Abstract

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the $K^{\pm} \rightarrow \pi^{0} \pi^{0} \mu^{\pm} \nu$ decay based on a sample of 2437 candidates with 15% background contamination collected in 2003--2004. The decay branching ratio in the kinematic region of the squared dilepton mass above $0.03$~GeV$^2/c^4$ is measured to be $(0.65 \pm 0.03) \times 10^{-6}$. The extrapolation to the full kinematic space, using a specific model, is found to be $(3.45 \pm 0.16) \times 10^{-6}$, in agreement with chiral perturbation theory predictions., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We present a mathematically well founded approach for the synthetic modeling of turbulent flows using generative adversarial networks (GAN). Based on the analysis of chaotic, deterministic systems in terms of ergodicity, we outline a mathematical proof that GAN can actually learn to sample state snapshots form the invariant measure of the chaotic system. Based on this analysis, we study a hierarchy of chaotic systems starting with the Lorenz attractor and then carry on to the modeling of turbulent flows with GAN. As training data, we use fields of velocity fluctuations obtained from large eddy simulations (LES). Two architectures are investigated in detail: we use a deep, convolutional GAN (DCGAN) to synthesise the turbulent flow around a cylinder. We furthermore simulate the flow around a low pressure turbine stator using the pix2pixHD architecture for a conditional DCGAN being conditioned on the position of a rotating wake in front of the stator. The settings of adversarial training and the effects of using specific GAN architectures are explained. We thereby show that GAN are efficient in simulating turbulence in technically challenging flow problems on the basis of a moderate amount of training data. GAN training and inference times significantly fall short when compared with classical numerical methods, in particular LES, while still providing turbulent flows in high resolution. We furthermore analyse the statistical properties of the synthesized and LES flow fields, which agree excellently. We also show the ability of the conditional GAN to generalize over changes of geometry by generating turbulent flow fields for positions of the wake that are not included in the training data.

Abstract

$K^{+}\rightarrow\pi^{+}\nu\overline{\nu}$ is one of the theoretically cleanest meson decay where to look for indirect effects of new physics complementary to LHC searches. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is designed to measure the branching ratio of this decay with 10\% precision. NA62 took data in pilot runs in 2014 and 2015 reaching the final designed beam intensity. Abstract

The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the Ke4 modes: Ke4(+-) ($K^\pm \to \pi^+ \pi^- e^\pm \nu$) and Ke4(00) ($K^\pm \to \pi^0 \pi^0 e^\pm \nu$) with nearly one percent background contamination. The detailed study of form factors and branching rates, based on these data, has been completed recently. The results brings new inputs to low energy strong interactions description and tests of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) and lattice QCD calculations. In particular, new data support the ChPT prediction for a cusp in the $\pi^0\pi^0$ invariant mass spectrum at the two charged pions threshold for Ke4(00) decay. New final results from an analysis of about 400 $K^\pm \to \pi^\pm \gamma \gamma$ rare decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN during low intensity runs with minimum bias trigger configurations are presented. 8. An Active Sensing Paradigm for Studying Human Auditory Perception

Abstract

Our perception is based on active sensing, i.e., the relationship between self-motion and resulting changes to sensory inputs. Yet, traditional experimental paradigms are characterized by delayed reactions to a predetermined stimulus sequence. To increase the engagement of subjects and potentially provide richer behavioral responses, we developed Sensory Island Task for humans (SITh), a freely-moving search paradigm to study auditory perception. In SITh, subjects navigate an arena in search of an auditory target, relying solely on changes in the presented stimulus frequency, which is controlled by closed-loop position tracking. A “target frequency” was played when subjects entered a circular sub-area of the arena, the “island”, while different frequencies were presented outside the island. Island locations were randomized across trials, making stimulus frequency the only informative cue for task completion. Two versions of SITh were studied: binary discrimination, and gradual change of the stimulus frequency. The latter version allowed determining frequency discrimination thresholds based on the subjects’ report of the perceived island location (i.e., target frequency). Surprisingly, subjects exhibited similar thresholds as reported in traditional “stationary” forced-choice experiments after performing only 30 trials, highlighting the intuitive nature of SITh. Notably, subjects spontaneously employed a small variety of stereotypical search patterns, and their usage proportions varied between task versions. Moreover, frequency discrimination performance depended on the search pattern used. Overall, we demonstrate that the use of an ecologically driven paradigm is able to reproduce established findings while simultaneously providing rich behavioral data for the description of sensory ethology.

