2. Going Further: A Roadmap to the Works of the ACCLAIM Research Initiative. Working Paper No. 42

Abstract

"Going Further" presents a roadmap to the works of the ACCLAIM (Appalachian Collaborative Center for Learning, Assessment, and Instruction in Mathematics) Research Initiative, the research effort of one the Centers for Learning and Teaching (CLTs) created with a grant (2001-2005) from the National Science Foundation. The Center began with a broad mission to include practitioners, a doctoral program, and a research program. This report focuses on the most substantive "works" produced for the Center's research program (known as the "Research Initiative"). This report also offers an internal evaluation of the works produced (the present authors for the Center), but it relies rather than more heavily on descriptions of the works, and less on nuanced judgments than might an essay review. One section deals with specifically with the evaluation of individual works, as to be explained shortly, but one section engages a wider discussion around the critique of several key ideas that surface across the ACCLAIM opus. Both these presentations are best read as part of the roadmap mission; they give a somewhat deeper engagement with the scope of the works than the simple descriptions initially presented. The report synthesizes the results of ACCLAIM's empirical work, summarizing the findings of individual studies (14 quantitative studies and 20 qualitative studies; unduplicated accounting) but also characterizing the overall findings. Appended are: (1) Table of ACCLAIM works replaced by later versions; (2) ACCLAIM's Theoretical Framework; (3) Background Information; (4) Numerical Codes for ACCLAIM Works Listed in Table 2, Alphabetized by Year; (5) Evaluation Chart for High-Scoring Theoretical Works; and (6) Glossary of Key Concepts. 5. Identifying correlations driven by influential observations in large datasets.

Abstract

Although high-throughput data allow researchers to interrogate thousands of variables simultaneously, it can also introduce a significant number of spurious results. Here we demonstrate that correlation analysis of large datasets can yield numerous false positives due to the presence of outliers that canonical methods fail to identify. We present Correlations Under The InfluencE (CUTIE), an open-source jackknifing-based method to detect such cases with both parametric and non-parametric correlation measures, and which can also uniquely rescue correlations not originally deemed significant or with incorrect sign. Our approach can additionally be used to identify variables or samples that induce these false correlations in high proportion. A meta-analysis of various omics datasets using CUTIE reveals that this issue is pervasive across different domains, although microbiome data are particularly susceptible to it. Although the significance of a correlation eventually depends on the thresholds used, our approach provides an efficient way to automatically identify those that warrant closer examination in very large datasets. 7. Forget Me Not & Other Stories

Abstract

My thesis manuscript Forget Me Not & Other Stories is composed of several short stories and the first section of a novel. The first drafts of these stories were written during my first and second years in the program while my primary focus this semester has been the novel. I believe this thesis reflects my growth as both a writer and critical reader of fiction as a result of my time here. Much of the work included here began as assignments for a creative class, including an imitation of Marilyn Robinson's' Gilead written for Professor Doug Unger's Forms of Fiction. The first ideas for the ending novel began in Dr. Maile Chapman's course on crafting ambiguity in fiction. My work interrogates the intersections of my identity as a white, queer Cherokee citizen living in an imperialist state that continues to actively colonize sovereign indigenous nations and other disenfranchised communities of color. Over the last several semesters, my focus as a writer has shifted to explore the complex colonial hierarchies imposed on queerness and indigeneity using surreal and fantastical elements. In the opening story a white-passing Cherokee woman copes with her absent father's return from the dead, and the main character in the novel excerpt faces the psychological and emotional effects of feeling uprooted and displaced through the metaphor of jumping through space and time. My goal is for this creative work to engage with difficult truths, particularly dialogues that surround conflicting intersectional identities and internalized racism and queerphobia within marginalized communities. 12. First Year of Banding at a MAPS Station in Iron County, Wisconsin.

Abstract

The article focuses on a study which examined changes in songbird population and productivity at a Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) station adjacent to the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest in southern Mercer, Iron County, Wisconsin from June 5-August 2, 2012. A total of 126 individuals of 25 species breeding in the station were captured and banded. The species include Nashville and Chestnut-sided warblers, Canada warblers and American robins.
