This qualitative study examined the supervision of new professionals from the perspectives of new professionals and their supervisors. Analysis of interviews with four new professionals and their supervisors suggested the following: (a) supervisors supervised the way they wanted to be supervised, (b) new professionals had difficulty identifying and/or articulating what they wanted or needed from their supervisors, (c) seasoned supervisors appeared to be better diagnosticians of new professionals' needs than novice supervisors, (d) some supervisors lacked the skills necessary to diagnose accurately the supervision needs of new professionals, and (e) there appeared to be little direct connection between identified supervision needs of new professionals and professional development activities. "Depth interviews" reveal the development of autonomy to be a complex process characterized by a network of interrelated life experiences in multiple domains. Relational, personal, and educational events influence the pace and direction of developing autonomy. Six themes emerging from the data are discussed and related to developmental theories and research. (EMK)

Describes the development of the Georgia Autonomy Scales, an instrument used by student affairs professionals to assess the level of autonomy development of students. Estimates of the instrument's reliability and validity were judged sufficiently high to permit use with groups of students. (MKA)

Weisbord's model of organizational diagnosis, researchers developed the Student Organization Environment Scales to measure students' perceptions of the psychosocial environment or climate of college student organizations. Investigates student attitudes toward activities that would strengthen their apparent developmental "weaknesses" or areas of less extensive development. Students (N=200) completed measures of psychosocial development and intended program participation. Results show that students preferred programs and services related to developmental domains in which they were already proficient. (RJM)

Examined the effects of systematic peer helper training on perceived stress of resident assistants (N=52) who received either concurrent or prior training. Results indicated that training received before beginning work seemed to lessen stress while concurrent training was of marginal value. No sex differences were reported. (JAC)

Surveyed 168 college students to examine how work and participation in student organizations contribute to student's personal development. Results showed students who participated in organizations were more developed in terms of educational, career, and lifestyle plans than other students. (BH)

Examined interpersonal values of fraternity pledges and members, and independents, using the Survey of Interpersonal Values. Students who joined a fraternity came to value independence less and to value leadership more than did nonmembers and, as a group, attained more homogeneous values regarding benevolence and independence. Examined rates of cognitive and psychosocial development and the influences of salient life experiences of traditional-aged college students. Results from 15 college students over one academic year suggest that intellectual and psychosocial developmental processes are not uniform, occur at discrepant rates, and are significantly affected by life events. Surveyed college student affairs divisions (N=118) to assess magnitude of student paraprofessional use and similarities and differences among programs in regard to rationale for paraprofessional use, types of paraprofessional work activities, recruitment and selection, training, compensation, hours worked, and supervision. Found that more than 72 percent of responding institutions had at least one student paraprofessional program. (Author/NB)

There were no significant differences in academic abilities among sampled fraternities. Differences in the social environments were found when the high and low achieving fraternity groups were compared. Independence, academic achievement, and intellectuality, as measured by the University Residence Environment Scale, differentiated the environments. (Author)

Describes the Student Developmental Task Inventory (SDTI-2) which assesses the level of student development in terms of autonomy, purpose, and intimate relationships. The development, reliability, and validity of the SDTI-2 are discussed; student uses are suggested. (RC)

Investigated similarities and differences in developmental task achievement between college students in the United States and Puerto Rico. Freshmen and senior students in Puerto Rico and the United States were administered the Student Developmental Task Inventory. Results suggested that developmental growth patterns are transcultural. Surveyed graduate housing assistants (N=147) to determine what factors affected their choice and perceived job satisfaction. Results showed most assistants were unmarried master's degree students who chose a housing assistantship for personal satisfaction and learning experiences. Most found the experience satisfying. Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common gastrointestinal emergency affecting premature infants. A better understanding of the clinical signs and symptoms associated with the disease may result in an improved ability to more effectively intervene in patient care. One of the clinical signs that have not been fully explored is the stooling pattern of preterm infants. This retrospective case-control study included 258 premature infants born prior to 29 weeks of gestation: 129 infants with NEC and 129 gestational age–matched controls. Data were collected from the medical record for the first 28 postnatal days. The relationships between the stooling pattern of premature infants and NEC were assessed via nonparametric techniques and linear mixed models. We identified few differences in the stooling pattern among infants with NEC and their unaffected counterparts. During the first week following birth, infants with NEC passed stool more frequently than controls. However, we found that these infants were taking nothing by mouth for fewer days in the first week following birth compared with controls. We also found that infants who developed NEC were fed smaller proportions of breast milk than healthy controls. Aberrant gut motility has been associated with prematurity and inflammatory bowel disease. However, our analyses did not identify any major differences in the stooling pattern among NEC case patients and controls. While further analyses may be needed, clinical suspicion for NEC should not be overwhelmingly influenced by the stooling pattern observed during the early neonatal period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article sets to provide a more nuanced understanding of congenital heart disease (CHD) since the evidence of it having a multifactorial basis is indirect. The factors that modify rather than cause CHD substantially affect risk in predisposed individuals. Their characterization in a mouse model offers the potential to narrow the search space in human studies and develop alternative strategies for prevention.

Abstract: Chemoprofile of Taverniera cuneifolia (Roth) Arn. a wild relative of commercial licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra L) is presented. Both T. cuneifolia and G. glabra L were found to be very similar phytochemically. At least eighteen chromatophores were found similar in both the plants including the sweetening principle, glycyrrhizin. The extracts of T. cuneifolia root, exhibited promising anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti germ tube formation (in Candida albicans), protection from mutagen toxicity and cytotoxic activities comparable to that of G. glabra. In general, the results suggest that T. cuneifolia could be used as substitute of G. glabra. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Finds Caple's self-organization paradigm useful in its examination of mechanisms by which change in college students can be examined and ultimately predicted and influenced. Doubts the value of Caple's using analogies from physics, or argument by analogy in forming the theory. Advocates research to support the theory. Considers development more cumulative, progressive, and predictable than Caple would suggest. (KS)
