Astrophysics - Abstract
The Milagro gamma-ray observatory employs a water Cherenkov detector to observe extensive air showers produced by high energy particles interacting in the Earth's atmosphere. Milagro has a wide field of view and high duty cycle, monitoring the northern sky almost continuously in the 100 GeV to 100 TeV energy range. Milagro is, thus, uniquely capable of searching for very high-energy emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) during the prompt emission phase. Detection of >100 GeV counterparts would place powerful constraints on GRB mechanisms. Twenty-five satellite-triggered GRBs occurred within the field of view of Milagro between January 2000 and December 2001. We have searched for counterparts to these GRBs and found no significant emission from any of the burst positions. Due to the absorption of high-energy gamma rays by the extragalactic background light, detections are only expected to be possible for redshifts less than ~0.5. Three of the GRBs studied have measured redshifts. GRB 010921 has a redshift low enough (0.45) to allow an upper limit on the fluence to place an observational constraint on potential GRB models., Comment: submitted to ApJ

Astrophysics - Abstract
The Milagro telescope monitors the northern sky for 100 GeV to 100 TeV transient emission through continuous very high energy wide-field observations. The large effective area and ~100 GeV energy threshold of Milagro allow it to detect very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray burst emission with much higher sensitivity than previous instruments and a fluence sensitivity at VHE energies comparable to that of dedicated gamma-ray burst satellites at keV to MeV energies. Even in the absence of a positive detection, VHE observations can place important constraints on gamma-ray burst (GRB) progenitor and emission models. We present limits on the VHE flux of 40 s -- 3 h duration transients nearby to earth, as well as sensitivity distributions which have been corrected for gamma-ray absorption by extragalactic background light and cosmological effects. The sensitivity distributions suggest that the typical intrinsic VHE fluence of GRBs is similar or weaker than the keV -- MeV emission, and we demonstrate how these sensitivity distributions may be used to place observational constraints on the absolute VHE luminosity of gamma-ray bursts for any GRB emission and progenitor model., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL, minor revisions to the text, retypeset in emulateapj style

- Abstract
To investigate the role of the Sry/hydroxymethylglutaryl box (Sox) transcription factors in the development of the pancreas, we determined the expression pattern of Sox factors in the developing mouse pancreas. By RT-PCR, we detected the presence of multiple Sox family members in both the developing pancreas and mature islets and then focused on two factors, Sox2 and Sox4. The expression field of Sox2, which plays a role in the maintenance of some stem cell populations, included the developing duodenum, but Sox2 was specifically excluded from the pancreatic buds. In contrast, Sox4 was detected broadly in the early pancreatic buds and eventually became restricted to the nuclei of all islet cells in the adult mouse. Mice homozygous for a null mutation of the sox4 gene showed normal pancreatic bud formation and endocrine cell differeniiation up to embryonic day 12.5. Beyond that date, cultured pancreatic explants lacking sox4 failed to form normal islets. Instead, a markedly reduced number of endocrine cells were found scattered through the explant. We show here that several Sox transcription factors are expressed in the developing pancreas and in the islet, and that one of these factors, Sox4, is required for the normal development of pancreatic islets.

617.7 - Abstract
1. Small lesions have been made in the cat lateral geniculate nucleus. The resulting degeneration has been traced in the neo-cortex using the Nauta stain. A projection, which is strictly ipsilateral to the lesion, is described to the visual areas I and II (as defined by TALBOT, 1942 and BILGE, SENEVIRATNE & WHITTERIDGE, 1963). A third projection was found to the lateral edge of the middle suprasylvian gyrus. More medial lesions which included the medial interlaminar nucleus of the lateral geniculate nucleus produced degeneration in Visual area III (HUBEL & WIESEL, 1965; WHITTERIDGE, 1966) in the bottom of the splenial sulcus and thirdly,on the middle suprasylvian gyrus. 2. Similar methods in the monkey have shown only one projection from the LGN; this is to the striate area. 3. Small lesions have been made in various cortical visual areas of the cat. A study of the Nauta degeneration has shown that these cortical areas are reciprocally connected. The densest projection is from the medial to the more lateral areas. Reciprocal connections exist with the other hemisphere, these are sparse except for the regions which represent the vertical meridian of the visual field. Some evidence has been found for a projection from the middle suprasylvian gyrus to the anterior sigmoid gyrus, 4. Photically evoked electrical responses mediated by the corpus callosum have been studied in the cat lateral gyrus after the optic tract had been cut on that side. Responses could only be obtained from a narrow strip corresponding to the vertical meridian of the visual field (Visual I /Visual II boundary). The strip spread laterally in the region of the area centralis and was traced for a short distance in the region corresponding to the vertical meridian of Visual III. Responses could only be elicited if the photic stimulus was close to the vertical meridian. Single units were observed, these were simple units (HUBEL & WIESEL, 1960). The responses on the Visuall /Visual II boundary could be abolished temporarily by cooling the corresponding point of the other hemisphere or the corpus callosum. 5. The discreetness of the connections observed with electrophysiological methods is contrasted with the diffuseness seen with the Nauta method. Similarities between the cat and monkey visual areas and between the cat supraylvian and the monkey temporal regions are discussed. 6. An attempt was made to differentiate behaviourally between the A or Al and the B laminae of the cat LGN by cutting one optic tract and testing monocularly. No difference was found in the absolute threshold to light or the ability to discriminate between patterns which lacked edges. These were the two most likely déficits suggested by previous electrphysiological studies. (SENEVIRATNE & WHITTERIDGE, 1962). 7. Some neurones were found to persist in all laminae of the cat lateral geniculate nucleus inspite of removal of all the neocortical visual projections.

