We present observations of the double-peaked broad H$\alpha$ profile emitted by the active nucleus of NGC 7213 using the the Gemini South Telescope in 13 epochs between 2011 September 27 and 2013 July 23. This is the first time that the double-peaked line profile of this nucleus -- typical of gas emission from the outer parts of an accretion disk surrounding a supermassive black hole (SMBH) -- is reported to vary. From the analysis of the line profiles we find two variability timescales: (1) the shortest one, between 7 and 28 days, is consistent with the light travel time between the ionizing source and the part of the disk emitting the line; and (2) a longer one of $\gtrsim 3$ months corresponding to variations in the relative intensity of the blue and red sides of the profile, which can be identified with the dynamical timescale of this outer part of the the accretion disk. We modeled the line profiles as due to emission from a region between $\approx$ 300 and 3000 gravitational radii of a relativistic, Keplerian accretion disk surrounding the SMBH. Superposed on the disk emissivity, the model includes an asymmetric feature in the shape of a spiral arm with a rotation period of $\approx$ 21 months, which reproduces the variations in the relative intensity of the blue and red sides of the profile. Besides these variations, the $rms$ variation profile reveals the presence of another variable component in the broad line, with smaller velocity width W$_{68}$ (the width of the profile corresponding to 68$\%$ of the flux) of $\sim 2100$ km s$^{-1}$., Comment: 12 pages, 4 tables, 10 figures

