repeated the measurement of the $1s$ HFS of H-like $^{209}\text{Bi}^{82+}$. Both ion species were subsequently stored in the Experimental Storage Ring at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum f\"ur Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt and cooled with an electron cooler at a velocity of $\approx 0.71\,c$. Pulsed laser excitation of the $M1$ hyperfine-transition was performed in anticollinear and collinear geometry for $\text{Bi}^{82+}$ and $\text{Bi}^{80+}$, respectively, and observed by fluorescence detection. We obtain $\Delta E^{(1s)}= 5086.3(11)\,\textrm{meV}$ for $\text{Bi}^{82+}$, different from the literature value, and $\Delta E^{(2s)}= 797.50(18)\,\textrm{meV}$ for $\text{Bi}^{80+}$. These values provide experimental evidence that a specific difference between the two splitting energies can be used to test QED calculations in the strongest static magnetic fields available in the laboratory independent of nuclear structure effects. The experimental result is in excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction and confirms the sum of the Dirac term and the relativistic interelectronic-interaction correction at a level of 0.5% confirming the importance of accounting for the Breit interaction., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We present the first clear identification and highly accurate measurement of the intra-shell transition $1s2p\, ^3P_2 \to 1s2s\, ^3S_1$ of He-like uranium performed via X-ray spectroscopy. The present experiment has been conducted at the gas-jet target of the ESR storage ring in GSI (Darmstadt, Germany) where a Bragg spectrometer, with a bent germanium crystal, and a Ge(i) detector were mounted. Using the ESR deceleration capabilities, we performed a differential measurement between the $1s2p\, ^3P_2 \to 1s2s\, ^3S_1$ He-like U transition energy, at 4510 eV, and the $1s^22p\ ^2P_{3/2} \to 1s^22s\, ^2S_{1/2}$ Li-like U transition energy, at 4460 eV. By a proper choice of the ion velocities, the X-ray energies from the He- and Li-like ions could be measured, in the laboratory frame, at the same photon energy. This allowed for a drastic reduction of the experimental systematic uncertainties, principally due to the Doppler effect, and for a comparison with the theory without the uncertainties arising from one-photon QED predictions and nuclear size corrections.

Abstract

We present the first observation of the 1s2p 3P2 ? 1s2s 3S1 transition in He-like uranium. The experiment was performed at the internal gas-jet target of the ESR storage ring at GSI exploiting a Bragg crystal spectrometer and a germanium solid state detector. Using the 1s2 2p 2P3/2 ? 1s2 2s 2S1/2 transition in Li-like uranium as reference and the deceleration capabilities of the ESR storage rings, we obtained the first evaluation of the He-like heavy ion intra-shell transition energy.

Abstract

We present new (preliminary) results from a recent (May 2021) beam experiment for laser cooling of bunched relativistic carbon ion beams at the ESR of the GSI Helmholtz Centre in Darmstadt, Germany. We were able to use the new pulsed UV laser system from the TU Darmstadt, which has a very high repetition rate, a variable pulse duration and high UV power (up to 250 mW @ 257 nm). Using this laser, we have - for the first time - demonstrated laser cooling of bunched relativistic ion beams for different laser pulse durations (166-740 ps) at a ~10 MHz repetition rate. In addition, we could use the moveable in-vacuo (X)UV detection system from Münster University to study the fluorescence from the laser-excited ions. Finally, we have observed clear effects in the amount of detected fluorescence from the ions using our new ion bunch - laser pulse timing scheme. Abstract

New concepts and technologies are developed to advance the performance of heavy ion synchrotrons. Besides fast ramping of superconducting magnets, extreme UHV technologies to stabilize dynamic vacuum and charge related loss, broad band MA cavities, space charge compensation by means of electron lenses and new cooling technologies, e.g. laser cooling, show great promise to advance the forefront of beam parameters. Several of these technologies and concepts are developed and tested at GSI/FAIR. Abstract

In this paper, we present an experimental and theoretical study of excitation processes for the heaviest stable helium-like ion, that is, He-like uranium occurring in relativistic collisions with hydrogen and argon targets. In particular, we concentrate on angular distributions of the characteristic K alpha radiation following the K -> L excitation of He-like uranium. We pay special attention to the magnetic sub-level population of the excited 1s2l(j) states, which is directly related to the angular distribution of the characteristic K alpha radiation. We show that the experimental data can be well described by calculations taking into account the excitation by the target nucleus as well as by the target electrons. Moreover, we demonstrate for the first time an important influence of the electron-impact excitation process on the angular distributions of the K alpha radiation produced by excitation of He-like uranium in collisions with different targets.