930.1 - Abstract
The Hwicce, assessed at 7,000 hides (C.S.297), are probably one of the best documented representatives of the early Anglo-Saxon tribal groups which settled in England. They never had the political power wielded by the major kingdoms but were important enough to have their own bishop whose parochia preserved the tribe's territorial extent within the modern counties of Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. I have used material from the pagan Anglo-Saxon burials in the West Midlands, together with saucer and applied brooches and small-long brooches from other parts of England, for the detailed analyses in this study. The classification of archaeological objects is frequently by uncorroborated typologies which are based upon imprecisely specified criteria. I have used cluster analysis methods in this examination and have produced four typologies which I have then used as checks on the validity of extant ones. My results, based upon the constant consideration of many specified attributes, are substantiated by several analyses. The illustrations, mapping of distributions and lists of key diagnostic features make my typologies simpler to use than earlier ones. From the brooch typologies it is possible to see trading and possible cultural patterns within England and this had been used to show that the pagan Anglo-Saxon peoples of the West Midlands had the closest affinities with Middle Anglia. A brief examination of place-names shows support for the links indicated by the archaeological evidence although these are not supported by the historical sources. Where the documentary sources are vital, however, is in the delimitation of the territory used in this study, the kingdom of the Hwicce, which has been shown in this work to have had distinctive material possessions.

Introduction The aim of this study is to compare the clinical features, mortality and causes of death of systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients in four large multicentre registries. Methods Patients seen at least once in the Australian Scleroderma Cohort Study (ASCS) (n = 1714), the Canadian Scleroderma Research Group (CSRG) (n = 1628), the European League Against Rheumatism Scleroderma Trials and Research (EUSTAR) Network (n = 13,996) and the Systemic Sclerosis Cohort in Singapore (SCORE) (n = 500) before August 2016 were included. Clinical manifestations and survival in cohorts and disease subtypes were compared. Results Among 17,838 SSc patients, most were female (86.1%), Caucasian (84.6%) and had the limited cutaneous subtype (lcSSc) (65.0%). The anti-centromere autoantibody was the most prevalent (37.6%). More patients in SCORE had the diffuse subtype (dcSSc) (49.3%) and Scl-70 autoantibody (38.8%) (pConclusions This meta-cohort of SSc patients, the largest reported to date, provides insights into the impact of race and sex on disease manifestations and survival and confirms the early mortality in this disease.

Background Analysis of a large cohort of business travelers will help clinicians focus on frequent and serious illnesses. We aimed to describe travel-related health problems in business travelers. Methods GeoSentinel Surveillance Network consists of 64 travel and tropical medicine clinics in 29 countries; descriptive analysis was performed on ill business travelers, defined as persons traveling for work, evaluated after international travel 1 January 1997 through 31 December 2014. Results Among 12 203 business travelers seen 1997–2014 (14 045 eligible diagnoses), the majority (97%) were adults aged 20–64 years; most (74%) reported from Western Europe or North America; two-thirds were male. Most (86%) were outpatients. Fewer than half (45%) reported a pre-travel healthcare encounter. Frequent regions of exposure were sub-Saharan Africa (37%), Southeast Asia (15%) and South Central Asia (14%). The most frequent diagnoses were malaria (9%), acute unspecified diarrhea (8%), viral syndrome (6%), acute bacterial diarrhea (5%) and chronic diarrhea (4%). Species was reported for 973 (90%) of 1079 patients with malaria, predominantly Plasmodium falciparum acquired in sub-Saharan Africa. Of 584 (54%) with malaria chemoprophylaxis information, 92% took none or incomplete courses. Thirteen deaths were reported, over half of which were due to malaria; others succumbed to pneumonia, typhoid fever, rabies, melioidosis and pyogenic abscess. Conclusions Diarrheal illness was a major cause of morbidity. Malaria contributed substantial morbidity and mortality, particularly among business travelers to sub-Saharan Africa. Underuse or non-use of chemoprophylaxis contributed to malaria cases. Deaths in business travelers could be reduced by improving adherence to malaria chemoprophylaxis and targeted vaccination for vaccine-preventable diseases. Pre-travel advice is indicated for business travelers and is currently under-utilized and needs improvement.