We present an observational study of the impacts of the interactions on the stellar population in a sample of galaxy pairs. Long-slit spectra in the wavelength range 3440-7300 {\AA} obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) at Gemini South for fifteen galaxies in nine close pairs were used. The spatial distributions of the stellar population contributions were obtained using the stellar population synthesis code STARLIGHT. Taking into account the different contributions to the emitted light, we found that most of the galaxies in our sample are dominated by the young/intermediate stellar populations. This result differs from the one derived for isolated galaxies where the old stellar population dominates the disc surface brightness. We interpreted such different behavior as being due to the effect of gas inflows along the disk of interacting galaxies on the star formation in a time scale of the order of about 2Gyr. We also found that, in general, the secondary galaxy of the pairs has a higher contribution of the young stellar population than the primary one. We compared the estimated values of the stellar and nebular extinctions derived from the synthesis method and the H{\alpha}/H\b{eta} emission-line ratio finding that the nebular extinctions are systematically higher than stellar ones by about a factor of 2. We did not find any correlation between nebular and stellar metallicities. We neither found a correlation between stellar metallicities and ages while a positive correlation between nebular metallicities and stellar ages was obtained, with the older regions being the most metal-rich., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present Gemini/GNIRS spectroscopy of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4388, with simultaneous coverage from 0.85 - 2.5 $\mu$m. Several spatially-extended emission lines are detected for the first time, both in the obscured and unobscured portion of the optical narrow line region (NLR), allowing us to assess the combined effects of the central continuum source, outflowing gas and shocks generated by the radio jet on the central 280 pc gas. The HI and [FeII] lines allow us to map the extinction affecting the NLR. We found that the nuclear region is heavily obscured, with E(B-V) ~1.9 mag. To the NE of the nucleus and up to ~150 pc, the extinction remains large, ~1 mag or larger, consistent with the system of dust lanes seen in optical imaging. We derived position-velocity diagrams for the most prominent lines as well as for the stellar component. Only the molecular gas and the stellar component display a well-organized pattern consistent with disk rotation. Other emission lines are kinematically perturbed or show little evidence of rotation. Extended high-ionization emission of sulfur, silicon and calcium is observed to distances of at least 200 pc both NE and SW of the nucleus. We compared flux ratios between these lines with photoionization models and conclude that radiation from the central source alone cannot explain the observed high-ionization spectrum. Shocks between the radio-jet and the ambient gas are very likely an additional source of excitation. We present spectra of the nuclear regions of 50 nearby (D = 1 - 92 Mpc, median = 20 Mpc) galaxies of morphological types E to Sm. The spectra, obtained with the Gemini Near-IR Spectrograph on the Gemini North telescope, cover a wavelength range of approximately 0.85-2.5 microns at R~1300--1800. There is evidence that most of the galaxies host an active galactic nucleus (AGN), but the range of AGN luminosities (log (L2-10 keV [erg/s]) = 37.0-43.2) in the sample means that the spectra display a wide variety of features. Some nuclei, especially the Seyferts, exhibit a rich emission-line spectrum. Other objects, in particular the type 2 Low Ionisation Nuclear Emission Region galaxies, show just a few, weak emission lines, allowing a detailed view of the underlying stellar population. These spectra display numerous absorption features sensitive to the stellar initial mass function, as well as molecular bands arising in cool stars, and many other atomic absorption lines. We compare the spectra of subsets of galaxies known to be characterised by intermediate-age and old stellar populations, and find clear differences in their absorption lines and continuum shapes. We also examine the effect of atmospheric water vapor on the signal-to-noise ratio achieved in regions between the conventional NIR atmospheric windows, of potential interest to those planning observations of redshifted emission lines or other features affected by telluric H2O. In this paper we derived oxygen abundance gradients from HII regions located in eleven galaxies in eight systems of close pairs. Long-slit spectra in the range 4400-7300A were obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spec- trograph at Gemini South (GMOS). Spatial profiles of oxygen abundance in the gaseous phase along galaxy disks were obtained using calibrations based on strong emission-lines (N2 and O3N2). We found oxygen gradients signifi- cantly flatter for all the studied galaxies than those in typical isolated spiral galaxies. Four objects in our sample, AM1219A, AM1256B, AM 2030A and AM2030B, show a clear break in the oxygen abundance at galactocentric radius R/R25 between 0.2 and 0.5. For AM1219A and AM1256B we found negative slopes for the inner gradients, and for AM2030B we found a positive one. In all these three cases they show a flatter behaviour to the outskirts of the galaxies. For AM2030A, we found a positive-slope outer gradient while the inner one is almost compatible with a flat behaviour. A decrease of star forma- tion efficiency in the zone that corresponds to the oxygen abundance gradient break for AM1219A and AM2030B was found. For the former, a minimum in the estimated metallicities was found very close to the break zone that could be associated with a corotation radius. On the other hand, AM1256B and AM2030A, present a SFR maximum but not an extreme oxygen abundance value. All the four interacting systems that show oxygen gradient breakes the extreme SFR values are located very close to break zones. We present an observational study about the impacts of the interactions in the electron density of \ion{H}{ii} regions located in 7 systems of interacting galaxies. The data consist of long-slit spectra in the range 4400-7300 A, obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph at Gemini South (GMOS). The electron density was determined using the ratio of emission lines [SII]6716/6731. Our results indicate that the electron density estimates obtained of HII regions from our sample of interacting galaxies are systematically higher than those derived for isolated galaxies. The mean electron density values of interacting galaxies are in the range of $N_{\rm e}=24-532$\,$ \rm cm^{-3}$, while those obtained for isolated galaxies are in the range of $N_{\rm e}=40-137\: \rm cm^{-3}$. Comparing the observed emission lines with predictions of photoionization models, we verified that almost all the \ion{H}{ii} regions of the galaxies AM\,1054A, AM\,2058B, and AM\,2306B, have emission lines excited by shock gas. For the remaining galaxies, only few HII regions has emission lines excited by shocks, such as in AM\,2322B (1 point), and AM\,2322A (4 points). No correlation is obtained between the presence of shocks and electron densities. Indeed, the highest electron density values found in our sample do not belong to the objects with gas shock excitation. The photometric properties of main sequence (MS) and pre-main sequence (PMS) stars in the young cluster Haffner 16 are examined using images recorded with the Gemini South Adaptive Optics Imager (GSAOI) and corrected for atmospheric blurring by the Gemini Multi-Conjugate Adapative Optics System (GeMS). A rich population of PMS stars is identified, and comparisons with isochrones suggest an age < 10 Myr assuming a distance modulus of 13.5 (D = 5 kpc). When compared with the solar neighborhood, Haffner 16 is roughly a factor of two deficient in objects with sub-solar masses. PMS objects in the cluster are also more uniformly distributed on the sky than bright MS stars. It is suggested that Haffner 16 is dynamically evolved, and that it is shedding protostars with sub-solar masses. Young low mass clusters like Haffner 16 are one possible source of PMS stars in the field. The cluster will probably evolve on time scales of ~ 100 - 1000 Myr into a diffuse moving group with a mass function that is very different from that which prevailed early in its life., Comment: To appear in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific

We present ten medium-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio near-infrared (NIR) spectra of SN 2011fe from SpeX on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) and Gemini Near-Infrared Spectrograph (GNIRS) on Gemini North, obtained as part of the Carnegie Supernova Project. This data set constitutes the earliest time-series NIR spectroscopy of a Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), with the first spectrum obtained at 2.58 days past the explosion and covering -14.6 to +17.3 days relative to B-band maximum. C I {\lambda}1.0693 {\mu}m is detected in SN 2011fe with increasing strength up to maximum light. The delay in the onset of the NIR C I line demonstrates its potential to be an effective tracer of unprocessed material. For the first time in a SN Ia, the early rapid decline of the Mg II {\lambda}1.0927 {\mu}m velocity was observed, and the subsequent velocity is remarkably constant. The Mg II velocity during this constant phase locates the inner edge of carbon burning and probes the conditions under which the transition from deflagration to detonation occurs. We show that the Mg II velocity does not correlate with the optical light-curve decline rate {\Delta}m15. The prominent break at ~1.5 {\mu}m is the main source of concern for NIR k-correction calculations. We demonstrate here that the feature has a uniform time evolution among SNe Ia, with the flux ratio across the break strongly correlated with {\Delta}m15. The predictability of the strength and the onset of this feature suggests that the associated k-correction uncertainties can be minimized with improved spectral templates., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present mid infrared (Mid-IR) spectra of the Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC\,3281, obtained with the Thermal-Region Camera Spectrograph (T-ReCS) at the Gemini South telescope. The spectra present a very deep silicate absorption at 9.7\,$\mu$m, and [S{\sc\,iv]}\,10.5\,$\mu$m and [Ne{\sc\,ii]}\,12.7\,$\mu$m ionic lines, but no evidence of PAH emission. We find that the nuclear optical extinction is in the range 24 $\leq$ A$_{V}$ $\leq$ 83\,mag. A temperature T = 300\,K was found for the black-body dust continuum component of the unresolved 65\,pc nucleus and at 130\,pc SE, while the region at 130\,pc reveals a colder temperature (200\,K). We describe the nuclear spectrum of NGC\,3281 using a clumpy torus model that suggests that the nucleus of this galaxy hosts a dusty toroidal structure. According to this model, the ratio between the inner and outer radius of the torus in NGC\,3281 is $R_0/R_d$ = 20, with {\bf 14} clouds in the equatorial radius with optical depth of $\tau_{V}$ = 40\,mag. We would be looking in the direction of the torus equatorial radius ($i$ = {\bf 60$^{\circ}$}), which has outer radius of R$_{0}\,\sim$ 11\,pc. The column density is N$_{H}\approx$\,{\bf 1.2}\,$\times\,10^{24}\,cm^{-2}$ and iron K$\alpha$ equivalent width ($\approx$ 0.5 - 1.2\,keV) are used to check the torus geometry. Our findings indicate that the X-ray absorbing column density, which classifies NGC\,3281 as a Compton-thick source, may also be responsible for the absorption at 9.7\,$\mu$m providing strong evidence that the silicate dust responsible for this absorption can be located in the AGN torus., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