Abstract

The radiative electron capture (REC) into the K shell of bare Xe ions colliding with a hydrogen gas target has been investigated. In this study, the degree of linear polarization of the K-REC radiation was measured and compared with rigorous relativistic calculations as well as with the previous results recorded for U92+. Owing to the improved detector technology, a significant gain in precision of the present polarization measurement is achieved compared to the previously published results. The obtained data confirms that for medium-Z ions such as Xe, the REC process is a source of highly polarized x rays which can easily be tuned with respect to the degree of linear polarization and the photon energy. We argue, in particular, that for relatively low energies the photons emitted under large angles are almost fully linear polarized.

Abstract

An experiment addressing electron capture (EC) decay of hydrogen-like 142Pm60+ions has been conducted at the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI. The decay appears to be purely exponential and no modulations were observed. Decay times for about 9000 individual EC decays have been measured by applying the single-ion decay spectroscopy method. Both visually and automatically analysed data can be described by a single exponential decay with decay constants of 0.0126(7)s−1 for automatic analysis and 0.0141(7)s−1 for manual analysis. If a modulation superimposed on the exponential decay curve is assumed, the best fit gives a modulation amplitude of merely 0.019(15), which is compatible with zero and by 4.9 standard deviations smaller than in the original observation which had an amplitude of 0.23(4).

Abstract

Accurate spectroscopy of highly-charged high-Z ions in a storage ring is demonstrated to be feasible by the use of specially adapted crystal optics. The method has been applied for the measurement of the 1s Lamb shift in hydrogen-like gold (Au+78) in a storage ring through spectroscopy of the Lyman x-rays. This measurement represents the first result obtained for a high-Z element using high-resolution wavelength-dispersive spectroscopy in the hard x-ray regime, paving the way for sensitivity to higher- order QED effects.

Abstract

Laser cooling and precision laser spectroscopy experiments of relativistic highly charged ions are being prepared at the heavy‐ion experimental cooler storage ring (CSRe). Optical detection of fluorescence photons, emitted from the laser‐excited ions, is extremely important for both powerful methods. In this paper, we briefly report on the current status of the existing optical detectors and also on their performance during laser cooling of relativistic Li‐like 16O5+ ion beams at the CSRe. In addition, we introduce the designs for our new optical detection systems, which have much higher photon detection efficiencies and can cover a much broader wavelength range. These detector systems will be used for the upcoming laser spectroscopy experiment of Li‐like 16O5+ ions, as well as for future laser spectroscopy experiments with other highly charged ions. Abstract

Within the FAIR project, laser cooling of highly intense, ultra relativistic ion beams will be attempted for the first time, and in a large (circumference 1084 m) and strong (max. magnetic rigidity 100 Tm) synchrotron, called "SIS100". Laser cooling of such ion beams should result in a further increase of the longitudinal phase space density and in non-Gaussian longitudinal beam profiles. For stable operation of such ion beams, and for optimization of the cooling process, both the laser force and the high-intensity effects have to be studied numerically in advance. The efficiency of laser cooling has been analyzed for different synchrotron frequency regimes. At high beam intensities, intra-beam scattering and space-charge effects have been found to counteract the laser cooling force. Abstract

This work presents a direct measurement of the Ru-96(p,gamma)Rh-97 cross section via a novel technique using a storage ring, which opens opportunities for reaction measurements on unstable nuclei. A proof-of-principle experiment was performed at the storage ring ESR at GSI in Darmstadt, where circulating Ru-96 ions interacted repeatedly with a hydrogen target. The Ru-96(p,gamma)Rh-97 cross section between 9 and 11 MeV has been determined using two independent normalization methods. As key ingredients in Hauser-Feshbach calculations, the gamma-ray strength function as well as the level density model can be pinned down with the measured (p,gamma) cross section. Furthermore, the proton optical potential can be optimized after the uncertainties from the gamma-ray strength function and the level density have been removed. As a result, a constrained Ru-96(p,gamma)Rh-97 reaction rate over a wide temperature range is recommended for p-process network calculations.

