3. Complexions in a modified Langmuir-McLean model of grain boundary segregation

Abstract

The Langmuir-McLean isotherm is often interpreted as providing an approximation to the most probable grain boundary segregation as a function of the bulk mole solute fraction $x_B$, even though $x_B$ is not an independant parameter in the free energy minimization on which it is based. In this paper it is shown that the most probable segregation for a specified $x_B$ differs from the standard Langmuir-McLean relation. Numerical solution of the derived equation suggests that two potentially stable interface compositions are associated with most bulk compositions. One solution represents a state with an excess of solute along the boundary relative to the bulk, while the other represents a deficit. The vacancy content ratio between the interface and the bulk plays a large role in determining the shape of the derived isotherm., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Analysis of data from an Affymetrix Latin Square spike-in experiment indicates that measured fluorescence intensities of features on an oligonucleotide microarray are related to spike-in RNA target concentrations via a hyperbolic response function, generally identified as a Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Furthermore the asymptotic signal at high spike-in concentrations is almost invariably lower for a mismatch feature than for its partner perfect match feature. We survey a number of theoretical adsorption models of hybridization at the microarray surface and find that in general they are unable to explain the differing saturation responses of perfect and mismatch features. On the other hand, we find that a simple and consistent explanation can be found in a model in which equilibrium hybridization followed by partial dissociation of duplexes during the post-hybridization washing phase., Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures, some rearrangement of sections and some additions. Abstract

The Environmental Effects Assessment Panel of the Montreal Protocol under the United Nations Environment Programme evaluates effects on the environment and human health that arise from changes in the stratospheric ozone layer and concomitant variations in ultraviolet (UV) radiation at the Earth’s surface. The current update is based on scientific advances that have accumulated since our last assessment (Photochem and Photobiol Sci 20(1):1–67, 2021). We also discuss how climate change affects stratospheric ozone depletion and ultraviolet radiation, and how stratospheric ozone depletion affects climate change. The resulting interlinking effects of stratospheric ozone depletion, UV radiation, and climate change are assessed in terms of air quality, carbon sinks, ecosystems, human health, and natural and synthetic materials. We further highlight potential impacts on the biosphere from extreme climate events that are occurring with increasing frequency as a consequence of climate change. These and other interactive effects are examined with respect to the benefits that the Montreal Protocol and its Amendments are providing to life on Earth by controlling the production of various substances that contribute to both stratospheric ozone depletion and climate change.

Abstract

Various statistical models have been proposed for detecting differential gene expression in data from microarray experiments. Given such detection, we are usually interested in describing the differential expression patterns. Due to the large number of genes that are typically analysed in microarray experiments, possibly more than ten thousand, the tasks of interpretation and communication of all the corresponding statistical models pose a considerable challenge, except perhaps in the simplest experiment involving only two groups. A further challenge is to find methods to summarize the resulting models. These challenges increase with experimental complexity.

Abstract

We study correlations between the solid-liquid interface (SLI) free energy and bulk material properties (melting temperature, latent heat, and liquid structure) through the determination of SLI free energies for bcc and hcp metals from molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Values obtained for the bcc metals in this study were compared to values predicted by the Turnbull, Laird, and Ewing relations on the basis of previously published MD simulation data. We found that of these three empirical relations, the Ewing relation better describes the MD simulation data. Moreover, whereas the original Ewing relation contains two constants for a particular crystal structure, we found that the first coefficient in the Ewing relation does not depend on crystal structure, taking a common value for all three phases, at least for the class of the systems described by embedded-atom method potentials (which are considered to provide a reasonable approximation for metals). Abstract

The solid-liquid interface (SLI) free energy was determined from molecular dynamics (MD) simulation for several body centered cubic (bcc) metals and B2 metallic compounds (space group: Pm3m; prototype: CsCl). In order to include a bcc metal with a low melting temperature in our study, a semi-empirical potential was developed for Na. Two additional synthetic "Na" potentials were also developed to explore the effect of liquid structure and latent heat on the SLI free energy. The obtained MD data were compared with the empirical Turnbull, Laird, and Ewing relations. All three relations are found to predict the general trend observed in the MD data for bcc metals obtained within the present study. However, only the Laird and Ewing relations are able to predict the trend obtained within the sequence of "Na" potentials. The Laird relation provides the best prediction for our MD data and other MD data for bcc metals taken from the literature. Overall, the Laird relation also agrees well with our B2 data but requires a proportionality constant that is substantially different from the bcc case. It also fails to explain a considerable difference between the SLI free energies of some B2 phases which have nearly the same melting temperature. In contrast, this difference is satisfactorily described by the Ewing relation. Moreover, the Ewing relation obtained from the bcc dataset also provides a reasonable description of the B2 data.