We present an observational study about the impacts of the interactions in the kinematics, stellar populations, and oxygen abundances of the components of the galaxy pair AM\,2322-821. A fairly symmetric rotation curve for the companion (AM\,2322B) galaxy with a deprojected velocity amplitude of 110 km s$^{-1}$ was obtained, and a dynamical mass of $ 1.1 - 1.3 \times 10^{10} M_{\sun}$ within a radius of 4 kpc was estimated using this deprojected velocity. Asymmetries in the radial velocity field were detected for the companion, very likely due the interaction between the galaxies. The interaction between the main and companion galaxies was modelled using numerical N-body/hydrodynamical simulations, with the result indicating that the current stage of the system would be about 90 Myr after perigalacticum. The spatial variation in the distribution of the stellar-population components in both galaxies was analysed using the stellar population synthesis code {\sc STARLIGHT}. The companion galaxy is dominated by a very young (t $ \leq 1\times10^{8}$ yr) population, with the fraction of this population to the total flux at $\lambda\, 5\,870\, \AA$, increasing outwards in the galaxy disc. On the other hand, the stellar population of AM\,2322A is heterogeneous along the slit positions observed. Spatial profiles of oxygen abundance in the gaseous phase were obtained using the diagnostic diagram R23 vs. [OIII]/[OII], where we compared the observed values with the ones obtained from photoionization models. Such gradients of oxygen abundance are significantly flatter for this pair of galaxies than in typical isolated spiral galaxies. This metallicity distribution is interpreted as the gradients having been destroyed by interaction-induced gas flows from the outer parts to the centre of the galaxy, Comment: accepted by MNRAS

High-resolution infrared spectra (R=50,000) have been obtained for twelve red-giant members of the LMC with the Gemini South 8.3-meter telescope plus Phoenix spectrometer. Quantitative chemical abundances of carbon-12, carbon-13, nitrogen-14, and oxygen-16 were derived from molecular lines of CO, CN, and OH, while sodium, scandium, titanium, and iron abundances were derived from neutral atomic lines. The LMC giants have masses from about 1 to 4 solar masses and span a metallicity range from [Fe/H]= -1.1 to -0.3. The program red giants all show evidence of first dredge-up mixing, with low 12C/13C ratios, and low 12C correlated with high 14N abundances. Comparisons of the oxygen-to-iron ratios in the LMC and the Galaxy indicate that the trend of [O/Fe] versus [Fe/H] in the LMC falls about 0.2 dex below the Galactic trend. Such an offset can be modeled as due to an overall lower rate of supernovae per unit mass in the LMC relative to the Galaxy, as well as a slightly lower ratio of supernovae of type II to supernovae of type Ia., Comment: 25 pages, 6 tables, 10 figures. We present results of near--IR long-slit spectroscopy in the J and K bands of the Seyfert 2 galaxies NGC 2110 and Circinus, investigating the gaseous distribution, excitation, reddening and kinematics. In NGC 2110, the emission line ratio [FeII]/Pa beta increases towards the nucleus (to ~ 7). The nuclear [Fe II]1.257 (microns) and Pa beta lines are broader (FWHM ~ 500 km/s) than the H2 (2.121) line (FWHM ~ 300 km/s). Both these results suggest that shocks, driven by the radio jet, are an important source of excitation of [Fe II]. The H2 excitation appears to be dominated by X-rays from the nucleus. In Circinus, both [FeII]/Pa beta and H2/Br gamma decrease from ~ 2 at 4 arcsec from the nucleus to nuclear values of ~ 0.6 and ~ 1, respectively, suggesting that the starburst dominates the nuclear excitation, while the AGN dominates the excitation further out (r > 2 arcsec). For both galaxies, the gaseous kinematics are consistent with circular rotation in the plane of the disk. Our rotation curves suggest that the nucleus (identified with the peak of the IR continuum) is displaced from the kinematic centre of the galaxies. This effect has been observed previously in NGC 2110 based on the kinematics of optical emission lines, but the displacement is smaller in the infrared, suggesting the effect is related to obscuration. The continuum J-K colours of the nuclear region indicate a red stellar population in NGC 2110 and a reddened young stellar population in Circinus. Right at the nucleus of both galaxies, the colours are redder, apparently a result of hot dust emission from the inner edge of a circumnuclear torus., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have obtained HST FOC long-slit optical spectroscopy of the Narrow Line Region of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3. In the region cospatial with the radio-jet the velocity field is highly perturbed and shows two velocity systems separated by as much as 1700 km/s. We interpret this to be the consequence of the rapid expansion of a cocoon of hot gas, shocked and heated by the radio-emitting outflow, which compresses and accelerates the ambient gas. The NLR itself is essentially a cylindrical shell expanding supersonically. From the size and velocity of the expanding region, we derive an upper limit to the radio-source age, ~< 1.5 E5 years, and a lower limit for the jet power, ~> 2 E42 erg/s required to inflate the cocoon and estimate that the jet minimum advance speed is 3 E-3 pc per year. The total kinetic energy of the high velocity NLR gas can be estimated as ~6 E54 erg, comparable to the total energy carried by the jet over its lifetime and this quantitatively supports the idea that the NLR gas is accelerated by the jet. If the advance speed of Mrk 3 is representative of the Seyfert population then these sources must also be short lived and probably recurrent. The jet kinetic luminosity of Mrk 3 is between 2 and 3 orders of magnitude smaller than that derived for radio-loud AGNs with similar emission-line luminosity. On the other hand, the fraction of jet power dissipated in radio-emission is similar. We speculate that the main distinction between radio-quiet and radio-loud AGN is ascribed to a difference in jet power rather than to a different efficiency in synchrotron emission production., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, Astrophysical Journal in press