Abstract

The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated and analysed unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the $K_{e4}$ modes: $K_{e4}(+-)$ ($K^\pm \to \pi^+ \pi^- e^\pm \nu$) and $K_{e4}(00)$ ($K^\pm \to \pi^0 \pi^0 e^\pm \nu$) with nearly one percent background contamination. It leads to the improved measurement of branching fractions and detailed form factor studies. New final results from the analysis of 381 $K^\pm \to \pi^\pm \gamma \gamma$ rare decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN are presented. Abstract

From the 2002 data taking with a neutral kaon beam extracted from the CERN-SPS, the NA48/1 experiment observed 97 $\Xi^{0}\rightarrow \Sigma^{+} \mu^{-} \bar{\nu}_{\mu}$ candidates with a background contamination of $30.8 \pm 4.2$ events. From this sample, the BR($\Xi^{0}\rightarrow \Sigma^{+} \mu^{-} \bar{\nu}_{\mu}$) is measured to be $(2.17 \pm 0.32_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm 0.17_{\mathrm{syst}})\times10^{-6}$.

Abstract

As first observed by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS, the $\p0p0$ invariant mass (M00) distribution from $\kcnn$ decay shows a cusp-like anomaly at M00=2m+, where m+ is the charged pion mass. An analysis to extract the pi pi scattering lengths in the isospin I=0 and I=2 states, a0 and a2, respectively, has been recently reported. In the present work the Dalitz plot of this decay is fitted to a new empirical parameterization suitable for practical purposes, such as Monte Carlo simulations of K+- -> pi+- pi0 pi0 decays., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures.

Abstract

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the K±→π±π0e+e− decay from an exposure of 1.7×1011 charged kaon decays recorded in 2003–2004. A sample of 4919 candidates with 4.9% background contamination allows the determination of the branching ratio in the full kinematic region, BR(K±→π±π0e+e−)=(4.24±0.14)×10−6. The study of the kinematic space shows evidence for a structure dependent contribution in agreement with predictions based on chiral perturbation theory. Several P- and CP-violating asymmetries are also evaluated.

Abstract

The $f^+$ form factors of the $B\to \pi$, $D\to \pi$ and $D\to K$ transitions are calculated from QCD light-cone sum rules (LCSR) and used to predict the widths and differential distributions of the exclusive semileptonic decays $B\to \pi \bar{l}\nu_l$, $D \to\pi \bar{l}\nu_l$ and $D \to K \bar{l}\nu_l$, where $l=e,\mu$. The current theoretical uncertainties are estimated. The LCSR results are found to agree with the results of lattice QCD calculations and with experimental data on exclusive semileptonic D decays. Abstract

Abstract A measurement of the form factors of charged kaon semileptonic decays is presented, based on 4.4 × 106 K ± → π 0 e ± ν e (K e3 ± ) and 2.3 × 106 K ± → π 0 μ±ν μ (K μ3 ± ) decays collected in 2004 by the NA48/2 experiment. The results are obtained with improved precision as compared to earlier measurements. The combination of measurements in the K e3 ± and K μ3 ± modes is also presented.

Abstract

QCD sum rules on the light-cone are derived for the sum $f^+ + f^-$ of the $B\to \pi$ and $D\to \pi$ form factors taking into account contributions up to twist four. Combining the results with the corresponding $f^+$ form factors calculated previously by the same method, we obtain the scalar form factors $f^0$. Our sum rule predictions are compared with lattice results, current-algebra constraints, and quark-model calculations. Furthermore, we calculate decay distributions and the integrated width for the semileptonic decay $B \to \pi \bar{\tau}\nu_\tau$ which is sensitive to $f^0$. Abstract

The direct CP violation parameter Re(ε′/ε) has been measured from the decay rates of neutral kaons into two pions using the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. With 3.3 million KL → π0π0 events collected during the 1998 and 1999 running periods, a result of Re(ε′/ε) = (15.0 ± 2.7) × 10-4 has been obtained. The result combined with the published 1997 sample is Re(ε′/ε) = (15.3 ± 2.6) × 10-4.

Abstract

A sample of 1.69×107 fully reconstructed π0→γe+e− decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 experiment at CERN in 2003–2004 is analyzed to search for the dark photon (A′) production in the π0→γA′ decay followed by the prompt A′→e+e− decay. No signal is observed, and an exclusion region in the plane of the dark photon mass mA′ and mixing parameter ε2 is established. The obtained upper limits on ε2 are more stringent than the previous limits in the mass range 9 MeV/c2

23. Mesh Refinement and Inlet Turbulence Intensity in the Numerical Evaluation of Cooling Effectiveness: A Systematic Study on an Industrial Gas Turbine

Abstract

In this study, the influence of grid resolution and inflow turbulence on the prediction of gas temperature distribution around HP-turbine blades and the effectiveness of cooling flows are assessed by means of a comparative, systematic study with increasing grid resolution, starting from a typical RANS-mesh with progressive refinement, by means of scale-resolving simulations. The investigation is focused on a three-stage industrial gas turbine in the mid-range output class, whereby we restrict our analysis to the first stage, where most of the external cooling flow is injected, this regions being characterized by the highest temperature fluctuations. The extent of these variations and their unsteady characteristics need to be determined to verify if they have a measurable influence on the material temperature. As the interaction of turbulence with cooling flows is a key element in the prediction of cooling effectiveness, turbulence levels play a major role in addition to the grid resolution. Therefore, special attention is paid to the accurate description of turbulence scaling laws and correlations at the turbine inflow. The results of the investigation provide insight in a viable modelling and simulation tool which can be adopted during design cycles and reveals valuable details of the unsteady aerothermal stresses on the HP turbine blades.

