Through sustainable development goals 3 and 8 and other policies, countries have committed to protect and promote workers' health by reducing the work-related burden of disease. To monitor progress on these commitments, indicators that capture the work-related burden of disease should be available for monitoring workers' health and sustainable development. The World Health Organization and the International Labour Organization estimate that only 363 283 (19%) of 1 879 890 work-related deaths globally in 2016 were due to injuries, whereas 1 516 607 (81%) deaths were due to diseases. Most monitoring systems focusing on workers' health or sustainable development, such as the global indicator framework for the sustainable development goals, include an indicator on the burden of occupational injuries. Few such systems, however, have an indicator on the burden of work-related diseases. To address this gap, we present a new global indicator: mortality rate from diseases attributable to selected occupational risk factors, by disease, risk factor, sex and age group. We outline the policy rationale of the indicator, describe its data sources and methods of calculation, and report and analyse the official indicator for 183 countries. We also provide examples of the use of the indicator in national workers' health monitoring systems and highlight the indicator's strengths and limitations. We conclude that integrating the new indicator into monitoring systems will provide more comprehensive and accurate surveillance of workers' health, and allow harmonization across global, regional and national monitoring systems. Inequalities in workers' health can be analysed and the evidence base can be improved towards more effective policy and systems on workers' health. Mais pour evaluer leurs progres en la matiere, il convient de mettre en place des indicateurs estimant l'impact des maladies liees au travail afin de placer le developpement durable et la sante des travailleurs sous surveillance. D'apres l'Organisation mondiale de la Sante et l'Organisation internationale du Travail, seulement 363 283 (19%) des 1 879 890 deces lies au travail dans le monde en 2016 decoulaient de blessures, tandis que 1 516 607 (81%) d'entre eux etaient causes par des maladies. La plupart des systemes de surveillance qui s'interessent a la sante des travailleurs ou au developpement durable, comme le cadre mondial d'indicateurs pour les objectifs de developpement durable, comportent un indicateur relatif a l'impact des accidents de travail. Cependant, rares sont ceux qui possedent un indicateur concernant l'impact des maladies professionnelles. Pour combler cette lacune, nous devoilons un nouvel indicateur mondial: le taux de mortalite du aux maladies attribuables a certains facteurs de risque professionnels classe par maladie, facteur de risque, sexe et categorie d'age. Nous exposons le motif politique de l'indicateur, decrivons l'origine des donnees et les methodes de calcul, et communiquons et analysons l'indicateur officiel pour 183 pays. Nous fournissons egalement des exemples de la facon dont l'indicateur peut etre utilise dans des systemes nationaux de surveillance de la sante des travailleurs et soulignons ses forces et faiblesses. Nous concluons en affirmant que l'integration de ce nouvel indicateur dans les systemes de surveillance offrira un suivi plus complet et precis de la sante des travailleurs et ouvrira la voie a une harmonisation des systemes mondiaux, nationaux et regionaux. Il est possible d'analyser les inegalites en matiere de sante des travailleurs et d'en ameliorer les bases factuelles afin d'etablir des politiques et systemes plus efficaces dans ce domaine. Para supervisar los avances en el cumplimiento de estos compromisos, deberia disponerse de indicadores que reflejen la carga de morbilidad relacionada con el trabajo, a fin de controlar la salud de los trabajadores y el desarrollo sostenible. La Organizacion Mundial de la Salud y la Organizacion Internacional del Trabajo estiman que solo 363 283 (19%) de las 1 879 890 muertes relacionadas con el trabajo a nivel mundial en 2016 se debieron a lesiones, mientras que 1 516 607 (81%) muertes se debieron a enfermedades. La mayoria de los sistemas de vigilancia centrados en la salud de los trabajadores o el desarrollo sostenible, como el marco de indicadores mundiales para los objetivos de desarrollo sostenible, incluyen un indicador sobre la carga de las lesiones laborales. No obstante, pocos de estos sistemas cuentan con un indicador sobre la carga de las enfermedades relacionadas con el trabajo. Tambien proporcionamos ejemplos del uso del indicador en los sistemas nacionales de vigilancia de la salud de los trabajadores y destacamos las ventajas y las limitaciones del indicador. Concluimos que la integracion del nuevo indicador en los sistemas de vigilancia proporcionara una vigilancia mas exhaustiva y precisa de la salud de los trabajadores, y permitira la armonizacion entre los sistemas de vigilancia mundiales, regionales y nacionales. The kereru (New Zealand pigeon) is a threatened endemic species. Predation of eggs, chicks, and adults at nests by mammalian predators is considered to be a major potential threat. The impact of mammalian predators on kereru populations was studied on three remnant native bush areas on Banks Peninsula, New Zealand, from February 2004 to March 2005. In this study, 15 kereru were fitted with radio-transmitters and intensely monitored for survival. Three radio-tagged kereru were lost at the beginning of this study and their transmitters were redeployed, so a total of 18 radio-tagged kereru were monitored for predator-induced mortality. Five adult kereru died, 3 as a result of predation. A cat was recorded on video preying on one adult. It is hypothesised that cats were responsible for preying on other kereru during this study. Rat and possum predation limited nesting success; however, this could have been offset by replacement nesting after nest failures. Cats preyed on chicks and adult kereru, which impacted the breeding viability of the adult population. Kereru may be able to withstand some nest predation pressure if the pair is able to re-nest in the same season. However, the ability of kereru to re-nest is reliant on them having an adequate food source, so this may not be possible in poor seasons. These assertions require population modelling to determine their relative importance. Nesting success would benefit from rat and possum control during good breeding seasons. Adult survival would benefit from the control of predators such as cats and stoats. However, as kereru have integrated into urban habitat, managers must consult with the community before conducting predator control.