To better understand the physical processes that produce the continuous emission in active galactic nuclei (AGN), a snapshot of the overall continuous energy distribution of NGC 3783, from gamma ray to radio wavelengths, has been obtained within the framework of the World Astronomy Days. The data collected in this campaign are from GRO, ROSAT, Voyager 2, IUE, HST, CTIO, SAAO, and the VLA. Great care has been taken in disentangling the genuine AGN continusous emission from other contributions; depending on the waveband, the latter might be (1) unrelated contaminating sources in cases where the instrument field of view is large (2) components within which the AGN is embedded, such as the stellar bulge population which accounts for a significant fraction of the optical continuum, and free-bound and FE2 blends wich contribute to the ultraviolet flux. After correction for these other contributins, the continuous emission of the isolated AGN appears to be rather flat (i.e., approximately equal energy per unit logarithmic frequency) from soft gamma ray to infrared wavelengths. At high energies (0.1 MeV to 0.1 keV), the AGN continuum can be fitted by a power law F nu approaches Nu(exp -a) with a spectral index of alpha approximately 1. At longer wavelengths, two excesses above this power law ('bumps') appear: in the ultraviolet, the classical big blue bump, which can be interpreted as thermal emission from the accretion disc surrounding a massive black hole, and in the infrared, a second bump which can be ascribed to thermal emission from dust in the vicinity of the AGN, heated by ultraviolet radiation from the central source. By fitting accretion-disk models to the observed AGN spectral energy distribution, we find values for the accretion disk innermost temperature, accretion rate, and black hole mass, with some differences that depend on whether or not we extrapolate the high energy power law up to infrared wavelengths. A fit to the IR bump above the extended alpha equals 1 power law suggests the presence of a dust component covering the region from a distance rho approximately equals 80 light days (hot grains at a temperature of approximately equals 1500 K) to rho approximately equals 60 light years (cool grains at T approximately equals 200 K). The total mass of dust is around 60 solar masses.

The Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783 was intensely monitored in several bands between 1991 December and 1992 August. This paper presents the results from the ground-based observations in the optical and near-IR bands, which complement the data set formed by the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectra, discussed elsewhere. Spectroscopic and photometric data from several observatories were combined in order to obtain well-sampled light curves of the continuum and of H(beta). During the campaign the source underwent significant variability. The light curves of the optical continuum and of H(beta) display strong similarities to those obtained with the IUE. The near-IR flux did not vary significantly except for a slight increase at the end of the campaign. The cross-correlation analysis shows that the variations of the optical continuum have a lag of 1 day or less with respect to those of the UV continuum, with an uncertainty of is less than or equal to 4 days. The integrated flux of H(beta) varies with a delay of about 8 days. These results confirm that (1) the continuum variations occur simultaneously or with a very small lag across the entire UV-optical range, as in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 5548; and (2) the emission lines of NGC 3783 respond to ionizing continuum variations with less delay than those of NGC 5548. As observed in NGC 5548, the lag of H(beta) with respect to the continuum is greater than those of the high-ionization lines.