24. Unsteady Rotor-Stator Interaction in a Four-Stage Axial Turbine: An Experimental Investigation

Abstract

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the transient rotor-stator interactions (RSI) in a four-stage axial flow turbine at design as well as off-design conditions. The pressure fluctuations recorded on the surface of a stator vane in stage 3 of the machine are phase-averaged to the rotor position and decomposed into the main contributing periodic components. The origins of the different fluctuations are identified by matching their frequency to the individual blade counts of the different blade rows which, in turn, allows to get insight into their interaction mechanisms and their inter-blade-row propagation mechanisms. Dependent on the operating point, the magnitude, and local distribution of the pressure fluctuation, components change significantly and components originating from different upstream and downstream blade rows become dominant. For operating points close to the design point both directly neighboring blade rows R2 and R3 are the main contributors to the RSI affecting the pressure fluctuations on stator vane 3 at mid span. For the intermediate off-design operating conditions the effect of the downstream blade row R3 diminishes and instead the blade row R1 further upstream beyond the directly neighboring R2 reaches magnitudes similar to that of R2. For strong off-design conditions the influence of the downstream blade row R3 diminishes further and instead of pressure fluctuations corresponding to the blade passing frequency of the immediate upstream blade row R2, a pressure fluctuation corresponding to the difference in blade counts of both upstream blade rows becomes the dominant component.

Besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei auf einer präzisen Definition der Problemstellung, einer exakten Ableitung der resultierenden Randbedingungen & Einstellungen und der effizienten Auswertung der resultierenden Daten. Hierdurch können umfassende Einblicke in fundamentale strömungsphysikalische Zusammenhänge gewonnen werden konnten, welche auf Basis der zusätzlich vorgestellten experimentellen Datenbasis nicht ermittelt werden konnten., This work presents a treatise on the efficient use of highly accurate Large Eddy Simulation (LES) techniques for the precise determination of the boundary layer condition in highly loaded low-pressure turbine stages under periodic wake influence. Special attention is paid to a precise definition of the problem, an exact derivation of the resulting boundary conditions & settings and the efficient evaluation of the resulting data. Through this, comprehensive insights into fundamental flow-physical relationships can be gained, which could not be determined on the basis of the additionally presented experimental data base.

Abstract

The influence of turbulence modeling approach by means of (U)RANS and large eddy simulation (LES) on the overall modeling of turbulent condensing wet steam flows is investigated using the example of a low-pressure steam turbine cascade. For an accurate numerical treatment of turbulence in the presence of shock waves, necessary for predictive scale-resolving computations, a hybrid flux treatment switches between a baseline nondissipative central flux in energy consistent split form and a shock-capturing upwind flux in shocked regions based on a shock sensor. Condensation is realized by a monodispersed Euler–Euler source term model, the equation of state by the highly efficient and accurate spline based table lookup method (SBTL). The numerical treatment is validated with a decay of homogeneous isotropic turbulence test case containing eddy shocklets. The measurement results of the condensing wet steam cascade are overall much better matched by LES compared to RANS and URANS. Analysis shows that the LES is much better able to account for the inherently unsteady nature of the spontaneous condensation process and its interaction with the trailing edge shock wave structure.