No demographic characteristics identified who might benefit most from pretravel counseling., Among travelers, rabies cases are rare, but animal bites are relatively common. To determine which travelers are at highest risk for rabies, we studied 2,697 travelers receiving care for animal-related exposures and requiring rabies postexposure prophylaxis at GeoSentinel clinics during 1997–2012. No specific demographic characteristics differentiated these travelers from other travelers seeking medical care, making it challenging to identify travelers who might benefit from reinforced pretravel rabies prevention counseling. Median travel duration was short for these travelers: 15 days for those seeking care after completion of travel and 20 days for those seeking care during travel. This finding contradicts the view that preexposure rabies vaccine recommendations should be partly based on longer travel durations. Over half of exposures occurred in Thailand, Indonesia, Nepal, China, and India. International travelers to rabies-endemic regions, particularly Asia, should be informed about potential rabies exposure and benefits of pretravel vaccination, regardless of demographics or length of stay.

Environment Pollution - Abstract
The overall objective of the NASA Atmospheric Effects of Aviation Project (AEAP) is to develop scientific bases for assessing atmospheric impacts of the exhaust emissions by both current and future fleets of subsonic and supersonic aircraft. Among the six primary elements of the AEAP is Emissions Characterization. The objective of the Emission Characterization effort is to determine the exhaust emission constituents and concentrations at the engine exit plane. The specific objective of this engine test is to obtain a database of gaseous and particulate emissions as a function of fuel sulfur and engine operating conditions. The database of the particulate emission properties is to be used as a comparative baseline with subsequent flight measurement. The engine used in this test was a Pratt & Whitney F1OO-200E turbofan engine. Aviation fuel (Jet A) with a range of fuel sulfur was used. Low and high sulfur values are limited by commercially available fuels and by fuel specification limits of O.3% by weight. Test matrix was set by parametrically varying the combustor inlet temperature (T(sub 3) between idle and maximum power setting at simulated SLS and up to five other altitudes for each fuel. Four diagnostic systems, extractive and non-intrusive, were assembled for the gaseous and particulate emissions characterization measurements study. NASA extractive system includes smoke meter and analyzers for measurement of CO, CO2, NO, NOx, O2, total unburnt hydrocarbons (THC), and SO2. Particulate emissions were characterized by University of Missouri-Rolla Mobile Aerosol Sampling System. A chemical ionization mass spectrometer from the Air Force Research Laboratory at Hanscom AFB was used to measure SO2 and HNO3. Aerodyne Research. Inc. used infrared tunable diode laser absorption to measure SO2, SO3, NO, H2O and CO2.

Man/System Technology And Life Support - Abstract
Microbiological techniques are under study with a view to the identification of viable microorganisms in liquid cultures, improve the identification of stressed organisms, and determine the biocidal activity of iodine and other chemicals on isolates from recycled water. A quality-assurance program has been implemented to validate data employed in making decisions concerning engineering and human health and safety. Analytical laboratory refinements will strongly aid the development of environmental control and life-support systems.

Man/System Technology And Life Support - Abstract
NASA/MSFC is developing a physical/chemical treatment system to reclaim wastewater for reuse on Space Station Freedom (SSF). Integrated testing of hygiene and potable water subsystems assessed the capability to reclaim water to SSF specifications. The test was conducted from May through July 1990 with a total of 47 days of system test operation. Water samples were analyzed using standard cultural methods employing membrane filtration and spread plate techniques and epifluorescence microscopy. Fatty acid methyl ester and biochemical profiles were used for microbial identification. Analysis of waste and product water produced by the subsystems demonstrated the effective reduction of viable microbial populations greater than 8.0E + 06 colony forming units (CFU) per 100 mL to an average of 5 CFU/100 mL prior to distribution into storage tanks.
