2. Demographic Bias: A Challenge for Fingervein Recognition Systems?

Abstract

Recently, concerns regarding potential biases in the underlying algorithms of many automated systems (including biometrics) have been raised. In this context, a biased algorithm produces statistically different outcomes for different groups of individuals based on certain (often protected by anti-discrimination legislation) attributes such as sex and age. While several preliminary studies investigating this matter for facial recognition algorithms do exist, said topic has not yet been addressed for vascular biometric characteristics. Accordingly, in this paper, several popular types of recognition algorithms are benchmarked to ascertain the matter for fingervein recognition. The experimental evaluation suggests lack of bias for the tested algorithms, although future works with larger datasets are needed to validate and confirm those preliminary results., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 8 tables. 23. Two models for linear comparative calibration

Abstract

We consider the comparative calibration problem in the case when linear relationship is assumed between two considered measuring devices with possibly different units and precisions. The first method for obtaining the approximate confidence region for unknown parameters of the calibration line applies the maximum likelihood estimators of the unknown parameters. The second method is based on estimation of the calibration line via replicated errors-in-variables model. Essential point in this approach is approximation of the small sample distribution of the Wald-type test statistic. This enables to construct the interval estimators for the multiple-use calibration case.

Abstract

Electro-quasistatic as well as electrostatic simulations of 3D high-voltage (HV) technical devices are presented using a symmetric coupled formulation of both the finite-element-method (FEM) and the boundary-element-method (BEM). This formulation allows for the specification of Dirichlet boundary conditions on the coupling interface. Accurate solutions can be achieved without the need of large spatial discretization domains. The use of the adaptive-cross-approximation (ACA) and a block Jacobi preconditioner for the linear system solver results in an efficient simulation scheme for numerical computations of electric field distributions of realistic 3D high-voltage devices. Abstract

Background: In Europe cardiovascular disease (CVD) is responsible for 3.9 million deaths (45% of deaths), being ischaemic heart disease, stroke, hypertension (leading to heart failure) the major cause of these CVD related deaths. Periodontitis is also a chronic non‐communicable disease (NCD) with a high prevalence, being severe periodontitis, affecting 11.2% of the world's population, the sixth most common human disease. Material and Methods: There is now a significant body of evidence to support independent associations between severe periodontitis and several NCDs, in particular CVD. In 2012 a joint workshop was held between the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and the American Academy of Periodontology to review the literature relating periodontitis and systemic diseases, including CVD. In the last five years important new scientific information has emerged providing important emerging evidence to support these associations. Results and Conclusions: The present review reports the proceedings of the workshop jointly organised by the EFP and the World Heart Federation (WHF), which has updated the existing epidemiological evidence for significant associations between periodontitis and CVD, the mechanistic links and the impact of periodontal therapy on cardiovascular and surrogate outcomes. This review has also focused on the potential risk and complications of periodontal therapy in patients on anti thrombotic therapy and has made recommendations for dentists, physicians and for patients visiting both the dental and medical practices. Abstract

A finite-element formulation based on a discrete electromagnetism is developed to simulate electro-quasistatic fields on unstructured meshes. The presented formulation takes dielectric effects into account as well as nonlinear conductive effects. The implementation is based on discrete differential forms on an unstructured 3-D mesh. Numerical results of the simulation of a three dimensional high-voltage surge arrester consisting of linear and nonlinear materials are shown. An algebraic multigrid method is introduced as a preconditioner to nonstandard projected preconditioned conjugate-gradient linear system solver.