Abstract

With the growing importance of regenerative power generation and especially of a hydrogen-based economy, the full potential of gas turbines of the smaller output class (< 10 MW) can be ideally exploited to provide peak coverage of the energy need whilst stabilising the electric grids in the mid- and low-voltage range. Such machines can be typically started in a relatively short time (similarly to aero engines) and are capable, at the same time, of delivering dispatchable power-on-demand. A safe, stable and profitable operation under highly unsteady conditions poses renewed challenges for an optimal thermal management (especially in the HP stages) as well as control and surveillance of the machines. The understanding and hence predictability of the propagation of the temperature inhomogeneities originating at the combustor outlet remains hence a primary objective of current research, as persistent distortion patterns could be adopted at the turbine exhaust as diagnostic indications of a malfunction of the combustor, for example. In the present study low-frequency disturbances introduced by a periodic load variation have been simulated and superimposed to the inhomogeneous, unsteady flow entering a 3-stage, high-pressure industrial gas turbine fed by a can-type combustion chamber comprising 6 silo-burners. The effects of the unsteadiness realized at the combustor exit have been investigated by means of Detached Eddy Simulations, whereby a density-based solution approach with detailed thermodynamics has been employed. The periodic disturbances at the turbine inlet have been obtained by means of an artificially generated, unsteady field, resulting from a two-dimensional snapshot of the flow field at the combustor exit. Also, a combustor failure has been mimicked by reducing (respectively increasing) the mean temperature in some of the turbine inlet regions corresponding to the outlet of two burners. The propagation and amplitude changes of temperature fluctuations have been analyzed in the frequency domain. Tracking of the temperature fluctuations’ maxima at the lowest frequencies revealed characteristic migration patterns indicating that the corresponding fluctuations persist with a non-negligible amplitude up to the last rows. A distinct footprint could also be observed at the same locations when a combustor failure was simulated, showing that, in principle, the early detection of combustor failures is indeed possible.

Abstract

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the K-+/- -> pi(+/-)pi(0)e(+)e(-) decay from an exposure of 1.7 x 10(11) charged kaon decays recorded in 2003-2004. A sample of 4919 candidates with 4.9% background contamination allows the determination of the branching ratio in the full kinematic region, BR(K-+/- -> pi(+/-)pi(0)e(+)e(-)) = (4.24 +/- 0.14) x 10(-6). The study of the kinematic space shows evidence for a structure dependent contribution in agreement with predictions based on chiral perturbation theory. Several P- and CP-violating asymmetries are also evaluated., We gratefully acknowledge the CERN SPS accelerator and beam line staff for the excellent performance of the beam and the technical staff of the participating institutes for their efforts in the maintenance and operation of the detector, and data processing. We thank M. Koval for making the “Prague” radiative Dalitz decay code available in the NA48/2 simulation software. Discussions with G. D'Ambrosio and O. Catà were most stimulating in clarifying the impact of interference terms on our measurement.

The most precise measurement of the charged kaon semi-leptonic form factors obtained by NA48/2 with 4.4 million Ke3 and 2.3 million Km3 events collected in 2004 will also be presented.

Abstract

We present a mathematically well-founded approach for the synthetic modeling of turbulent flows using generative adversarial networks (GAN). Based on the analysis of chaotic, deterministic systems in terms of ergodicity, we outline a mathematical proof that GAN can actually learn to sample state snapshots from the invariant measure of the chaotic system. Based on this analysis, we study a hierarchy of chaotic systems starting with the Lorenz attractor and then carry on to the modeling of turbulent flows with GAN. As training data, we use fields of velocity fluctuations obtained from large-eddy simulations (LES). Two architectures are investigated in detail: we use a deep, convolutional GAN (DCGAN) to synthesize the turbulent flow around a cylinder. We furthermore simulate the flow around a low-pressure turbine stator using the pix2pixHD architecture for a conditional DCGAN being conditioned on the position of a rotating wake in front of the stator. The settings of adversarial training and the effects of using specific GAN architectures are explained. We thereby show that GAN are efficient in simulating turbulence in technically challenging flow problems on the basis of a moderate amount of training data. GAN training and inference times significantly fall short when compared with classical numerical methods, in particular, LES, while still providing turbulent flows in high resolution. We furthermore analyze the statistical properties of the synthesized and LES flow fields, which agree excellently. We also show the ability of the conditional GAN to generalize over changes of geometry by generating turbulent flow fields for positions of the wake that are not included in the training data.

Abstract

Among the meson decays, K→πνν‾ are the cleanest environment, from the theoretical point of view, where to search for new physics effects. The NA62 Experiment at CERN SPS aims to measure the BR(K+→π+νν‾) with a 10% precision by the end of 2018. It has been commissioned with technical runs in 2014 and 2015, and some preliminary results of the detector performances and quality of data are here reported.

Abstract

In the proposed paper the transient interaction between periodic incoming wakes and the laminar separation bubble located on the rear suction surface of a typical, highly loaded LPT blade is investigated by means of highly resolved large-eddy simulations. An annular, large scale, 1.5-stage LPT test-rig, equipped with a modified T106 turbine blading and an upstream rotating vortex generator is considered and the numerical predictions are compared against hot film array measurements. In order to accurately assess both baseline transition and wake impact, simulations were conducted with unperturbed and periodically perturbed inflow conditions. Main mechanisms of transition and wake-boundary layer interaction are investigated utilizing a frequency-time domain analysis. Finally visualizations of the main flow structures and shear layer instabilities are provided utilizing the q-criterion as well as the finite-time Lyapunov exponent.
