1. Examining Empathy and Advocacy in K-12 Educational Leaders

Abstract

In this quantitative study, the relationship between levels of empathy and advocacy competencies among a sample of K-12 educational leaders are examined. The researchers determined higher levels of empathy to be a positive, statistically significant predictor of advocacy for students at the individual as well as community levels. Researchers discovered educators possessing high levels of empathy would be better able to advocate effectively. Professional implications as well as implications for training future school leaders are explored.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between academic entitlement, gaming, addiction, and life balance. College students (n = 230) on academic probation (cumulative GPA < 2.0) enrolled at a large, public southern university participated in the study. We were able to successfully predict entitlement using life balance subscales; specifically, global health and quality of relationship subscale scores predicted academic entitlement. We did not find a significant relationship between gaming addiction and life balance. Additionally, we found that the probation students in this sample lead fairly balanced lives in most domains, but struggle with stress and academic entitlement to some degree. 16. The Relationship between Witnessing Bullying, Defending Targets, and Internalizing Symptoms: An Analysis of Gender Differences among Sixth-Grade Students

Abstract

We examined the moderating effect of gender on witnessing bullying, defending, and internalizing symptoms among sixth-grade students at one middle school in the northwestern United States. Results indicated that for females, witnessing bullying was positively associated with depressive symptoms and social anxiety, whereas for males, defending was positively associated with depressive symptoms. Findings suggest the importance of equipping female students with strategies to cope with witnessing bullying and providing male students with appropriate intervention skills for defending targets.

Abstract

At many accredited institutions, college students must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA or higher to successfully matriculate at their academic institutions. Those who fall short of this threshold are placed on academic probation, which can lead to academic suspension and ultimately, attrition. The degree of 'grit' that students possess has often been explored in relation to academic achievement. However, few researchers have explored the relationship between grit and other factors that can influence college adjustment, such as students' parents' orientation towards work and students' personal views of life's meaningfulness. The current study was designed to determine whether students' grit scores could be predicted based on their parents' workaholism tendencies and the students' meaning in life scores. Abstract

We show here that computer game players can build high-quality crystal structures. Introduction of a new feature into the computer game Foldit allows players to build and real-space refine structures into electron density maps. To assess the usefulness of this feature, we held a crystallographic model-building competition between trained crystallographers, undergraduate students, Foldit players and automatic model-building algorithms. After removal of disordered residues, a team of Foldit players achieved the most accurate structure. Analysing the target protein of the competition, YPL067C, uncovered a new family of histidine triad proteins apparently involved in the prevention of amyloid toxicity. From this study, we conclude that crystallographers can utilize crowdsourcing to interpret electron density information and to produce structure solutions of the highest quality., Building crystal structures into the electron density is an important step in protein structure solution. Here, the authors recruit online game players, students, and experienced crystallographers to compete in a competition to solve a new structure, and find that crowdsourcing model-building works.

Abstract

Adult Attachment is a complex, rich theory describing human relationships and significantly affects various aspects of the counseling relationship. However, many counselors may not be aware of their attachment style, nor how this pattern of relating shapes their counseling practice. Critical incidents are events in which a counselor-in-training (CIT) experiences significant professional or personal growth as a result of a structured or random activity in their program of study. The purpose of this particular study was to explore how purposefully introducing adult attachment style to CITs affected their perception and interpretation of past relationship interactions in attachment terms and how the process of learning about attachment style affected personal and professional growth. The results revealed that creating awareness of adult attachment styles for CITs enhanced understanding of their personal and professional relationships and contributed to their personal and professional growth in a manner consistent with a critical incident.
