We present a scheme for tuning and controlling nano mechanical resonators by subjecting them to electrostatic gradient fields, provided by nearby tip electrodes. We show that this approach enables access to a novel regime of optomechanics, where the intrinsic nonlinearity of the nanoresonator can be explored. In this regime, one or several laser driven cavity modes coupled to the nanoresonator and suitably adjusted gradient fields allow to control the motional state of the nanoresonator at the single phonon level. Some applications of this platform have been presented previously [New J. Phys. 14, 023042 (2012), Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 120503 (2013)]. Here, we provide a detailed description of the corresponding setup and its optomechanical coupling mechanisms, together with an in-depth analysis of possible sources of damping or decoherence and a discussion of the readout of the nanoresonator state., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Graphene and carbon nanotubes represent the ultimate size limit of one and two-dimensional nanoelectromechanical resonators. Because of their reduced dimensionality, graphene and carbon nanotubes display unusual mechanical behavior; in particular, their dynamics is highly nonlinear. Here, we review several types of nonlinear behavior in resonators made from nanotubes and graphene. We first discuss an unprecedented scenario where damping is described by a nonlinear force. This scenario is supported by several experimental facts: (i) the quality factor varies with the amplitude of the motion as a power law whose exponent coincides with the value predicted by the nonlinear damping model, (ii) hysteretic behavior (of the motional amplitude as a function of driving frequency) is absent in some of our resonators even for large driving forces, as expected when nonlinear damping forces are large, and (iii) when we quantify the linear damping force (by performing parametric excitation measurements) we find that it is significantly smaller than the nonlinear damping force. We then review parametric excitation measurements, an alternative actuation method which is based on nonlinear dynamics. Finally, we discuss experiments where the mechanical motion is coupled to electron transport through a nanotube. The coupling can be made so strong that the associated force acting on the nanotube becomes highly nonlinear with displacement and velocity. Carbon nanotubes and graphene allow fabricating outstanding nanomechanical resonators. They hold promise for various scientific and technological applications, including sensing of mass, force, and charge, as well as the study of quantum phenomena at the mesoscopic scale. Here, we have discovered that the dynamics of nanotube and graphene resonators is in fact highly exotic. We propose an unprecedented scenario where mechanical dissipation is entirely determined by nonlinear damping. As a striking consequence, the quality factor Q strongly depends on the amplitude of the motion. This scenario is radically different from that of other resonators, whose dissipation is dominated by a linear damping term. We believe that the difference stems from the reduced dimensionality of carbon nanotubes and graphene. Mechanical dissipation poses an ubiquitous challenge to the performance of nanomechanical devices. Here we analyze the support-induced dissipation of high-stress nanomechanical resonators. We develop a model for this loss mechanism and test it on silicon nitride membranes with circular and square geometries. The measured Q-values of different harmonics present a non-monotonic behavior which is successfully explained. For azimuthal harmonics of the circular geometry we predict that destructive interference of the radiated waves leads to an exponential suppression of the clamping loss in the harmonic index. We propose a framework for inducing strong optomechanical effects in a suspended carbon nanotube based on deformation potential exciton-phonon coupling. The excitons are confined using an inhomogeneous axial electric field which generates optically active quantum dots with a level spacing in the milli-electronvolt range and a characteristic size in the 10-nanometer range. A transverse field induces a tunable parametric coupling between the quantum dot and the flexural modes of the nanotube mediated by electron-phonon interactions. We derive the corresponding excitonic deformation potentials and show that this interaction enables efficient optical ground-state cooling of the fundamental mode and could allow us to realise the strong and ultra-strong coupling regimes of the Jaynes-Cummings and Rabi models., Comment: 25 pages, 2 figures

Recent experimental progress in cavity optomechanics has allowed cooling of mesoscopic mechanical oscillators via dynamic backaction provided by the parametric coupling to either an optical or an electrical resonator. Here we analyze the occurrence of normal-mode splitting in backaction cooling at high input power. We find that a hybridization of the oscillator's motion with the fluctuations of the driving field occurs and leads to a splitting of the mechanical and optical fluctuation spectra. We analyze the quantum regime of the dynamical backaction cooling of a mechanical resonator assisted by a driven harmonic oscillator (cavity). Our treatment applies to both optomechanical and electromechanical realizations and includes the effect of thermal noise in the driven oscillator. In the perturbative case, we derive the corresponding motional master equation using the Nakajima-Zwanzig formalism and calculate the corresponding output spectrum for the optomechanical case. Then we analyze the strong optomechanical coupling regime in the limit of small cavity linewidth. Finally we consider the steady state covariance matrix of the two coupled oscillators for arbitrary input power and obtain an analytical expression for the final mechanical occupancy. This is used to optimize the drive's detuning and input power for an experimentally relevant range of parameters that includes the "ground state cooling" regime., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

State of the art nanomechanical resonators present quality factors Q ~ 10^3 - 10^5, which are much lower than those that can be naively extrapolated from the behavior of micromechanical resonators. We analyze the dissipation mechanism that arises in nanomechanical beam-structures due to the tunneling of mesoscopic phonons between the beam and its supports (known as clamping losses). We derive the environmental force spectral density that determines the quantum Brownian motion of a given resonance. Our treatment is valid for low frequencies and provides the leading contribution in the aspect ratio. This yields fundamental limits for the Q-values which are described by simple scaling laws and are relevant for state of the art experimental structures. In this context, for resonant frequencies in the 0.1-1GHz range, while this dissipation mechanism can limit flexural resonators it is found to be negligible for torsional ones. In the case of structureless 3D supports the corresponding environmental spectral densities are Ohmic for flexural resonators and super-Ohmic for torsional ones, while for 2D slab supports they yield 1/f noise. Furthermore analogous results are established for the case of suspended semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes. Finally, we provide a general expression for the spectral density that allows to extend our treatment to other geometries and illustrate its use by applying it to a microtoroid. A quantum theory of cooling of a mechanical oscillator by radiation pressure-induced dynamical back-action is developed, which is analogous to sideband cooling of trapped ions. We find that final occupancies well below unity can be attained when the mechanical oscillation frequency is larger than the cavity linewidth. We propose an all-optical scheme to perform a non-demolition measurement of a single hole spin localized in a quantum-dot molecule. The latter is embedded in a microcavity and driven by two lasers. This allows to induce Raman transitions which entangle the spin state with the polarization of the emitted photons. We find that the measurement can be completed with high fidelity on a timescale of 100 ps, shorter than the typical T2. Furthermore, we show that the scheme can be used to induce and observe spin oscillations without the need of time-dependent magnetic fields.

We show that it is possible to cool a nanomechanical resonator mode to its ground state. The proposed technique is based on resonant laser excitation of a phonon sideband of an embedded quantum dot. The strength of the sideband coupling is determined directly by the difference between the electron-phonon couplings of the initial and final states of the quantum dot optical transition. A quantum dot strongly coupled to a single high finesse optical microcavity mode constitutes a new fundamental system for quantum optics. Here, the effect of exciton-phonon interactions on reversible quantum-dot cavity coupling is analysed without making Born-Markov approximation. The analysis is based on techniques that have been used to study the ``spin boson'' Hamiltonian.
