8. The Diagram Disconnect: An Examination of Note-Taking Behaviors In CollegeStudents

Abstract

Note-taking in college courses is prevalent yet often ineffective. One potential reason is a disconnect between the infor-mation in lectures and that recorded in notes. Whereas science-based lectures frequently include diagrams, students notesoften fail to include them. This disconnect likely inhibits learning and may be exacerbated by digital note-taking. We in-vestigated students note-taking during two mini neuroscience lectures and its relation to recall. Students were assigned todiagram presence (diagram embedded in notes for first or second lecture) and note-taking method (typed or handwritten)conditions. Students recalled more in the diagram first condition. There was no recall difference based on note-takingmethod. Including diagrams in notes for the first lecture likely primed participants to attend to diagrams in the subsequentlecture, helping them realize the importance of the diagram. The lack of a note-taking method effect is inconsistent withpast research, but may reflect increasing use of digital note-taking.

Abstract

Humorous and eudaimonic entertainment are often treated as theoretically distinct media experiences. Prior research has examined unique outcomes of meaningful entertainment, including making sense of difficulties (MSOD), connectedness, and helping intentions. The present study (N  = 275) experimentally manipulated the presence of humor in a film about cancer to examine how humor relates to these outcomes. Results show that, through the mechanisms of character identification and cancer anxiety, humor experiences positively predict MSOD and feelings of connectedness. This study also presents preliminary findings on a new measure of character coping humor that may be more suitable for use in poignant or somber message contexts. Abstract

We investigate the local stability of strongly magnetized relativistic tori orbiting Kerr black holes, for the case of a purely toroidal magnetic field topology. Our approach encompasses both solving the full dispersion relation numerically and solving a simplified analytic treatment. Both approaches indicate that such tori are subject to an unstable non-axisymmetric magnetorotational mode, regardless of such background properties as the gas-to-magnetic pressure ratio and specific angular momentum distribution. 22. Three-Dimensional Moving-Mesh Simulations of Galactic Center Cloud G2

Abstract

Using three-dimensional, moving-mesh simulations, we investigate the future evolution of the recently discovered gas cloud G2 traveling through the galactic center. We consider the case of a spherical cloud initially in pressure equilibrium with the background. Our suite of simulations explores the following parameters: the equation of state, radial profiles of the background gas, and start times for the evolution. Our primary focus is on how the fate of this cloud will affect the future activity of Sgr A*. From our simulations we expect an average feeding rate in the range of $5-19 \times 10^{-8}$ solar masses per year beginning in 2013 and lasting for at least 7 years (our simulations stop in year 2020). The accretion varies by less than a factor of three on timescales <1 month, and shows no more than a factor of 10 difference between the maximum and minimum. These rates are comparable to the current estimated accretion rate in the immediate vicinity of Sgr A*, although they represent only a small (<5%) increase over the current expected feeding rate at the effective inner boundary of our simulations. Therefore, the break up of cloud G2 may have only a minimal effect on the brightness and variability of Sgr A* over the next decade. This is because current models of the galactic center predict that most of the gas will be caught up in outflows. However, if the accreted G2 material can remain cold, it may not mix well with the hot, diffuse background gas, and instead accrete efficiently onto Sgr A*. Further observations of G2 will give us an unprecedented opportunity to test this idea. The break up of the cloud itself may also be observable. By tracking the amount of cloud energy that is dissipated during our simulations, we are able to get a rough estimate of the luminosity associated with its tidal disruption; we find values of a few $10^{36}$ erg/s., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, final accepted version

Abstract

It is now well established that changes in the X-ray spectral state of black hole low-mass X-ray binaries are correlated with changes in the radio properties of those systems. Assuming radio power is a proxy for jet power, we can say that the jet is continuously present in the hard state and undetectable (and therefore weaker) in the soft state. Since the different accretion states are also generally assumed to be associated with different disc geometries -- the hard state with a hot, thick flow, and the soft state with a cold, thin disc -- we investigate the possibility that these two phenomena are linked; i.e., that the difference in disc geometry is the cause of the difference in observed jet power. We do this by comparing various measures of jet power in numerical simulations of accretion discs of differing temperatures and thicknesses. We perform these simulations using the general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic code Cosmos++ and a newly added cooling function, which allows us to regulate the disc scale height H/r at different radii. We find no apparent correlation between the disc scale height and jet power whenever we normalize the latter by the mass accretion history of each simulation. We attribute this result to the role that the "corona" plays in confining and accelerating the jet (our corona may also be considered a failed MHD "wind"). The properties of the corona do not vary significantly from one simulation to another, even though the scale heights of the discs vary by up to a factor of four. If this holds true in nature, then it suggests that the correlation between spectral state and jet power must be attributable to some other property, possibly the topology of the magnetic field. Alternatively, it could be that the corona disappears altogether in the soft state, which would be consistent with observations, but has so far not been seen in simulations., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

A growing body of research reveals that entertainment narratives are persuasive across a variety of topics. Models of narrative persuasion highlight key mechanisms, but one limitation of this theorizing is that it has not directly considered the full range of entertainment narratives that exist. Viewers select media content to fulfill various needs—hedonic needs for pleasure and enjoyment or more eudaimonic needs gratified by appreciation and mixed affective responses. Narrative persuasion theorizing would benefit from explicitly considering eudaimonic entertainment narratives and how they may uniquely lead to persuasion. Doing so will expand on existing narrative persuasion mechanisms and identify contingencies regarding when and for whom distinct types of entertainment narratives may persuade. This article builds on the entertainment overcoming resistance model by advancing a set of testable propositions regarding narrative persuasion by meaningful entertainment and offering an agenda for future research in this area. Abstract

This article explores the issue of child pornography and exploitation, arguing that current federal laws are not effectively combating the problem. It discusses the role of the First Amendment in relation to child pornography, noting that while child pornography itself is not protected, artistic expressions such as drawings are. The article suggests that Congress should expand and enforce existing laws more aggressively to eliminate access to all child pornographic materials and close the distribution network. It also discusses Supreme Court cases that have shaped child pornography laws and highlights the ongoing challenges in defining and regulating child pornography in the digital age. Abstract

Neocortical layer 1 (L1) is a site of convergence between pyramidal-neuron dendrites and feedback axons where local inhibitory signaling can profoundly shape cortical processing. Evolutionary expansion of human neocortex is marked by distinctive pyramidal neurons with extensive L1 branching, but whether L1 interneurons are similarly diverse is underexplored. Using Patch-seq recordings from human neurosurgical tissue, we identified four transcriptomic subclasses with mouse L1 homologs, along with distinct subtypes and types unmatched in mouse L1. Subclass and subtype comparisons showed stronger transcriptomic differences in human L1 and were correlated with strong morphoelectric variability along dimensions distinct from mouse L1 variability. Accompanied by greater layer thickness and other cytoarchitecture changes, these findings suggest that L1 has diverged in evolution, reflecting the demands of regulating the expanded human neocortical circuit.