"Badass Feminist Politics: Exploring Radical Edges of Feminist Theory, Communication, and Activism" is a collection of essays edited by Sarah Jane Blithe and Janelle C. Bauer that focuses on intersectional identities within the feminist movement. The essays cover topics such as Black Lives Matter, narrating the material body, living feminist politics in mediated environments, and new feminist theorizing. The book includes a diverse range of voices, including those of Black, Indigenous, and Latinx women, and aims to disrupt and complicate mainstream White feminism. While the text has value for those interested in understanding feminism beyond its limited focus, the author challenges the editors to go beyond simply "passing the mic" and actively decenter mainstream White feminism. This paper considers the role of the public library in ameliorating relations between communities, and the appropriateness of a multicultural or assimilationist approach via which to deliver socially inclusive services. Qualitative findings from two inductive studies, each of which focused on different aspects of the capacity of public library staff to deliver culturally inclusive services, are analysed in relation to concepts such as social capital, cultural and ethnic diversity, institutional racism and cultural awareness. The paper focuses on staffing issues and on the provision of the "multicultural text". It is concluded that recruitment strategies are slow to address the homogeneity of the current library workforce, and that a revised approach to recruitment and subsequent training should be made. Furthermore, it is suggested that a community-wide exposure to materials about other ethnic cultures can contribute to the reduction of existing social fragmentation. (Contains 1 note.)

This article presents two recent studies, an AHRC-funded exploration of the role of empathy in community librarianship (Study 1) and an investigation of the role of empathy in service to minority ethnic users (Study 2). Qualitative elements of each methodology are presented, namely a series of focus groups with frontline staff, interviews with senior managers and a research workshop (Study 1), and a case study investigation of a public library in the heart of a Chinese community (Study 2). Synthesizing the data of both studies, an analysis is conducted of the relationship between the cultural identities of library staff and their ability to empathize with the public. It is concluded that empathy plays a role in facilitating effective communication between staff and users, but that a distinction should be made between intuitive and cognitive empathy, in considering the potential of staff training to develop appropriate levels of emotional response to members of all communities. This paper discusses the effects of operational convergence, and the subsequent growth of the hybrid library model, upon the professional self-identity of academic library staff. The role of professionalism as a concept and motivational driver within contemporary academic librarianship is examined. Main themes of investigation include the extent of work assimilation between the traditional library and computing disciplines and between professional/para-professional staff groupings. Following a review of the literature, case study research involving Learning and Information Services (LIS) departments at four British universities was undertaken, including interview and focus group work with LIS staff from across the organizational structure. Predominant challenges to professional identity include employer (rather than professional) allegiance, the growing status of the para-professional and the growth of a generic skills base as recognized by para-professional sectors such as business, finance and media. In a project funded by the AHRB, researchers at the University of Sheffield used a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods to examine the perceived contemporary relevance of archives, libraries and museums. The research sought to discern how far the British people value access to these established repositories of public knowledge (RPKs) in what some have called the "information age". A telephone survey was used to establish how Britons perceive, value and use, archives, libraries and museums as sources of public knowledge when seeking information on, and trying to understand, contemporary social concerns. In addition, through a series of focus groups it investigated the perceptions and use of other possible sources of information and understanding, and asked about the perceived trustworthiness and authenticity of these different sources. The data have revealed a number of overlapping themes that help illuminate the role and value of RPKs as understood by a sample of the public, and by the professionals engaged in their day-to-day operations. They also demonstrate how factors such as access and speed of delivery, the depth of complexity of the issues, and the volume of information available can affect the use of libraries, archives and museums. The issue of trust is shown to play a significant part in the public's information-seeking behaviour, although the data reveal a discrepancy between the information sources that are the most used and those highly trusted. Public libraries are the most trusted sources, and tabloid papers the least. The extent to which the public feel "empowered" or "apathetic" towards the issues of the day is discussed together with the implications of this for RPKs. The research also shows that lifestyle and life stages are significant factors when assessing the value of RPKs, and examining patterns of use. On the basis of the evidence the authors argue that museums, libraries and archives are still regarded as relevant positories of public knowledge. Further they suggest that they are some of only a relatively small number of true information organizations. RPKs are not necessarily relevant to all people, all of the time, but the data strongly suggest that most consider archives, libraries and museums to be important institutions even if they do not use them on a regular basis. That is to say, people believe that it is essential for society to maintain and sustain the established repositories of public knowledge. (Contains 3 figures.)