The Weber-Davis model of the solar wind is generalized to include the effects of latitude. The principal assumptions of perfect electrical conductivity, rotational symmetry, a polytropic relation between pressure and density, and a flow aligned magnetic field in a system rotating with the Sun, are retained. The original three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic flow problem is reduced to a two dimensional hydrodynamic flow problem. The solution at 1 Au is most sensitive to a latitudinal dependence in the coronal boundary temperature and least sensitive to a latitudinal dependence in the magnetic field magnitude. A solution obtained for an approximate dipolar variation in the coronal magnetic field magnitude predicts that the latitudinal flow is initially toward the equator due to magnetic channeling; however, this effect is rapidly overcome and the latitudinal flow at 1 Au is toward the pole and not significantly different from the solution for constant boundary conditions.

Results are presented which were obtained with the Winge-Coleman model for theoretical predictions of latitudinal dependencies in the solar wind. A first-order expansion is described which allows analysis of first-order latitudinal variations in the coronal boundary conditions and results in a second-order partial differential equation for the perturbation stream function. Latitudinal dependencies are analytically separated out in the form of Legendre polynomials and their derivative, and are reduced to the solution of radial differential equations. This analysis is shown to supply an estimate of how large the coronal variation in latitude must be to produce an 11 km/sec/deg gradient in the radial velocity of the solar wind, assuming steady-state processes.

The motion of spacecraft following the earth's orbit occurs within the solar latitude range of 7 deg 15 min N on approximately September 7 to 7 deg 15 min S on approximately March 6. The latitude dependencies so far detected within this range have shown that the photospheric dipole-like field of the sun makes very important contributions to the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) observed near the ecliptic. Changes in geomagnetic activity from even to odd numbered 11-year solar cycles are related to changes in the sun's dipolar field. The north-south IMF component and meridional, nonradial flow are important to a complete understanding of steady-state solar wind dynamics. Coronal conditions must be latitude-dependent in a way that accounts for the observed latitude dependence of the velocity and density of the solar wind.

The northern polar region of the sun was studied during July 1973 by Munro and Jackson through use of the white-light coronagraph and the X-ray photographs produced by the Skylab mission. They described the northern polar hole as nearly axisymmetric and gave the geometry and density distribution under this approximation. The present work gives quasi-radial approximation to the full magnetohydrodynamic equations for axisymmetric, polytropic solar wind flow to simulate this polar hole, with the benefit that model temperature and magnetic field intensities and distributions in this particular polar hole can be deduced. It is concluded that from 2 out to 5 solar radii the temperature varies only slightly with radius, but is larger near the center of the polar hole than at the edge. It is also found that the magnetic field intensity at 2 solar radii could be about 1 gauss at the center of the hole, decreasing toward the edge of the hole. If this is extrapolated to the surface, a field as high as 20 gauss is suggested.

Field-aligned currents, which are known to play an important role in the dynamics of the earth's magnetosphere, would also be expected to flow in the Jovian magnetosphere during magnetically active periods. Such currents are difficult to observe largely because of their limited spatial extent and intermittent nature, but on the Pioneer 11 inbound pass to Jupiter on day 336, 1800 GRT, near the L shell of Ganymede, the helium vector magnetometer recorded a structured perturbation with the characteristic signature of a field-aligned current. No analogous structure was found on a similar Pioneer 10 inbound pass (day 337, 1200 GRT). The perturbation could have been caused by turbulence with the wake of Ganymede through which the spacecraft was moving or the perturbation could represent the first observation of a Jovian substorm. The observations are discussed in terms of both models, and difficulties are examined.

The Weber-Davis model of the solar wind is generalized to include the effects of latitude. The principal assumptions of high electrical conductivity, rotational symmetry, the polytropic relation between pressure and density, and a flow-alined field in a system rotating with the sun, are retained. An approximate solution to the resulting equations for spherical boundary conditions at the base of the corona indicates a small component of latitudinal flow toward the solar poles at large distances from the sun as result of latitudinal magnetic forces.