Abstract

In the past the principle of Doppler laser cooling was investigated and verified in storage rings in the low energy regime. Within the FAIR project the laser cooling will be applied to high intensity and high energy beams for the first time. The laser cooling results in a further increase of the longitudinal phase space density and in non-Gaussian longitudinal beam profiles. In order to ensure stable operation and optimize the cooling process the interplay of the laser force and high intensity effects has to be studied numerically. This contribution will identify constrains of the cooling scheme for an efficient reduction of momentum spread. For high beam energies the scattering of photons has to be treated stochastically instead of using averaged forces. Abstract

8th International Conference on Nuclear Physics at Storage Rings Stori11, October 9-14, 2011 Laboratori Nazionale di Frascati, Italy. Storage rings offer the possibility of measuring proton- and alpha-induced reactions in inverse kinematics. The combination of this approachwith a radioactive beamfacility allows, in principle, the determination of the respective cross sections for radioactive isotopes. Such data are highly desired for a better understanding of astrophysical nucleosynthesis processes like the p-process. A pioneering experiment has been performed at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI using a stable 96Ru beam at 9-11 AMeV and a hydrogen target. Monte-Carlo simulations of the experiment were made using the Geant4 code. In these simulations, the experimental setup is described in detail and all reaction channels can be investigated. Based on the Geant4 simulations, a prediction of the shape of different spectral components can be performed. A comparison of simulated predictions with the experimental results shows a good agreement and allows the extraction of the cross section.

Physics letters / B B 797, 134800 (2019). doi:10.1016/j.physletb.2019.134800, An experiment addressing electron capture (EC) decay of hydrogen-like ions has been conducted at the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI. The decay appears to be purely exponential and no modulations were observed. Decay times for about 9000 individual EC decays have been measured by applying the single-ion decay spectroscopy method. Both visually and automatically analysed data can be described by a single exponential decay with decay constants of for automatic analysis and for manual analysis. If a modulation superimposed on the exponential decay curve is assumed, the best fit gives a modulation amplitude of merely 0.019(15), which is compatible with zero and by 4.9 standard deviations smaller than in the original observation which had an amplitude of 0.23(4)., Published by North-Holland Publ., Amsterdam

Physical review / A covering atomic, molecular, and optical physics and quantum information 99(5), 052702 (2019). doi:10.1103/PhysRevA.99.052702, The radiative electron capture (REC) into the K shell of bare Xe ions colliding with a hydrogen gas target has been investigated. In this study, the degree of linear polarization of the K-REC radiation was measured and compared with rigorous relativistic calculations as well as with the previous results recorded for U92+. Owing to the improved detector technology, a significant gain in precision of the present polarization measurement is achieved compared to the previously published results. The obtained data confirms that for medium-Z ions such as Xe, the REC process is a source of highly polarized x rays which can easily be tuned with respect to the degree of linear polarization and the photon energy. Abstract

We have studied the K-shell excitation of He-like uranium (U90+) in relativistic collisions with hydrogen and argon atoms. Performing measurements with different targets, as well as with different collision energies, enabled us to explore the proton- (nucleus-) impact excitation as well as the electron-impact excitation process for the heaviest He-like ion. The large fine-structure splitting in uranium allowed us to partially resolve excitation into different L-shell levels. State-of-the-art relativistic calculations which include excitation mechanisms due to the interaction with both protons (nucleus) and electrons are in good agreement with the experimental findings. Moreover, our experimental data clearly demonstrate the importance of including the generalized Breit interaction in the treatment of the electron-impact excitation process., Physical Review A, 99 (3), ISSN:1094-1622, ISSN:0556-2791, ISSN:1050-2947
